How to Evaluate Semiconductor Stocks: Revenue Growth, Margins, and Valuation

Evaluate semiconductor stocks by tracing revenue and margins across the cycle, identifying the operating drivers behind each change, and testing the assumptions embedded in valuation. A single quarter or headline multiple is not enough: customer demand, product mix, manufacturing utilization, and business model can all change what the numbers mean.

How should you evaluate semiconductor revenue growth?

Start with reported revenue over several quarters and years. Compare the same fiscal periods when seasonality may affect results, then investigate what drove the change rather than treating growth as self-explanatory.

  • Volume and orders: Check shipments, customer orders, inventory adjustments, backlog, or book-to-bill figures where the company reports them.
  • Price and product mix: Ask whether revenue changed because of average selling prices, a shift among products or technologies, or both.
  • New products and design wins: Look for company disclosures about product acceptance and customer programs.
  • End-market demand: Identify which markets drive the company and whether their demand is strengthening or weakening.

These checks matter because semiconductor revenue is exposed to customer demand, order changes, end-market conditions, and industry cycles. Diodes Incorporated’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its business as highly cyclical and identifies economic and industry conditions, customer order levels, pricing, and new-product acceptance as factors affecting net sales. Treat those factors as a useful checklist, not a universal account of every chip company.

Inventory can also distort the apparent direction of demand. GlobalFoundries said in its 2025 Form 20-F that customers reduced some excess inventory built up in earlier years, with inventory patterns varying by customer and end market. Management described demand as gradually normalizing across most of its major end markets in 2025. That account applies to GlobalFoundries’ business; it does not establish a synchronized recovery across all semiconductor segments.

What do changing margins tell you?

Gross margin is gross profit as a share of revenue. Operating margin also reflects operating expenses. For either measure, identify the cause of a change before deciding whether it signals a durable improvement or a temporary cycle effect.

  • Pricing: Determine whether selling prices rose or fell, and whether that movement is broad or concentrated in certain products.
  • Product and technology mix: A shift in what the company sells can change average margins even if unit costs are stable.
  • Manufacturing yields and utilization: For manufacturers, production efficiency and how much available capacity is in use can affect unit economics.
  • Fixed costs and spending: Consider whether factory costs, depreciation, maintenance, or operating expenses changed relative to output and revenue.

GlobalFoundries stated in its 2025 Form 20-F: “Product mix is among the most important factors affecting revenue and margins, as our wafer price varies significantly across technology platforms.” The point is practical: a margin percentage needs an operating explanation, especially when a company sells products or services with different economics.

Why foundry utilization deserves separate attention

Foundries carry substantial factory costs, so utilization can help explain margin movement. GlobalFoundries reported average shipment utilization of 86% in 2025, compared with 77% in 2024. The company defines utilization as wafer shipments divided by estimated manufacturing capacity. Its filing explains that staffing, electricity, infrastructure, depreciation, and maintenance remain significant regardless of wafer output. These are GlobalFoundries-specific figures and definitions; use another issuer’s own disclosures rather than applying them across the industry.

Compare margins within the right business context

A fabless chip designer, an integrated manufacturer, and a contract foundry do not have the same production exposure or cost structure. Their gross margins therefore should not be treated as directly interchangeable measures of quality. Compare companies with reasonably similar business models, and explain any important differences in manufacturing exposure and disclosed metrics.

How should you compare semiconductor companies?

Build comparisons around business drivers and use the same reporting periods where possible. Metrics are not interchangeable across every semiconductor business, so note how each company defines them.

Comparison axis What to examine
Business model and manufacturing exposure Whether the company is fabless, an integrated manufacturer, or a foundry, and which production costs or capacity measures it discloses.
End markets and cycle exposure The markets served, their demand conditions, and how sensitive reported results are to customer orders or inventory changes.
Growth drivers Shipment volumes, pricing, product or technology mix, new-product acceptance, and customer demand.
Margins and operations Gross and operating margin trends, utilization or yields where relevant, and the costs or spending behind changes.
Orders and inventory Backlog, book-to-bill, inventory turnover, or other measures the issuer discloses, with definitions and periods.
Customer concentration How much revenue depends on major customers and whether the filing identifies concentration risks.
Cash generation and investment needs Cash generation alongside the reinvestment or capacity needs associated with the company’s business model.
Valuation assumptions The growth, margin, cash-flow, and other expectations reflected in the valuation method or multiple.

Customer concentration can make a seemingly broad revenue trend reliant on a few buyers. GlobalFoundries reported that Customer A represented 16.4% of total wafer revenue in 2025, Customer C represented 13.9%, and Customer B represented less than 10%. Those are figures for one issuer, not semiconductor-industry averages; check each company’s own customer-concentration disclosures.

Companies also choose different performance indicators. onsemi’s 2025 Form 10-K lists net revenues, gross profit margin, segment operating income, end-period backlog, book-to-bill ratio, inventory turnover, average selling prices, net cash, and free cash generation among its performance metrics. These are candidate questions to investigate, not a required scorecard for every issuer.

How do you assess semiconductor stock valuation?

No single valuation multiple determines whether a semiconductor stock is attractive. If using a multiple, identify the measure, time period, company’s position in the cycle, and comparison group. Avoid comparing firms with materially different business models or cycle exposure as though their multiples have the same meaning.

A discounted cash flow analysis makes the assumptions more explicit. Examine projected revenue growth, margins, cash flows, reinvestment or capital needs, and discount rate. GlobalFoundries’ 2025 Form 20-F identifies future cash flows, expected revenue growth rates, royalty rates, technology migration, and the discount rate among assumptions used in a valuation method. That illustrates why a valuation output depends on its inputs; it does not establish a fair value for GlobalFoundries shares.

The cited company filings do not provide current share prices, market capitalizations, forward estimates, or peer valuation multiples. They cannot support a current price target or a claim that a named semiconductor stock is cheap or expensive.
