Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To shrink a wkhtmltoimage screenshot without making it hard to read, first try JPEG and reduce its --quality value gradually, checking each result at the size people will actually view it. For text-heavy screens, compare PNG with JPEG. If the image includes unused space, reduce the rendered width or crop the captured area—but inspect the output for clipped content. There is no universal quality or width setting that preserves readability on every page.
Choose the right way to reduce the file
Screenshot size can mean either the image’s pixel dimensions or its file size in bytes. These are different levers: cropping or rendering fewer pixels changes the captured area or resolution, while JPEG quality changes compression. Decide which problem you need to solve before adjusting options.

- If the image has unnecessary margins or regions: narrow the capture or crop the image, then confirm all required content remains visible.
- If the dimensions are appropriate but the file is too large: try JPEG and lower
--qualityin small steps. - If crisp text, diagrams, or sharp edges matter most: compare PNG with JPEG at the intended display size. The documentation lists both formats but does not provide a benchmark or guarantee that one will look better in every case.
The documented output formats are JPG, PNG, BMP, and SVG. The --quality option controls JPEG output; it is not a general quality setting for every format.
Try JPEG quality settings and inspect the result
The Ubuntu Noble manpage and Debian’s wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2 source document a --quality range of 0–100 for JPEG. Lower values are worth testing when you need smaller JPEGs, but the number is an encoder setting—not a readability score or a promised file-size reduction.

wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 --quality 85 input.html screenshot.jpg
This is an experiment to start from, not a universal recommendation: 1200 and 85 are example values. Make a few versions with progressively lower quality values, then compare file sizes and inspect small text, thin lines, and edges at the image’s final display size. If artifacts make important details unclear, use a higher quality value or compare PNG instead.
Reduce unnecessary pixels without cutting off content
Set a rendering width
--width sets the rendering screen width, but it is a guide by default. If you need the specified width enforced, test --disable-smart-width. A strict width can leave page content outside the captured area, so inspect the entire screenshot for overflow or clipping before using it.
Crop to the relevant area
Crop width, crop height, and crop coordinates can bound the captured region. Cropping can remove whitespace or unrelated page sections without compressing the remaining pixels, but it also permanently excludes what falls outside the selected area. Check the top, bottom, and sides for content that may have been cut off.

Use zoom only to get the desired composition
A zoom factor is available, but the documentation does not identify a generally optimal setting for smaller files. Changing zoom affects the rendered scale and composition; check both legibility and the full capture after changing it rather than treating zoom as a guaranteed compression control.
Wait for dynamic pages to reach the right state
The library settings document a JavaScript delay after page load. Adjust it to match the page’s actual behavior when content appears after load. This setting determines whether the desired state is captured; it is not documented as a way to reduce compression or file size.
Compare candidates before choosing a setting
Use representative pages from your actual workload: a text-heavy screen, any page with fine lines or diagrams, and pages with dynamic content if those are part of the job. For each candidate, record its output byte size and check the following at the intended display size:

Troubleshoot common results
The JPEG is smaller, but text looks rough
Raise --quality and compare again, or test PNG for text-heavy content. Judge at the actual display size; a screenshot intended to be enlarged needs to retain more detail than one shown small.
The output is still too large
Check whether the screenshot contains margins or page regions you do not need, then adjust width or crop settings and verify that no content is clipped. If the dimensions are necessary, compare JPEG quality settings rather than assuming a narrower capture is safe.

Content disappears at the chosen width
--width is a guide by default, while --disable-smart-width makes the requested width strict. Test without strict width or choose a width that accommodates the page, then inspect the output for overflow.
The screenshot misses content that appears later
Set an appropriate JavaScript delay based on how the page loads and capture again. A delay can affect the captured page state, but should not be mistaken for a file-size optimization.

If your goal is to capture a page rather than specifically to configure wkhtmltoimage, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a JPEG example, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before the shot, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a lower --quality value make PNG files smaller?
No. The documented --quality control applies to JPEG output, not PNG.
Is --width a guaranteed limit on the screenshot width?
Not by default. It is a guide unless you use --disable-smart-width, which can leave content outside the strict width.
