The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best all-round choice for extreme-zoom photography. Its two dedicated telephoto cameras cover both nearer and farther subjects, making it more versatile for wildlife, sports, travel and the moon. The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is the better fit if you prefer computational enhancement and quick point-and-shoot results, while the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is aimed at enthusiasts who prioritize specialist still-photo hardware. Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max when video capture and Apple-device integration matter more than maximum zoom reach.

Those recommendations describe practical shooting, not just the largest number on a camera app. Optical reach comes from a real telephoto lens; digital and AI-assisted modes extend that view by cropping and processing it. Light, stabilization, subject movement, atmospheric haze and the phone’s processing can change the result dramatically.

Quick comparison: the phones with the longest useful reach

Phone Published zoom hardware or software Best suited to Main trade-off
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 10MP 3x telephoto plus 50MP 5x periscope; Samsung also markets higher AI-assisted zoom steps Wildlife, sports, travel and subjects at mixed distances Processing and high-zoom results can vary with light and firmware; regional specifications should be checked
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 48MP 5x periscope with Super Res Zoom up to 30x Fast, computationally enhanced distant-subject shots One native telephoto focal length leaves less optical coverage between the main camera and 5x
Xiaomi 15 Ultra 4.3x telephoto; comparison coverage reports capability up to 30x Enthusiast still photography and detailed subjects in good light Availability and software support vary by market; megapixels alone do not guarantee more detail
iPhone 16 Pro Max 12MP 5x tetraprism optical telephoto Video creators and Apple-ecosystem users who also need long reach Comparative coverage places it behind the Galaxy S25 Ultra for maximum optical and software-assisted zoom range

The table’s multipliers are not equivalent. A 5x lens is optical at its native focal length; a 30x or higher setting combines that lens with cropping and computation. Treat the number as a framing option, not a promise that every pixel will remain clear.

What “extreme zoom” means on a phone

Optical zoom is the detail-preserving foundation

A dedicated telephoto lens changes magnification with glass rather than simply enlarging an image. Periscope designs fold the light path inside the phone, allowing a longer effective focal length without making the handset as thick as a conventional camera. Apple’s tetraprism design uses a similar folded-path idea. At the lens’s native setting, detail is primarily limited by the sensor, optics, focus accuracy and available light.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Computational zoom extends the native lens

Digital zoom crops the sensor output. Computational systems add multi-frame capture, sharpening, noise reduction and, in some modes, AI-generated reconstruction. Google’s Super Res Zoom is an example: its headline 30x setting is built around a 5x periscope, not a 30x optical lens. Samsung and Xiaomi also offer software-assisted steps beyond their native telephoto positions.

Very high megapixel counts do not automatically beat a lower-resolution competitor. Pixel size, lens quality, stabilization, focus and processing all affect the final crop. Android Authority’s comparison specifically cautions against treating megapixels as a guarantee of superior distant detail.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: the most flexible extreme-zoom setup

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the default recommendation because it has separate telephoto cameras for two different distances. The shorter telephoto is useful when a subject is moderately far away, while the periscope handles a more distant frame. That two-step coverage reduces the awkward gap a single 5x camera can create between the main camera and long reach.

This matters in real scenes. A bird may move from a nearby branch to a distant tree, a sports subject can cross an entire field, and a travel landmark may be too close for a long lens but too far for the main camera. Switching between native telephoto views keeps more of the image optical instead of forcing an early digital crop.

Samsung also promotes higher AI-assisted zoom steps. Use those modes when you need the composition and cannot physically move closer, but inspect the result at full size: fine feathers, hair, leaves and building textures are where processing can look artificial, especially in dim light or haze.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

TechRadar’s 2025 coverage included a useful reminder about the phone’s broader camera system: its reviewer wrote, “I appreciated how some of the photos I took with the 200MP main camera had more detail in them than what I get with the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 50MP main camera.” That observation concerns the main camera, not a controlled telephoto test, but it illustrates why sensor output and processing matter more than a megapixel label alone.

Who should buy it

  • Wildlife photographers who need both moderate and long telephoto views.
  • Sports spectators who cannot control their distance from the action.
  • Travelers photographing architecture, performances and landscapes from changing viewpoints.
  • Anyone who wants the broadest practical native zoom range among the four phones compared here.

What to verify before purchase

Samsung’s specifications and available zoom features can differ by region and firmware. Confirm the exact model sold in your market, the telephoto hardware listed for that version and the current camera software before ordering.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: the computational-zoom alternative

The Pixel 9 Pro XL uses one native long telephoto camera and leans heavily on Google’s computational processing. Super Res Zoom can extend framing to 30x, making it convenient when you need a distant subject quickly and do not want to adjust multiple lenses manually.

That approach works particularly well for static or predictable scenes: a landmark, a sign, a moonrise or a performer who stays in one area. Multi-frame processing can combine slight movements between exposures to improve apparent detail. It cannot eliminate motion blur from a moving subject, nor can it restore information that never reached the sensor.

The coverage gap to understand

Because the Pixel has one native telephoto focal length, the range between its main camera and 5x position has less optical coverage than the Samsung’s dual-telephoto arrangement. The camera app can bridge that interval with cropping and processing, but the result may be softer than using a dedicated lens at the same framing. If your subjects regularly move between near and far distances, this is the most important trade-off.

When Pixel is the better choice

  • You value automatic processing over manual lens selection.
  • You often shoot distant subjects in changing light and want a quick, consistent workflow.
  • You prefer the Pixel camera experience and accept that 30x is computational rather than optical.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra: a specialist still-photography option

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is aimed at photographers who care about specialist hardware and detailed still images. Comparison coverage reports a 4.3x telephoto and impressive capability up to 30x in suitable conditions. Its appeal is strongest when you can hold the phone steady, give the camera enough light and spend time refining composition.

Do not interpret the phone’s high-resolution hardware as an automatic promise of sharper extreme crops. Android Authority’s 2025 comparison emphasizes that detail depends on the complete imaging system. A lower-resolution sensor with a better lens, steadier capture or more effective processing can outperform a higher-resolution module in a difficult scene.

Availability is part of the decision

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s availability and software support vary by market. Check whether the exact model is officially sold where you live, which cellular bands and services are supported, and how long camera software updates are expected to continue. A specialist camera phone is less useful if importing it creates warranty, network or update problems.

Best fit

Choose it when still photography is your priority, you are comfortable evaluating samples rather than relying on a zoom badge, and the phone is officially supported in your region. It is less straightforward as a universal recommendation than the Samsung or Pixel because market access differs.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: choose it for video and Apple workflow

The iPhone 16 Pro Max pairs a 5x tetraprism optical telephoto with Apple’s established video tools and ecosystem integration. It is a strong option for creators who record moving subjects, edit on Apple devices or need dependable video handoff more than the longest possible still-photo reach.

Comparative coverage places its maximum optical and software-assisted zoom range behind the Galaxy S25 Ultra. That does not make the iPhone’s telephoto unusable; it means that a photographer whose first question is “How far can I fill the frame?” will get more headroom from Samsung’s multi-telephoto system.

When the iPhone makes sense

  • Video is as important as still photography.
  • You already use Apple devices and value a continuous capture-to-edit workflow.
  • You generally shoot at or near the native telephoto position rather than relying on extreme digital steps.

Which phone is best for common extreme-zoom subjects?

Wildlife

Start with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Wildlife changes distance and direction, so two native telephoto positions are more useful than one long lens followed by a large crop. Use a fast shutter speed for birds and animals, brace the phone against a railing or monopod, and keep the subject near the center of the focus area. If the animal is in deep shade, reduce the zoom step before raising exposure compensation; a cleaner, slightly wider frame is easier to crop than a noisy, heavily processed one.

The moon

The moon is bright but small, so a long lens and a steady support matter more than a dark landscape around it. Focus on the lunar surface, lower exposure until craters retain texture, and use a timer or remote shutter to avoid tapping the phone. Computational enhancement can make the disc look crisp, but atmospheric haze and movement in the air still limit real detail. Compare several frames rather than judging the first preview.

Sports and concerts

For sports, prioritize shutter speed and stabilization over the highest zoom number. A phone that reaches farther but produces motion-blurred frames is less useful than one that holds a shorter telephoto cleanly. At concerts, stage lighting changes quickly; lock focus on the performer when possible and expect digital steps to show more noise in dark venues.

Travel and architecture

Travel scenes often alternate between medium and long distances. The Galaxy’s two telephoto cameras reduce the need for aggressive cropping, while the Pixel’s processing is convenient for quick signs and landmarks. For buildings across water or valleys, shoot earlier in the day when haze is lower and use several exposures; no phone can computationally recover contrast lost between the camera and a distant subject.

Is 100x zoom actually useful?

A 100x label describes a framing mode, not 100x optical magnification. At that level, the phone normally combines a telephoto image with a very small crop and heavy processing. It can help you identify where a distant object is, read a large nearby sign when conditions are excellent, or record a moment that would otherwise be out of frame. It is rarely the right setting for fine, dependable detail.

Expect quality to fall as distance, haze, low light and subject movement increase. A stable support, bright daylight and a static subject give the software its best chance. For a photograph you intend to print or crop later, use the longest native telephoto position that still gives a clean file, then move closer or crop moderately instead of chasing the biggest multiplier.

How to get the sharpest long-range photos

  1. Use the native telephoto first. Select the phone’s dedicated telephoto position before adding digital magnification. This preserves more real detail and gives the processing system a better starting image.
  2. Stabilize the phone. Hold it with both hands, tuck your elbows in, and rest against a solid surface. For the moon or distant architecture, use a tripod or support and a timer.
  3. Control motion. Choose a faster shutter for wildlife and sports. If the camera offers a moving-subject or action mode, use it before increasing zoom.
  4. Expose for the subject. Bright sky behind a dark subject can trick metering. Tap the subject, then adjust exposure so highlights are not clipped.
  5. Watch the atmosphere. Heat shimmer, humidity, smoke and distance reduce contrast before the image reaches the lens. Change position or shoot at a cooler, clearer time when possible.
  6. Capture several frames. Computational systems often combine multiple images. A short burst increases the chance of one frame with correct focus and minimal movement.
  7. Inspect at full size. A sharp-looking phone preview can hide watercolor-like textures or halos. Check feathers, hair, foliage and straight architectural edges before deciding that a zoom mode is successful.

What matters more than the headline multiplier

  • Native telephoto coverage: Two telephoto cameras cover more intermediate distances than one 5x module.
  • Stabilization: Long focal lengths magnify hand shake. Optical and electronic stabilization can help, but neither freezes a moving subject.
  • Light: Telephoto cameras often receive less light than the main camera. In darkness, the phone may switch lenses, use a crop or apply stronger noise reduction.
  • Focus behavior: A phone must lock focus accurately on a small, distant subject. Birds, insects and performers can move out of the focus area between frames.
  • Atmospheric conditions: Haze and heat shimmer can erase contrast that no amount of sharpening can recreate.
  • Processing style: AI reconstruction may produce an attractive image while inventing or exaggerating texture. Decide whether you prefer a natural, softer file or a more assertive processed look.
  • Firmware: Camera tuning can change with updates, so reviews and samples should identify the software version where possible.

How independent camera scores should be read

PhoneArena’s camera-table scores provide broader context but are not a dedicated extreme-zoom ranking. Its published figures include 158 for the Galaxy S25 Ultra on February 7, 2025, 156 for the Pixel 11 Pro XL on August 20, 2026, and 153 for the vivo X200 Ultra on April 29, 2025. Those scores combine camera characteristics beyond long-range zoom, so they should not override the hardware and use-case differences above.

A practical buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact regional model and telephoto hardware.
  • Check whether the phone has one telephoto camera or separate modules for nearer and farther subjects.
  • Decide whether your priority is still-photo reach, computational convenience, or video workflow.
  • Look at full-resolution samples in the lighting you actually face, not only bright daylight demonstrations.
  • Test moving subjects if you photograph wildlife or sports.
  • Verify software-update support and, for imported models, warranty and network compatibility.
  • Remember that storage, seller, price and stock change over time; confirm those details immediately before purchase.

The practical verdict

Buy the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if extreme zoom is your central requirement and your subjects range from moderately distant to very far away. Choose the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL for a simpler computational-zoom experience, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra for enthusiast still photography where it is officially available, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max when video and Apple workflow outweigh maximum zoom reach. Whatever the phone, treat 30x, 100x and similar figures as framing tools, then judge the camera by the detail it retains in your actual light, distance and subject movement.
