Start with Microsoft Edge on a Windows PC with limited RAM. Its Sleeping Tabs, Efficiency mode, and configurable resource controls are specifically designed to reduce inactive-tab memory and background CPU use. Choose Brave if built-in blocking and privacy are more important, Firefox if you need detailed memory diagnostics or a non-Chromium engine, Chrome when maximum site compatibility is the priority, and Opera if its built-in workflow and resource tools suit how you work.
No browser uses the least RAM on every computer. Memory consumption changes with the browser build, Windows version, websites, number of tabs, extensions, display resolution, and power settings. The fairest choice is the browser that stays responsive with your actual workload after its memory controls are enabled.

Quick comparison
The table shows what each browser offers for a low-memory Windows PC. A feature that pauses or deactivates an inactive tab can lower memory use, but it may make that tab reload or take a moment to become interactive when you return to it.

What limited RAM changes in a browser
A browser is a collection of processes rather than one simple program. Windows may have separate processes for tabs, extensions, graphics, audio, network activity, and the browser interface. A single web app can therefore consume more memory than several lightweight pages, while a background extension can continue using resources even when its tab is not visible.
When physical RAM fills, Windows moves less-active data to storage. This paging or swapping is dramatically slower than keeping data in RAM, so the symptoms are usually pauses when switching tabs, delayed typing, fans running constantly, or a whole system that appears frozen. A browser that reports a modest total can still feel slow if one site is continually creating work or if another desktop application is competing for the same memory.
Sleeping, freezing, or deactivating a tab is a trade-off. The browser stops or reduces background work and releases some memory, but returning to the tab can require a reload. Keep exceptions for pages where you need uninterrupted audio, live dashboards, uploads, or real-time collaboration, and accept that an exception consumes more memory.
Microsoft Edge: the best starting point on Windows
Why Edge is the default recommendation
Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Microsoft Edge automatically puts tabs to ‘sleep’ when you’re not using them, freeing up memory and CPU so your active tabs and apps can run smoothly.” Edge can also freeze a sleeping tab, pausing its script timers so the operating system can reuse memory. That combination directly addresses the most common low-RAM pattern: many open tabs, only a few of which are active.
Edge is the most practical first test for a Windows PC because its controls are integrated with the operating system and are aimed at balancing foreground responsiveness against background resource use. An older TalTech-hosted benchmark placed Edge lowest for PC memory under its own hardware and workload. That result is useful historical context, not a promise: hardware, browser builds, websites, and measurement methods have changed.

How to configure Edge
- Open Edge settings and search for Sleeping Tabs. Turn the feature on so inactive tabs can be put to sleep.
- Enable Efficiency mode. It is designed to reduce background CPU activity and can change how aggressively inactive work is handled.
- Open Edge’s resource controls and set a RAM target if your version exposes that option. The Edge Dev Blog warns that Edge tries to stay below the value but may not always do so; treat it as a control objective rather than a hard limit.
- Reproduce your normal workload: the same sites, number of tabs, extensions, screen resolution, and Windows power mode you use every day.
- Watch whether active tabs remain responsive and whether Windows starts paging. A slightly slower tab wake-up can be a worthwhile trade for a machine that otherwise runs out of memory.
When Edge is not the best fit
Edge is not automatically the lowest-memory browser in every workload. A single web application, extension, or media-heavy page can dominate its total, and another browser may behave better with that particular site. If you need a non-Chromium engine or want to investigate exactly which extension is responsible for a leak, Firefox offers more explicit diagnostic tools.
Brave: the privacy-oriented Chromium alternative
What Brave does with inactive tabs
Brave Help states: “To save your computer’s memory and help active tabs run smoothly, Brave deactivates tabs that you aren’t currently using.” Its Memory Saver is therefore useful for a laptop with many tabs open but only a small group in active use. Deactivation can reduce background work, while returning to a tab may require it to reload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow strong is Brave’s memory claim?
In a 2026 post reporting its own 2025 desktop testing, Brave reported an average memory footprint 28% lower than Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, plus 44% less CPU than competing browsers. Those are vendor-reported results from Brave’s workload and methodology, not an independent industry standard or a guarantee for your computer. The figures should be read as evidence that Brave can be efficient under a particular test, not as proof that it wins every site, extension mix, or Windows configuration.
How to configure Brave
- Open Brave settings and search for Memory Saver. Enable it so unused tabs can be deactivated.
- Keep only essential extensions. Built-in blocking can reduce the need for separate content-blocking add-ons, but every extension you install still adds code and possible background work.
- Test privacy-sensitive or media-heavy sites with the same tabs and extensions you use in your current browser. A site that behaves differently under blocking may need an exception, and that exception can change its resource use.
- Check how quickly deactivated tabs return when you click them. If a critical page loses unsaved state, keep that page active or use a site-specific exception where available.
Brave is a strong choice for an old laptop when privacy and built-in blocking matter, but the 28% figure should not be used to predict the exact RAM saving on a 4GB machine.
Mozilla Firefox: the best diagnostic choice
Why choose Firefox
Firefox is the clearest option when the question is not simply “which browser is lightest?” but “what exactly is consuming my memory?” It uses a non-Chromium engine and provides tools for separating browser behavior from an extension, theme, or individual site. The evidence does not support saying that Firefox is always the lightest browser, so choose it for control and diagnosis rather than an assumed universal memory win.

Use Troubleshoot Mode to isolate add-ons
- Open Firefox’s Help menu and start Troubleshoot Mode. This temporarily disables extensions and themes without removing them.
- Repeat the workload that normally causes high memory use. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions and themes one at a time until the culprit is identified.
- Update, remove, or replace the add-on that changes the result. If Troubleshoot Mode does not help, the cause may be a site, a profile, or the broader system rather than an extension.
Use about:memory for detailed inspection
Type about:memory in Firefox’s address bar to open its memory-reporting page. It provides a deeper view than a single total in Windows Task Manager and can help distinguish browser processes, compartments, and other allocations. Use it while reproducing the problem, not only after closing the tabs that triggered it.
Firefox makes the most sense for a technically curious user who wants to find a bad extension or site, values privacy controls, or prefers not to depend on Chromium. For a Windows user who simply wants many inactive tabs to consume less memory automatically, Edge’s Sleeping Tabs are a more direct first experiment.
Google Chrome: the compatibility baseline
Why Chrome still matters on a low-RAM PC
Chrome remains the safest compatibility choice for websites that depend on Chromium behavior or Google account integration. That can outweigh a modest memory difference if a required work or school site is unreliable elsewhere. Chrome’s Memory Saver can reduce activity in inactive tabs, but it does not remove the need to control extensions and tab count.
Configure Chrome for a small-memory system
- Open Chrome settings and search for Memory Saver. Turn it on.
- Remove extensions you do not use. An extension can consume memory even when the tab that installed it is not the page you are viewing.
- Close duplicate windows and archive tabs that you do not need during the current session. Bookmarks, reading lists, or a tab manager can preserve the link without keeping the page live.
- Check the behavior of important sites after inactive tabs are reclaimed. Keep only essential exceptions active, because every exception reduces the potential saving.
TechRadar’s 2026 roundup still characterizes Chrome as hardware-hungry on lower-end hardware even with Memory Saver. That is a current editorial assessment, not a measurement for every PC. Older browser benchmarks should be treated as historical context because browser versions, Windows builds, websites, and test methods change quickly.
Opera: useful controls and a feature-rich workflow
Opera presents itself as an option for low-spec devices and describes built-in tools for managing memory and CPU. That can suit someone who uses workspaces, sidebar tools, or a particular tab-management workflow and wants those features without assembling several extensions.

How to evaluate Opera
- Open Opera’s settings and locate its built-in memory and CPU management controls.
- Enable the controls that reduce background activity, then reproduce your ordinary tab set rather than relying on a clean startup window.
- Measure responsiveness while using your workspaces and sidebar tools. Those features are part of the workload; disabling them only to produce a lower number would not represent your normal use.
No current independent apples-to-apples result establishes Opera as the lowest-RAM choice. Treat its controls as a useful feature of the browser, not as proof that it will beat Edge, Brave, Firefox, or Chrome on your machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare browsers fairly on the same PC
Changing browsers and changing the workload at the same time produces a misleading result. Use a repeatable process instead.
- Record the baseline. Note the exact Windows PC model, installed RAM, Windows power mode, display resolution, and the browser build. Close unrelated applications, then reproduce the slowdown in your current browser.
- Use the same pages. Open the same websites, web apps, videos, documents, and number of tabs in each browser. Keep the same extensions where an equivalent exists, or document the difference.
- Wait for pages to settle. Measure after the pages finish loading and again after leaving the tabs idle. A browser may look expensive during startup but reclaim memory once sleeping or deactivation begins.
- Record more than one number. Windows Task Manager can show total browser memory, but also note tab wake-up time, typing lag, fan noise, paging, and whether audio or uploads stop. A lower total that makes your required site unreliable is not a better result.
- Enable one browser’s controls. Turn on Edge Sleeping Tabs and Efficiency mode, Brave Memory Saver, or Chrome Memory Saver before comparing the configured browser with another configured browser.
- Repeat after a clean profile test. A private window or clean profile can reveal whether extensions and custom settings are responsible. Do not compare a clean profile in one browser with months of accumulated extensions in another.
- Run the test more than once. Web pages change their scripts and advertising, and a browser may restore tabs differently after a restart. Look for a consistent pattern rather than a single winning measurement.
Do not present one benchmark number as a universal answer. The useful result is a configuration that keeps your actual PC responsive under the work you actually do.
Checklist for stopping a browser from consuming all available RAM
- Start with one browser. Keeping several browsers open at once duplicates processes, extensions, caches, and background services.
- Enable the browser’s memory feature. Use Sleeping Tabs and Efficiency mode in Edge, Memory Saver in Brave, or Memory Saver in Chrome.
- Trim extensions. Remove add-ons you no longer use and investigate one that changes memory behavior when disabled. In Firefox, Troubleshoot Mode provides a controlled way to test this.
- Reduce live tabs. Save pages you need later instead of leaving every page running. Dashboards, social feeds, video editors, and online office suites are more likely to remain active than static pages.
- Use a clean-profile test. If the browser is still growing in memory, reproduce the issue without extensions or custom themes before blaming the browser engine.
- Watch for one runaway site. If memory rises only while one page is open, isolate that page and check whether a reload or site update changes the behavior. Do not assume the browser is responsible for every page-level leak.
- Keep critical sessions active deliberately. Sleeping or deactivating a tab can reload it, so do not rely on it for an upload, live audio, unsaved form, or real-time monitoring page.
- Compare after Windows settles. Background updates, antivirus scans, cloud synchronization, and power-saving behavior can change available RAM independently of the browser.
- Restart as a diagnostic, not a cure. If a restart temporarily restores responsiveness but the same workload recreates the problem, continue isolating extensions, sites, and paging rather than treating the restart as a permanent fix.
When browser tuning is not enough
If the computer still pages heavily, freezes, or becomes unusable after sleeping and memory-saving controls are enabled, the limiting factor may be the machine’s physical RAM rather than the browser brand. A compatible RAM upgrade may help, but compatibility must be checked from the exact PC model.

- Identify the computer’s exact model, not merely the processor family or marketing name.
- Confirm the supported DDR generation and the module form factor, such as a laptop SO-DIMM or desktop DIMM.
- Check the maximum supported capacity and how many memory slots are available.
- Verify whether existing modules are replaceable, soldered, or required to operate in a matched configuration.
- Confirm the installed operating system and applications justify the upgrade; adding memory cannot fix a browser extension or a single broken website.
A USB drive is not a substitute for additional physical RAM. If the model cannot be upgraded, reducing simultaneous applications and choosing a browser with effective inactive-tab controls are the practical alternatives.
Best Value
Which browser should you choose?
Choose Edge when you use Windows and keep many tabs open
Edge is the most sensible first installation when you want integrated Sleeping Tabs, Efficiency mode, and a RAM target. It is especially suitable when inactive tabs are the main cause of pressure and broad Windows site compatibility matters.
Choose Brave when privacy and built-in blocking come first
Brave combines Chromium compatibility with Memory Saver and built-in blocking. Its reported 2025 test results are encouraging but vendor-specific, so verify the outcome with your own sites and extensions.
Choose Firefox when you need to diagnose the cause
Firefox is the better investigative tool when you suspect an extension, theme, or site. Troubleshoot Mode and about:memory can show what is happening instead of leaving you with only a total-memory number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Chrome when a required site demands it
Chrome is a reasonable low-RAM choice only when it is configured: enable Memory Saver, limit extensions, and keep inactive tabs under control. Its compatibility advantage can justify its higher resource appetite on a site that does not behave correctly elsewhere.
Choose Opera for its workflow features
Opera is worth testing if workspaces, sidebar tools, and built-in resource management are central to your routine. Judge it by responsiveness under that complete workflow because no current independent test proves it is the universal memory leader.
For a 4GB laptop
Begin with Edge or Brave, enable their inactive-tab controls, and keep the workload modest. If the machine still swaps with only the tabs and applications you genuinely need, investigate a model-compatible RAM upgrade rather than expecting a different browser to overcome a physical memory shortage.
Bottom line
There is no permanent least-RAM browser. On Windows, Edge is the strongest first test because its Sleeping Tabs, Efficiency mode, and resource controls directly target inactive work. Brave is the best alternative when built-in privacy and blocking matter; Firefox is the best diagnostic option; Chrome is the compatibility fallback; and Opera is a feature-focused option. Configure the browser, test the same workload, and treat any benchmark as workload-specific rather than universal.
