For trustworthy oil, gasoline, diesel, and inventory data, start with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Its petroleum dashboards provide ready-made charts and downloads, while the Open Data API supports repeatable spreadsheet, script, and alerting workflows. There is no need to rely on an app that mixes unofficial quotes with unexplained averages: choose the EIA dashboard for quick checks, the weekly retail-price series for pump prices, and APIv2 when you need automation.
This guide explains which EIA tool fits each job, how to compare WTI and Brent with published EIA values, how to monitor gasoline prices near you, and how to avoid common errors involving geography, series definitions, update schedules, and methodology changes.

The best choice depends on what you need to monitor
“Best app” means different things for a casual reader checking today’s oil market and an analyst building a recurring inventory report. EIA’s tools cover the main use cases, but they are not identical interfaces. Use this decision table before choosing a workflow.
| Need | Best EIA option | What it provides | Technical effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick overview of crude, gasoline, diesel, heating oil, propane, and stocks | Petroleum summary dashboard | Official charts, definitions, and downloadable petroleum series | Low |
| U.S. gasoline or on-highway diesel prices | Weekly retail gasoline and diesel price data | Selectable weekly series and geographic comparisons | Low |
| Crude-oil and petroleum inventories | Petroleum summary and stocks datasets | Stocks alongside production, imports, inputs, exports, and prices | Low to moderate |
| Repeatable queries, spreadsheets, scripts, or alerts | EIA Open Data APIv2 | Filtered columns, date ranges, facets, metadata, and machine-readable results | Moderate |
| Crude imports by source and destination | EIA Crude Import Tracking Tool | A dedicated view of crude-import movements | Low |
The dashboard and weekly-price pages are browser tools rather than a single all-in-one native mobile app. On a phone, save the relevant EIA page to your home screen if you want app-like access. For automated notifications, connect APIv2 data to your own spreadsheet, script, or monitoring service.

Why EIA is the reference point
EIA is the U.S. government’s statistical agency for energy. Its Open Data portal offers free, open API access to petroleum datasets covering prices, stocks, sales, production, imports, exports, and related series. The EIA tools directory also gathers dashboards, projections, bulk downloads, and the Crude Import Tracking Tool in one place.
That breadth matters because an oil-price quote by itself does not explain refinery inputs, product inventories, imports, or exports. EIA lets you examine those related series using documented definitions and consistent geographic fields. You can move from a chart to downloadable data without changing providers.
EIA describes its purpose as making energy data “more accessible, understandable, relevant, and responsive to your needs.” The practical implication is that the source, unit, frequency, and geography are documented rather than hidden behind an app’s proprietary calculation.
Use the petroleum summary dashboard for an all-round view
The petroleum summary dashboard is the best starting point when you want several liquid-fuel markets in one place. It covers crude oil, gasoline, heating oil, diesel, propane, and other liquids, with price- and stock-related series.
What the dashboard is good for
- Checking whether a movement in crude coincides with a change in product prices or inventories.
- Viewing official definitions before downloading a series for analysis.
- Comparing daily, weekly, monthly, and annual petroleum series where EIA publishes them.
- Downloading data without writing code.
A practical dashboard routine
- Open the petroleum summary area from the EIA tools directory.
- Select the fuel category, such as crude oil, motor gasoline, diesel, heating oil, or propane.
- Read the series description and unit before interpreting the chart.
- Set the date range and frequency that match your question.
- Record the geography and product definition shown with the series.
- Download the displayed data if you need to preserve the observation set in a spreadsheet.
Do not treat every line as a live market quote. Some EIA weekly and monthly prices are calculated from daily closing spot prices. A published average can therefore differ from an intraday quote in a market app even when both are labeled with the same commodity.
Track crude oil prices without mixing unlike series
Readers usually mean WTI or Brent when they ask for an oil-price app. EIA data can be used alongside those benchmarks, but the comparison is meaningful only when you identify the exact series, frequency, and timestamp.
Spot prices, futures closes, and EIA averages
EIA documents official NYMEX closing prices at 2:30 p.m. for specified delivery months. It also explains that some weekly and monthly prices are calculated from daily closing spot prices. These are different observations:

- Intraday quote: a market value that can change continuously while trading is open.
- Exchange close: a documented closing value tied to a contract and settlement time.
- EIA weekly or monthly value: an aggregation that may be calculated from daily closing spot prices.
When a chart appears to disagree with an app, check whether one source shows a futures contract and the other shows a spot-price average. Also check the delivery month, currency, unit, and time zone. A difference does not automatically indicate an error.
How to build a reliable oil-price watchlist
- Choose the benchmark you actually need, such as WTI or Brent.
- Choose one frequency for the comparison: daily, weekly, monthly, or annual.
- Keep the contract or spot definition consistent across the period.
- Note the publication or closing time attached to each observation.
- Use the EIA description and metadata to document the unit and calculation method.
Monitor gasoline prices near you
EIA’s weekly retail gasoline route is the appropriate official starting point for U.S. pump-price comparisons. It provides selectable weekly series and distinguishes conventional gasoline areas from reformulated-gasoline (RFG) areas.
Conventional versus reformulated gasoline
Conventional and RFG series are not interchangeable. If you compare one state or region using a conventional series with another using an RFG series, the apparent price difference may reflect the product definition rather than a market advantage. Select the same series type and comparable geography before drawing a conclusion.
Steps for a local price comparison
- Open EIA’s weekly retail gasoline price data.
- Select the gasoline grade and the geographic series relevant to your question.
- Check whether the selected area uses conventional gasoline or RFG.
- Choose the same week and series definition for every location you compare.
- Export the observations if you need to calculate a spread or maintain a history.
EIA’s gasoline methodology documentation records a methodology change implemented on May 14, 2018. If you are analyzing a long historical series, mark that date in your notes and avoid assuming that every older observation was produced under the current method.

EIA publishes U.S. averages and defined geographic series; it is not a station-by-station crowd-sourced map. A weekly regional or state series is useful for trend and comparison, but it will not necessarily match the price on a particular street or at a specific station. For a single station, you would need a separate local-price source; use EIA to anchor the broader regional benchmark.
Track diesel prices and account for the 2023 methodology change
EIA’s weekly on-highway diesel series is the official route for recurring U.S. diesel-price checks. The agency implemented a methodology change for weekly on-highway diesel estimates on June 13, 2023.
That date matters when you calculate year-over-year changes or join older and newer data in a model. Keep the methodology note with your dataset, and investigate an unexpected break around the implementation date before attributing it to the fuel market.

Find crude-oil and petroleum inventories
For inventory research, combine the petroleum summary with EIA’s stocks datasets. The stocks API covers petroleum and crude-oil stocks, while the summary API includes production, imports, inputs, stocks, exports, and prices.
Questions inventory data can answer
- Are crude stocks rising or falling over the selected period?
- Is a stock movement occurring alongside changes in production or imports?
- Are refinery inputs, exports, or product inventories moving in the same direction?
- Does the apparent change persist across weekly observations or appear as a one-period movement?
Avoid the most common inventory mistake
“Inventory” is not one universal number. Confirm whether you selected crude oil, a petroleum product, a total category, or another stocks definition. Record the geography, unit, frequency, and date convention. Do not combine a weekly stocks series with a monthly production series and describe the result as if both were measured on the same schedule.
Use APIv2 when you need repeatable monitoring
EIA APIv2 is designed for technical users who need the same query repeatedly. EIA describes it as RESTful and hierarchically organized, with support for selected columns, date ranges, facets, and dataset metadata. Registration is required to obtain an API key.
Set up an API-based workflow
- Register through EIA’s Open Data service and obtain an API key.
- Identify the dataset that matches your question, such as petroleum summary, stocks, weekly gasoline, or weekly diesel.
- Read the dataset metadata before requesting observations. Confirm units, frequency, geography, product, and available facets.
- Choose only the columns you need and set a date range. Narrow requests are easier to audit and less likely to mix definitions.
- Apply facets for geography, product, or another documented dimension instead of filtering an ambiguous combined result later.
- Save the query parameters, retrieval date, and metadata with the downloaded results.
- Schedule the query in your spreadsheet or script if you need a recurring report.
- Send the returned values to your alerting system only after defining a rule, such as a threshold or week-over-week change.
APIv2 version 2.1.12 patch notes were published in March 2026. Treat the API documentation and metadata as the authority for current field names and behavior rather than copying an old example from a forum.
Design alerts that do not create noise
An alert should specify the series, geography, frequency, comparison window, and threshold. For example, an alert can watch one documented stocks series and trigger when the latest weekly value differs from the prior observation by a chosen amount. Do not trigger on an unqualified “oil price” field: the alert could silently switch between spot, futures, or an average series.
Understand update frequency and seasonal coverage
EIA exposes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual petroleum series. Match the frequency to the decision:

| Frequency | Useful for | Interpretation caution |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Market monitoring and short-term price or stock changes | May reflect closing conventions rather than an intraday quote |
| Weekly | Retail gasoline and diesel, recurring inventory checks | Check product definition, geography, and methodology notes |
| Monthly | Trend analysis and cross-series comparisons | May be calculated from daily closing spot prices |
| Annual | Long-run context and structural comparisons | Too slow for short-term trading or inventory alerts |
Heating-oil and propane prices are collected weekly during the October–March heating season. Outside that season, do not assume a missing observation means the price was unchanged; the collection schedule itself is seasonal.
Dashboard, download, or API: a practical comparison
| Approach | Advantages | Limitations | Best user |
|---|---|---|---|
| EIA dashboard | Fast visual context, definitions, and downloads | Manual refresh; limited automation | General reader or occasional researcher |
| Weekly price pages | Focused gasoline and diesel series with geographic selection | Not a station-by-station live map | Drivers, businesses, and regional analysts |
| Stocks and summary datasets | Inventory data connected to production, trade, inputs, and prices | Requires careful series selection | Inventory-focused research |
| APIv2 | Repeatable filters, metadata, exports, and external alerts | Registration and technical setup required | Analysts, developers, and monitoring teams |
Common pitfalls and how to fix them
Comparing unlike geographies
Symptom: Two prices appear far apart, but the difference is unexplained. Fix: Verify that both observations use the same geographic level and product definition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confusing a market quote with an EIA average
Symptom: An app’s current quote does not match the weekly or monthly EIA value. Fix: Identify whether each number is intraday, an NYMEX close, a spot price, or an EIA calculation based on daily closes.
Ignoring methodology breaks
Symptom: A historical chart shows a sudden discontinuity. Fix: Check the gasoline methodology change dated May 14, 2018, and the on-highway diesel change implemented June 13, 2023, before interpreting the break as a market event.
Using an incomplete inventory label
Symptom: A report says “oil inventories” without specifying what was measured. Fix: Preserve the exact stocks series name, unit, geography, and frequency in the report.
Expecting a native app or push alerts from a dashboard
Symptom: You cannot find automatic notifications in the chart interface. Fix: Use APIv2 and connect the returned data to a spreadsheet, script, or external alerting system.

Because the data is open and downloadable, you can keep a local history for audit purposes. Save the retrieval date and metadata; a later correction or methodology update can otherwise make an old spreadsheet difficult to reproduce.
A reliable setup for most readers
If you only need occasional information, bookmark the petroleum summary dashboard and the weekly gasoline or diesel page. If inventories matter, add the stocks dataset and keep the exact series definition with every chart. If you repeatedly answer the same question, move to APIv2: register for a key, select documented facets, restrict the date range, save the query, and build alerts around a clearly defined series.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one EIA app that combines WTI, Brent, gasoline prices, and inventories?
EIA provides these categories through related dashboards, weekly price pages, stocks datasets, and APIv2 rather than one single native app. The dashboard is the simplest combined viewing point; APIv2 is the practical way to combine recurring series in your own spreadsheet or monitoring system.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCan EIA show the exact gasoline price at a nearby station?
EIA’s weekly retail data provides official U.S. averages and defined geographic series, not a station-by-station live map. Use the regional series for a consistent benchmark and a separate local source for an individual station.
Why does my oil app disagree with an EIA number?
The values may represent different observations: an intraday quote, an NYMEX closing price for a specified delivery month, a daily spot price, or a weekly or monthly EIA value calculated from daily closes. Compare the series definition, timestamp, contract, frequency, and unit before judging the difference.
Do I need programming experience to use EIA APIv2?
No programming is needed for the dashboards and downloads. APIv2 is intended for repeatable technical workflows, so a spreadsheet user can begin with saved requests while developers can automate queries and alerts.
Why are heating-oil or propane observations missing outside winter?
EIA states that heating-oil and propane prices are collected weekly during the October–March heating season. A missing observation outside that collection period should not be interpreted as an unchanged price.
