The best cooling method depends on the heat load. Start by removing avoidable heat and improving airflow. Use evaporative fans when the room is only moderately warm and you can replace evaporated freshwater reliably. Choose a marine-rated aquarium chiller when the tank remains hot, the room approaches the aquarium’s target temperature, lighting and pumps add substantial heat, or a closed lid limits evaporation. Keep reef water stable at 24–28 °C (76–82 °F); 24–26 °C is the optimum coral range cited by EHEIM, and its documentation warns that corals die above 29.5 °C. Stability matters more than chasing one exact number.

A fan is inexpensive and simple but cannot cool water below the practical limit created by room temperature and humidity. A chiller provides controlled active refrigeration, but it costs more, consumes electricity, needs unobstructed ventilation and releases heat into the room. The safest setup combines sensible heat reduction, correctly sized cooling, automatic top-off and an alarm that identifies equipment failure before a temperature spike becomes prolonged.

What temperature is too hot for coral?

Red Sea’s MAX 250 Temperature Control guide recommends maintaining a reef aquarium at a stable 24–28 °C (76–82 °F), stating that stability is more important than the exact value. That is a practical operating band rather than a promise that every coral responds identically. A slightly higher temperature can be tolerated briefly when it changes steadily, but a rapid rise is more dangerous than a small, controlled deviation.

EHEIM’s climacontrol+ documentation gives a narrower optimum range of 24–26 °C and warns that corals die above 29.5 °C. Treat 29.5 °C as an emergency threshold, not a target or a safe daily setting. If the display is approaching that level, begin cooling immediately and look for the source of the heat rather than waiting for the controller to intervene.

Water temperature How to interpret it Action
24–26 °C EHEIM’s stated optimum coral range Maintain stability and avoid unnecessary swings.
24–28 °C (76–82 °F) Red Sea’s recommended stable reef range Use the temperature your livestock handles consistently; do not make abrupt corrections.
Above the normal target but below 29.5 °C Heat stress risk increases, especially if the rise is sudden or prolonged Reduce heat input, increase evaporation or start the chiller, and verify the thermometer.
Above 29.5 °C EHEIM’s coral-mortality warning Act as an emergency: provide reliable cooling, check circulation and monitor continuously.

Cooling methods compared

No single device is best for every reef. Compare the options against the conditions in your room, the tank’s total water volume and how much evaporation you can manage.

Method Cooling power and temperature limit Evaporation and top-off Noise and room heat Installation and saltwater use Operating cost and monitoring
Heat reduction and ventilation Removes avoidable heat; cannot actively lower water below room conditions No additional evaporation by itself Usually quiet; improves cabinet and room airflow Simple; safe for marine systems when pumps and filters remain unobstructed Lowest cost; still needs a thermometer and alarm
Evaporative fan Effective for moderate heat loads; cannot cool below the practical evaporative limit of the room High. Water level must be checked and freshwater replaced regularly Fan noise; heat is removed with the evaporated water rather than transferred to the room Simple on an open or ventilated surface or sump; keep salt spray away from the fan Low electricity cost; failure is easy to miss without a temperature alarm or water-level alert
Active aquarium chiller Controlled refrigeration; suitable when room heat or equipment load defeats passive cooling Little direct evaporation, although normal evaporation continues Compressor and fan noise; rejects heat into the room Requires marine-rated equipment, a separate filtered-water pump and clear ventilation space Higher purchase and electricity cost; thermostat, alarm and inspection are essential
Combined fan and chiller Fan handles moderate peaks while the chiller provides dependable control More evaporation whenever the fan runs Fan and chiller noise; chiller still adds heat to the room More components and more failure points Useful redundancy when monitored with an automatic top-off system

Reduce heat input before buying equipment

Cooling works better when the aquarium is not continuously adding avoidable heat. Red Sea specifically warns that restricted filter flow can overheat pumps and says its cooling fans must operate correctly. Make these checks before selecting a larger chiller.

Keep sunlight off the aquarium

Move the tank out of direct sunlight or block the sun from reaching the glass and water surface. Sunlight can add a large, variable heat load that makes a thermostat cycle unpredictably. A stable room location also makes your cooling settings easier to tune.

Ventilate the stand and room

Open or ventilate the cabinet so warm air does not collect around pumps, filters and lighting drivers. Check that intake and exhaust paths are not blocked. If a chiller runs during a prolonged hot spell, ventilate the room or use air conditioning: the chiller transfers heat from the water into the surrounding air, so a sealed, already-hot room reduces its effectiveness.

Inspect pumps, filters and flow paths

Verify that pumps and filters are not obstructed, that water is moving normally and that no pump is running hot because of restricted flow. Clean or correct the blockage according to the equipment manufacturer’s procedure. A chiller cannot compensate efficiently for a circulation problem that is itself generating heat.

Review lighting intensity and schedule

Lighting is another controllable heat source. Reduce unnecessary intensity or shorten the photoperiod during an exceptional heat event while preserving the needs of the livestock. Make changes deliberately rather than repeatedly switching equipment on and off, because coral and temperature stability both benefit from consistency.

When an evaporative aquarium fan is the right choice

A surface or sump fan moves air across the water. Evaporation removes heat, making a fan the lowest-cost first step for a moderate heat load. Red Sea says its fans can maintain the required range around a 22 °C ambient temperature; above 23 °C ambient, it says a chiller may be necessary. Those figures describe the documented system guidance, not a universal guarantee for every aquarium, room humidity level or fan.

Fan prerequisites

  • Provide an open or well-ventilated water surface so air can contact the water.
  • Use a stable water-level mark and check it daily while the fan is operating.
  • Replace evaporated water with freshwater through a reliable manual routine or automatic top-off system.
  • Keep the fan and its electrical connection away from salt spray and splashing.
  • Use a thermometer and high-temperature alarm; a failed fan may be silent while the tank continues heating.

Fan setup procedure

  1. Measure the aquarium temperature at the hottest part of the day for several days, and record room temperature at the same time.
  2. Install the fan so airflow crosses the water surface or sump without blowing salt spray onto electrical equipment.
  3. Start the fan when the water reaches a small amount above your normal target, rather than allowing a large swing.
  4. Observe the temperature and water level through the next hot period. Red Sea instructs owners to monitor water level daily because evaporation affects filtration and temperature stability.
  5. Add a top-off control if daily evaporation is difficult to manage, and confirm that the control cannot run continuously because of a stuck sensor or empty reservoir.
  6. If the fan cannot hold the tank inside the chosen stable range, stop treating it as the primary cooling method and size a chiller for the actual heat load.

When a chiller is the dependable solution

Use active refrigeration when the aquarium remains hot despite heat reduction and airflow, when the room temperature is close to the desired water temperature, or when a lid, high humidity, lighting, pumps or other equipment limits evaporation. A chiller is also a sensible safeguard when the livestock value makes a temperature spike unacceptable. Red Sea’s MAX 250 guide recommends installing a chiller as protection against sudden increases in temperature and specifies at least a 1/6 horsepower chiller for that system when ambient temperature is 23 °C or higher.

Do not apply the 1/6 HP figure to every reef tank. Required capacity depends on total water volume, starting and target temperatures, room temperature, lighting, pumps, filtration, lid design and ventilation. A unit that is too small may run continuously without reaching its setpoint; one that is oversized can cost more and cycle more often than necessary. Select a marine-rated chiller using the manufacturer’s capacity guidance for your complete system volume and heat load.

Published EHEIM climacontrol+ capacity classes

Model class Documented aquarium capacity Documented functions
climacontrol+ S Up to 500 litres Automatic cooling and heating; Wi-Fi monitoring
climacontrol+ M Up to 1,000 litres Automatic cooling and heating; Wi-Fi monitoring
climacontrol+ L Up to 2,000 litres Automatic cooling and heating; Wi-Fi monitoring

These are the capacity classes stated in EHEIM’s climacontrol+ documentation. They are not a substitute for checking the heat-load conditions in your room or for confirming that the specific marine installation meets the product instructions.

How to install a marine aquarium chiller safely

Installation details vary by model, but EHEIM gives several important marine-system requirements: feed the chiller with clean, filtered water from the filter tank through a separate pump, keep ventilation openings clear and leave at least 50 mm of clearance from walls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Calculate the system’s total water volume, including the display, sump and connected plumbing. Use the manufacturer’s rating for that volume as a starting point.
  2. Place the chiller where air can circulate around every ventilation opening. Maintain at least 50 mm clearance from walls as specified by EHEIM, and do not put the exhaust into a sealed cabinet.
  3. Install a separate pump that draws clean, filtered water from the filter tank. Do not feed the unit with dirty water that can obstruct the heat exchanger.
  4. Route the inlet and return lines securely, checking every connection for leaks before energizing the unit.
  5. Confirm that the pump provides the flow required by the chiller’s manual and that the return does not create excessive backpressure.
  6. Set a stable target appropriate for your livestock and verify it with an independent, accurate thermometer. Avoid rapid cycling by allowing a small differential above the normal target; the exact controller setting is model- and system-dependent, and the cited manufacturers do not publish one universal setpoint.
  7. Run the system during a warm period and watch both water temperature and room temperature. The chiller’s heat rejection can raise the room temperature and reduce cooling performance if ventilation is inadequate.
  8. Label the pump, chiller and alarm power connections so another person can identify the cooling circuit during an emergency.

Monitoring, alarms and automatic top-off

Cooling equipment is only protective when you know it is operating. Use an accurate thermometer or controller, a high-temperature alarm and, where evaporation is significant, an automatic top-off system. Keep a second thermometer available so a suspicious reading can be checked before you make a large temperature change.

  • Quick Heat Dissipation: Built-in fan and multiple ventilation holes help dissipate heat from the compressor, ensuring efficient operation. Leave at least 24 inches (60 cm) of space around the chiller for proper airflow and effective cooling

EHEIM’s climacontrol+ documentation describes an alert when temperature is 2 °C above or below target for more than five minutes. That is a documented product behavior, not a universal alarm setting. Configure your own controller so it warns early enough for you to investigate, while avoiding nuisance alarms from normal short-term variation.

What to monitor

  • Water temperature: Check the sensor location and compare it with an independent thermometer.
  • Room temperature: A chiller that runs continuously may be fighting a hot, poorly ventilated room.
  • Water level: Fans increase evaporation, and a low level can affect filtration and temperature stability.
  • Flow: Confirm that the filter, separate chiller pump and return line are not obstructed.
  • Equipment state: Verify that fans spin, the chiller starts when expected and alarms reach your phone or local display.

Top-off precautions

An automatic top-off system can replace evaporated freshwater and keep the water level stable, but it introduces another device that can fail. Keep the reservoir sized for the expected interval, protect the sensor from turbulence, and use a secondary limit or alarm to prevent continuous filling. Check the reservoir and sensor even when automation is enabled.

Summer operating plan

  1. Before hot weather, clean and inspect pumps, filters, fan guards, tubing and chiller ventilation openings.
  2. Record a normal temperature profile, including the warmest daily reading and room temperature.
  3. Remove direct sunlight and confirm that cabinet and room airflow are unobstructed.
  4. Test the fan, chiller, thermometer, alarm and automatic top-off independently.
  5. During hot days, check temperature and water level at least daily; increase checks if the reading is trending upward.
  6. Keep a backup plan for a power or equipment failure, such as a spare fan or a way to increase room ventilation, and avoid making a large temperature correction all at once.

Troubleshooting overheating

The fan runs but temperature keeps rising

Check room temperature, humidity, water-surface airflow and water level first. Confirm that the fan is actually moving air across the water rather than merely circulating warm air inside the cabinet. Inspect pumps and filters for restricted flow, reduce avoidable lighting heat and verify the thermometer. If the room is above the conditions where the fan can maintain the range, use a correctly sized chiller.

The chiller runs continuously

Look for an undersized unit, blocked ventilation, a hot room, inadequate water flow or a new heat source such as lighting or a pump. Confirm that the water is reaching the chiller through clean, filtered water and that its separate pump meets the specified flow. Do not solve continuous operation by lowering the target repeatedly; find the heat load and improve ventilation.

The temperature reading changes abruptly

Check sensor placement, probe condition and circulation before changing the setpoint. Compare the reading with an independent thermometer. If the rise is real, inspect for a failed fan, heater, pump or chiller and begin immediate cooling. A stable, gradual correction is safer than repeatedly switching equipment or making a sudden extreme adjustment.

The water level falls faster after adding a fan

That is expected from evaporative cooling. Increase the frequency of freshwater top-off or add a properly monitored automatic top-off system. Red Sea emphasizes daily water-level checks because evaporation affects both filtration and temperature stability.

Choosing the right setup

  • Cool room, moderate heat load and open surface: Begin with heat reduction and a monitored evaporative fan.
  • Room temperature near the desired water temperature: A fan may have too little evaporative headroom; plan for a chiller.
  • Closed lid, high humidity or substantial lighting and pump heat: Active refrigeration is more dependable than relying only on evaporation.
  • Large or valuable reef system: Combine correctly sized active cooling with alarms, automatic top-off and a tested backup response.
  • Any system: Keep the water stable, investigate trends early and never use a published capacity or horsepower figure as a universal sizing rule.

Sources and scope of the temperature guidance

The 24–28 °C stable reef range and the MAX 250 fan and 1/6 HP recommendations come from Red Sea’s MAX 250 Temperature Control guide, accessed in 2026. The 24–26 °C optimum coral range, above-29.5 °C mortality warning, climacontrol+ capacity classes and two-degree, five-minute alert behavior come from EHEIM GmbH & Co.
