For a new project that needs browser testing and flexible automation, evaluate Playwright first. Its documented support for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, plus an integrated test runner and debugging tools, make it a capable starting point. That is a feature-based recommendation—not a claim that it is the fastest or best choice for every team. Selenium, Puppeteer and Cypress may fit better when your browser targets, language or existing infrastructure point elsewhere.
How the main browser automation tools compare
These tools overlap, but they are not interchangeable in every workflow. Choose by the browsers you must test, the language your team uses, and whether you need a test framework, general browser control or distributed execution.

| Tool | Best fit | Important decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Browser tests, scripts and agent-driven workflows across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Official language bindings include TypeScript, Python, .NET and Java. Playwright Test includes auto-waiting, assertions, isolation, tracing and parallel execution. | Its WebKit build is not branded Safari, and Playwright notes platform-dependent differences. If you need actual Safari behavior, confirm that your test environment covers it. |
| Selenium | WebDriver-based automation, especially when language bindings, existing Selenium knowledge, broad browser infrastructure or distributed runs matter. Its uses include web administration as well as testing. | Selenium Grid distributes runs across machines; Selenium IDE provides record-and-playback. Consider the value of that ecosystem against the operational work of maintaining it. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript browser control for Chrome or Firefox, including UI tests, form automation, screenshots, PDFs, performance traces, extension testing and SPA prerendering. | It is a JavaScript library, and its documented browser set does not include WebKit. Headless mode is the default, but it can be configured to run headful. |
| Cypress | Browser testing with Chrome, Firefox and Edge, with WebKit also described in its current browser documentation. | Cypress labels WebKit experimental; it relies on Playwright WebKit and documents known limitations. Cypress also says Electron is deprecated as a test browser and will be removed in a future version. |
This comparison reflects official documentation checked on October 3, 2026. Browser support and experimental status can change, so check the current documentation for the version and environment you plan to use.
Choose based on your browser targets
Start with the browsers your users actually rely on. Chromium coverage alone may be enough for some projects; others need Firefox, WebKit, or a branded browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.

- Need Chromium, Firefox and WebKit in one framework? Playwright documents all three. Its WebKit is not branded Safari, so do not treat that alone as proof of Safari compatibility.
- Need branded Chrome or Edge? Playwright can run branded Chrome and Edge. Selenium’s WebDriver implementations target major browsers; select the browser and driver setup that matches your environment.
- Need Chrome or Firefox with JavaScript control? Puppeteer documents support for both, but not WebKit.
- Considering Cypress for WebKit? Treat it as experimental coverage, not a settled substitute for production Safari testing. Review its current known issues.
For Safari-specific behavior, verify the browser and operating-system coverage available to your team rather than assuming that a WebKit engine build is identical to branded Safari.
Match the tool to your language and workflow
For an integrated test framework
Playwright Test and Cypress emphasize browser-testing workflows. Playwright’s documented features include auto-waiting, web-first assertions, test isolation, traces and parallelism, which can reduce the amount of test-runner and diagnosis plumbing you assemble separately.

For multiple languages
Playwright documents TypeScript, Python, .NET and Java bindings. Selenium also offers language-specific bindings. Confirm that the binding you intend to use fits your team’s runtime and CI setup; a feature is only useful if it fits the project’s actual execution environment.
Compare reliability, debugging and scale
When tests fail intermittently, look beyond whether a tool can launch a browser. Evaluate its waiting behavior, isolation, evidence captured on failure, and the effort needed to reproduce a run.

- Waiting and assertions: Playwright documents auto-waiting and web-first assertions. Puppeteer locator actions wait for elements to be present and ready. Cypress and Selenium have their own execution models; check their current documentation for the behavior relevant to your tests.
- Failure diagnosis: Playwright documents tracing, which can provide debugging artifacts. Compare the evidence each candidate retains—such as traces, screenshots and logs—with the way your team investigates CI failures.
- Parallel execution: Playwright documents parallelism and sharding. Selenium Grid is explicitly designed to distribute runs across multiple machines. These are different operating approaches, so account for infrastructure and maintenance, not only the ability to run tests concurrently.
- Isolation: Playwright documents test isolation. If your suite relies on stateful sessions, shared data or setup between tests, verify how the framework handles those conditions and design the suite accordingly.
The official documentation reviewed for these tools does not establish a neutral, comparable speed ranking. There is no sound basis here to call one the “fastest”; performance depends on the suite, browser, environment and execution setup.
A practical selection process
- Write down required browsers. Include whether you need branded Chrome, Edge or Safari—not just a browser engine—and whether WebKit support can be experimental.
- Identify your runtime. Check whether the language bindings and CI environment fit your team. Playwright documents TypeScript, Python, .NET and Java; Puppeteer is JavaScript-focused; Selenium offers language-specific bindings.
- Classify the work. Decide whether the priority is a test suite, standalone web tasks, agent-driven workflows, or a mix. Selenium explicitly covers administration tasks alongside testing; Puppeteer supports scripting and tests; Playwright documents tests, scripts and agent workflows.
- Run a representative trial. Use a few real flows that exercise your required browsers, waits, test isolation and failure diagnosis. Compare the setup and maintenance your team would own; do not infer general speed from an unrepresentative run.
- Plan how runs will scale. If you need distributed execution, compare Selenium Grid with Playwright’s documented parallelism and sharding in the context of your CI and infrastructure.
When you need screenshots without browser setup
For a workflow whose output is a screenshot or PDF rather than a browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; a GET request with a URL can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and those steps can be turned off individually. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan.
