For most computers without a built-in optical drive, the practical choice is an external USB CD/DVD writer that explicitly supports writing CD-R or CD-RW discs. Match the drive’s operating-system and connector requirements to your computer, and check whether any bundled burning software works with your OS. Two documented options are Verbatim’s External Slimline CD/DVD Writer and ASUS’s SDRW-08D2S-U; neither has independent comparative test results here that would justify calling it the fastest or most reliable.
What to look for in a CD burner
Start with the discs you intend to create. A drive that reads CDs does not necessarily write them: verify that its specifications explicitly list CD-R and/or CD-RW writing. If you also want to create DVDs, confirm DVD writing separately. The Verbatim 43886, for example, lists CD-R/RW writing and DVD-format support; it is not a Blu-ray writer. Verbatim’s product specifications also list playback for multiple CD formats.

ASUS also lists the ZenDrive U9M with Type-A and Type-C cable compatibility, CD-R/RW writing up to 24X, and Windows 11/10/8/8.1 and Mac OS X 10.6 or later support. Check the exact regional product listing before comparing it with the SDRW-08D2S-U. ASUS’s external DVD drive listings provide model specifications.

Which one fits your setup?
Choose Verbatim 43886 if you need flexible USB connections
Its included USB-C-to-USB-A cable and adapter cover more connection scenarios than a drive with only a USB-A interface. It also lists DVD writing in addition to CD-R/RW writing. One important distinction: the drive listing includes Mac host requirements, but its bundled Nero software is for Windows only. Verbatim’s 43886 specifications describe both the drive and software limitation.
Choose ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U if USB-A suits your computer
ASUS lists CD-R and CD-RW writing up to 24X and support for specified Windows and Mac OS X versions. If you want USB-C cable compatibility as well, compare the ZenDrive U9M’s listed connection options and confirm the precise SKU and included cables with the seller. ASUS’s model listings are the place to verify specifications.

Check the software before buying for a Mac
A Mac-compatible drive does not guarantee that its included burning application runs on macOS. Verbatim states that Nero Burn & Archive is suitable only for Windows OS, even though the 43886 drive page lists Intel Mac OS X 10.6 or later as a host requirement. Mac buyers should confirm what burning workflow is available for their specific macOS version or identify a compatible application before relying on bundled software. Verbatim’s specification page states the software restriction.

Both manufacturers list maximum CD writing speeds up to 24X for the cited models. These are specification ceilings, not proof from a side-by-side test that one drive finishes sooner in typical use or produces more reliable discs. The product pages cited here do not provide comparable independent speed, reliability, or burn-quality test results.

- Identify your computer’s OS and available ports. Check the current regional listing for the exact model’s compatibility and connection requirements.
- Match the drive to your media. Confirm CD-R or CD-RW writing, and DVD writing only if you need it.
- Check the software separately. If using a bundled application matters, verify its OS support; drive compatibility alone is not enough.
