Reserve 25–35 W for games that genuinely need it or for plugged-in play.
Those figures are starting points, not guarantees. Runtime changes with the game engine, frame-rate target, OLED brightness, thermals, Windows activity and network conditions. Tune one game at a time and save the result to that title’s profile.

Recommended battery profile at a glance
| Setting | Battery-first starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Armoury Crate profile | Default Game Profiles enabled for supported games | Use a manual profile when a title is not covered or its target does not feel right. |
| Power limit | 17–20 W for demanding games | Move toward 25 W or higher only when frame rate or settings require it; allow peaks up to 30 W when needed. |
| Frame-rate cap | 30 FPS for demanding AAA games; 60 FPS for lighter games | Raise the cap only when the game benefits enough to justify the extra rendering work. |
| Shared VRAM | About 8 GB | Increase it only for a game that clearly benefits; larger allocations can consume power with diminishing returns. |
| Display | Use the lowest comfortable brightness and refresh rate | Return to 120 Hz or higher brightness when smoothness or visibility matters more than endurance. |
| Software | Keep Windows 11, Armoury Crate SE and the Xbox PC app current | Update before troubleshooting profiles or missing controls. |
| Charging while travelling | Travel Mode enabled for aircraft or train outlets | Leave it off when you need the fastest possible charging from a high-capacity outlet. |
The X20 has an 80 Wh battery and a 7.4-inch 1,920×1,080, 120 Hz OLED display. No published X20 test establishes a fixed number of watts saved by a particular brightness or refresh-rate change, so treat display adjustments as sensible power reductions rather than guaranteed percentages.
Start with Default Game Profiles
What the automatic profile does
Xbox’s Default Game Profiles are designed to apply a recommended TDP and FPS target on a supported game-by-game basis. When the game renders above that target, the profile can limit the frame rate instead of allowing the system to spend power producing frames you will not use. This is generally a better first step than forcing one wattage across every title because a lightweight indie game and a demanding 3D release have very different requirements.

How to enable it
- Open the Command Center Game Bar widget on the Ally X20.
- Find the Default Game Profiles control and turn it on.
- Launch a supported game and confirm that its profile is active.
- Play for several minutes, checking frame pacing, image quality and fan noise before making manual changes.
Profile coverage and the visible labels can change with Xbox, Windows and Armoury Crate updates. If the toggle or a game target is missing, update the software and use the manual method below.
Choose a manual wattage that matches the game
Why 17–20 W is the useful battery baseline
For a demanding game away from a charger, begin around 17–20 W. A PC Gamer review measured almost three hours in PCMark 10 gaming at 17 W and recommended a custom mode near 20 W with peaks up to 30 W. Those are review measurements under specific test conditions, not a promise for every X20 owner; brightness, frame rate, thermals and Windows activity all change the result.
At this range, the GPU receives enough sustained power for many handheld settings while avoiding the steep battery draw of the highest modes. If the frame rate is unstable, increase the limit in small steps. If the game is already meeting its cap, reduce the limit until performance begins to fall, then move one step back up.
When to use 25–35 W
Use 25 W or more when a title cannot maintain its target at 17–20 W, when you are connected to a suitable USB-C charger, or when you deliberately prefer higher settings to longer runtime. The X20 review covered operating modes from 17 W through 35 W. Higher limits increase heat, fan noise and battery drain, so they are poor defaults for every game.

Windows Central lists 13 W Silent, 17 W Performance, 25 W Turbo and 30 W Turbo+ for the 2025 Ally X family. X20 owners should verify the labels and wattages shown by their installed Armoury Crate version instead of assuming those names are identical on every firmware release.
Save the adjustment to the game
- Open Armoury Crate SE and select the game from the library.
- Open that title’s performance or operating-mode controls.
- Set a starting limit of 17–20 W on battery, increasing only if the game misses its target.
- If the interface offers a peak or boost limit, keep peaks to about 30 W for demanding games unless you are plugged in.
- Save the settings to the game profile. ASUS says X20 users can store wattage and power-limit changes directly in a title’s profile with a single action.
Make separate profiles for battery and plugged-in play when your Armoury Crate version allows it. A setting that is sensible at a wall outlet is not automatically sensible from an 80 Wh battery.
Cap frame rate before raising power
Use a target the game can hold
A frame-rate cap prevents the system from rendering more frames than the display or your preferences require. Set 30 FPS for a demanding AAA game when consistency matters more than maximum smoothness. Use 60 FPS for a lighter game that can sustain it without a large power increase. These are practical targets, not universal ASUS presets.
- Open the game’s graphics, display or performance menu.
- Set the frame-rate limit to 30 FPS for a demanding title or 60 FPS for a lighter title.
- If the game exposes an Armoury Crate or Xbox profile target, keep the two limits aligned.
- Play an area that normally stresses the system. If the target is stable, lower wattage one step and test again.
Xbox describes the saving mechanism clearly: when performance is above the target, the game profile is intended to limit FPS at that rate. A cap does not make a game faster; it removes unnecessary rendering work and can reduce heat and fan activity.

Do not chase a higher cap by default
Unlocking the frame rate can feel smoother on a 120 Hz OLED, but it also asks the GPU to render continuously. If you are travelling, decide whether the extra smoothness is worth the shorter session before raising the cap. For turn-based, strategy or narrative games, a lower stable target is often a better battery trade than a fluctuating high one.
Set shared VRAM conservatively
Why about 8 GB is a sensible starting point
PC Gamer lists 8 GB of adjustable shared VRAM for the X20, and Windows Central cautions that pushing the allocation higher can consume power with diminishing returns. Leave the allocation near 8 GB for most games. Increase it only when a specific title reports a clear texture-memory limitation, severe stutter caused by memory pressure, or a setting that cannot be enabled otherwise.
Test a change instead of assuming more is better
- Record the game’s current frame rate, texture setting and wattage.
- Change the shared-VRAM allocation in the Armoury Crate GPU-memory control.
- Restart the game if it does not detect the new allocation immediately.
- Compare the same demanding scene at the same FPS cap.
- Keep the larger allocation only when it removes a real limitation without an unacceptable increase in power use.
More reserved memory does not create extra GPU performance by itself. It can also reduce the memory available to Windows, so a larger value is not a universal upgrade.

Reduce OLED power use without ruining visibility
Brightness
The X20’s OLED panel is bright and high contrast, but brightness is a direct part of display power use. Lower it indoors, on trains or in shaded rooms, and raise it only when reflections or sunlight make the image difficult to read. Because the available reviews do not publish a measured X20 wattage saving for each brightness level, choose the lowest setting that remains comfortable rather than expecting a fixed percentage.

Refresh rate
A 120 Hz panel can refresh more often than a 30 or 60 FPS game needs. Where Windows and the current Armoury Crate firmware expose a refresh-rate selector, try a lower setting for slower games and menus, then return to 120 Hz for fast games where motion clarity matters.
- Open Windows Settings and go to System and then Display.
- Open Advanced display and choose the available refresh-rate option.
- Apply the lower rate, launch the game and check for flicker, judder or a changed frame-time feel.
- Save the setting per game only if your software version supports per-game display profiles; otherwise change it manually when travelling.
Do not trade away visibility or motion comfort for a small, unquantified saving. Display changes work best alongside a frame cap and a sensible wattage limit.
Keep Windows and the gaming software current
Xbox ties Default Game Profiles and related improvements to current software updates. Keep Windows 11, Armoury Crate SE and the Xbox PC app updated before diagnosing a missing profile, an incorrect wattage label or a frame-rate target that does not apply.

Use cloud gaming when the connection is reliable
Xbox Cloud Gaming can move game rendering away from the Ally X20, reducing local GPU work. Xbox documents unlimited Cloud Gaming with Game Pass Premium in select markets. Availability, catalogue and subscription eligibility vary by region and can change, and a weak connection may create more frustration than a lower local-power setting.
When cloud gaming helps
- You have a stable, low-latency Wi-Fi or mobile connection.
- The game is much more demanding than the X20’s battery profile can comfortably sustain.
- You are willing to trade local rendering control for longer unplugged sessions.
When local play is better
- You are offline or travelling through areas with inconsistent service.
- Input latency matters, such as in competitive games.
- The title is already lightweight and runs efficiently at a capped frame rate.
Turn on Travel Mode for limited outlets
ASUS Travel Mode limits charging power to 65 W automatically when Airplane Mode is enabled, or you can turn it on manually from the interface. Use it on aircraft and train outlets that cannot reliably provide a high-power charge. The feature is intended to prevent the handheld from demanding more than the outlet can supply while you play or charge.
- Enable Airplane Mode; Travel Mode should activate automatically according to ASUS.
- Alternatively, open the Travel Mode control and switch it on manually.
- Use a suitable USB-C power adapter and monitor whether the battery is charging, holding or slowly discharging during play.
- Turn Travel Mode off when you return to a dependable high-power outlet and need the fastest charge.
Travel Mode does not increase battery capacity. It manages the power available from the outlet, so a demanding game can still consume energy while the system is connected.

| Measurement | Condition and qualification |
|---|---|
| 80 Wh | Battery capacity listed for the X20 in the 2026 PC Gamer review. |
| Almost 3 hours | PCMark 10 gaming measurement at 17 W in that review. |
| 2 hours 9 minutes | PCMark 10 gaming measurement at 25 W in the same review. |
| 149 minutes | Another PCMark 10 result at 25 W reported by PC Gamer; it is the same type of controlled test, not a universal runtime guarantee. |
| Up to 9 hours | One reviewer’s day-to-day observation while playing indie games, not a standardized laboratory result. |
The results illustrate the central trade-off: raising wattage can improve frame rate but shortens runtime, while lightweight games can last far longer than demanding 3D titles. Your brightness, refresh rate, FPS cap, thermals and Windows state will move the result in either direction.
A repeatable per-game tuning workflow
- Start automatically. Enable Default Game Profiles and launch the title once.
- Choose the target. Select 30 FPS for a demanding game or 60 FPS for a lighter one.
- Set power. Begin at 17–20 W on battery.
- Check the stressful scene. Use the area where the game normally produces its lowest frame rate, not an empty menu.
- Adjust in small steps. Increase wattage only when the target is missed; decrease it when the cap is held comfortably.
- Check memory. Leave shared VRAM near 8 GB unless the title demonstrates a genuine memory limit.
- Trim the display. Lower brightness and, if acceptable, refresh rate.
- Save the profile. Store the working wattage, power limit and game options so the settings return automatically.
- Retest after updates. Revisit the profile after Windows, firmware or Armoury Crate changes.
Troubleshooting common battery problems
The battery drains quickly even at 17–20 W
- Confirm that the profile is actually active and that the game is not overriding its frame cap.
- Check whether the display is at maximum brightness and 120 Hz.
- Look for a background update or launcher process in Windows before blaming the game profile.
- Test the same save point with a 30 FPS cap and compare the result.
The game stutters after lowering wattage
- Raise the limit gradually toward 20 W, then higher only if necessary.
- Keep the frame cap at a level the system can sustain instead of allowing uncapped spikes.
- Return shared VRAM to about 8 GB if a larger allocation reduced available system memory.
A profile or wattage option is missing
- Update Windows 11, Armoury Crate SE and the Xbox PC app.
- Restart the Ally X20 and reopen the Command Center Game Bar widget.
- Check the current Armoury Crate labels rather than copying a mode name from another Ally generation.
- Use a manual game profile if the title is not covered by Default Game Profiles.
The handheld charges slowly during a journey
- Enable Travel Mode for an aircraft or train outlet.
- Check whether Airplane Mode activated it automatically.
- Remember that a demanding game can still consume some of the available 65 W while you play.
Best settings by game type
| Game type | Battery profile to try | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Demanding AAA game | 17–20 W, 30 FPS cap, roughly 8 GB shared VRAM | Prioritizes a stable target and avoids rendering excess frames. |
| Competitive action game | Use the lowest wattage that holds your required frame rate; consider 60 FPS or higher only when the extra responsiveness matters | Responsiveness may justify more power, but an uncapped frame rate should not be automatic. |
| Indie or 2D game | Use a lower-power mode if the game remains stable; 60 FPS is often sufficient | Light titles generally do not need the same TDP as a demanding 3D release. |
| Cloud-streamed game | Use the local power limit that keeps the stream responsive and reduce display brightness | Cloud rendering reduces local GPU work, but network quality becomes the limiting factor. |
These categories are decision guides, not fixed ASUS presets. The correct setting is the lowest one that maintains the experience you want in the specific game.
