Install The Wasteland by matching its release to your installed 7 Days to Die build, extracting each mod folder directly into the game’s Mods directory, installing the dependencies listed for that release, and launching with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) disabled. Multiplayer servers and every connecting client need the same compatible files.

The current main file shown on the maintained Nexus listing is 3.1 GB and was uploaded on 28 May 2026, but its upload date does not guarantee compatibility with your game build. Treat the release changelog and requirements as the authority before replacing an existing installation or save.

What you need before installing
The Wasteland is a total-conversion-style mod setup rather than a single file you can drop anywhere. Its loader expects a particular folder layout, its releases target different generations of 7 Days to Die, and its author requires EAC to be off. Gather these items first:
- A PC copy of 7 Days to Die installed through Steam.
- The exact game build currently installed, as shown by Steam.
- A Wasteland release whose changelog names that build.
- All dependencies listed for that specific release.
- Enough free storage for the download and the extracted folders. The current main download is listed at 3.1 GB before extraction.
- A backup of worlds and saves you care about, especially if you are changing from another overhaul version.
Do not select a file solely because it is the newest upload. The listing contains historical releases for multiple game generations, and a newer package can be incompatible with an older or newer game branch.

Check the game and Wasteland versions
Find your installed game build
Open Steam and look at the 7 Days to Die build installed in your library. If you use a beta branch, record that branch as well; a mod made for the normal release may not work on a beta build. Keep this information beside the Wasteland download page while you compare changelogs.
Choose by compatibility, not upload date
On the maintained Nexus listing, open the file and changelog that targets your build. Compare the game-build target, Wasteland version, dependency versions, file size, multiplayer notes, and whether optional components are bundled. The listing’s historical files do not all use the same dependency set.
| What to compare | Why it matters | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Game build | The mod’s assemblies and XML may rely on a specific game generation. | Use the build named by the selected release’s changelog. |
| Wasteland release | Different releases can change folder names, scripts, and requirements. | The listing contains several historical releases. |
| Dependencies | Missing libraries or frameworks can prevent loading or remove content. | Requirements are release-specific; the 2.6 changelog names five dependencies. |
| Download size | A partial or interrupted archive may appear to install but omit files. | The current main file is listed as 3.1 GB, uploaded 28 May 2026. |
| Multiplayer support | Every side of a connection must expose the same modded assets. | The author requires installation on both servers and clients. |
| Optional modules | Optional packages can add features but may introduce extra version constraints. | Check the selected release rather than assuming optional files are included. |
Download the correct archive
Use the maintained Wasteland listing on Nexus as the distribution point. Open the actual file or download control for the release you selected, not merely a page that displays an unzipped folder. A Fun Pimps support discussion notes that some Nexus prompts can lead to a location view without an obvious download action; return to the file’s download control if that happens.
After downloading, let the archive finish completely before extracting it. If your browser or archive utility reports an incomplete file, download it again rather than trying to repair a partial mod.
Install The Wasteland in Steam’s game folder
1. Open the local game directory
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click 7 Days to Die.
- Choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.
- Leave this directory open; it is the root into which the game’s
Modsfolder belongs.
This method avoids guessing between Steam library locations. The official installation guidance identifies the destination as 7_Days_To_DieMods.
2. Create the Mods folder if necessary
Look for a folder named Mods in the game directory. If it is not there, create a new folder with exactly that name, including the capital M. The official guide explicitly instructs users to create it when absent.

3. Extract the archive, not the archive file itself
Use your archive utility’s extract command and inspect the result before moving anything. You are looking for one or more mod folders, each containing its own files. Do not leave the downloaded ZIP, RAR, or 7z file as the only item in Mods; the game loads the extracted folder structure.
4. Place each mod folder directly under Mods
Move the extracted Wasteland folder or folders into the game’s Mods directory. The final shape should resemble:
7 Days To Die
└── Mods
├── WastelandModFolder
│ ├── ModInfo.xml
│ └── ...mod files...
├── DependencyFolderA
│ ├── ModInfo.xml
│ └── ...dependency files...
└── DependencyFolderB
├── ModInfo.xml
└── ...dependency files...
The folder names in the diagram are examples; use the names supplied by your selected archive. What matters is that ModInfo.xml is inside each mod folder, not several directories deeper.
5. Remove accidental double nesting
A common extraction result is ModsThe_WastelandThe_WastelandModInfo.xml. That extra layer prevents the loader from seeing the package. Open the innermost folder that contains ModInfo.xml and move that folder directly into Mods, or re-extract using the archive’s top-level folders correctly.
Install the release’s dependencies
Open the requirements or changelog for the exact Wasteland file you selected. Some downloads include dependencies, while others expect separate packages. Verify the contents instead of copying a dependency list from an older release.
Dependencies named for the 2.6 line
The 2.6 changelog lists the following components:
- SCore
- NPCmod
- FullautoLauncher
- RandomMainmenuBackground
- Quartz
This list is evidence for the 2.6 release line only. Older files list different versions, so do not install these five packages blindly on every Wasteland version. If the selected release supplies a version number, use that version; if it bundles a dependency, avoid creating a second copy with a conflicting folder.

Check each dependency’s folder
Every dependency that the release requires should end up as a separate mod folder directly below Mods, unless the release instructions explicitly specify another layout. Confirm that each one contains its own ModInfo.xml. Duplicate copies, obsolete versions, or an extra extraction level can be as disruptive as a missing dependency.
Disable Easy Anti-Cheat before launching
The Wasteland listing gives an explicit warning: EAC must be off. Disable Easy Anti-Cheat in the game’s launch choice or launcher prompt before starting a Wasteland session. If Steam presents more than one launch option, select the option that starts the game without EAC.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not treat this as an optional optimization. The mod’s own listing marks EAC as a requirement, so a session started with EAC enabled can fail to load the overhaul even when the folders are correct.
Launch a controlled test world
- Close any running 7 Days to Die process after finishing the file copy.
- Re-open the game with EAC disabled.
- Before loading a valuable save, start a temporary test world or use a disposable profile.
- Watch for the main menu and content that the selected Wasteland release is supposed to add.
- If the game reaches the menu but the new content is absent, exit without opening your primary save and use the troubleshooting checks below.
Testing separately protects an existing world from being opened under the wrong overhaul or dependency set.
Set up multiplayer correctly
The Wasteland listing states that it has to be installed on both servers and clients. A server-only installation is not sufficient, and a client-only installation will not make an unmodded server compatible.
Server checklist
- Install the same Wasteland release selected for the clients.
- Install the same release-specific dependencies and versions.
- Disable EAC for the server’s launch configuration.
- Verify the server’s
Modspath and everyModInfo.xml. - Restart the server after changing files.
Client checklist
- Use the same game build as the server whenever the release requires it.
- Mirror the server’s Wasteland folder and dependency set.
- Launch without EAC.
- Do not mix an older client archive with a newer server archive, even if both are called Wasteland.
When a client cannot join, compare the actual folder contents and release versions on both machines rather than replacing only the main Wasteland folder.

Verify the installation before troubleshooting
Use this short inspection before changing files:
- The game root is the directory opened through Steam’s Manage → Browse Local Files command.
- A folder named
Modsexists directly in that root. - The Wasteland folder is directly inside
Mods. - Each required dependency is directly inside
Mods. ModInfo.xmlappears inside every mod folder, not only in an outer wrapper folder.- The release changelog matches the installed game build.
- EAC is disabled for this launch.
- For multiplayer, server and client files are the same compatible release.
Troubleshoot common failures
The mod is not detected at all
Start with the path rather than reinstalling everything. Re-open the directory through Steam and confirm that the files are under 7_Days_To_DieMods, not in a neighboring Steam folder, Downloads folder, or a second game installation. Then inspect for an extra wrapper directory and locate ModInfo.xml. If the file is buried two levels below Mods, correct the nesting and restart the game.
The game starts, but Wasteland content is missing
Check the launch mode first: the listing requires EAC to be off. Next, compare the selected release’s requirements with the folders actually installed. A missing or wrong-version dependency can allow the base game to start while leaving overhaul content unavailable. Use the release’s changelog, not a generic dependency list from another Wasteland version.
The game crashes or reports errors immediately after an update
Stop launching the affected save and identify the new game build. The installation guidance warns that a mod made for one game version may not work on another. Re-check the Wasteland release and every dependency against the new build before changing files. Keep the old installation and a save backup until compatibility is clear; do not overwrite a working setup while experimenting.
A multiplayer client cannot join
Compare server and client side by side: game build, Wasteland release, dependency versions, folder names, and EAC state. The author requires installation on both sides, so an unmodded server or a client with a different historical archive will not be a valid match.
Recommended Free Tools
The download page shows files but no usable download
Return to the actual Nexus file page and use its download control. The Fun Pimps support discussion describes cases where a prompt can land users on an unzipped location without exposing the download action. Do not copy a browser preview or an incomplete temporary folder into Mods.
Only some features work
Partial functionality usually points to an omitted optional component or a dependency mismatch. Re-read the selected release notes and determine whether optional mods are bundled, separate, or version-bound. Remove duplicate obsolete folders before adding a corrected package so the loader does not encounter competing copies.

Updating The Wasteland safely
Back up saves first
Copy your save and world directories to a separate location before changing the overhaul or moving to a different game branch. The installation guide warns that version mismatches can damage saves. A backup gives you a rollback point if the new release changes data structures or fails during startup.
Change one compatibility variable at a time
Record the working game build, Wasteland release, and dependency versions. Then change only the item you intend to update. This makes it possible to identify whether a game update, a new overhaul archive, or a dependency caused the failure.

A release-selection worksheet
When several files appear on the listing, write down the following before downloading:
| Field | Your value | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Installed 7 Days to Die build | Record the Steam value | Must be named or supported by the Wasteland changelog. |
| Wasteland version | Record the file version | Choose the release that targets the build, not automatically the newest file. |
| Archive size | Compare with the listing | A mismatch can indicate an incomplete download; the current main file is listed at 3.1 GB. |
| Required dependencies | Copy the release’s list | Install every required item once and at the stated version. |
| Optional components | Mark bundled or separate | Add only what the selected release supports. |
| Multiplayer requirement | Server and client owners identified | Mirror the complete compatible set on both sides. |
What a successful installation looks like
A successful setup has a single game root opened from Steam, a Mods directory at that root, and one correctly nested folder for Wasteland plus each required dependency. Every mod folder exposes ModInfo.xml at its top level. The selected release matches the installed game build, EAC is disabled, and a disposable test world loads before you risk a primary save. In multiplayer, the server and every client use the same compatible release and dependency set.
The version warning is the most important long-term rule: re-check compatibility whenever 7 Days to Die updates or you change branches. The Wasteland listing, its release changelog, and the official Fun Pimps installation guidance are the references to consult immediately before downloading or updating because file availability and requirements can change.
