You can leave a group chat on a Samsung phone when it is an eligible RCS conversation in Google Messages and the Leave group control is available. In Google Messages, open the group, tap More (three dots) > Group details, then tap Leave group. If that option is missing, the chat may be SMS/MMS, or the feature may not be available in your app version. First identify your messaging app and group type
Galaxy phones may use Samsung Messages or Google Messages. The steps differ, and changing apps alone does not make every group chat leaveable. The key distinction is whether the conversation is an RCS group or an SMS/MMS group.

- Google Messages with an RCS group: The group may offer a Leave group action. RCS availability for the conversation matters, and the control may not appear on every device or software version.
- SMS/MMS group: Google’s group-management guidance says you cannot remove participants through its group controls. Samsung likewise says you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else in Samsung Messages.
Google explains that a contact without the RCS indicator can result in an MMS conversation, so check the actual group rather than assuming its type from your phone or app. Google Messages Help: RCS chats

- Open Google Messages and tap the group conversation.
- Tap the three-dot More menu, then Group details.
- If Leave group appears, tap it and follow any confirmation prompt.
- If the option is absent, do not assume a different menu will remove you. Check whether the conversation is RCS and whether the app and software version support the control.
Google’s Android feature information says RCS users can leave group chats, while Samsung Members moderator guidance gives the menu path above. If there is no Leave group option
Mute or snooze the conversation
If you mainly want the alerts to stop, mute the thread in Samsung Messages or snooze the conversation in Google Messages. These controls suppress notifications; they do not change group membership. Google’s instructions cover snoozing conversations. Google Messages Help: RCS chats
Delete the conversation from your phone
Deleting clears the thread from your local message list. It does not send a request to leave the group, and it is not the same as removing your number from the conversation. Samsung lists muting and deleting as the available alternatives when someone else created the group. Samsung Support

Ask the group creator or another participant
If your messaging service supports participant removal, ask the creator or another participant to remove you. Whether they can do so depends on the group protocol and app; SMS/MMS group controls do not offer Google’s participant-removal feature.

What Samsung Messages’ U.S. transition means
Samsung’s U.S. support notice says Samsung Messages is discontinued for Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher and that sending stops after July 6, 2026, except for emergency calls and contacts. The same notice says Android 11 or lower is not affected by that end-of-service notice and recommends Google Messages for Android 12 or higher. Using Google Messages may expose the RCS leave control only if the conversation itself is an eligible RCS group. Samsung says all participants need RCS enabled for RCS chat, and a non-RCS contact can lead to an MMS group. Switching apps therefore is not a universal way to leave a group.
