For most Canadian wildlife, start with iNaturalist Canada. It covers plants, animals and fungi, combines automated identification with community review, and is designed to turn a sighting into a shareable scientific observation. Choose Seek by iNaturalist for quick, account-free camera identification and family learning; Merlin Bird ID for identifying birds from sound or photographs; and NatureCounts when you are collecting observations for a breeding-bird atlas, biodiversity survey or other organized project.
The best app depends on whether you need an identification, a private learning tool, a public record, or a project-specific submission. Those are different jobs, and no single app handles them all equally well.

Quick decision: which Canadian wildlife app should you use?
| Your goal | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Identify and publicly record almost any wild organism | iNaturalist Canada | Broad taxonomic coverage, bilingual Canadian service, automated suggestions and community-reviewed observations |
| Point a phone at an organism and learn without creating an account | Seek by iNaturalist | Camera-first experience, badges, local organism lists and privacy-oriented defaults |
| Identify a bird by sound or photo | Merlin Bird ID | Sound ID, Photo ID, saved identifications and downloadable offline bird packages |
| Submit data to an atlas, survey or monitoring project | NatureCounts | Direct field submission, project access, customizable protocols and eBird synchronization |
You can combine the apps. For example, use Merlin to work out which bird you heard, then submit the appropriate record through eBird, iNaturalist or the project platform requested by the survey organizer. Use Seek to learn what you are seeing, then make a separate iNaturalist observation if you want a public conservation record.
What makes a wildlife app useful in Canada?
Canadian wildlife identification has two separate stages: recognizing an organism and documenting an occurrence. A camera suggestion may help you decide whether a plant is a goldenrod or whether a bird resembles a thrush, but a useful record also needs evidence, time and place. Reporting systems add another layer by checking identifications, applying survey rules and making data available to researchers or conservation programs.

When comparing apps, look at these seven characteristics:
- Taxonomic breadth: whether the app handles birds only or also mammals, insects, plants, fungi and other organisms.
- Input type: camera view, still photograph, sound recording or a combination.
- Community verification: whether other users can review and agree with an identification.
- Structured-survey support: whether the app can enforce a project’s protocol instead of accepting only casual sightings.
- Offline capability: whether identification or data entry can continue without a connection.
- Privacy defaults: how precisely a location is exposed and whether an account is required.
- Record destination: whether the result remains a personal learning note, becomes a public observation or is delivered to a defined monitoring project.
iNaturalist Canada: best overall for identification and reporting
iNaturalist Canada is the strongest default for a person who wants one place to identify and report a wide range of Canadian wildlife. Its Canadian service offers a bilingual interface, instant identification of plants and animals, and a way to create and share research-quality data. The service says its community includes more than one million scientists and naturalists. In Canada, it is led by the Canadian Wildlife Federation with the Royal Ontario Museum, Parks Canada and NatureServe Canada.
What iNaturalist is good at
- Recording organisms across many groups rather than limiting you to birds.
- Attaching photographs or sounds to an encounter.
- Letting a community review the automated or user-supplied identification.
- Turning a personal sighting into data that can be useful for biodiversity work.
- Supporting a Canadian audience in both official languages.
It is the best choice when your question is “What species is this, and how can I report it?” It is also the best of these options when you do not yet know whether the subject is a bird, mammal, insect, plant or fungus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow an iNaturalist observation becomes stronger
iNaturalist defines an observation as an encounter with an organism at a particular time and location, accompanied by information such as text, photos and tags. An observation starts as Casual. It can become Research Grade when it has a date, a georeference, photographic or sound evidence, represents a wild organism and receives community agreement on an identification.
That status distinction matters. An automated suggestion is not the same as a verified record. Treat the first species name shown by the app as a hypothesis. Check the image, compare similar species, add the clearest evidence you have and allow other observers to review the record.
How to report a sighting with iNaturalist Canada
- Capture evidence before leaving the site. Take several photographs when possible: a full view, a close view of distinctive markings and, for plants or fungi, relevant leaves, stems, bark, flowers or undersides. A sound recording can help when an animal cannot be photographed.
- Record when and where you saw it. The observation needs a date and georeference. Check the map pin rather than assuming the phone selected the exact trail, shoreline or park location.
- Describe the encounter. Add behavior, habitat, number of individuals and any feature that may distinguish similar species. Keep the description factual; do not turn a guess into a certainty.
- Review the suggested identification. Compare it with the visible evidence. If the suggestion is only a genus or family, leave it at that level rather than forcing a species name.
- Submit the observation for community review. Other users can agree, refine or challenge the identification. Research Grade depends on the required evidence and community agreement, not on the first automated result.
- Protect sensitive locations when appropriate. Consider the risk of exposing a nest, den, rare plant or other vulnerable site before making a precise location public.
Seek by iNaturalist: best for quick, account-free learning
Seek is the easiest entry point for children, families and anyone who wants to point a phone at a living thing and get a rapid identification. Its official description says it can identify wildlife, plants and fungi through the camera, show commonly recorded organisms in the user’s area and award badges. Registration is not required.
Why choose Seek
- Camera-first interaction: aim at the organism instead of first building a formal observation.
- Low commitment: the app can be used without creating an account.
- Learning features: local organism lists and badges make repeated outdoor exploration engaging.
- Privacy-conscious defaults: location is obscured for local suggestions, and precise location is not stored unless the user signs in and submits observations.
- Kid-friendly use: the no-registration model and emphasis on exploration suit supervised family outings.
Seek is not the same thing as a public reporting workflow. Its privacy and no-account defaults are useful when the goal is learning, but they also mean that a sighting does not automatically become a conservation record. If you want the observation available for community review or analysis, submit it through iNaturalist or the project platform requested by a monitoring program.

How to move from a Seek identification to a report
- Use Seek’s camera to examine the organism and note the suggested identification.
- Take your own clear photographs and record the date and location while you are still in the field.
- Check the suggestion against the visible characteristics; do not treat a badge or automated result as verification.
- If you want a public record, create a corresponding observation in iNaturalist with the evidence and location details, or enter it into the relevant project platform.
- For sensitive wildlife, avoid publishing a precise location unless the reporting project specifically requires it and the disclosure is safe.
Merlin Bird ID: best app to identify a bird by sound or photo
Merlin Bird ID is the specialist choice when the subject is a bird. Its help center lists Sound ID, Photo ID, the ability to save birds identified with Merlin and offline bird packages. That combination makes it particularly useful when you hear a call before you see the bird or when a bird moves too quickly for a long field observation.
When Merlin is the right first step
- You have a recording or live sound and want an app to identify a bird by sound.
- You have a photograph and want a bird-focused photo identification.
- You are traveling or working where connectivity is unreliable and have installed the relevant offline package.
- You want to build a personal list of birds identified with the app.
Merlin is primarily an identification aid for birders. Identification and reporting are separate decisions: after Merlin suggests a species, use a reporting destination such as eBird or iNaturalist when a formal or public record is appropriate.
How to use Merlin responsibly
- Prepare before going offline. Install the bird package needed for your region before entering an area without a connection.
- Use Sound ID or Photo ID. Choose Sound ID for calls and songs, or Photo ID when you have an image with enough visible detail.
- Check the result against context. Consider habitat, season, behavior and the quality of the recording or photograph. Background noise, overlapping calls and poor light can produce a plausible but incorrect suggestion.
- Save the identification if useful. Merlin supports saving birds identified with the app, which helps maintain a personal reference list.
- Report through the appropriate platform. Submit the sighting to eBird, iNaturalist or an organized project when the record is meant to contribute to a dataset. Include the evidence and circumstances rather than copying an unverified label without checking it.
NatureCounts: best for organized monitoring and project protocols
NatureCounts is designed for people collecting data under a defined monitoring program, breeding-bird atlas or biodiversity project. Birds Canada describes it as a mobile tool for birds and biodiversity with direct field submission, customizable protocols, project data access and eBird synchronization.
Its stated capacity includes 2 million records submitted, 45 projects supported, 75 customized protocols created, 140,000 checklists submitted and 12,000 hours of saved data-entry time. Birds Canada gives no year for these figures, so they should be read as reported totals rather than as a dated annual performance measure.
Why protocols matter
A casual sighting and a survey checklist answer different questions. A casual sighting may document that an organism was present. A protocol-based survey also records the conditions and effort needed to compare one site or date with another. NatureCounts is the better fit when a project coordinator tells you which fields, timing, route, count method or checklist to use.
How to submit through NatureCounts
- Join or select the relevant project. Use the project’s instructions so your data enters the correct program rather than a generic personal list.
- Choose the project protocol. NatureCounts supports customized protocols; select the one that matches the survey, atlas or monitoring activity.
- Collect observations in the field. Enter the requested species, counts, location, date, effort and other protocol fields while details are fresh.
- Review the checklist before sending it. A missing effort value or incorrect site can make an otherwise accurate species record difficult to use.
- Submit directly from the mobile tool. NatureCounts is built for field submission and project data access.
- Use synchronization where appropriate. NatureCounts says, “With NatureCounts, you can collect data tailored to your project and still contribute your sightings to eBird.” Follow the project’s instructions for that connection rather than submitting the same checklist twice.
iNaturalist versus Seek
| Criterion | iNaturalist Canada | Seek by iNaturalist |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Identification plus public, community-reviewed observations | Camera-based exploration and learning |
| Coverage | Broad wildlife, plants and other organisms | Wildlife, plants and fungi through the camera |
| Account | Account and submission workflow are used for shared observations | No registration required for the core experience |
| Community review | Yes; community agreement contributes to Research Grade | Designed around immediate learning rather than a Research Grade observation |
| Location behavior | Observations include a georeference; choose disclosure carefully for sensitive species | Location is obscured for local suggestions; precise location is not stored unless a user signs in and submits observations |
| Best outcome | A documented record that can be reviewed and used in biodiversity data | A quick identification, local discovery list or family activity |
Choose Seek when friction and privacy are the priority. Choose iNaturalist when the record itself matters.
Merlin versus eBird: identification is not reporting
Merlin and eBird are often mentioned together because birders may use one to identify a bird and the other to report it. Their roles are different. Merlin provides Sound ID, Photo ID, saved identifications and offline bird packages. eBird is a possible destination for a bird sighting or checklist. NatureCounts also supports eBird synchronization for projects that use it.

Do not submit a species solely because an automated model produced a confident-sounding name. Verify the bird as far as the evidence allows and preserve the recording or photograph when the reporting platform permits it.

The app matters less than the quality and honesty of the record. The following workflow works across the four choices, with the destination adapted to your purpose.
1. Decide whether the sighting is wild
iNaturalist’s Research Grade requirements specify that the observation represent a wild organism. A zoo animal, captive pet or planted ornamental may be interesting, but it should not be presented as a wild occurrence.
2. Preserve evidence
Photographs and sounds are more useful than memory alone. Keep the original file when possible, and capture more than one angle or recording if the first evidence does not show the identifying feature.
3. Capture time and location
Record the date and georeference accurately. If you are moving along a trail, confirm that the pin follows the actual observation point instead of the place where the app last had a signal.

4. Describe what happened
Note habitat, behavior, visible field marks, number of individuals and the circumstances of the encounter. Distinguish what you observed from what the app inferred.
5. Choose the correct destination
- iNaturalist Canada: broad species coverage and community review.
- Seek: personal or family learning when no public record is required.
- Merlin: bird identification from sound or photo, followed by a reporting platform if needed.
- NatureCounts: project, atlas and protocol-based submissions.
6. Protect vulnerable wildlife
Consider whether a precise public location could expose a nest, den, rare plant or other sensitive site. Seek’s obscured-location default is specifically useful for low-risk exploration; public reporting systems require more deliberate privacy decisions.

7. Accept uncertainty
Report at the highest confidence level supported by the evidence. A family- or genus-level record is more useful than an incorrect species-level claim, and community review can improve an iNaturalist observation later.
Offline use, privacy and data quality
Offline capability
Merlin explicitly supports offline bird packages. Download them before leaving coverage and confirm that the package includes the birds relevant to the region you will visit. The available material does not establish equivalent offline identification or submission features for iNaturalist Canada, Seek or NatureCounts, so plan to retain photographs, sounds, times and locations for later entry if connectivity is uncertain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Privacy defaults
Seek has the clearest privacy-oriented default in this group: it does not require registration, obscures location for local suggestions and does not store precise location unless the user signs in and submits observations. iNaturalist observations depend on a georeference for Research Grade, so review the location setting before publishing a sensitive sighting. For NatureCounts, follow the project’s data policy; for Merlin, remember that a saved identification is not automatically a public report.
Automated identification and verification
All camera- or sound-assisted tools should be treated as aids, not authorities. Lighting, angle, distance, background noise, seasonal plumage and geographically similar species can mislead an automated suggestion. The strongest records preserve evidence and make room for human review.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Submitting an identification without evidence
Problem: The record contains only a species name copied from an app. Fix: Add a photograph or sound, or lower the identification to a level the available evidence supports.
Confusing a learning result with a report
Problem: A Seek badge or Merlin result is assumed to have entered a conservation database. Fix: Submit a separate observation to iNaturalist, eBird or the designated NatureCounts project.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Problem: A checklist is entered as a casual sighting even though an atlas or monitoring project requires a specific method. Fix: Select the project and its customized protocol before collecting or submitting data.
Best Value
Publishing a sensitive location
Problem: A precise nest, den or rare-plant location is made public unnecessarily. Fix: Review location privacy and use the reporting option or project guidance intended for sensitive records.
Overstating what an app knows
Problem: An automated suggestion is described as verified. Fix: Label it as a suggestion until evidence and, where applicable, community agreement support the identification.
Which app should different users install?
Families and first-time nature explorers
Start with Seek. Its camera workflow, badges, local organism lists and no-registration use make it easy to explore without turning every walk into data entry. Move to iNaturalist when a child or family wants to share a sighting publicly and learn from community feedback.
General wildlife observers
Use iNaturalist Canada as the main app. It is the broadest option in this group and the one most directly aligned with both identification and reporting.
Birders who hear more than they see
Install Merlin Bird ID with the appropriate offline package. Use Sound ID for calls, Photo ID for images and a reporting platform for the final record.
Volunteers in an atlas or monitoring program
Use NatureCounts when the organizer specifies it. Its value is the protocol and project connection, not merely the ability to name a species.
Observers with limited connectivity
Merlin is the documented choice for offline bird identification. For other taxa, capture durable evidence and field notes, then complete the iNaturalist or NatureCounts submission when you reconnect.
