There is no universal “best” camera setup for every Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. Start with the Camera app’s defaults, then change a setting to address a specific goal: handling bright skies, softening sharpening, capturing faster, or framing a hands-free shot. Menus and features vary by model and software version, so use the options available on your phone.
Which camera settings are worth changing?
Samsung’s Camera Assistant options alter how the camera captures or processes a shot. They are choices for particular situations, not a checklist you need to enable all at once. On the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Samsung’s path is Camera > Quick controls > Settings > Camera Assistant. Install Camera Assistant if the phone prompts you. Other Fold models or software versions may use different paths or offer different options.

Camera Assistant also includes Advanced Photo mode controls that can limit shutter speed or ISO. If the preview looks unexpectedly dark, check those limits. Samsung advises setting Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None if you prefer a brighter preview; doing so may change how blur and image noise are controlled.
Which camera mode should you use?
Photo and Video are the everyday starting points. Samsung also describes modes such as Pro, Portrait, Food, Slow Motion, and Hyperlapse for Galaxy Z Fold cameras. Depending on the model, other options can include Expert RAW, Pro Video, Night, Panorama, Portrait Video, Dual Recording, and Single Take. The modes shown on your phone are the guide to what your particular model supports.

For wide or zoomed-in framing
Use the on-screen lens choices or zoom dial to change framing. On some models, Samsung illustrates the ultra-wide option with a label such as 0.6; the labels and available lenses are not universal across Fold generations. Digital zoom and lens availability also depend on the phone and mode.
For deliberate manual control
Pro mode lets you adjust controls such as shutter speed, exposure, filters, and white balance. That can help when automatic capture does not give you the look or exposure you want, but it requires more attention than Photo mode. Expert RAW is a further step for editing: Samsung Japan describes it as providing RAW files for high-resolution HDR photography and detailed post-processing. Its support list includes Galaxy Z Fold2 5G and Fold3 through Fold8 models, including Fold8 Ultra; app installation and availability may depend on region and device.

How can the Fold’s screens help with framing?
Show a subject the preview
On supported models, Cover Screen Preview displays a live camera preview on the cover screen. A person being photographed can see the framing and adjust their pose or position before you take the picture, which is useful for portraits and group shots.

Flex Mode lets you partly fold a Galaxy foldable into an L shape and place it on a stable surface, with the image on the upper screen and controls below. It can help with hands-free framing without holding the phone. Support varies by device and app; Samsung’s cited guidance says Flex Mode is not supported on Galaxy Z TriFold or Z Fold8. For a more stable setup, a mount or tripod may be an option, but verify that it fits your exact Fold generation before buying.

Should you record video in HDR?
HDR video can preserve a wider range of brightness and color, but playback compatibility matters if you plan to share the file. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 guidance shows HDR under Camera > Quick controls > Settings > Advanced video options and warns that 10-bit HDR video may not play on devices that do not support it. Samsung also describes an on-device conversion path to SDR. This is Fold7-specific guidance; check your own model’s video settings and consider the devices that will play the clip.

- Clean the lens. Smudges can make photos or video look blurry or hazy.
- Check the light and angle. Strong light sources or an awkward shooting angle can affect the result; try changing your position or the conditions.
- Investigate a dark preview. Advanced Photo mode’s shutter-speed or ISO limits may be affecting brightness. Review Camera Assistant before changing several unrelated options.
- Wait for condensation to clear. Samsung says temperature differences can cause condensation that makes the camera view look foggy or hazy; let it clear naturally.
