Install one foundation at a time, keep a backup of the configuration files, and treat Steam Deck as a separate installation path.

Arkham City Redux: the graphics foundation
Arkham City Redux is the strongest all-round visual recommendation because it is not merely a shader preset. Its Nexus listing describes an Arkham City HD Texture Pack and Advanced Launcher with full support for DirectX 11 and Steam achievements. The 4.9GB download is substantial, but it gives the install a coherent high-resolution texture baseline instead of asking you to assemble dozens of unrelated replacements.

Who should install it
Choose Redux if your priority is a visibly cleaner game while keeping the original campaign structure. It is also the sensible first install for a new modded setup because its launcher reduces manual configuration. The texture pack is not a small test download, so check free disk space before starting and allow extra room for the archive and temporary extraction files.
What it does not prove
A larger texture pack does not guarantee a higher frame rate. Texture memory use, storage speed, GPU memory and your chosen shadow, tessellation and anti-aliasing settings determine whether the result is smooth. The available evidence does not provide a universal FPS cost or a hardware threshold; test your own save after installation.
Advanced Launcher: the quality-of-life layer
The Batman Arkham City Advanced Launcher is described as a replacement application for the original Batman: Arkham City BmLauncher. Its practical value is reducing the number of edits you have to make by hand. It adds configuration options, supports high-resolution texture packs and automatically handles ReadOnly file properties that otherwise cause confusing failures.
Controls worth using
- Higher graphics tiers: expose quality levels beyond the normal launcher’s choices.
- Tessellation and shadow controls: let you trade geometry and shadow quality against GPU load instead of accepting a fixed preset.
- Startup-movie toggles: skip introductory movies when you want to reach the menu faster.
- Color settings and HDR profiles: provide alternate presentation options for different displays and preferences.
- Customizable FOV hotkeys: make field-of-view changes available in play rather than forcing a permanent file edit.
- Catwoman Quickfire Disarm keybind: gives a dedicated input option for that move.

The launcher is a good choice even if you decide not to install the full Redux texture pack. It improves the configuration experience, but it is still a replacement executable: make sure you are using the release intended for your game edition and keep the original files available until you have confirmed that the new launcher starts the game.

Arkham City Community Patch

Because it adds and restores game content, treat it as a separate branch of your setup. Read its release notes for the exact version you download, launch the game once, and verify menus, story progression and challenge maps before combining it with another content-changing mod. The listing’s 3.3k endorsement/download indicator is a sign of interest, not a guarantee that every combination works.
Faster Gliding and Special Combo Gadgets
This 42.6MB gameplay mod is the focused modernization choice. It brings Arkham Knight-style traversal to Arkham City and optionally adds special-power gadgets. It changes the feel of movement and combat without asking you to adopt a complete overhaul.

Ascension Overhaul – Insane Difficulty
Ascension Overhaul is described as “Arkham City’s biggest gameplay overhaul. A new experience.” That description is the important warning: it is not a minor difficulty slider. Expect a substantially different and harder run, and install it only after you have completed the original game or are intentionally looking for a challenge route.
Do not use Ascension as the first test of a new graphics setup. Establish that the unmodified game, launcher and texture foundation work first, then create a separate profile or backup before changing combat and progression systems.

Return To Arkham Graphics
Return To Arkham Graphics is a ReShade preset attempting to emulate the look of the Return to Arkham release. It is the lightweight visual alternative to Redux: color grading and post-processing rather than a 4.9GB texture installation.
Pick it when you want to experiment with atmosphere, contrast and color without replacing a large texture set. Since ReShade presets can interact with HDR and driver-level filters, test one presentation layer at a time and avoid stacking several color-correction tools until you know which one is responsible for the result.

Requirements and compatibility checks
- Edition: the Steam discussion and installation material refer specifically to Batman: Arkham City GOTY. Confirm that a mod’s page names your edition before downloading.
- Platform: the Redux texture installation is documented for Windows and Linux, with a separate Steam Deck workflow. A Windows path or executable should not be assumed to work unchanged under Proton.
- Disk space: Redux lists a 4.9GB file. Reserve additional space for extraction and backups.
- Save safety: copy your saves and configuration before replacing files. A mod can be removed, but a damaged or overwritten configuration is harder to diagnose.
- Release matching: individual Nexus pages can have release-specific requirements. Check the exact version and required companion files immediately before combining mods.
- Achievements: Redux explicitly lists Steam-achievement support; do not generalize that claim to every gameplay or restoration mod.
Installing Arkham City Redux and the Advanced Launcher
The following process follows the documented Steam guide while keeping rollback in mind. Names and paths can vary slightly between Windows, Linux and Proton prefixes, so use your actual game directory rather than copying a path from another installation.
1. Start from a clean, verified game
- Install or update Batman: Arkham City GOTY through Steam.
- Run the unmodified game once to create its configuration folder and confirm that the campaign reaches the main menu.
- Close the game and Steam before copying or replacing files.
- Back up the game’s configuration and the files you are about to change. Include
BmEngine.iniand theCookedPCfolder.
2. Install the launcher
- Download the Advanced Launcher release that matches your edition from its mod page.
- Extract it into the game’s installation directory, following that release’s folder layout rather than nesting the files inside an extra archive folder.
- Start the replacement launcher and inspect the available graphics, startup-movie, color, HDR, FOV and logging options.
- Launch the game without adding the texture pack yet. This isolates launcher problems from texture-installation problems.
3. Add Redux textures
- Download the Arkham City Redux archive and extract it with a tool that preserves the folder structure.
- Follow the guide’s instruction for replacing the required
CookedPCcontent andBmEngine.ini. The guide warns that replacingBmEngine.iniis necessary for the texture pack. - Start the launcher, select a conservative graphics tier first, and verify that the main menu and a saved area load correctly.
- Increase tessellation, shadows or other high-tier options one at a time. If lighting becomes incorrect under DirectX 11, enable the launcher’s documented DirectX 11 Lighting Bug Fix.
4. Check the result
- Load an existing save and visit an exterior area, an interior and a combat encounter.
- Look for missing textures, unusually long loads, black or incorrectly lit surfaces and crashes when changing areas.
- Check the launcher log if a problem appears. Record the last setting or file you changed before attempting a rollback.
Steam Deck and Linux installation notes
The Steam Redux guide says texture-pack installation can be performed on Windows or Linux and gives a Steam Deck workflow. The key Deck operation is copying the installed CookedPC folder into the Deck’s game directory. Locate the Proton game directory created by your Steam installation, close the game, and preserve the original folder before replacing it.
The guide also warns that replacing BmEngine.ini is required for the texture pack and that the changed settings can stop the launcher working correctly until the file is reverted. Therefore, keep the original INI outside the game folder or use the guide’s backup mechanism before launching on Deck. If the launcher stops opening, restore the original INI first rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated files.

Deck performance is hardware- and settings-dependent. There is no published universal FPS result for Redux or the other mods here. Start with the launcher’s lower graphics tier, test a representative exterior scene, and raise quality only after confirming stable loading.
Adding gameplay mods without losing a working install
- Finish testing the launcher and, if desired, Redux on their own.
- Copy the working game folder or at least the files named by the new mod’s instructions. Make a separate save backup for a major overhaul.
- Install one gameplay mod, launch the game and test a repeatable combat or traversal sequence.
- For the Community Patch, verify the free-roam menu, additional skins and restored content before adding any other content-changing mod.
- For Faster Gliding and Special Combo Gadgets, test normal gliding, a landing and each optional gadget you intend to use.
- For Ascension, use a separate profile or a fully restorable backup because its broad gameplay changes can invalidate assumptions made by other mods.
There is no universal compatibility list covering every release combination. A page that works with the current Redux build may not work with an older patch or a later overhaul update, so read each mod page’s requirements for the exact files you have installed.

The original launcher no longer works
First restore the backed-up BmEngine.ini. The Redux guide specifically notes that the texture-pack settings can prevent the launcher from working until that file is reverted. If the launcher returns, reapply only the documented change and confirm the required file locations.
Textures are missing or the game crashes during loading
- Confirm that the
CookedPCfolder was copied into the correct game directory rather than an extra nested folder. - Check that the archive was fully extracted and that no files were blocked or left inside a compressed archive.
- Use the Advanced Launcher log to identify the last loaded asset.
- Restore the original folder and test the base game; this separates a damaged installation from a mod conflict.
Lighting looks wrong under DirectX 11
Enable the Advanced Launcher’s documented DirectX 11 Lighting Bug Fix, then retest the same scene. If the issue remains, return to the previous graphics tier and confirm that the original configuration is still available.
A gameplay mod changes more than expected
Disable the newest gameplay or restoration mod first. Do not remove several files simultaneously, because you will lose the ability to identify the conflicting component. Ascension is intentionally broad; treat unexpected balance or progression changes as part of its scope rather than assuming a texture problem.

You want to remove only the texture pack
The Redux guide documents a Restore Backup function for removing only the texture pack. Use that function when you want to retain the launcher but return the texture files to their previous state, and verify the game before installing anything else.
You want a completely clean reinstall
- Delete the game through Steam and redownload it.
- After the download finishes, delete the
Batman Arkham City GOTY Configfolder so the game can recreate it. - Run the clean game once, then reinstall mods one at a time.
This full-uninstall route is slower than restoring a backup, but it removes modified game files and stale configuration together.
Three practical mod setups
Visual-first, vanilla-preserving
Install the Advanced Launcher, confirm it starts, then add Arkham City Redux. Use the launcher’s higher graphics tiers only as far as your system remains stable. Leave gameplay and restoration mods out of this profile so a visual problem has a short list of possible causes.

Use the Advanced Launcher and Redux if you want the visual foundation, then add Faster Gliding and Special Combo Gadgets. Keep the special gadgets optional and test a normal combat encounter before enabling additional powers. This profile changes movement and convenience while preserving more of the original game’s structure than Ascension.
Expanded replay
Create a separate backup, install the Community Patch and verify its menus, skins and restored content. If you want a genuinely different and harder run after that, build another profile for Ascension rather than overwriting the restoration setup. Keeping these branches separate makes rollback and troubleshooting substantially easier.
What to expect from performance and image quality
Redux’s 4.9GB archive indicates a large asset replacement, not a guaranteed visual or performance outcome on every PC. High-resolution textures can increase memory pressure, while tessellation, shadows, HDR and FOV changes affect different parts of the rendering workload. The sensible method is controlled comparison: use the same save and location, change one setting, and watch for stutter, texture pop-in, lighting errors or loading failures.
Return To Arkham Graphics has a smaller installation footprint because it is a ReShade preset, but post-processing can alter contrast and color more dramatically than expected. Judge it on your display with HDR disabled or enabled consistently; otherwise you may mistake a display-pipeline difference for a mod defect.

- Keep the original
BmEngine.iniandCookedPCbackups outside the game directory. - Record the mod name, version date and installation order in a text file.
- Do not update a foundation mod in the middle of a story playthrough without a fresh backup.
- After a Steam game update, launch the unmodified or backed-up configuration once before assuming every mod remains compatible.
- When reporting a problem, include your game edition, operating system or Steam Deck, launcher version, texture-pack version and the last mod added.
Final recommendation
Start with Arkham City Redux plus the Advanced Launcher if you want the most complete graphics and setup improvement. Choose the Community Patch for restoration and free roam, Faster Gliding and Special Combo Gadgets for a restrained movement upgrade, and Ascension Overhaul only for a deliberately transformed challenge run. Return To Arkham Graphics is the lower-commitment visual alternative. Whichever route you take, isolate changes, preserve BmEngine.ini and CookedPC, and use the documented restore or full-uninstall procedure when a modded install stops behaving normally.
