Best Catalysts for Turning Glycerol into Hydrogen and Value-Added Chemicals

There is no single best glycerol catalyst. The right formulation depends on whether you want hydrogen, acrolein, lactic acid, 1,2-propanediol or 1,3-propanediol. Hydrogen production favors catalysts that split glycerol C–C bonds, activate water and support the water-gas-shift reaction. Chemical production instead rewards selectivity to one named product. Nickel is the low-cost steam-reforming benchmark; supported noble metals often offer better resistance to coke in aqueous-phase reforming; and acid, redox or bifunctional catalysts are required for the different value-added routes.

What “best catalyst” means for glycerol

Glycerol is a flexible feedstock, not a single-product molecule. The same three-carbon structure can be reformed to hydrogen, dehydrated to acrolein, oxidized to lactic acid, or hydrogenolyzed to propanediols. Each route needs a different balance of active sites. A catalyst that gives nearly complete glycerol conversion can still be a poor choice if it produces methane, coke or a broad mixture instead of the product you need.

  • For hydrogen: prioritize C–C bond cleavage, water activation and water-gas-shift activity, while limiting methanation, Fischer–Tropsch-type reactions, coke and metal sintering.
  • For acrolein: use acidic sites that favor dehydration and suppress overreaction.
  • For lactic acid: use a redox/basic environment that promotes oxidation and the required rearrangements.
  • For 1,2-propanediol or 1,3-propanediol: combine hydrogenation with controlled C–O bond cleavage on a tuned metal–acid or metal–base system.

Performance must be judged under matched conditions. Temperature, pressure, water:glycerol ratio, catalyst loading, space velocity, reactor type and feed impurities can change the ranking completely. A headline conversion from one paper cannot be compared directly with a hydrogen rate from another unless those variables are aligned.

Best catalysts for hydrogen from glycerol

Steam reforming: nickel remains the practical benchmark

Steam reforming uses high-temperature steam to convert glycerol into a hydrogen-rich product gas. Nickel is the conventional low-cost benchmark because it is active for C–C cleavage and costs far less than platinum-group metals. Its weakness is durability: carbon deposition and sintering reduce the number of accessible active sites, and nickel can also promote unwanted methanation.

Among the supports compared in a reviewed study—Al2O3, ZrO2 and SiO2—Ni/SiO2 was identified as the most stable. One reported test at 650 °C, with 15 wt% nickel and a water:glycerol ratio of 15, produced 4.82 mol H2 per mol glycerol. That figure belongs to the cited study conditions and should not be treated as a universal yield for every Ni/SiO2 catalyst.

Support selection changes how nickel particles disperse, how strongly they interact with the surface and how readily carbon accumulates. Silica can provide a comparatively stable platform in the reviewed comparison, while alumina and zirconia may offer different acidity, basicity and metal-support interactions. The support is therefore part of the catalyst, not an inert diluent.

Nickel alloys for lower coke and methanation

Adding a second metal is a common way to retain nickel’s C–C cleavage activity while reducing its failure modes. The reviewed work reports that Ni–Cu and Ni–Co alloys can reduce coke formation, methanation and sintering. Copper can dilute ensembles that favor methane and alter the electronic properties of nickel; cobalt can modify reducibility and carbon chemistry. The exact benefit depends on composition, dispersion and operating conditions, so “Ni–Cu” or “Ni–Co” is not a complete formulation by itself.

A reported Ni/Al2O3 catalyst increased its hydrogen rate from 180 to 353 mmol H2 gcat−1 min−1 after copper was added. Both numbers come from the same study’s conditions; they are useful for showing the direction and scale of the reported improvement, not for ranking that formulation against catalysts tested in different reactors.

When noble metals justify their cost

Platinum, rhodium and related metals are expensive, but they can provide higher intrinsic activity, cleaner product distributions or stronger resistance to carbon than many base-metal systems. They are especially relevant when the process operates in water-rich conditions or when a long, uninterrupted campaign is more valuable than the lowest initial catalyst price.

In aqueous-phase reforming, a supported platinum catalyst on cobalt aluminate (Pt/CoAl2O4) maintained more than 95% glycerol conversion for 100 hours in the reviewed example. A monometallic comparator declined from 90% conversion to below 60% over its test. The result illustrates why time-on-stream stability must be reported alongside initial conversion.

A separate comparison of alumina-supported catalysts found that 5%Pt–1%Rh/Al2O3 reached 85,580 mmol H2 gcat−1 h−1 with 89% selectivity, whereas 5% Pt/Al2O3 reached 42,625 mmol H2 gcat−1 h−1 and 69.9% selectivity under that study’s conditions. The bimetallic result does not mean rhodium is always worth its price; it means that a second metal can change both rate and selectivity enough to justify a full economic comparison.

Hydrogen-catalyst comparison

Route or formulation What the evidence shows Main advantage Main caution
Ni/SiO2 steam reforming Most stable among Ni/Al2O3, Ni/ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2 in the reviewed comparison; 4.82 mol H2 per mol glycerol was reported at 650 °C, 15 wt% Ni and water:glycerol 15. Low-cost nickel with comparatively strong stability in that comparison. High-temperature operation; coke and sintering remain risks.
Ni–Cu or Ni–Co alloy Reported to reduce coke, methanation and sintering while retaining nickel activity. Potentially better durability and hydrogen selectivity than unmodified nickel. Performance depends on alloy ratio, dispersion and support; no universal composition was established.
Pt/CoAl2O4 aqueous-phase reforming More than 95% glycerol conversion was maintained for 100 h in the reviewed example. Strong time-on-stream stability in water-rich operation. Platinum cost and the need to control liquid-phase transport and pressure.
5%Pt–1%Rh/Al2O3 85,580 mmol H2 gcat−1 h−1, 89% selectivity in one study. Higher reported rate and selectivity than the paired 5% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Rhodium adds substantial raw-material cost; values are study-specific.

Aqueous-phase reforming: the lower-temperature option

Aqueous-phase reforming (APR) operates in subcritical water at approximately 100–250 °C. Because glycerol can be processed as a wet stream, APR can avoid the energy-intensive drying step required before many gas-phase processes. A cited technoeconomic estimate placed glycerol APR at $0.055 per kilogram, compared with $0.110 per kilogram for steam or autothermal reforming; the figures are estimates cited by a 2024 review, not universal plant costs.

APR changes the catalyst priorities. The liquid phase improves heat management and accepts dilute or wet feeds, but it also makes catalyst accessibility, pressure control and product separation important. Noble metals generally show better resistance to coke than nickel, manganese or copper in the reviewed comparisons. A useful APR catalyst should cleave C–C bonds while avoiding excessive C–O cleavage, because excessive C–O chemistry can increase methane and other undesired products instead of directing intermediates toward hydrogen and water-gas shift.

APR is not automatically superior to steam reforming. Its lower temperature can reduce thermal demand, but high-pressure liquid operation and noble-metal loading may dominate capital and operating costs. Choose it when wet-feed tolerance and lower-temperature processing are valuable, then verify catalyst life with a continuous test rather than relying on a short batch experiment.

Catalysts for glycerol-to-acrolein

Acrolein is made by dehydrating glycerol, so the catalyst must provide appropriately strong and accessible acid sites. Acid catalysts can be used in gas or liquid configurations, with the support controlling acidity, pore structure and residence time. The objective is not simply maximum glycerol conversion: over-dehydration, cracking, polymerization and coke can consume acrolein or block the active surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For screening, measure acrolein selectivity and carbon balance at the same time as conversion. A catalyst that converts 95% of glycerol but sends much of the carbon to heavy products may be less useful than one that converts less glycerol while producing a clean acrolein stream. Time-on-stream data are essential because acid-catalyzed dehydration can accelerate coke deposition.

  • Use an acid strength and density appropriate to dehydration rather than the strongest possible acidity.
  • Check pore architecture and diffusion, especially when coke precursors can form inside the support.
  • Report acrolein selectivity, by-products, carbon balance and deactivation together.
  • Include regeneration or replacement procedures before claiming process readiness.

Catalysts for glycerol-to-lactic acid

Lactic acid production follows an oxidation route rather than a simple dehydration. Catalysts therefore need redox functionality, basic sites or both, depending on the selected pathway and oxidant. The catalyst must promote conversion of glycerol-derived intermediates toward lactate while limiting over-oxidation, fragmentation and unwanted acids.

Support chemistry matters strongly here. Basicity can help form and transform oxygenated intermediates, while redox capacity controls how the catalyst handles hydrogen and oxygen. Because the available data does not establish one universally superior metal or support for lactic acid, the practical choice is a formulation screen organized around lactic-acid selectivity, carbon balance and catalyst recyclability.

Batch studies are common for value-added chemicals, but they can hide gradual leaching or product inhibition. A useful development sequence is to run repeated batch cycles, analyze the liquid for dissolved metal, then move the best candidate to a continuous reactor with a defined residence time and steady feed.

Catalysts for 1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol

Selective hydrogenolysis converts glycerol into propanediols by combining hydrogenation with controlled C–O bond cleavage. The two products require different regioselectivity, so a catalyst that favors 1,2-propanediol is not automatically suitable for 1,3-propanediol.

These reactions generally use a metal function for hydrogen activation and hydrogenation plus acid or base sites that direct which C–O bond is broken. Too much acidity can promote dehydration and cracking; too much hydrogenolysis activity can lower selectivity by over-converting the desired diol. The best candidate is therefore a tuned bifunctional system, not simply the metal with the highest glycerol conversion.

  • For 1,2-propanediol: evaluate catalysts that favor the corresponding secondary C–O cleavage while suppressing further hydrogenolysis.
  • For 1,3-propanediol: prioritize site arrangements that preserve the terminal hydroxyl pattern and avoid pathways leading to 1,2-propanediol or propanol.
  • For either product: report hydrogen pressure, solvent or water content, temperature, glycerol conversion, diol selectivity and carbon balance together.

The reviewed evidence does not identify a single catalyst that wins both propanediol targets under all conditions. Product specification must come first, followed by catalyst selection.

  1. Conversion: the fraction of glycerol consumed and the analytical method used.
  2. Product performance: hydrogen yield or rate for reforming; target-product selectivity and yield for chemical synthesis.
  3. Time on stream: initial activity and activity after a defined period, such as the 100-hour stability example reported for Pt/CoAl2O4.
  4. Operating conditions: temperature, pressure, water:glycerol ratio, feed concentration, space velocity, hydrogen co-feed and reactor type.
  5. Catalyst description: active-metal loading, particle size where available, support, promoter, pretreatment and regeneration history.
  6. Deactivation evidence: carbon deposits, sintering, agglomeration, leaching and changes in surface area or dispersion.
  7. Economics: noble-metal loading, support cost, lifetime, regeneration frequency and waste handling—not just purchase price per kilogram.

Never compare a hydrogen rate in mmol gcat−1 min−1 with a yield in mol per mol glycerol as though they were interchangeable. They answer different questions. Likewise, a batch conversion after several hours cannot be ranked directly against a continuous-flow conversion at steady state.

Why glycerol catalysts deactivate

Coke deposition

Carbonaceous deposits cover active sites, narrow pores and increase pressure drop. Coke is particularly important for nickel steam reforming and for acidic dehydration catalysts. Alloying nickel with copper or cobalt can reduce coke tendency, but feed composition and residence time still matter.

Sintering and agglomeration

High temperature can cause metal particles to grow, reducing the active surface. Weak metal-support interactions make this worse. Steam-reforming catalysts therefore need thermal stability, while APR catalysts must withstand repeated wetting, pressure changes and dissolved species.

Leaching

Liquid-phase operation can dissolve active metals or promoters, contaminating product and weakening the catalyst. Analyze the liquid effluent for metals during recycling tests; apparent activity retention without a leaching measurement is not proof of structural stability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reactor mismatch

Many value-added chemical studies use batch reactors. Batch data are useful for chemistry discovery but do not establish continuous-feed lifetime, heat removal, pressure drop or regeneration performance. A scale-up decision should separate initial activity from durable operation and include a regeneration protocol.

A practical catalyst-selection workflow

  1. Define the product and process constraint. Choose hydrogen, acrolein, lactic acid, 1,2-propanediol or 1,3-propanediol before selecting a metal.
  2. Choose the reaction family. Start with steam reforming or APR for hydrogen, dehydration for acrolein, oxidation for lactic acid and selective hydrogenolysis for propanediols.
  3. Set the operating window. Fix temperature, pressure, water:glycerol ratio, feed concentration and space velocity so candidates are tested fairly.
  4. Screen a support series. Vary acidity, basicity, redox capacity, oxygen-vacancy behavior and pore structure while keeping metal loading controlled.
  5. Add promoters only after establishing a baseline. For reforming, compare unmodified nickel with Ni–Cu or Ni–Co; for noble-metal systems, test whether a second metal improves selectivity or lifetime enough to justify its cost.
  6. Measure products and carbon balance. Include hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygenates, coke and dissolved metals where relevant.
  7. Run durability tests. Use continuous operation for scale-up decisions, document conversion and selectivity versus time, and test regeneration.
  8. Make the economic decision. Include catalyst lifetime, metal recovery, replacement interval, reactor pressure and separation costs—not only initial catalyst price.

Which catalyst should you choose?

For a cost-sensitive, high-temperature hydrogen process, begin with Ni/SiO2 and compare it with promoted Ni–Cu or Ni–Co formulations. The reviewed evidence makes Ni/SiO2 the stability benchmark among the cited nickel supports, while the alloy data indicate routes to lower coke and methanation.

For wet feedstocks and lower-temperature hydrogen production, evaluate APR catalysts, especially supported noble metals when coke resistance and long operation outweigh metal cost. Pt/CoAl2O4 is a notable durability example, and Pt–Rh/Al2O3 demonstrates how bimetallic design can improve reported hydrogen rate and selectivity.

For chemicals, choose by reaction: an acid catalyst for acrolein, a redox/basic catalyst for lactic acid, and a tuned metal–acid or metal–base catalyst for the specific propanediol isomer. In every case, the winning formulation is the one that sustains the required selectivity and conversion under the intended reactor conditions, not the one with the highest isolated number in a different experiment.
