If you specifically need rewritable DVD-RAM, choose a disc that your exact recorder or drive supports; Panasonic’s documented 4.7 GB single-sided discs are a clear specification match, but the cited models are discontinued and their current stock and condition are not established. DVD-RAM is a legacy format, so check device compatibility before buying and do not treat it as a modern, high-capacity archive solution.
Who should buy blank DVD-RAM discs?
DVD-RAM is a rewritable optical-disc format. It makes sense when you need to write, erase and reuse optical media and have equipment that explicitly supports DVD-RAM writing. It is not the right default choice for everyone seeking storage: the format is legacy, and its capacity is modest by current storage needs.

Sony describes DVD-RAM as theoretically allowing more than 100,000 rewrites per disc. That is a manufacturer’s theoretical statement, not a guarantee of the number of rewrites an individual disc will deliver: Sony’s DVD-RAM support article.

Panasonic DVD-RAM models and their specifications
Panasonic’s archived product specifications provide concrete examples of blank DVD-RAM media. Both cited models are listed in the company’s discontinued-products support area, so their specifications do not establish that they are currently sold or that any available stock is in good condition.

Panasonic documentation also distinguishes 4.7 GB single-sided from 9.4 GB double-sided 12 cm DVD-RAM media. The larger figure is for a double-sided disc, not a single side or a single-sided disc; check that your equipment and handling workflow suit the construction. Panasonic DVD-RAM media documentation
Check compatibility before you buy
Do not assume an optical drive or recorder can write DVD-RAM just because it can read or burn DVDs. Support varies by model. Panasonic’s equipment documentation specifies supported media and warns that recordings may not play on incompatible devices; Philips’ SPD2525BM/00 specifications are an example of a drive that explicitly lists DVD-RAM support. - Find the exact model number of your optical drive or recorder.
- Open that model’s manual or specifications and look for DVD-RAM writing or recording support, not merely DVD playback.
- Check media capacity, side configuration, recording speed and cartridge requirements against the device documentation.
- Confirm that the computer or other host still has a compatible connection and operating environment if you are buying an external or replacement drive.
- If the disc must be read on another device, verify that device’s DVD-RAM playback support as well. A disc recorded in one unit is not guaranteed to play in incompatible equipment.
How to evaluate a listing
Because the Panasonic models are discontinued and present inventory is unverified, judge any listing by the actual media details rather than the brand name or a broad claim such as “DVD.” Confirm that the product explicitly says DVD-RAM, then check:
- Capacity and sides: distinguish 4.7 GB single-sided media from 9.4 GB double-sided media.
- Speed: compare the stated disc speed with the limits in your recorder’s documentation; the archived Panasonic examples are rated 1–3x.
- Disc or cartridge construction: verify whether your device accepts a bare disc or requires a cartridge-compatible type.
- Condition and packaging: for discontinued media, inspect whether the seller identifies it as new, opened or used and whether the packaging protects the discs. The cited manufacturer pages do not establish the condition of marketplace stock.
- Device support: confirm DVD-RAM writing on the exact drive or recorder model before placing an order.
DVD-RAM versus DVD-R
These formats answer different needs. Verbatim describes DVD-R as a 4.7 GB, one-time recording format, while DVD-RAM is rewritable. A recorder that supports one format is not thereby guaranteed to support the other; Verbatim advises owners of older units to check the manufacturer’s recommended DVD format. Is DVD-RAM suitable for long-term archiving?
Do not select DVD-RAM on the assumption that it has a proven fixed lifespan. The NIST/Library of Congress Optical Media Longevity Study, published November 1, 2005, describes testing CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW; DVD-RAM is not named in the abstract, so that study does not establish a DVD-RAM-specific lifespan. NIST/Library of Congress Optical Media Longevity Study
The Library of Congress identifies manufacturing quality, labels or markings, media-device compatibility, initial recording quality, the media’s age when recorded, storage conditions and handling as factors that affect optical-media longevity. For important files, keep additional copies and retain compatible reading hardware rather than relying on one disc or a generic lifespan promise. When another storage approach may fit better
If you do not need DVD-RAM compatibility, choose storage based on the amount of data, how often you need to access it and how you will maintain additional copies. DVD-RAM’s documented capacities—4.7 GB on one side or 9.4 GB on two sides—may not suit a high-capacity archive. No format alone removes the need for compatible hardware and a preservation plan.
