Aecon Group (TSX: ARE) is the closest Canadian public-market alternative to Bird Construction (TSX: BDT) because both combine contracting with large infrastructure, industrial, utilities and energy projects. WSP Global (TSX: WSP) and Stantec (TSX: STN) provide more diversified engineering and professional-services exposure, while AtkinsRéalis (TSX: ATRL) is the more specialised nuclear and engineering choice.
The right substitute depends on what you want to own: a contractor exposed to project execution, a global engineering firm with a services model, a Canadian design and environmental specialist, or a nuclear-heavy engineering business. The comparison below uses issuer-reported FY2025 or FY2024 figures and each company’s own reporting definitions.

Bird Construction as the baseline
Bird Construction describes itself as a Canadian construction and maintenance company serving industrial, buildings and infrastructure markets. Its investor materials reported $3.7 billion of trailing-twelve-month revenue and a $6.1 billion backlog as of June 30, 2026. For FY2025, Bird reported construction revenue of $3,396.8 million, compared with $3,397.3 million in FY2024, plus $47.4 million of net income and $222.1 million of adjusted EBITDA, equal to 6.5% of revenue. These figures are from Bird Construction’s 2026 investor reporting.

Bird is not simply an engineering consultant: it bids, manages and delivers construction and maintenance work. Its results can therefore be affected by contract pricing, labour and material costs, schedule changes, claims, cash tied up in projects and the timing of major completions. An alternative with a larger backlog or faster revenue growth is not automatically a lower-risk or more profitable replacement.

Bird’s President and CEO Teri McKibbon said the company is positioned for Canada’s “long-duration nation-building investment cycle,” including LNG and nuclear capital projects and infrastructure renewal in defence, healthcare, transportation and trade. That statement describes the opportunity investors are usually trying to capture with a Canadian construction stock, but each alternative reaches those end markets through a different business model.

The companies do not report identical measures. WSP’s revenue and net revenue are both shown because the company reports both; adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure. Bird’s adjusted EBITDA and the other issuers’ profitability measures should not be treated as perfectly comparable without reading the respective financial statements.
Aecon Group (TSX: ARE): the closest direct alternative
Why Aecon resembles Bird
Aecon has the strongest overlap with Bird’s contractor and infrastructure profile. Its construction growth in FY2025 came from nuclear, industrial, urban transportation solutions, civil and utilities operations—the same broad categories that make Bird relevant to investors seeking Canadian infrastructure spending. Aecon’s FY2025 revenue was $5,435 million, a 28% increase from 2024, making it materially larger on reported revenue than Bird’s FY2025 construction revenue.
The comparison is still not one-to-one. Aecon also has exposure to concessions and has expanded in U.S. and international markets. That can broaden the addressable market, but it adds geographic, financing and project-structure considerations that are different from owning a primarily Canadian contractor.
What drove Aecon’s 2025 story
CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx described 2025 as a transformative year marked by strategic acquisitions, growth as a nuclear and power company, expansion in U.S. and international markets, and substantial completion of legacy projects including two modern light-rail systems. Those events help explain why headline growth alone is not enough: investors should separate acquisition-led expansion, project completions and underlying construction demand.

How to evaluate Aecon against Bird
- Project risk: Compare the size, contractual structure and completion stage of major projects. Large civil, transit and nuclear contracts can create substantial upside but can also produce earnings volatility if costs or schedules move.
- Backlog quality: Look beyond the headline amount. Check how much is funded, when it is expected to convert to revenue and whether margins are protected by the contract terms.
- Construction margins: Bird’s reported FY2025 adjusted EBITDA margin was 6.5%; Aecon’s comparable margin should be taken from Aecon’s own segment disclosures rather than inferred from total revenue.
- Concessions exposure: Determine whether long-lived concession assets and associated financing improve diversification or make the company less comparable to Bird’s contracting model.
- Geographic mix: Aecon’s U.S. and international expansion means currency and regional execution are part of the investment case.
Choose Aecon when you want the nearest listed substitute for Bird’s construction-and-infrastructure model and are comfortable with a larger, more diversified project portfolio. It is not the automatic choice if your priority is a lower project-risk services business.
WSP Global (TSX: WSP): infrastructure exposure through professional services
What WSP actually sells
WSP is an engineering, advisory and science-based professional-services company rather than a general contractor operating primarily through construction contracts. Its work can benefit from transport, energy, buildings, water, environmental and other infrastructure investment, but revenue is generated through design, consulting, technical advice and related services. That changes the risk and margin profile compared with Bird or Aecon.

WSP reported FY2025 revenue of $18.285 billion, net revenue of $13.959 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $2.561 billion. It also reported a record $17.1 billion backlog, equivalent to 11.0 months of revenue. The backlog-duration figure gives investors a way to think about near-term visibility, although backlog is not the same as guaranteed profit or cash flow.
Reasons to choose WSP instead of a contractor
- Professional-services economics: Engineering and advisory work generally depends more on staff utilisation, billing rates, project delivery and acquisitions than on taking direct construction cost risk.
- Global diversification: WSP’s scale provides exposure beyond Canada, which can reduce dependence on one national infrastructure cycle while introducing foreign-market and currency factors.
- Backlog visibility: The 11.0-month figure offers a reported time-based indicator that can be tracked alongside win rates, utilisation and organic growth.
Questions to ask before buying WSP
Separate organic growth from acquisition growth, examine how backlog converts into net revenue, monitor utilisation and pricing, and review geographic contributions. WSP may be a better fit for someone who wants infrastructure demand without owning a traditional general contractor; it is a less direct Bird replacement because it does not primarily earn revenue by building the asset itself.
Stantec (TSX: STN): Canadian engineering and design exposure
Business profile
Stantec is an engineering, architecture and environmental-services company. Like WSP, it participates in infrastructure spending through planning, design, consulting and technical services rather than through a contractor’s principal construction role. Its Canadian heritage can appeal to investors seeking domestic infrastructure exposure, but its operations also extend beyond Canada.

Latest reported indicators
Stantec’s FY2024 results release, issued in 2025, reported record earnings, a $7.8 billion backlog and 7.4% full-year organic growth. Organic growth in Canada was 6%. Fourth-quarter net revenue rose 19.0% to $1.5 billion. These are company-reported figures for the periods identified; they should not be mixed with Bird’s FY2025 or WSP’s FY2025 metrics as though they were the same reporting period.

Where Stantec fits
- Design-led exposure: Stantec can participate earlier in an asset’s life cycle, from planning and environmental assessment through engineering and program delivery.
- Canadian growth lens: The reported 6% Canadian organic growth provides a specific data point for investors focused on domestic demand.
- Backlog and recurring relationships: Consulting relationships and multi-stage programs can provide continuity, but investors still need to examine backlog conversion and client concentration.
Stantec is a construction-stock alternative only in the broad infrastructure-investment sense. It is not a direct substitute for Bird’s field construction operations. Its suitability depends on whether you prefer consulting and design economics over project execution.
AtkinsRéalis (TSX: ATRL): a specialised nuclear and engineering option
Why the company is different
AtkinsRéalis describes itself as an engineering-services and nuclear company. That makes it the most specialised alternative in this group. It can provide leverage to nuclear investment, complex engineering and project management, but its performance is correspondingly more dependent on the outlook, execution and risk controls of those specialised activities.
Reported FY2025 figures
AtkinsRéalis reported FY2025 total revenue of $11.0 billion, services revenue growth of 16% and a record backlog of $21.2 billion. The backlog is the largest headline figure among the alternatives listed here, but its value to shareholders depends on duration, contractual quality, margins, cash conversion and the mix between services and more execution-sensitive work.
When AtkinsRéalis may be the better choice
- Nuclear conviction: Choose it when nuclear is a central part of your thesis rather than simply one end market among many.
- Engineering-services preference: Its services orientation can be more comparable to WSP or Stantec than to Bird, even though the nuclear focus creates a distinct profile.
- International exposure: Review the countries, currencies and regulatory environments represented in the backlog before treating the company as a purely Canadian infrastructure play.
AtkinsRéalis is not the closest Bird replacement, but it may be the most targeted way in this group to express a nuclear-and-engineering view.

How the alternatives differ by investor objective
| If your priority is… | Most relevant candidate | Why | Main issue to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closest contractor comparison to Bird | Aecon | Overlapping construction, nuclear, industrial, transit, civil and utilities activities | Project execution, concessions and international mix |
| Global infrastructure exposure without primarily being a contractor | WSP | Large engineering, advisory and science-based services platform | Organic growth, utilisation, acquisitions and backlog conversion |
| Canadian engineering and environmental exposure | Stantec | Canadian growth data, architecture, engineering and environmental services | Canada versus U.S. mix, margins and acquisition strategy |
| Nuclear and specialised engineering | AtkinsRéalis | Nuclear identity, engineering-services model and large reported backlog | Nuclear concentration, execution risk and backlog duration |
This table is a decision guide, not a performance ranking. The companies’ reporting periods, segment definitions and non-GAAP measures differ, so a higher revenue or backlog number does not establish a superior investment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical framework for comparing Canadian infrastructure stocks
1. Identify the business model
Start by deciding whether you want a contractor, an engineering-services firm or a hybrid. Contractors can benefit directly from awards and construction volume but carry greater exposure to estimating, labour, materials, subcontractors and claims. Professional-services firms can have a different cost structure and may be less exposed to physical construction overruns, while relying heavily on people, utilisation, pricing and acquisitions.
2. Map the end markets
List each company’s exposure to nuclear, power, transit, industrial facilities, buildings, utilities, water, defence, healthcare and trade infrastructure. Then ask whether the exposure is direct construction, design and advisory work, project management or ownership of a concession. Two companies can mention the same end market while earning money at different points in the project life cycle.
3. Test backlog quality
- How large is backlog relative to annual revenue?
- How many months or years are represented?
- Is the work funded, awarded and contracted, or dependent on future approvals?
- What proportion is expected to convert in the next 12 months?
- Are margins and inflation protections clear?
- Could one project or customer materially change results?
Bird reports a $6.1 billion backlog as of June 30, 2026; WSP reports $17.1 billion and 11.0 months of revenue; Stantec reports $7.8 billion; AtkinsRéalis reports $21.2 billion. Those figures are useful starting points, not directly comparable forecasts.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Separate organic growth from acquisitions
Aecon’s FY2025 narrative includes strategic acquisitions and expansion in U.S. and international markets. WSP and Stantec also need to be assessed for acquisition contribution, even when headline results are strong. Organic growth indicates demand and execution within the existing platform; acquisition growth can add capabilities and scale but brings integration, financing and valuation risks.
Best Value
5. Compare profitability on a like-for-like basis
Use each issuer’s reported operating or adjusted EBITDA measures, read the reconciliation to generally accepted accounting measures, and avoid comparing one company’s adjusted figure with another’s unadjusted figure. Bird’s FY2025 adjusted EBITDA was $222.1 million, or 6.5% of revenue. Comparable figures for the alternatives should be taken from their own filings rather than calculated from the headline data in this article.
6. Check cash generation and leverage
Revenue and EBITDA do not reveal how much cash reaches shareholders. Review operating cash flow, capital expenditure, working-capital movements, debt maturities, interest costs, bonding capacity and any guarantees. Construction companies can show accounting profit while cash is temporarily absorbed by receivables, work in progress or claims. Engineering firms have different working-capital patterns, but acquisitions and earn-outs can still affect leverage.
7. Examine geographic and regulatory exposure
Bird’s thesis is closely tied to Canadian nation-building spending. Aecon adds U.S. and international expansion; WSP, Stantec and AtkinsRéalis have broader international operations. Geographic diversification can reduce reliance on one market but adds foreign-exchange, procurement, labour, tax and regulatory variables. Nuclear, transit and public infrastructure projects also face extensive permitting and political oversight.

- Fixed-price or poorly estimated work: Cost inflation, design changes and productivity problems can compress margins after a contract is won.
- Schedule and completion risk: A delayed project can defer revenue and cash, while a difficult close-out can create claims or provisions.
- Backlog conversion: Backlog is not revenue until work is performed, and it is not profit until costs and contract terms are understood.
- Public-sector timing: Elections, budgets, permitting and procurement decisions can move awards between reporting periods.
- Acquisition integration: Acquisitions can expand capability and geography but may dilute returns or increase leverage if integration falls short.
- Specialisation risk: Nuclear concentration can increase opportunity when investment rises, but it can also heighten exposure to regulatory, technical and political changes.
- Valuation: A high-quality backlog and strong growth may already be reflected in the share price. Compare enterprise value, earnings, cash flow and backlog quality rather than selecting solely by revenue growth.
How to buy and monitor a TSX alternative
- Confirm the exact listing and ticker: ARE for Aecon, WSP for WSP Global, STN for Stantec and ATRL for AtkinsRéalis. Bird’s ticker is BDT.
- Read the latest annual report, results release and management discussion before placing an order. Confirm the reporting period, segment definitions and any adjusted measures.
- Decide whether the position belongs in a diversified portfolio and set a maximum allocation before trading.
- Use a regulated brokerage that provides access to the Toronto Stock Exchange, review the quoted bid-ask spread and select a market or limit order according to your risk tolerance.
- After purchase, monitor backlog conversion, contract awards, margin guidance, operating cash flow, debt and major project updates—not just quarterly revenue.
Brokerage availability, commissions, tax treatment and account rules vary by country and account type. Investors outside Canada should also check currency conversion, withholding taxes and local securities regulations.
Bottom line
Aecon is the closest alternative to Bird Construction because its construction and infrastructure operations overlap most clearly with Bird’s exposure to nuclear, industrial, transit, civil and utilities work. WSP is the broadest professional-services alternative, Stantec offers engineering and environmental exposure with a meaningful Canadian component, and AtkinsRéalis is the specialist choice for investors focused on nuclear and complex engineering.
The best choice is therefore a portfolio decision, not a single “best stock” ranking. Use Aecon for the closest contractor comparison, WSP or Stantec when you prefer design and consulting economics, and AtkinsRéalis when nuclear specialisation is central to your thesis. In every case, compare backlog quality, contract risk, organic growth, cash generation, leverage and valuation before treating infrastructure spending as shareholder return.
