Use Apple’s Move to iOS transfer during the iPhone’s initial setup. It can move many common categories—including contacts, messages, photos, calendars, and WhatsApp content—but music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. Keep both phones powered and nearby, and don’t erase the Android until you have checked the iPhone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and connect them to power. Turn on Wi-Fi, and make sure the iPhone has enough available storage for the content you plan to transfer, including anything on an Android microSD card.
- If you want Chrome bookmarks to transfer, update Chrome on Android first.
- A cable is optional. Apple supports a direct USB-C connection as a faster option, while Google describes a USB-C cable as more reliable than Wi-Fi. Use a compatible USB-C data transfer cable only if both phones support a data connection; wireless transfer is also available. Neither source publishes a universal speed figure. Transfer during iPhone setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup. At Quick Start, tap Set Up Without Another Apple Device, then continue until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose From Android, then Transfer with App.
- On Android, open the Move to iOS app and follow its prompts and permission requests. On the iPhone, continue until a six- or ten-digit code appears.
- Enter the code on Android and join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone. Apple says an Android warning that the internet connection is weak can be ignored during this step.
- Choose the content to transfer on Android and start the move. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power. Leave Move to iOS open on Android, and don’t switch apps or take a call while the transfer is running.
- Wait until the progress bar on the iPhone finishes, even if Android appears to have completed its part. Transfer time depends on how much content you selected; Apple does not give a fixed duration.
- Finish setting up the iPhone. A phone number and SIM or eSIM may activate during the move; carrier follow-up may be needed, depending on your device and carrier.

What transfers—and what you may need to move yourself
Apple lists these categories for Move to iOS: contacts, message history and SMS messages, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars.

Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature. After the move, download matched free apps from the App Store. Don’t assume that Android apps or their app-specific data will arrive exactly as they were; sign in and check each important app.

Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. Apple’s instructions do not promise that every app, account, or piece of app data will migrate. If you prefer Google Photos or Google Calendar, Google says you can leave Apple Photos or Calendar unchecked during selection and use the Google services after signing in. That choice does not guarantee migration of app-specific state. Details are in Google’s transfer guide.
If iPhone setup is already complete
Move to iOS is a setup-time transfer. To use it after completing iPhone setup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start setup again. If you don’t want to erase it, transfer content manually instead. Before erasing, make sure anything already on the iPhone is backed up or otherwise safe.

Is there a transfer option without the app?
Apple documents a no-app setup route for certain compatible devices: its page specifies a supported Android device running a compatible version of Android 17, and illustrates steps for iOS 26.5. The Android manufacturer must support data transfer and eSIM for this route. During setup, choose From Android, then Transfer without App; bring the phones close, scan the iPhone’s QR code with Android, and follow the prompts. If scanning fails, Apple describes entering a session ID and pairing code through Google Services on Android.
This option is model- and version-dependent, not a universal replacement for Move to iOS. Unless your device maker confirms compatibility, use the standard app flow. Check Apple’s current compatibility and setup instructions for your devices.

Check the transfer before erasing Android
Keep the old phone available until you have confirmed that the information and account access you need are present on the iPhone. In particular, check contacts in Contacts or Phone—including names, numbers, and email addresses—and open Messages to review recent text threads and group chats. Also open the apps and files that matter to you; a category appearing in Apple’s transfer list does not guarantee every item or app state is intact.
Back up the Android phone before resetting it. Google advises removing Google accounts from the old phone before a factory reset; menu names can vary by manufacturer. Its guides cover confirming that data transferred and resetting an old Android device.

If Move to iOS stalls or content is missing
- Keep Move to iOS on screen on Android, and avoid using other apps or answering calls until the iPhone’s progress bar finishes.
- Turn off Android apps or settings that interfere with Wi-Fi. Apple also suggests forgetting known Wi-Fi networks, restarting both phones, and turning off cellular data before trying again.
- If only some content arrived or the iPhone appears full, check its available storage. Apple says you may need to erase the iPhone and repeat the transfer with a selection that fits.
