1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes—a beginner telescope can show Saturn’s rings. Celestron specifically says its 114AZ-SR can view them, though the amount of detail you see depends on the observing conditions and setup. For a first telescope, compare the whole instrument: aperture, mount, included finder and eyepieces, and whether you can comfortably carry, store, and operate it.
What matters most when choosing a telescope for planets?
Aperture: the size of the telescope’s opening
Aperture is the diameter of the telescope’s main lens or mirror. The models compared here range from 70 mm to 8 inches, so they are not equivalent in light-gathering capacity or physical scale. A larger aperture can help reveal finer detail, but aperture alone cannot promise a particular view of Saturn or another planet.

Sky & Telescope’s December 2005 review proposed at least 70 mm as a criterion for the sub-$200 beginner telescopes it considered. That is dated editorial guidance for that market, not a universal modern minimum or a current comparison of the telescopes below. Its review also describes bench and field testing of the samples it evaluated; those historical results do not establish how the current models perform.
Mount: how you point and follow a planet
An alt-azimuth mount moves up and down and left and right. It is intuitive for point-and-look observing, but a manual mount needs small adjustments to keep a planet in view as Earth’s rotation carries it across the sky. Dobsonian telescopes use a simple manual rocker-box base; they also require the observer to follow the object by hand.

- Satisfaction: Buy with confidence from a leading manufacturer.
Sky & Telescope’s 2005 starter review favored an alt-azimuth mount for beginners, while noting that equatorial mounts have benefits. Treat that as historical advice, not a rule that makes one mount best for every first-time observer. Consider whether you prefer a compact tripod setup or can manage a larger telescope and its base.
Eyepieces and finder: check what comes in the box
A complete first telescope should include the parts needed to locate and observe objects. Sky & Telescope’s December 2005 review put it plainly: “A good first telescope comes complete with mount, eyepieces, and finder.” Before buying, confirm the current product listing specifies those items and the eyepiece sizes they accept.

More accessories do not automatically make a kit better. For example, the PowerSeeker 70AZ includes a 3x Barlow lens, while Celestron says the 114AZ-SR does not include one. A Barlow is not a prerequisite for planetary observing, and combining optics for high magnification does not ensure a sharper view. Check compatibility with the chosen telescope’s focuser and accessory standard before adding eyepieces or other accessories.

| Model | Aperture and optical design | Mount and included items | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celestron 114AZ-SR | 114 mm Newtonian reflector; 600 mm focal length | Manual alt-azimuth mount; 26 mm eyepiece at listed 23x and 9.7 mm eyepiece at listed 62x | Compact reflector kit with straightforward manual pointing. Celestron says it can show Saturn’s rings. Its listed magnifications are specifications, not promises that conditions will support a particular view. |
| Sky-Watcher Classic 150P Dobsonian | 150 mm parabolic reflector | Manual Dobsonian rocker-box base; supplied eyepieces and finder; supports 1.25-inch and 2-inch accessories | Larger stated aperture than the 114AZ-SR, but the telescope and base need more room for storage and transport. Sky-Watcher USA states 94% mirror reflectivity; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparative result. |
| Sky-Watcher Classic 200P Dobsonian | 8-inch parabolic reflector | Manual Dobsonian rocker-box base; supplied eyepieces and finder; supports 1.25-inch and 2-inch accessories | Largest stated aperture in this comparison. Check whether its physical size, handling, and storage needs suit your home and observing location. Sky-Watcher USA’s “816 times brighter than the human eye” wording is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement here. |
| Celestron PowerSeeker 70AZ | 70 mm refractor | Manual alt-azimuth mount; includes 20 mm and 4 mm eyepieces and a 3x Barlow lens | A smaller-aperture, compact-class option. Celestron describes it for viewing planets and the Moon. Do not assume that using the included high-magnification combination will be useful in all observing conditions. |
How to choose among these options
Choose the 114AZ-SR if a compact reflector kit suits you
The Celestron 114AZ-SR combines a 114 mm aperture and manual alt-azimuth mount with two eyepieces. Its product page explicitly says it can view Saturn’s rings. The listed 23x and 62x values correspond to the supplied eyepieces; the page also lists a “highest useful magnification,” but that specification cannot guarantee what the atmosphere or observing conditions will support on a given night.
Choose a Dobsonian if you can accommodate a larger telescope
The Classic 150P and 200P provide larger stated apertures than the compact-class options here, with manual rocker-box bases and supplied finder and eyepieces. Sky-Watcher Australia’s 2023 brochure describes a 150 mm instrument as allowing observations of Saturn’s rings and planetary details. That is manufacturer guidance, not a promise of a particular amount of detail for every observer. Allow for the base as well as the optical tube when judging storage and transport.

Choose the 70AZ only with realistic expectations about its aperture
The PowerSeeker 70AZ is the smallest-aperture telescope in this comparison. Its included eyepieces and Barlow make the kit look accessory-rich, but the 70 mm aperture remains the relevant optical specification when comparing it with larger instruments. If you are considering it primarily for planets, weigh that difference against its size and the complete kit contents.
What can you expect to see on Saturn?
Celestron says the 114AZ-SR “can view the rings around Saturn,” along with lunar craters, star clusters, and brighter deep-sky objects. Sky-Watcher Australia’s 2023 brochure says a 150 mm instrument permits observations of Saturn’s rings and planetary details. These are manufacturer descriptions of intended use, not guarantees of the apparent size, color, or fine detail you will see.

That finding applies to the review’s historical sample instruments and observing conditions; it is not a current test of the models compared here.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Check the current listing for the telescope, mount, finder, and eyepieces actually included.
- Consider the full setup’s storage and transport needs, including the tripod or Dobsonian base.
- Decide whether you are comfortable manually nudging a telescope to keep a planet in view.
- Check the telescope’s accessory compatibility before buying extra eyepieces or a Barlow.
