Which drought-tolerant crops can European farmers grow instead of sorghum?

Proso millet is the clearest directly evidenced summer-cereal alternative to sorghum for some European farms, especially Mediterranean-like, rainfed and low-input systems. Chickpea can provide a grain-legume option in suitable regions, while lupin and several other species may make sense for protein or forage. None is a universal, plug-in replacement: soil, rainfall pattern, crop purpose, sowing and harvest windows, seed supply, rotation and a dependable buyer determine the right choice.

The best decision is therefore a local comparison of crop duration, yield stability, water use, input requirements, harvest reliability and marketability—not a continent-wide ranking.

At a glance: the realistic alternatives

Crop Primary role Where evidence is strongest Important qualification
Proso millet Summer grain cereal Rainfed, low-input Mediterranean-type conditions; a three-year trial in Ravenna province, Emilia-Romagna Results are site- and management-specific; profitability and performance elsewhere still need local validation.
Chickpea Grain legume Drought and heat adaptation reported under agroecological conditions in the Pannonian region It is a different crop purpose from a summer cereal and needs a suitable market and rotation.
Lupin Protein or grain-legume diversification Included in European diversification work Mixture design and harvest reliability can be difficult; do not assume it substitutes for sorghum grain.
Foxtail or pearl millet, teff, annual lucerne, blue lupin, sulla, forage lentil, cowpea, lablab and camelina Forage or catch-crop options Candidate plants studied for dry summer conditions in a Swiss agricultural report published in February 2026 The list is for local evaluation, not a Europe-wide recommendation or proof of grain performance.

The EU CAP Network’s Resilient Summer Crops project examined sorghum and proso millet in the context of rising temperatures, reduced rainfall and differing crop durations. Its conclusion is best read as a framework for matching crops to conditions, not as a single winner.

Why there is no single European replacement

“Drought-tolerant” describes one stress response, not a complete farming system. A crop can survive a dry spell yet fail economically because it matures outside the farm’s harvest window, cannot be combined with available machinery, has unreliable establishment, or lacks a buyer. Stress also differs across Europe: a Mediterranean farm facing a short, hot spring-to-summer transition has a different problem from a Pannonian farm dealing with heat during grain filling or a Swiss farm seeking a dry-season forage catch crop.

European climate-adaptation guidance recommends adapted crops and varieties as a way to manage abiotic stress, while emphasizing that the appropriate choice depends on local conditions. The European Environment Agency’s Climate-ADAPT guidance is useful for framing that decision. A broad 2025 Joint Research Centre review also associates several millets with drought or heat resilience, but it is a neglected-crops overview rather than a prescription for a particular field or region.

Proso millet: the strongest directly supported summer-cereal candidate

What the field evidence shows

A three-year comparison in Ravenna province, Emilia-Romagna, evaluated rainfed proso millet, sorghum and maize under low-input organic management. The authors report that proso millet performed consistently and, under those tested conditions, exceeded maize in the stability of yield and water-use efficiency. They also identify potential for both proso millet and sorghum based on yield, water-use efficiency, disease tolerance and weed competition. The findings appear in the 2024 study, “Millets and sorghum as promising alternatives to maize for enhancing climate change adaptation strategies in the Mediterranean Basin.”

That result matters for farms considering a summer cereal where irrigation is limited and inputs are deliberately restrained. It does not establish that millet will out-yield sorghum everywhere, nor does it demonstrate a guaranteed price or margin. The comparison covered one location, one trial design and three years; soil, rainfall distribution, variety and management can change the ranking.

Adaptability in Mediterranean conditions

A 2022 assessment examined proso millet’s response to drought and low-input field conditions in the Mediterranean Basin, including traits related to water use. It presents the crop as a possible summer-cereal resource for the European Mediterranean. The study, “An Assessment of Proso Millet as an Alternative Summer Cereal Crop in the Mediterranean Basin,” supports testing millet where heat and water scarcity constrain conventional summer cereals, but it is not evidence of uniform performance from Spain to the Balkans or northern Europe.

Questions to answer before planting

  • Can the crop finish on your farm? Compare the local growing season with the variety’s crop duration and the date when autumn weather normally disrupts harvest.
  • Can you establish and harvest it with existing equipment? Confirm drill, combine, cleaning and storage requirements with a local adviser or contractor before ordering seed.
  • Who will buy or use the grain? A feed buyer, processor or on-farm ration must be identified before acreage expands.
  • Is certified, adapted seed available? Check the variety’s regional performance, certification and legal seed-labelling requirements rather than buying an unverified lot.
  • Does it improve the rotation? Consider following-crop timing, volunteers, weed control and disease carry-over, not only drought response.

Chickpea: a grain-legume route, not a cereal substitute

Chickpea addresses a different objective from sorghum: grain-legume diversification, with potential benefits for a rotation that includes cereals. An EU CAP Network project on increasing legumes in diversified cropping systems reports chickpea adaptation to drought and heat under agroecological conditions in the Pannonian region.

That evidence makes chickpea relevant for farms in comparable environments that want a marketable legume rather than another summer cereal. It does not mean chickpea can fill sorghum’s role as forage, silage or feed grain. Buyers, harvest timing, disease management and the farm’s rotation must be assessed separately. A chickpea decision should begin with a regional variety recommendation and a confirmed outlet, then work backward to field selection and expected harvest conditions.

Lupin and other protein crops

Lupin is another diversification and protein-crop possibility. However, mixture design and harvest reliability can be concerns, so it should not be presented as an interchangeable replacement for sorghum. Its value depends on whether the farm is targeting human food, livestock protein, a mixed crop or another end use, and on whether local equipment and buyers can handle it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The choice between chickpea, lupin and a cereal is therefore a purpose decision. A farm seeking a drought-resilient summer grain should compare proso millet with its existing cereal options. A farm seeking rotational diversity or protein may find a legume more appropriate even if its drought behavior and harvest logistics differ.

Forage and catch-crop candidates for dry summers

When the objective is forage rather than grain, the candidate list widens. A February 2026 report from Swiss Agricultural Research, “Alternative Forage Plants as Catch Crops,” lists foxtail millet, pearl millet, teff, annual lucerne, blue lupin, sulla, forage lentil, cowpea, lablab and camelina for study under dry summer conditions.

These plants should be treated as a menu for local trials. Forage value, regrowth, conservation quality, toxicity risks, grazing suitability and harvest date can differ sharply among them. A plant that produces useful biomass as a catch crop may be a poor grain crop, and a grain crop may not provide the forage quality or timing a livestock enterprise needs. Define whether the target is grazing, hay, silage, green manure or a short-season cover before comparing species.

A practical framework for choosing a crop

  1. Define the job. Write down whether you need grain for sale, feed grain, silage, grazing, hay, a catch crop or a protein crop. Eliminate candidates that do not serve that purpose.
  2. Map the stress pattern. Use local records and advisory data to identify when drought and heat occur, how long the rain-free periods last and whether autumn delays harvest.
  3. Screen soil and field history. Check drainage, pH, salinity, compaction, weed pressure and the previous crop. A drought-adapted species still needs a suitable seedbed and rotation position.
  4. Match crop duration to the calendar. Compare sowing opportunity, flowering and grain-filling period, expected harvest date and the next crop’s establishment window. Crop-duration differences are central to the CAP Network summer-crops work.
  5. Compare water and input exposure. Assess rainfed performance, any irrigation requirement, fertility inputs, disease and weed risks, and the cost of failed establishment or a delayed harvest.
  6. Verify seed and machinery. Obtain locally adapted, certified seed where available and confirm that planting, combining, drying, cleaning and storage can be done on the farm or by a contractor.
  7. Secure the outlet. Get written specifications or a realistic on-farm use plan for grain, forage or protein before committing a large area.
  8. Run a measured pilot. Start with a manageable block, keep input and rainfall records, and compare the candidate with the farm’s current crop on harvest date, usable yield, water use, weed and disease pressure, quality and total cost.

How to interpret trial results without overclaiming

Use the Ravenna study as evidence that proso millet can be stable under a particular rainfed, organic, low-input Mediterranean setting—not as a guarantee for a different soil or climate. Record the trial’s management and compare like with like: a rainfed millet plot should not be judged against an irrigated sorghum field without accounting for the water and input difference.

Likewise, a regional adaptation report can identify promising species without proving commercial viability. The chickpea project demonstrates a regional agroecological fit in the Pannonian context; the Swiss forage report identifies candidates for evaluation; the JRC review highlights resilience traits across neglected crops. Each answers a different question, so combine them with local agronomy and market information rather than treating them as one league table.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Replacing sorghum by name alone: Choose according to end use. Proso millet, chickpea and forage legumes are not functionally identical.
  • Confusing drought survival with profitability: Include seed, establishment, drying, cleaning, storage, transport and price risk in the budget.
  • Ignoring harvest reliability: A crop that matures too late for local autumn weather can lose more value than it gains from summer drought tolerance.
  • Scaling before testing: Use a pilot area and preserve a comparable reference strip where practical.
  • Buying seed without adaptation information: Ask for variety, certification, origin, maturity and regional performance data.
  • Assuming forage and grain evidence transfers: Biomass results do not establish grain yield, quality or marketability.

Bottom line for European farms

For a farmer specifically seeking a summer grain to replace or complement sorghum, proso millet currently has the strongest directly relevant European field evidence in the material available—particularly for rainfed, low-input, Mediterranean-like conditions. Chickpea is a credible regional grain-legume alternative where Pannonian conditions, rotation goals and market demand align. Lupin and the Swiss-listed species are better considered for defined protein, forage or catch-crop objectives.

Make the final choice field by field: match the crop to the stress pattern, duration, soil, machinery, seed supply, rotation and buyer, then verify the decision with a local trial.
