To delete a file you own in My Drive, choose Move to Trash. To recover it, open Trash and choose Restore within 30 days. After that period—or if you empty Trash—the standard process treats the file as permanently deleted. Files you don’t own work differently: Remove takes them out of your Drive but does not delete the owner’s copy.
Delete a file in My Drive
On a computer, open Google Drive, find the file, right-click it, and choose Move to Trash. This applies to files you own. The item goes to Trash rather than being erased immediately, giving you time to restore it.

Files remain in Trash for 30 days, then are deleted forever under Google’s standard instructions. Items in Trash still count toward Drive storage until they are permanently deleted. Google Drive Help: Delete and restore files in Google Drive
Delete a file someone else owns
If you are not the owner, Drive may offer Remove rather than Move to Trash. Remove takes the file out of your Drive; it does not delete the owner’s copy or revoke other people’s access. If the file itself needs to be deleted, ask its owner.

Why ownership changes what you can do
In My Drive, ownership determines whether you can delete the file itself. If you own a file, moving it to Trash does not immediately cut off access for people you shared it with; they can continue to access it until you permanently delete it. If you only have access to someone else’s file, removing it from your Drive does not delete it for the owner or other collaborators.

Drive for desktop adds a device-level consideration: depending on whether files are mirrored or streamed, moving an item to Trash affects it in Drive and on the computer. Google distinguishes this from Google Photos backup behavior, so don’t assume deleting a Drive item also deletes or synchronizes a Google Photos item. If a file is missing or not in Trash
A file that has disappeared from view may have been moved or become inaccessible, rather than deleted. Check in this order:
- Confirm you’re signed in to the Google Account where you used the file.
- Search Drive, then check Trash and the file’s Trashed date.
- If you own the file, inspect its activity panel for recent moves or deletion activity.
- If someone shared it with you, ask the owner to check whether your permissions changed or the file moved to a folder you cannot access.
- If it was in a shared drive, ask the person who granted your access or a shared-drive manager whether your access was removed.
- Search for
is:unorganized. Google says a file can move to My Drive if its original folder is deleted or you lose access to that folder.

Can you recover a file after deleting it forever?
Possibly, but recovery is not guaranteed. Google’s general guidance says a file deleted forever may still be recoverable in some cases, but its standard instructions do not promise restoration for every file or specify a universal eligibility window. If the file matters, try Google’s signed-in recovery or support flow promptly. For Google Workspace or shared-drive data, contact your organization’s administrator or a shared-drive Manager.
