If Planet Zoo 2 crashes, reports Failure to Save, or opens without a zoo, use this order: protect the local save folder, verify the Steam installation, check the Windows Saved Games location, and only then investigate Steam Cloud. Steam’s file check can replace damaged installation files, but it cannot rebuild a corrupted zoo save. Keeping an untouched copy of the save folder is the most important recovery precaution.
Frontier documents the local save location as C:Users%username%Saved Games. Steam Cloud may contain another copy of zoo and career data, but cloud conflicts or unsynchronized edits are not guaranteed to be recoverable. The procedure below separates installation repair from save-data recovery so you do not overwrite the only usable copy.

What Steam verification actually fixes
Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command compares the installed Planet Zoo 2 files with Steam’s expected files and downloads replacements when installation data is missing or damaged. It is useful after an interrupted update, a failed download, or a crash that appears to involve the game installation.

Steam can also report that one or more files failed verification. That result is not automatically a failed repair: Steam notes that local configuration files may not be replaced, so they can be reported even when the installation is otherwise correct. Let the process finish before deciding what to do next.
Recognize the symptom before choosing a remedy
Different symptoms point to different layers of the problem. Use the remedy that matches the evidence instead of repeatedly verifying files.
| What you observe | Most relevant layer | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The game will not start, crashes during loading, or an update appears incomplete | Installed game files | Verify the Steam installation, then retry. |
| The game starts, but a zoo cannot load or saving fails | Local user data or a particular save | Back up the Saved Games folder, inspect its location, and test without risking the original. |
| The Saved Games directory is absent | Windows folder location | Use Frontier’s documented restoration procedure for the default location. |
| Two computers show different progress or Steam displays a cloud conflict | Steam Cloud copies | Keep a local backup, compare the available copies, and do not accept a replacement blindly. |
| The game still crashes or refuses to save after these checks | Unresolved game or save issue | Preserve the files and contact Frontier Support with the requested diagnostic details. |
Step 1: Protect every local save before changing anything
Do this before verifying, changing cloud behavior, restoring a folder, or replacing a file. A backup gives you a fixed point to return to if Steam or Windows later changes the active copy.
- Close Planet Zoo 2. If it is frozen, end the game normally when possible rather than repeatedly clicking Save.
- Exit Steam as well. Closing both programs reduces the chance that a background write is still in progress.
- Open File Explorer and select the address bar.
- Enter
shell:SavedGamesand press Enter. This opens the Windows Saved Games location for the signed-in account without requiring you to type the username manually. - Look for the Planet Zoo folder. Frontier’s documented path is
C:Users%username%Saved Games; the folder name may be shown as a game-specific directory inside it. - Copy the entire Planet Zoo directory, not only the newest-looking file, to a separate location. A USB flash drive or another external drive is suitable as a precaution because it is separate from the working folder.
- Leave the original copy untouched. Give the backup a clear name such as
Planet Zoo backup before verificationand note the date so you can distinguish it from later copies.
If File Explorer cannot open shell:SavedGames, do not assume that the saves are gone. Continue to the missing-folder procedure below and keep any files you can locate in another user profile or backup location.

Step 2: Verify the Planet Zoo 2 installation in Steam
Verification is the appropriate first repair for damaged installation files, but perform it after the backup so a later cloud or save decision cannot erase your evidence.
- Restart Steam. A full restart lets Steam refresh its installation state before checking files.
- Open Library.
- Find Planet Zoo 2. If your Steam library uses a different displayed title, select the installed Planet Zoo entry that contains the affected game.
- Right-click the game, or open its gear icon, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files in the Properties window.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan and any download it schedules. Steam says this can take several minutes, depending on the installation.
- When the process ends, close the Properties window and start the game once. Test the behavior that originally failed, but do not overwrite your backup.
A verification result that mentions one or more files could not be validated can be normal when those files are local configuration files. Steam does not necessarily replace such files. If the game still fails to launch, continue with the save-location and support steps rather than repeatedly running the same check.
Step 3: Confirm the Windows save location
Frontier’s support documentation places Planet Zoo save games in C:Users%username%Saved Games. The fastest way to reach that location is the shell:SavedGames shortcut used in the backup step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the folder and Planet Zoo directory are present
Confirm that the files are still present after Steam verification. Do not rename, move, or delete them while diagnosing the problem. If only one zoo fails while others open, record that distinction for support; it helps separate a game-wide installation problem from a save-specific failure.

If Saved Games is missing
Frontier provides a file named Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat for restoring the default Saved Games location. Save that attachment and run it according to Frontier’s directions. After the restoration completes, reopen File Explorer with shell:SavedGames and retry the game.
The restoration procedure addresses a missing Windows folder location. It does not repair the contents of a damaged zoo file. If the folder returns but your earlier files are not inside it, keep the separate backup and do not treat the newly created folder as proof that the old data has been recovered.
Step 4: Handle Steam Cloud as a possible copy, not a guarantee
Frontier states that Planet Zoo supports Steam Cloud Saves for the zoos you build and your career progress. Cloud synchronization can therefore provide another version of your data, but it is not a guaranteed recovery service.
Steam warns that editing the same game on two computers before synchronization can create a conflict. It also says Steam Support generally cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. A cloud copy may be newer, older, or incomplete compared with the local folder currently on your computer.

Before accepting a cloud replacement
- Keep the local backup made in Step 1. If you have not made one, cancel the decision long enough to copy the Saved Games folder.
- Read the conflict information and note which copy is identified as local and which is identified as cloud. Use the displayed dates or sizes as clues, not as proof that one file is healthy.
- Choose a replacement only after deciding which copy you are willing to test. Never delete the local folder to force synchronization.
- Start Planet Zoo 2 and check the specific zoo or career progress that was missing. If the result is worse, close the game and restore the untouched backup rather than continuing to save over it.
Do not assume that a cloud icon means a complete historical archive. Steam Cloud is synchronization, not an unlimited versioned backup. A synchronized corrupt or empty state can be copied just like a healthy state.
Choose the remedy that matches the failure
| Problem | What to do | What the step cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete installation | Use Steam Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. | It cannot reconstruct a damaged user save. |
| Missing Windows Saved Games directory | Use Frontier’s Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat procedure, then check shell:SavedGames. |
It does not recreate zoo data that is absent from every copy. |
| Cloud conflict or different progress on two machines | Back up the local folder, review the local and cloud copies, and select deliberately. | Steam does not promise recovery of lost saves or conflict resolution. |
| Persistent crash or Failure to Save after the checks | Preserve the affected folder and contact Frontier Support. | Repeated verification or random file deletion can remove useful evidence. |
When the game says Failure to Save
Failure to Save means the game could not complete its write operation at that moment; the message alone does not identify whether the cause is an installation fault, a missing save directory, a particular corrupted zoo, or a synchronization issue. Use a controlled sequence instead of repeatedly attempting to save the same state.
- Stop making further edits in the affected zoo and close the game.
- Copy the complete Planet Zoo folder from
shell:SavedGamesto a separate location if you have not already done so. - Verify the Steam installation using the Installed Files procedure.
- Confirm that Windows opens the documented Saved Games location and that the Planet Zoo directory is present.
- If the directory was missing, run Frontier’s restoration procedure and test again.
- If Steam presents a cloud conflict, preserve the local copy before selecting either version.
- Test with the smallest change necessary to determine whether saving now works. Avoid overwriting the only copy of a zoo that still opens.
If every save attempt fails, or if loading the zoo causes a crash, stop testing on the original folder. The untouched backup is more valuable to support than another overwritten attempt.

What not to do during recovery
- Do not delete the Saved Games folder to force Steam Cloud to download something else.
- Do not accept a cloud replacement before making a local copy.
- Do not treat a successful file-verification message as proof that a corrupted zoo has been repaired.
- Do not rename or edit save files while the game or Steam is running.
- Do not repeatedly launch, save, and quit after a failure; each attempt can change timestamps and make it harder to identify the original state.
- Do not report only that the game is broken. Record which zoo fails, whether the game crashes or displays Failure to Save, and which recovery steps were completed.

- The name of the affected zoo or career, if known, and whether other zoos still work.
- Whether Steam verification completed and what result it displayed.
- Whether

- Whether Steam Cloud showed different local and cloud versions.
- Your 17-digit Steam64ID, as requested by Frontier’s PC guidance.
Keep the original save folder and your separate backup until support has finished reviewing the case. Do not send an altered copy when the unmodified files are available; explain which copy is original and which was created for testing.
A safer routine for future saves
Once the zoo is working again, keep a simple manual copy of the Planet Zoo directory before major construction changes, game updates, or experiments with cloud synchronization. The point is not to create a complex backup system; it is to ensure that one failed write does not become the only version you have.
Use distinct dated folders for each manual copy and avoid storing the only backup in the same Windows folder as the active save. If you play on more than one computer, allow synchronization to finish before starting the game elsewhere. When Steam reports a conflict, stop and compare copies instead of selecting an option simply to clear the message.
