Best Bitrate for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Over 24 Hours

For 4K/60 fps YouTube Live, use 50 Mbps H.264 or 35 Mbps AV1/HEVC, with 20% upload headroom. A 24-hour stream also needs a local archive plan.

For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Those are video bitrates for live ingest, not upload-video settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and at least 20% upload headroom. A 24-hour playlist does not change the published bitrate recommendation, but it does create archive and playback caveats: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.

Recommended bitrate for 4K at 60 fps

Choose the row for the codec your encoder sends to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s published live-stream settings; the pages do not state a publication year, and they are recommendations rather than a guarantee of identical quality for every video or network.

Ingest codec Recommended video bitrate Minimum video bitrate
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps 10 Mbps

Use the recommended rate when your encoder and connection can sustain it. The minimums are lower bounds, not equivalent quality targets. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; your encoder’s ingest settings do not dictate a single playback bitrate for every viewer. YouTube’s live encoder settings distinguish live ingest from its separate guidance for uploaded videos.

How much upload bandwidth to plan for

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload capacity unused. At the recommended 50 Mbps H.264 video rate, that means planning for approximately 60 Mbps of available upload bandwidth just for that stream. This is a planning figure based on the video bitrate and 20% headroom; audio and other simultaneous network use require additional capacity. For AV1 or HEVC at 35 Mbps, the same calculation gives approximately 42 Mbps before accounting for audio or other traffic.

The stream’s total bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. Other users, cloud backups, Wi-Fi interference, or a congested connection can reduce that capacity. YouTube’s advice is to leave room because a connection running at its limit is more vulnerable to interruptions. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its bandwidth guidance.

Encoder settings to use

For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps stream, set the encoder to the codec and recommended bitrate above, then use YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance for the remaining ingest settings.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: 60 fps, if that is the frame rate of the source and encoder output.
  • Transport: RTMPS is recommended for secure transport.

At 4K and 60 fps, YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency. Confirm that your encoder supports the selected codec at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you need. Codec availability and encoder controls vary by software and hardware.

Does a 24-hour playlist need a different bitrate?

No. YouTube’s published bitrate table is organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate, not by stream duration or playlist length. A continuous playlist therefore uses the same recommended ingest bitrate as any other 4K/60 fps live stream using that codec. Duration matters for reliability and replay expectations, not for choosing a different bitrate.

Prepare and monitor a long-running stream

  1. Check the full playback chain before going live. Confirm that the playlist advances as intended and that the encoder sends the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Test representative motion and audio; YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder, and inspect the preview and health indicators before starting the public broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream monitoring guidance.
  3. Keep a local recording if the replay matters. Verify that the local archive file is being written and continues to grow during the run. YouTube recommends a local backup for long streams; an online stream and a local recording are separate safeguards.
  4. Monitor the stream during the run. Check audio and video quality and stream health periodically, and make sure the encoder and connection remain stable. If you use a backup or failover path, test it before relying on it.

Archive and DVR limits beyond 12 hours

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. That is not a guarantee that every stream over 12 hours will fail to archive, but a 24-hour run should not be treated as a dependable full-length replay. Keep a local recording if you need the complete program. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

DVR is a separate viewer feature: YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This does not change the encoder bitrate, but it affects what viewers can replay while the broadcast is live. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Copyright and playlist checks

A bitrate setting does not grant permission to broadcast the material in a playlist. Before scheduling a 24-hour stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the videos and music, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Reusing recordings does not by itself establish permission or guarantee that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization. Resolve rights questions before going live rather than relying on a stream test to identify them.
