Best call-blocking apps for iPhone and Android: what each one actually does

A needs-based guide to call-blocking apps for iPhone and Android, including native controls, caller ID, screening, voicemail, text filtering, carrier compatibility, privacy and subscription pitfalls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence-backed single winner for both iPhone and Android. Start with the controls already on your phone: Apple’s unknown-caller tools on iPhone, or Google Phone’s call-screening feature where your device and location support it. Add a third-party app when you need a particular combination of caller ID, automatic blocking, screening, voicemail handling, or text filtering.

The practical shortlist is needs-based. Hiya emphasizes caller identification and screening, Truecaller combines identification with configurable blocking, Nomorobo separates broad carrier support from a carrier-limited Max plan, and RoboKiller focuses on answer bots and spam-text tools. None of the available material is an independent, cross-platform test, so vendor percentages and scale claims should be treated as advertisements or company reports, not rankings.

Quick answer: which app should you try?

Use your phone’s built-in controls first, then choose the app whose limitations match your situation:

  • For caller ID plus screening: Hiya’s advertised feature set includes spam identification, call screening, fraud alerts and AI voice/deepfake detection. Some functions are Premium, and individual non-business number identification is listed as Premium and unavailable in Europe.
  • For configurable caller ID and blocking: Truecaller documents automatic blocking, allow/block lists and robocall, telemarketing, scam, fraud and harassment identification. Blocking private or hidden and international numbers is documented as Android-only.
  • For filtering plus voicemail and text features: Nomorobo Basic is listed for iPhone and Android on all carriers; Max is listed for T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T. Plan features include call screening, voicemail transcription, personalized lists and spam-text protection, depending on the tier.
  • For answer bots: RoboKiller advertises call blocking, answer bots and spam-text features. Its App Store listing says a subscription is required after the trial and that the subscription renews automatically unless canceled under the applicable terms.

Think of “blocking” as a range of actions. An app may label a call, silence it, screen the caller, send it to voicemail, or reject it. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and operating-system restrictions mean a blocked call can still leave a voicemail.

CPR V5000 Call Blocker for Landline Phones - You Can Manually Block All Calls with the Big Red Button - Pre-Programmed with 5,000 Known Nuisance Numbers - Caller ID is Required
  • COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
  • IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
  • Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
  • Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

Check the native controls before installing an app

Third-party filters need permissions and correct setup. Built-in controls avoid an extra account and often handle the most common nuisance: calls from numbers you do not recognize.

How to stop unknown callers on iPhone

Apple provides an unknown-caller control in iPhone settings. The exact label can vary with iOS release, so open the Phone settings and look for the option that silences or otherwise manages calls from unknown numbers. Read the explanation before enabling it: calls from people who are not in your contacts can be silenced and routed to voicemail, while calls from known contacts continue to ring.

Use this approach when your priority is quiet rather than perfect identification. Add important numbers to Contacts first, and check voicemail or the recent-calls list for legitimate callers. If you need spam labels, text filtering or a more selective allow/block list, a third-party caller-identification extension may be more suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to screen spam calls on Android

Google’s Phone app includes call screening on supported devices and in supported locations. Google’s documentation makes availability dependent on the device and region, so there is no universal Android menu path. Open the Phone app’s settings and look for Call Screen, spam and call-screening options, then follow the prompts shown for your model.

Some Android phones use a manufacturer’s native calling app rather than Google Phone. In that case, inspect the app’s caller-ID and spam-protection settings. A feature shown in Google’s help pages may not appear on a device using a different dialer.

What to compare in a call-blocking app

Use the following questions instead of treating every “spam blocker” label as the same capability.

Question Why it matters
Does it identify, silence, screen or reject? Identification helps you decide; silencing prevents a ring; screening can interact with the caller; rejection may still end in voicemail because of operating-system limits.
Does it work on your platform, device and carrier? iOS and Android expose different call-management features. Carrier restrictions can determine whether a plan is usable.
Can callers still leave voicemail? Hiya says both iPhone and Android can route blocked calls to voicemail. A separate screening feature may reduce those messages.
Are texts covered? Nomorobo and RoboKiller advertise spam-text functions; many call-only tools do not offer equivalent text filtering.
What is free, and what requires payment? Features, trials and automatic renewal differ by app, platform and location.
What permissions and privacy statements apply? Caller ID and blocking extensions need access that can expose call-related information. A company statement is not an independent privacy audit.

Hiya Spam Blocker

What Hiya advertises

Hiya’s product information lists spam identification, call screening, AI voice/deepfake detection and fraud alerts. Its comparison material shows feature availability across iOS, Android and Pixel, with basic protection free and additional functions assigned to Premium.

Hiya support describes Premium as including automatic scam and nuisance-call blocking, enhanced caller ID, call screening and voicemail protection, along with more frequent iPhone spam updates. The same support material says individual, non-business number identification is a Premium function and is unavailable in Europe. Check the offer shown for your country before relying on that feature.

Its voicemail limitation

Hiya says operating-system restrictions prevent call-management apps from fully disconnecting every blocked caller on both iPhone and Android. A call can therefore be routed to voicemail. Hiya presents Call Screener as a way to answer an unknown call and screen the caller before that person can leave a voicemail.

Who should consider it

Hiya fits readers who value the advertised combination of caller ID, screening and fraud-oriented alerts, especially when a screened interaction is preferable to silently sending every unfamiliar number to voicemail. Verify whether the desired feature is free or Premium, whether it is offered on your platform, and whether regional restrictions apply. The listed AI and scam features are product claims; the available material does not prove that Hiya is more accurate than another app.

Truecaller

Identification and controls

Truecaller says it identifies and can block robocalls, telemarketers, scams, fraud and harassment. Its feature description includes automatic blocking and user-managed allow and block lists, which suits people who want to override a broad database for specific numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android setup

On Android, Truecaller’s instructions use the device’s caller-ID and spam-app selection. Open the system’s default caller-ID or spam-protection setting, choose Truecaller when prompted, and grant only the permissions you understand. The exact wording differs by Android version and manufacturer.

iPhone setup

On iPhone, Truecaller documents a different flow: enable it under Phone settings, in the section for call blocking and identification. If the extension is not enabled, installing the app alone does not give it the same opportunity to label or block calls.

Platform boundary

Truecaller documents blocking hidden or private numbers and international numbers as Android-only. Do not assume those controls will appear on iOS. Compare the permissions and data practices you accept before turning on a caller-identification extension; the feature page is not an independent privacy audit or performance test.

Nomorobo

Basic versus Max

Nomorobo lists a Basic plan at $2.99 per month or $19.99 per year, with a seven-day trial. These prices are volatile and should be checked in the current offer for your location. Nomorobo says Basic supports iPhone and Android across all carriers. Its Max plan is listed for T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, so carrier eligibility should be checked before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan detail Nomorobo Basic Nomorobo Max
Listed price $2.99/month or $19.99/year; verify current offer Current price not stated in the reviewed material
Trial Seven days Trial terms not stated in the reviewed material
Carrier scope All carriers on iPhone and Android, according to Nomorobo T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, according to Nomorobo
Advertised tools Plan-dependent call filtering and related controls Plan-dependent expanded filtering and related controls

The product page lists call screening, voicemail transcription, personalized allow and block lists, and spam-text protection among its features; availability depends on the plan. That combination makes Nomorobo worth considering if voicemail and text handling matter as much as ringing calls.

Privacy statements and scale claims

Nomorobo states that it does not access call logs and does not upload address books to its servers. Treat that as the company’s privacy statement, not as an independently audited guarantee.

Nomorobo reported that it had blocked more than 4.1 billion spam calls and texts and identified 13.8 million known robocallers and SMS senders in 2025. Those are company-reported scale figures, not a comparable measure of blocking accuracy. The company also uses a “100% protection” claim; no independent evidence in the available material verifies that outcome, so it should not be read as a promise that every unwanted call will be stopped.

RoboKiller

Answer bots and text filtering

RoboKiller’s App Store listing describes call blocking, answer bots and spam-text features. An answer bot can interact with a suspected nuisance caller instead of merely labeling the number, which is the central reason to consider this app over a conventional silent filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trial and subscription terms

The listing says the app is free to download, but a subscription is required after the trial. It also says the subscription renews automatically unless canceled under the applicable terms. The reviewed listing does not establish one current price, trial length or identical platform terms for every region and device, so confirm those details in the offer displayed before starting.

RoboKiller’s listing claims that “up to 99% of unwanted calls are eliminated within 7 days of signing up.” That is RoboKiller’s own statement, not an independent cross-platform test. Use the app only if the answer-bot approach is appealing and you are comfortable monitoring renewal settings.

How to set up a third-party filter safely

iPhone checklist

  1. Install the app from the official App Store listing and review its current subscription screen before accepting a trial.
  2. Open iPhone Settings, choose Phone, then open the call-blocking and identification area.
  3. Enable the installed caller-ID or blocking extension. If it remains disabled, the app may not label incoming calls even though it is installed.
  4. Return to the app and configure its allow, block, screening or voicemail options. Add trusted numbers to Contacts or an allow list before enabling aggressive silencing.
  5. Make a test call from a number you control, then check whether the result is a label, a silent call, screening, rejection or voicemail.
  6. Review notification, contact and subscription permissions. Turn off a permission that is not needed for the feature you intend to use, if the app still functions without it.

Android checklist

  1. Install the app and read the permissions and trial terms shown for your device and country.
  2. Open the Phone app or the device’s calling settings and select the caller-ID and spam app or equivalent default-app control.
  3. Choose the installed service when Android asks which app should identify or filter calls. Manufacturer menus use different labels.
  4. Enable the app’s automatic blocking, private-number, international-number or allow/block-list controls only after checking what each switch does.
  5. Place a controlled test call and inspect the call log and voicemail. A call marked as blocked may still create a voicemail item.
  6. Check the subscription page in the app store and disable auto-renewal if you do not intend to continue after a trial.

Why blocked calls still go to voicemail

Blocking is not always the same as disconnecting. Hiya explains that iPhone and Android restrictions can prevent call-management apps from fully terminating a blocked call. The carrier can therefore send it to voicemail even when the app has identified or silenced it.

If voicemail is the problem, look for a screening or voicemail-protection feature rather than a simple block switch. Screening can answer an unknown call and challenge or identify the caller before a message is recorded. You can also adjust the carrier’s voicemail behavior, where the carrier offers that control, but an app cannot guarantee a universal carrier-side rejection.

Privacy, permissions and data choices

Caller-ID apps need enough access to recognize incoming numbers and apply a rule. Depending on the app and platform, that can involve call-management, notification, contact or text permissions. Read the permission prompt in context: a feature that labels incoming calls may need less access than one that scans messages or maintains personalized lists.

Compare the company’s privacy statement with the functions you plan to use. Nomorobo says it does not access call logs or upload address books to its servers; that assertion has not been independently audited here. Truecaller’s feature material explains setup and controls but is not a privacy audit. The same standard applies to every vendor: a stated policy is evidence of what the company says it does, not proof of how an independent auditor would assess its systems.

For a privacy-first setup, begin with the phone’s native unknown-caller or spam-screening controls, then add only the extension that supplies a missing function. Recheck permissions after app updates, because a new text or screening feature may request access that was not needed previously.

Costs, trials and renewal traps

App Documented payment information What to verify before subscribing
Hiya Basic protection is described as free; Premium adds selected functions. Premium price, regional availability, iPhone update frequency and whether individual-number identification is offered in your country.
Truecaller The reviewed feature material does not provide one universal current price. Current plan, platform differences, permissions and renewal terms in your app store.
Nomorobo Basic is listed at $2.99/month or $19.99/year with a seven-day trial. Current regional price, whether your carrier qualifies for Basic or Max, and the features included in the selected tier.
RoboKiller Free download; subscription required after the trial, with automatic renewal unless canceled under applicable terms. Current price, trial length, platform differences and cancellation deadline shown for your account.

Do not treat a trial as free forever. Record the trial end date, check the store’s subscription page, and cancel through the store’s required path if the app is not worth the recurring charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by the nuisance you are trying to solve

You receive many unknown calls but rarely need to answer them

Start with the iPhone unknown-caller control or Android’s native spam and screening options. If you still need labels, add an app with a broad identification database, but accept that silencing can send legitimate callers to voicemail.

Best Value
CPR V100K Call Blocker for Landline Phones - Requires Caller ID | Block Spam, Scam & Robocalls with One Touch - 100,000 Known Nuisance Numbers Preloaded + Block 10,000 More
  • REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
  • 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
  • BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
  • SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
  • IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.

You need to know who is calling before answering

Prioritize caller-ID coverage and an enabled system extension. Hiya and Truecaller both advertise identification; compare their regional and paid-feature boundaries instead of assuming a free installation includes every lookup.

You want a human-like challenge for suspicious callers

Look at screening-oriented features. Hiya describes Call Screener, while RoboKiller advertises answer bots. These approaches interact with callers rather than simply hiding the ring, so review how they affect voicemail and trusted callers.

You want voicemail transcription or spam-text controls

Nomorobo’s listed feature set includes voicemail transcription and spam-text protection, depending on plan. RoboKiller’s listing includes spam-text features. Confirm that the exact tier and platform support the function before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your carrier is T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T

Check Nomorobo Max eligibility because its listed carrier scope is narrower than Basic’s. If you use another carrier, Nomorobo says Basic supports all carriers on iPhone and Android, while Max’s listed support does not extend to every carrier.

A practical decision checklist

  • Write down whether the main problem is ringing calls, voicemail clutter, caller identification, suspicious texts or private-number harassment.
  • Record your phone model, operating-system version and carrier.
  • Turn on the native control that matches your platform before adding an app.
  • For each candidate, identify whether the action is label, silence, screen, reject or voicemail routing.
  • Check iPhone-versus-Android differences; Truecaller’s private, hidden and international blocking is documented as Android-only.
  • Check the carrier boundary; Nomorobo Max is listed for T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, while Basic is listed across carriers.
  • Read the current trial, price and auto-renewal terms in your location.
  • Review permissions and the vendor’s privacy statement, distinguishing stated policy from independent verification.
  • Test with a known number and inspect both the call log and voicemail before relying on the filter.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The product pages and support documents establish feature descriptions, setup requirements, plan boundaries and vendor-reported claims. They do not establish a fair ranking of which app blocks the largest share of unwanted calls. Nomorobo’s 2025 totals describe database and filtering scale, not comparative accuracy. RoboKiller’s “up to 99%” statement is a company claim, and Hiya’s AI and fraud-detection descriptions are advertised capabilities rather than independently measured results.

Prices, trials, regional features, carrier support and operating-system menus can change. Recheck the in-app offer and the platform’s current help page when you install. The most reliable choice is therefore the one that supports your device and carrier, performs the specific action you need, and has permissions and recurring costs you can accept.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
