Start in manual mode at f/2.8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000 and 4000 K white balance. Mount the camera on a sturdy tripod, use the widest fast lens you have, focus manually on a distant star, and trigger a continuous RAW sequence with a timer or cable. Treat those values as a starting point: moonlight, light pollution, lens focal length and your camera’s sensor determine the final exposure.

The starting settings that work for both showers

Professional photographer Diana Robinson’s Nikon starting point is manual exposure, f/2.8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000 and 4000° Kelvin white balance. It is a practical first frame for a fast wide-angle lens under a reasonably dark sky, not a universal preset. Make a test exposure, inspect the histogram and highlights, then change one control at a time.

Control Starting value What to change in the field
Exposure mode Manual (M) Manual mode keeps every frame consistent while the camera records a long sequence.
Aperture f/2.8 Use the lens’s widest practical aperture. If corner stars are unacceptable, stop down one third or one full stop and compensate elsewhere.
Shutter speed 20 seconds Keep the exposure within the star-trailing limit for your focal length; shorten it if stars visibly move.
ISO 4000 Lower it when the sky is bright or highlights clip; raise it only when the frame remains too dark after opening the aperture and using the longest acceptable shutter.
White balance 4000 K A fixed value keeps a time-lapse visually consistent. RAW files let you refine color later.
File type RAW RAW preserves adjustment latitude for faint meteors, gradients and color correction.
Drive mode Continuous or interval sequence More uninterrupted frames increase the chance that one contains a meteor.

There is no independently tested setting that is best for every camera and location. The figures above come from manufacturer and NASA guidance and must be adapted to the moon phase, local light pollution, lens and sensor.

Why wide, fast lenses and long sequences matter

Cover more sky with a wide focal length

Meteors appear unpredictably. A wide-angle lens places more sky in each frame, improving the chance that a fast streak crosses the image. NASA specifically recommends a wide-angle lens for this reason. A 14–20 mm lens on a full-frame camera gives substantially more coverage than a 35 mm lens; on a crop-sensor camera, use the lens’s 35 mm-equivalent field of view when applying the exposure limit.

Collect probability, not a single “perfect” frame

A meteor may occur in any second, so one carefully timed photograph is a poor strategy. Canon recommends continuous shooting to increase the chance of recording one in a frame. Set the camera to repeat exposures with the smallest practical gap and let it run for hours. An intervalometer, built-in interval timer or cable release prevents the camera from stopping after a single exposure.

Stabilize every exposure

Use a sturdy tripod on firm ground. NASA notes that long exposures require a tripod, and a timer or shutter-release cable prevents vibration caused by pressing the shutter. Turn off image stabilization when the camera and lens are firmly mounted if your equipment manual warns that stabilization can introduce movement on a locked tripod.

Keep stars sharp with the 500 Rule

Use the 500 Rule as an initial maximum exposure: divide 500 by the focal length in millimeters. NASA gives 25 seconds for a 20 mm lens before star movement becomes visible; Nikon likewise advises starting around 25 seconds or less. The rule is an approximation, so inspect a test frame at 100 percent magnification and shorten the exposure if stars are no longer points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Focal length 500 Rule starting limit Practical implication
14 mm About 35 seconds Allows a longer exposure, but sky glow may require less time.
16 mm About 31 seconds Useful for broad coverage while retaining a generous limit.
20 mm 25 seconds NASA’s example; a 20-second starting exposure is comfortably inside it.
24 mm About 21 seconds Use roughly 20 seconds as a first test.
35 mm About 14 seconds Shorter frames reduce trailing but cover less sky.
50 mm About 10 seconds Requires more frames and more precise composition to catch a meteor.

These limits describe visible star movement, not meteor brightness. A bright meteor can be captured in a shorter exposure, but shorter frames also create more files and more gaps. If your camera has a high-resolution sensor or you are viewing at extreme magnification, use a more conservative time than the rule suggests.

Adjust exposure for darkness, moonlight and city glow

When the frame is too dark

  1. Confirm that the lens is actually at its intended aperture and that the focus has not shifted.
  2. Open the aperture to a smaller f-number if the lens permits.
  3. Increase ISO if the sky remains dark and the shutter is already near the focal-length limit.
  4. Only lengthen the shutter when the 500 Rule and your test frame still show sharp stars.

NASA recommends opening the aperture or raising ISO when frames are too dark. Make one change, record another frame and compare it with the previous histogram so you know which adjustment helped.

When the sky is washed out

  1. Lower ISO first if the highlights and sky background are excessive.
  2. Shorten the exposure while staying within the star-sharpness target.
  3. Stop down slightly if the lens is already producing a bright, uneven sky at its widest aperture.

Bright urban horizons and moonlit clouds can dominate a meteor’s faint trail. Point toward the darkest part of the sky and keep a bright foreground light out of the frame when composition allows.

Read the histogram, not the LCD brightness

The rear screen can make a night image look brighter or darker than the captured file. Check that the histogram is not piled against the right edge and that important highlights are not blinking. A dark-looking histogram is normal for a night sky; the goal is to preserve stars and any foreground detail without clipping the sky glow.

Focus, white balance and camera controls

Set focus once, then lock it

Autofocus often hunts in darkness. Before the shower begins, use live view at high magnification on a bright star or distant light, adjust focus until the point is smallest, then switch the lens to manual focus. Check focus again if the lens is bumped or the temperature changes substantially. Do not rely on the infinity mark alone; marks vary between lenses.

  • 【More Compatibility】This camera tripod with standard 1/4'' thread, which can be applied to most Arca-Swiss quick release plates; 1/4" screw is suitable for most cameras, DSLR camera, projector and telescope, etc.

Use a fixed white balance

Set 4000 K as the starting white balance rather than Auto. A fixed value prevents the color of a time-lapse from changing between frames. Because you are recording RAW, you can fine-tune the final temperature and tint during processing without changing the exposure.

Disable sources of accidental movement

Use the camera’s electronic front-curtain or electronic shutter option if it is available and does not create artifacts with your camera. Turn off long-exposure noise reduction when it inserts a dark frame after every exposure; otherwise, those pauses reduce the uninterrupted time available for meteor capture. Keep high-ISO noise reduction low or off for RAW capture so faint streaks are not smeared by in-camera processing.

A field workflow that maximizes meteor frames

  1. Scout in daylight. Choose a stable tripod position with a clear view of the intended sky and a safe, unobstructed place to operate for several hours.
  2. Mount and level the camera. Attach the fastest wide-angle lens, secure every tripod lock and frame enough sky to allow for later cropping.
  3. Compose for coverage. Include a small amount of foreground only if it remains dark and stationary. Avoid bright lamps, windows and reflective surfaces.
  4. Focus manually. Magnify a star in live view, refine focus, then disable autofocus.
  5. Enter the baseline exposure. Start at f/2.8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000 and 4000 K, then make a test frame.
  6. Apply the focal-length limit. Compare the 20-second exposure with the 500 Rule for your lens. Use the shorter value when necessary.
  7. Check the histogram and stars. Adjust one setting at a time for brightness or trailing, and record the final values so you can reproduce them.
  8. Set RAW and continuous capture. Use a cable release, timer or intervalometer. Set the smallest gap your camera can manage between frames.
  9. Let the sequence run. Keep the camera operating for hours, especially from after midnight toward dawn when meteor rates generally increase.
  10. Monitor without disturbing the setup. Check battery, storage, dew and focus periodically, using a dim red light if you need to work near the tripod.

The objective is a large, uninterrupted set of consistent frames. Do not stop the sequence after a few empty images; most frames will not contain a meteor.

Eta Aquariids: settings and timing

The Eta Aquariids are produced by Comet 1P/Halley. NASA places their peak in early May and says they are best placed for Southern Hemisphere observers. Under dark northern-hemisphere skies, NASA lists about 10 meteors per hour and a velocity of 40.7 miles (65.4 km) per second. That speed makes a wide field and many consecutive exposures more valuable than trying to predict one exact streak.

Plan for the pre-dawn window

Schedule the sequence after midnight and continue toward dawn when the shower’s rates generally improve. In the Southern Hemisphere, choose a composition that leaves plenty of sky above the horizon and avoids trees or buildings in the direction of the visible shower activity. In northern locations, dark skies remain important because the quoted rate is an approximate dark-sky figure, not a guarantee from a suburban site.

Eta Aquariid exposure strategy

Begin with the shared baseline and use the 500 Rule for your focal length. If the sky brightens toward dawn, lower ISO or shorten the shutter rather than allowing the background to wash out. If the scene remains dark, preserve the longest star-sharp exposure and open the lens before making a large ISO increase.

Orionids: settings and timing

The Orionids also come from Comet 1P/Halley. NASA lists the 2026 activity period as October 2 through November 7, with the peak on October 21–22. Under dark skies, the expected rate is about 10–20 meteors per hour and the velocity is near 41 miles (66 km) per second.

Use the October 21–22 peak as your main session

Plan at least one long sequence around the night of October 21–22, 2026, while checking local weather and moon conditions. The same after-midnight-to-dawn strategy applies: remain set up through the hours when rates generally rise, and favor the darkest available view.

Orionid exposure strategy

Fast Orionids can cross a frame quickly, so do not lengthen the exposure merely to make a single meteor brighter. Keep stars sharp with the focal-length limit, use a wide lens and maximize the number of consecutive frames. If light pollution or moonlight raises the background, shorten the shutter or lower ISO before sacrificing focus or stability.

Eta Aquariids versus Orionids at a glance

Factor Eta Aquariids Orionids
Parent comet 1P/Halley 1P/Halley
2026 timing stated by NASA Peak in early May Active October 2–November 7; peak October 21–22
Best geographic advantage Southern Hemisphere observers October mid-month nights are the key opportunity worldwide; local geometry and darkness still matter
Dark-sky rate About 10 per hour in NASA’s northern-hemisphere guidance About 10–20 per hour
Speed 40.7 mph (65.4 km/s) About 41 mph (66 km/s)
Most important camera choice Wide field and a long, uninterrupted pre-dawn sequence Wide field and a long sequence around October 21–22

The exposure controls do not change because the shower has a different name. Season, latitude, darkness and available hours change how many meteors you can record; the camera still benefits from a fast wide lens, stable support and consistent frames.

How to avoid star trails while still recording meteors

  • Calculate the 500 Rule limit from the actual focal length, not the lens’s maximum aperture.
  • Start at 20 seconds and shorten the exposure if a 20–25 second frame shows movement.
  • Use a wider lens when possible; it permits a longer calculated limit and covers more sky.
  • Keep the tripod completely still and avoid touching the camera during the sequence.
  • Review a test frame at 100 percent before committing to hours of capture.
  • Accept that a meteor’s own streak is motion; the goal is round background stars with a sharp meteor trail, not a motionless sky.

Star movement is cumulative across the exposure, while a meteor’s trail is created during its brief passage. A 10-second exposure may be preferable to a 25-second exposure with obvious star elongation, even though it records less total light per frame.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Every frame is soft Autofocus shifted or focus was set inaccurately. Refocus on a magnified star, switch to manual focus and avoid touching the lens.
Stars are short lines Exposure exceeds the focal-length limit or the tripod moved. Shorten shutter time using the 500 Rule and check tripod locks, ground stability and cable tension.
Sky is gray or orange Light pollution or moonlight is overexposing the background. Lower ISO, shorten exposure, stop down slightly or recompose toward the darkest sky.
Frames are nearly black Exposure is too short, aperture too small or ISO too low. Open the aperture, raise ISO or lengthen the shutter within the star-sharpness limit.
There are long gaps between images In-camera noise reduction, slow card writing or a long interval was enabled. Use RAW, disable dark-frame subtraction when appropriate, reduce the interval and use a fast, sufficiently large card.
Colors change through the time-lapse Auto white balance is varying between frames. Lock white balance at 4000 K and adjust the RAW files consistently later.
Battery dies before dawn Long exposure, cold conditions and a bright display consume power. Begin with a full battery, carry a charged spare or external power source compatible with the camera, and dim the screen.
Dew obscures the lens Front element temperature has fallen to the dew point. Use a lens hood and a compatible dew heater or gently monitor the front element without moving the tripod.

Processing a meteor sequence

Apply the same white balance, exposure, contrast and lens corrections to the full sequence before selecting frames. Keep the original RAW files. A meteor may be faint in the unedited frame but become visible after a modest increase in contrast and a controlled reduction of sky-gradient brightness. Avoid aggressive noise reduction that erases thin trails.

For a single image, choose a frame with sharp stars and a meteor that is not clipped. For a composite, align the sky frames before blending and keep the foreground from a separate stationary exposure if the camera position remained fixed. The capture settings determine what information is available; no software can recover a meteor that fell between widely spaced exposures.

The practical decision rule

Use the Nikon baseline—manual, f/2.8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000, 4000 K—as your first test. Then prioritize, in order: star sharpness under the 500 Rule, a sky background that is not blown out, and the longest uninterrupted sequence your battery and storage allow. For both Halley-related showers, a wide field, stable tripod and hours of continuous RAW frames give you a better chance than chasing a supposedly perfect ISO or shutter speed.
