Best Antivirus Software for a Linux Server in 2026

ClamAV, ESET Server Security for Linux, Sophos Protection for Linux and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint each suit a different server environment. Learn when Linux antivirus is necessary, how on-access scanning works, what distributions and kernels are supported, and how to avoid Fanotify conflicts.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ClamAV is the best baseline for teams that want an open-source scanner; ESET Server Security for Linux and Sophos Protection for Linux are the strongest conventional commercial choices; and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux is the logical fit for organizations already standardized on Microsoft security management. The right answer depends on your distribution and kernel, whether files must be inspected as they arrive, how much centralized policy and response you need, and whether another security agent already uses Linux Fanotify.

A mail gateway, shared-storage server, or host that exchanges files with Windows systems has a clear reason to scan. A narrowly scoped, hardened server may gain more from least privilege, patching, application allow-listing, and integrity monitoring than from a permanently enabled antivirus process. This guide explains where each option fits and how to deploy one without creating conflicts or an unmanageable maintenance burden.

The short list for different Linux server jobs

Product Best fit Protection and management profile Important qualification
ClamAV Open-source scanning, mail gateways, file shares, scripts and scheduled jobs On-demand scanning through ClamScan, daemon-based scanning through ClamD, and Linux-only on-access scanning through ClamOnAcc You design updates, quarantine, alerting, permissions and performance controls; ClamAV documentation recommends at least 3 GiB of RAM for Linux server editions using ClamScan or ClamD with the standard Cisco signature database
ESET Server Security for Linux Organizations wanting a supported commercial server agent and endpoint portfolio Vendor-maintained engine and policy capabilities; exact server features depend on the licensed release Confirm the release, architecture, kernel and license for the target distribution. ESET lists Endpoint Antivirus for Linux 13.2.3.0, released June 30, 2026, as fully supported, while server packaging should be checked separately
Sophos Protection for Linux Existing Sophos estates that need a centrally managed Linux agent Managed protection with a published distribution and kernel support matrix The retired Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux must be replaced; old installation tutorials can point to the wrong product
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux Organizations already licensing Microsoft security, Azure or Defender for Servers Centralized Microsoft security and response workflows, subject to the selected server license A server license is required. Microsoft warns that blocking Fanotify agents cannot safely be stacked, and Amazon Linux 2 ARM64 support is scheduled to retire on October 31, 2026
Bitdefender enterprise products Business environments evaluating a broader enterprise security portfolio Enterprise Linux support is available in its business portfolio Bitdefender states that it does not offer a consumer Linux antivirus. Do not select a consumer edition for a production server

Do Linux servers need antivirus?

There is no universal yes or no. Linux is not immune to malicious files, compromised accounts, supply-chain abuse or attacks against services. Antivirus is most valuable when the server receives content from less-trusted systems or acts as a crossing point between users, operating systems and networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workloads where scanning is usually justified

  • Mail gateways: messages and attachments can carry malware intended for Windows or macOS clients even when the gateway itself runs Linux.
  • File shares and collaboration servers: a scanner can inspect files as they are uploaded or on a schedule before another user downloads them.
  • Transfer and build servers: systems accepting archives, installers, documents or customer uploads benefit from a controlled inspection point.
  • Mixed operating-system environments: scanning at the Linux boundary reduces the chance that a Windows workstation receives a known malicious file.
  • Compliance-driven operations: an enterprise may require a supported agent, centralized evidence and defined response procedures regardless of the operating system.

When antivirus may be secondary

A server with one tightly defined service, no user-uploaded files and strict network controls may get greater risk reduction from timely patching, minimal packages, least-privilege service accounts, strong authentication, network segmentation, application allow-listing and file-integrity monitoring. That does not make malware scanning useless; it means the scanner should be weighed against its CPU, memory, I/O and operational complexity.

What to verify before choosing a product

Product names are less important than compatibility and operating behavior. Record the exact image, architecture, kernel and filesystems before buying or installing anything.

  • Distribution and kernel: match the vendor’s support matrix to the precise release, point version, architecture and running kernel. “Linux supported” is not enough.
  • Protection mode: distinguish scheduled or on-demand scans from on-access prevention. Real-time monitoring can change application latency and requires kernel integration.
  • Management: decide whether you need a cloud console, policy inheritance, alert routing, isolation and investigation, or whether local scripts and logs are sufficient.
  • Resource budget: account for resident memory, scan-time CPU, disk reads and the effect on databases, backups and busy file shares.
  • Update path: define how signatures and engines are downloaded, verified, staged and rolled back when a bad update or connectivity outage occurs.
  • Lifecycle: check how long the agent supports your kernel and distribution and what migration path exists when a product is retired.
  • Agent interactions: identify Fanotify users, FAPolicyD rules, EDR tools, backup software and storage appliances before enabling blocking mode.
  • Licensing: establish whether the commercial product is licensed per server, workload or subscription tier, and whether the required management console is included.

ClamAV: the open-source scanning baseline

What ClamAV provides

ClamAV is a cross-platform, open-source toolkit rather than a preconfigured security service. ClamScan performs direct scans, ClamD keeps a scanning daemon available for applications and automation, and ClamOnAcc supplies Linux on-access scanning. ClamAV’s documentation states that “On-Access is only available on Linux systems.”

This model works well when administrators want to integrate scanning into a mail transfer pipeline, file-upload workflow, scheduled maintenance job or custom quarantine process. It also leaves responsibility for deciding what happens when a detection occurs: deny the upload, move the file, alert an operator, record an audit event or continue in a monitored mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory and service design

For Linux server editions using ClamScan or ClamD with the standard Cisco signature database, ClamAV documentation recommends at least 3 GiB of RAM. Treat that as a planning floor for the scanner, not as a promise that a busy file server will perform well with only that amount. Signature loading, concurrent scans, filesystem cache and the workload itself can require more headroom.

ClamD is generally preferable to starting a fresh scanner process for every file because a resident daemon can keep the engine loaded. Limit concurrent work, exclude temporary and cache paths that cannot contain user content, and measure I/O on the real workload. On-access monitoring should be restricted to directories that need immediate inspection; watching an entire high-churn database or container filesystem can create avoidable overhead.

Operational checklist

  1. Inventory the distribution, architecture, kernel, mounted filesystems and the directories that actually receive untrusted content.
  2. Install the distribution-supported ClamAV packages and choose whether applications will call ClamScan, submit work to ClamD or use ClamOnAcc for on-access coverage.
  3. Configure the signature update process, including a monitored mirror or proxy if the server cannot reach the update service directly.
  4. Define detection handling before enabling production scans: quarantine location, permissions, retention, alert destination and an approved restoration process for false positives.
  5. Run representative scans against mail attachments, archives, large files and concurrent uploads while watching CPU, RAM, latency and disk I/O.
  6. Schedule full or targeted scans for data that is not covered by on-access monitoring, and review logs for failed scans and permission errors.

ClamAV is a strong choice when control and integration matter more than a turnkey console. It is less suitable when the team cannot own update health, alert triage, exclusions, incident response and lifecycle testing.

ESET Server Security for Linux

Current status and supported platforms

ESET maintains current Linux endpoint and server products. Its latest-version information lists Endpoint Antivirus for Linux 13.2.3.0, released June 30, 2026, with a Full Support designation. That entry confirms active Linux development, but it should not be treated as the server product’s exact package or feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ESET’s published Linux material lists Server Security for Linux coverage that includes Alma Linux 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 8 and 9, Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and RHEL 9. Verify the exact Server Security release against the image you run: point releases, architectures and kernel updates can change eligibility.

When ESET makes sense

Choose ESET when you want a commercial vendor to maintain the engine, provide support and fit Linux protection into a broader endpoint/server portfolio. A managed product can reduce the amount of local scripting required for policy, reporting and alert handling compared with a toolkit.

Before deployment, confirm the subscription scope, whether management is included, the supported kernel range and the behavior of on-access protection on your filesystem. Stage the agent on a non-production host, test backup and database workloads, and document exclusions narrowly rather than disabling protection globally.

Sophos Protection for Linux

Use the current agent, not the retired product

Sophos has moved Linux customers from Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux to Sophos Protection for Linux. Its support guidance says: “Customers using Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux must migrate to using the Sophos Protection for Linux agent accessed by using the Download Linux Server Installer option.” Older tutorials and copied installation scripts can therefore lead to an unsupported deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the matrix before installation

Sophos publishes a distribution and kernel support matrix. Check the exact server image, kernel build and architecture in that matrix before installing, then repeat the check during major kernel or distribution upgrades. A host can remain operational while silently falling outside the vendor’s supported combination.

Sophos is most compelling where the organization already operates a Sophos console and response process. Central policy and familiar alerting can outweigh small differences in scan performance. If you have no existing Sophos estate, compare the management workflow, licensing and migration obligations with the alternatives rather than choosing it solely because the word “Linux” appears in the product name.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux

Licensing and minimum resources

Defender for Endpoint on Linux requires a server license. Microsoft lists Defender for Servers Plan 1 or Plan 2, Defender for Endpoint for servers and Defender for Business servers as licensing routes. Confirm entitlement before installing an agent; a desktop license does not automatically cover a server workload.

Microsoft documents minimum resources of one CPU core, 2 GB of disk space and 1 GB of RAM. Those figures describe documented agent requirements, not a performance guarantee for a heavily used file server or database. Reserve additional capacity for scans, logs, updates and the protected workload.

Distribution coverage and a dated retirement

Microsoft documents support across major distributions including RHEL, Ubuntu LTS, Debian, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Oracle Linux, Amazon Linux, Rocky Linux, Alma Linux, Fedora and Mariner. Its support table includes Ubuntu LTS through 26.04. Amazon Linux 2 ARM64 support is scheduled to retire on October 31, 2026; plan a migration or architecture change before that date if you rely on that combination.

Fanotify is the critical compatibility issue

Linux real-time protection commonly relies on Fanotify. Microsoft gives this explicit warning:

“Warning — Running Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux alongside other Fanotify-based security solutions isn’t supported and may lead to unpredictable behavior, including system hangs.”

Inventory other Fanotify users before enabling Defender’s blocking mode. If another product must remain authoritative, use a documented passive configuration or a validated exception plan instead of running two blocking agents against the same files. Test boot, file access, backup restores and high-load behavior after every security-agent change.

Bitdefender and consumer Linux editions

Bitdefender states that it does not offer a consumer Linux antivirus, while its enterprise portfolio supports Linux-based environments. This distinction matters because a consumer download, even if it runs on a test machine, is not an appropriate substitute for a supported production-server agent. Evaluate an enterprise product only through its server support matrix, management model and licensing terms.

Real-time scanning versus scheduled scanning

On-access or real-time scanning inspects files as applications open, create or modify them. It can stop a malicious upload before another service reads it, but it introduces kernel hooks, file-access latency and interaction risks. It should be enabled only after identifying Fanotify consumers, backup behavior, temporary directories and latency-sensitive applications.

Scheduled or on-demand scanning runs at controlled times or when an administrator or application requests it. It is easier to isolate from peak traffic and can cover archival data that is rarely touched, but a malicious file may exist between scans. Many environments use both: on-access protection for upload zones and scheduled scans for repositories, backups or legacy data.

Do not assume that installing an agent automatically protects every mount. Network filesystems, containers, bind mounts, encrypted volumes and special virtual filesystems can have product-specific limitations. Confirm coverage in the chosen release documentation and include an alert for skipped or inaccessible paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A deployment plan that avoids common failures

  1. Document the host. Record distribution and point release, architecture, kernel, filesystems, service account permissions, mount points, CPU and RAM headroom, and any existing EDR, Fanotify or FAPolicyD component.
  2. Classify the data flow. Mark mail queues, upload directories, shared folders, build artifacts, backups and databases. Decide which locations need immediate inspection and which can be scanned on a schedule.
  3. Select a supported product. Match the inventory to the vendor matrix. For ClamAV, verify the 3 GiB planning recommendation and design the surrounding controls yourself. For ESET, Sophos or Defender, verify package, kernel and license eligibility.
  4. Stage in audit or passive mode. Collect detections, denied files, scan latency, CPU, memory, I/O and false positives before turning on blocking. Use representative archives and peak traffic, not only an idle test.
  5. Define updates and failure behavior. Monitor signature freshness, engine version, update errors and disk space. Decide whether a failed update blocks uploads, raises an alert or leaves the service in a known fallback mode.
  6. Set narrow exclusions. Exclude only paths required for a documented compatibility reason, and compensate with scheduled scans or integrity monitoring. Never exclude an entire data volume to hide performance problems.
  7. Test response. Verify quarantine permissions, alert delivery, operator ownership, restoration of a confirmed false positive and the escalation path for a real detection. Use safe test files approved for security validation rather than live malware.
  8. Re-test after changes. Kernel upgrades, distribution migrations, backup-agent changes and new Fanotify consumers can invalidate a previously safe configuration.

Performance, maintenance and licensing trade-offs

Decision area ClamAV Commercial agents
Control High local control over scripts, schedules, quarantine and integration More vendor-defined workflows, usually with policy and reporting services
Management effort Administrators own update checks, alerting, permissions and capacity tuning Vendor tooling can centralize policy and response, but introduces console and subscription dependencies
Resource planning At least 3 GiB RAM is recommended for the stated Linux server configuration; workload sizing remains your responsibility Each product has its own documented minimums and workload impact; Defender documents one CPU core, 2 GB disk and 1 GB RAM
Cost model Open-source project with no conventional per-server subscription in the way commercial products use one Per-server or subscription licensing varies by product and plan; exact prices are not established here and must be confirmed for your region and term
Lifecycle Package and signature maintenance follow the project and your distribution Support dates, kernel matrices and migration notices determine whether the agent remains supported

Measure scan impact with the services users actually care about. A file server should be tested with concurrent uploads and downloads; a mail gateway with attachment bursts; and a database host with backup, restore and transaction workloads. Watch I/O wait and application latency, not only average CPU utilization.

Which option should you choose?

Your situation Most defensible starting point Reason
You need an open-source scanner integrated into mail, upload or file-share workflows ClamAV Scriptable ClamScan/ClamD operation and Linux on-access support, with administrator-controlled policy
You want a supported commercial Linux server agent and do not already standardize on another console ESET Server Security for Linux Current Linux product maintenance and published coverage for several enterprise distributions; verify the exact server release
Your organization already manages endpoints with Sophos Sophos Protection for Linux Uses the existing vendor workflow, provided the distribution and kernel are in the current matrix
Your organization already licenses Microsoft Defender or Azure security services Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux Server licensing and centralized Microsoft operations can simplify policy and response
You have a narrow, hardened server with no untrusted file flow Risk-based choice; antivirus may be scheduled or omitted after security review Least privilege, patching, segmentation and integrity controls may deliver more value than always-on scanning for this workload

Final recommendation

Start with the workload and support matrix, not a brand ranking. Choose ClamAV when open-source control and integration are the priority. Choose ESET or Sophos when you need a supported commercial Linux agent and their management ecosystems fit your team. Choose Defender when your organization already owns the Microsoft server licensing and can avoid Fanotify conflicts. Whichever route you take, stage it, measure the real workload, monitor update health and revisit compatibility at every kernel or distribution change.
