Best camera settings for getting sharper photos from a 108MP phone

The sharpest photo from a 108MP phone usually comes from the normal Photo mode on the main 1x camera—not automatically from the 108MP setting. Clean the lens, keep the phone steady, tap the important subject detail to focus, and use focus/exposure lock when your camera offers it. Switch to 108MP only when there is plenty of light, the subject is still, and you need additional cropping or print detail. In dim scenes or with moving people and pets, the phone’s lower-resolution pixel-binned mode, extra light, a fast enough shutter, and stabilisation generally produce a sharper file.

The starting settings that work for most shots

Before changing advanced controls, set up the phone so the camera is using its best hardware and processing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Clean the lens. Fingerprints and fine dust create a low-contrast haze that can look like missed focus, especially around lights.
  2. Use the main 1x camera. It normally has the largest sensor and the strongest image processing. Avoid digital zoom when you can move closer; use a dedicated optical lens if your phone provides one.
  3. Choose normal Photo mode first. This mode often combines pixel binning, HDR, sharpening and noise reduction more effectively than the separate 108MP mode.
  4. Tap the most important detail. For a face, tap an eye; for a product, tap the label or edge you need to read. Recompose only after focus has settled.
  5. Lock focus and exposure when available. A lock prevents the phone from refocusing or changing brightness between frames when the subject or lighting is not changing.
  6. Brace the phone. Hold it with both hands, keep elbows close to your body, and press the shutter gently. Lean against a wall or rest the phone on a solid surface for longer exposures.

These choices address the two main causes of softness: the camera focusing on the wrong distance and movement during the exposure. Megapixel count cannot recover either error.

108MP mode versus the normal pixel-binned mode

A 108MP capture records many more individual pixels, but that does not guarantee more visible detail. High-resolution capture makes a small focus error or hand movement easier to see, and it may disable some of the phone’s computational processing. Compare the modes against the conditions in which you are shooting.

Decision factor Normal pixel-binned mode 108MP mode
Available light Better choice in dim, indoor or overcast light because the phone can combine pixels and apply its normal computational processing. Best in strong, even light. Shadows and noise become more difficult when each tiny pixel receives little light.
Subject motion Usually safer for people, pets, vehicles and children because the phone can use a faster capture and stronger motion handling. Use only for a genuinely still subject. Movement can produce blur that is magnified when you crop.
Hand stability More forgiving of small hand movements. Use a firm two-handed grip, support or tripod. The extra resolution exposes camera shake.
Cropping and large prints Enough for ordinary sharing and moderate crops. Useful when you need to crop substantially or make a large print and the original frame is sharp.
Noise tolerance Pixel binning generally gives a cleaner-looking image at the same light level. Can show more noise when light is weak; do not raise resolution to solve an exposure problem.
Processing time and file size Usually quicker to save and easier to store and share. Usually creates a larger file and may take longer to process. The exact size and delay depend on the phone.
HDR and night processing Often receives the camera app’s full HDR, night and scene-processing pipeline. Some phones limit or disable those features in 108MP mode. Check the model’s camera documentation.

The correct choice is therefore conditional: use 108MP for well-lit, static detail that you expect to crop; use the normal mode when light is limited, the subject moves, or the phone cannot be held perfectly still.

Best settings for daylight and still subjects

Use 108MP only when the scene can support it

Bright daylight, a stationary subject and a stable phone are the ideal combination. A building, landscape, artwork or product on a table can benefit from the extra sampling if the image is critically focused. Mount the phone or brace it, select 108MP, tap the finest detail, and wait for the capture to finish before moving.

Do not use 108MP merely because the label sounds higher quality. If branches are moving, a person is shifting weight, or you are hand-holding in shade, the normal mode may preserve more real detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep ISO low when there is enough light

Oklahoma State University Extension’s 2023 exposure guide uses ISO 100–200 as a bright-day example and notes that higher ISO adds grain or noise. Let the phone stay near its lowest practical ISO in sunlight. If your Pro mode exposes the scene correctly at a low ISO, there is no sharpness benefit in raising it.

Control reflections and contrast

Change your angle slightly when glass, polished surfaces or wet pavement create glare. Tap the subject again after recomposing, because moving the framing can place the focus point over a different distance. If your phone offers HDR in normal Photo mode but not in 108MP mode, keep the normal mode for scenes with bright sky and dark foreground unless the extra crop detail is essential.

Best settings for people, pets and moving subjects

Prioritise a fast enough shutter

Motion blur is caused by the subject moving during the exposure, by your hands moving, or by both. Google Pixel Camera product manager Alex King describes the effect directly: “If you set a faster shutter speed, you’ll get an effect that looks like you’re freezing motion.” Use the fastest shutter that still gives a usable exposure; there is no single value that works for every 108MP phone, distance or type of movement.

If the subject is running, dancing or waving, start with a faster shutter in the phone’s Pro controls if available. The image may become darker, so add light or raise ISO only as much as needed. A slightly noisy sharp frame is usually more useful than a clean but blurred one.

Add light before accepting very high ISO

Move the person near a window, turn on room lights, or use a continuous light where appropriate. More light lets the phone maintain a faster shutter with less amplification. Avoid relying on a flash close to reflective glasses or shiny skin unless you have no better option.

Use a sequence when the decisive moment matters

Burst or continuous shooting can increase the chance that one frame catches a blink-free, sharp expression. Burst behavior differs by phone, so check what your camera app calls it and whether it changes resolution or disables HDR. Review the individual frames at 100 percent before deleting the rest.

Stay with normal Photo mode for most action

108MP files can be excellent for a posed person outdoors, but the mode’s extra detail also magnifies a tiny focus or movement error. For children, pets and candid events, the normal pixel-binned mode is generally the more reliable starting point.

Best settings for low light and night scenes

Use Night mode or Night Sight and stay still

Google Pixel Camera Help states: “When your device is steady, you can take a photo in low-light conditions and of the night sky without the flash.” Select your phone’s Night mode or Night Sight, frame the scene, and hold the phone completely still for the entire capture. Do not lower it when the screen appears to have finished; the app may still be merging frames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what multi-frame capture can and cannot do

Google Research’s 2018 description of Night Sight covers scenes from about 3 lux down to 0.3 lux. In the documented Pixel implementation, the camera could merge up to 15 frames when handheld and up to 6 frames on a tripod. Those figures describe that implementation, not a universal limit for every 108MP phone. Multi-frame processing improves signal-to-noise when the phone is stabilised, but a person, pet or branch that moves between frames can appear doubled or blurred.

Photograph stars and very dark scenes

  1. Place the phone on a steady surface or tripod.
  2. Compose before starting the timer; touching the phone during the exposure can introduce shake.
  3. Set a self-timer so pressing the shutter does not move the device.
  4. Use the camera’s night-sky or astrophotography option if your model provides one.
  5. Keep the phone untouched until the app confirms that the capture is complete.

Some supported Pixel models provide a Far focus option for subjects more than 4 metres away during night-sky photography. Other manufacturers may use a different label or offer no equivalent control, so do not assume the option exists on every 108MP device.

Do not force 108MP at night

High-resolution mode is usually the wrong tool for a dark scene. The normal mode may combine pixels, extend exposure when stabilised and apply noise reduction that the 108MP mode does not support. Choose 108MP at night only after confirming that your specific phone retains its night processing and that the subject and phone will remain still.

Focus and exposure controls

Tap, then lock

Touch the subject on the preview to set focus and exposure. On supported phones, press and hold the focus area or use the lock control to keep those settings fixed. Locking is useful when shooting several frames of the same object, photographing through a window, or recomposing a portrait against a bright background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lock cannot make a moving subject sharp. It only prevents the camera from changing distance or brightness unexpectedly. If the subject moves toward or away from the phone, tap again or use an appropriate tracking mode.

Use manual focus carefully

Some phones expose manual focus in Pro mode. Move the focus slider while watching fine edges, then stop when the critical detail is at its clearest. Manual focus is helpful for distant night scenes or subjects behind glass, but autofocus is often more accurate for ordinary people and close objects.

Use the phone’s supported Pro controls

Google documents Pro Controls for focus, shutter speed and ISO on supported Pixel models. Menus and availability vary by manufacturer, model and camera application. Before following any exact path, identify the phone model and its camera version; a control shown on one device may be absent, renamed or restricted on another.

How ISO and shutter speed affect sharpness

Change What it does Sharpness consequence
Shorter/faster shutter Reduces the time during which motion is recorded. Usually reduces subject and hand blur, but darkens the image.
Longer/slower shutter Allows more light to reach the sensor. Brightens a static scene but increases blur risk unless the phone and subject are steady.
Higher ISO Amplifies the recorded signal to brighten the frame. Can preserve a fast shutter, but adds grain and colour noise.
Lower ISO Uses less amplification. Produces a cleaner file when there is enough light or the phone is stabilised.

There is no universal “best” ISO or shutter number for a 108MP phone. Sensor size, lens aperture, stabilisation, focal length and the camera app’s processing all change the result. Use this sequence instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether the subject is moving.
  2. Choose the fastest shutter that freezes that movement.
  3. Add light if possible.
  4. Raise ISO only until the exposure is usable.
  5. If the subject is static, lower ISO and support the phone before considering a longer exposure.

As a practical reference, Oklahoma State University Extension gives ISO 100–200 as a bright-day example and ISO 800–1600 as an indoor or cloudy example, while warning that higher ISO produces more grain. Treat those as illustrative starting ranges, not mandatory settings for every phone.

Stability techniques that make a larger difference than resolution

  • Use two hands and a three-point hold: both hands plus your forehead or body can reduce rotation.
  • Keep the phone close to your torso: extended arms magnify small movements.
  • Use a timer: a two- or three-second delay prevents the shutter press from shaking the phone, especially on a tripod.
  • Support the camera for static scenes: a table, wall, railing or tripod is better than squeezing the phone tightly.
  • Do not touch during a night capture: multi-frame processing needs consistent alignment.
  • Check the preview at full size: a photo can look sharp as a thumbnail while fine text and eyelashes reveal blur.

A repeatable workflow for a sharp 108MP daylight photo

  1. Identify the subject’s movement. If anything important is moving, start in normal Photo mode rather than 108MP.
  2. Clean the lens and select the main 1x camera. Avoid digital zoom.
  3. Stabilise the phone. Use support or a tripod for architecture, products and landscapes.
  4. Set the resolution. Select 108MP only if the light is strong and you need extra cropping or print detail.
  5. Tap the critical detail. Lock focus and exposure if the option is available.
  6. Check exposure. Keep ISO low when possible; protect bright highlights rather than making the entire frame unnecessarily bright.
  7. Capture several frames. Keep the composition fixed and vary only what you need to test, such as exposure or focus.
  8. Inspect before moving. Zoom into the eyes, lettering or edges that matter. If they are soft, repeat with better support or normal mode.

A repeatable workflow for sharper night photos

  1. Switch to Night mode or Night Sight. Do not assume 108MP mode includes the same processing.
  2. Remove avoidable light sources from the lens path. Wipe the lens and shade it from nearby glare without blocking the camera.
  3. Mount or brace the phone. A stable surface lets the app use a longer, cleaner exposure.
  4. Use the self-timer. Start the capture without touching the phone afterward.
  5. Lock focus when appropriate. For a distant scene, use the model’s far-focus or equivalent setting if documented.
  6. Keep moving subjects out of the critical area. People and vehicles can blur during multi-frame capture; add light or use a faster exposure when movement is unavoidable.
  7. Wait for completion. Do not interrupt the merge by lowering the phone early.

RAW files: more editing latitude, not a blur cure

Google explains that RAW files are less compressed than JPEG files and retain more data for adjustments such as white balance, dynamic range and noise reduction. RAW can help you recover colour or tone when the exposure is close, but it cannot repair camera shake, missed focus or subject motion. Capture RAW when you expect to edit and have storage for larger files; use the processed JPEG or HEIC when you need a finished file quickly.

When editing a sharp RAW file, apply noise reduction before aggressive sharpening. Excessive sharpening can create halos around edges and make noise look like detail. If the original is blurred, editing may increase contrast around the blur without restoring the lost information.

Why your 108MP photos look blurry

The phone moved

Look for softness in every part of the frame, including background objects that should be still. Repeat with a support, timer and normal mode. If the supported 108MP file becomes sharp on a tripod, hand movement was the limiting factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The subject moved

Faces, hands, pet fur and leaves show directional smearing while static objects remain clearer. Use more light and a faster shutter, or return to normal Photo mode. Night modes that merge multiple frames are especially vulnerable to movement between frames.

Focus landed on the wrong distance

One plane may be sharp while the intended detail is soft. Tap the subject again, lock focus, and avoid recomposing so far that the camera chooses a new target. For distant scenes, use a documented far-focus or manual-focus option if your phone provides one.

Digital zoom or a dirty lens reduced detail

Digital zoom enlarges the centre of the image without adding optical information. Clean the lens and move closer, or switch to the phone’s optical camera. A hazy glow around lights is commonly a lens or protective-glass problem rather than a resolution problem.

The phone changed processing in 108MP mode

Some camera apps disable HDR, night processing or other computational features at full resolution. Compare a normally exposed frame in both modes under the same light. If the normal mode has cleaner shadows or better highlight detail, use it unless the crop requirement justifies the trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose settings on a specific phone

Camera labels differ across manufacturers and even between software updates. Before giving yourself a menu path, note the exact phone model, camera app and operating-system version. Look for settings labelled 108MP, High resolution, Pro, Night, Night Sight, RAW, focus lock or exposure lock; the wording is not universal.

On supported Pixel models, Google documents Pro Controls for focus, shutter speed and ISO, as well as a Far focus option for certain night-sky captures. A different 108MP phone may place equivalent controls under a More tab, a gear icon or a separate Pro camera, and may restrict them at 108MP resolution. If a control disappears after selecting 108MP, that is a mode limitation to account for—not a setting you should try to override blindly.

Quick decision checklist

  • Bright and still: try 108MP, low ISO, careful focus and solid support.
  • Bright but moving: normal Photo mode, fast shutter, added light and a short burst if useful.
  • Indoor or cloudy: start in normal mode; use ISO only as high as necessary for a sharp shutter.
  • Dark and still: Night mode, tripod or support, timer and no touching during capture.
  • Dark and moving: add light, use a faster exposure and accept that normal mode may outperform Night mode.
  • Need a heavy crop or large print: use 108MP only after confirming the frame is sharp at full size.
  • Need the cleanest shareable file: use the normal mode unless the scene specifically benefits from 108MP.
