For most small product brands, the strongest practical starting point is a destructible or tamper-evident label paired with a unique QR code for every unit. The label reveals opening or removal, while the serialized code lets your brand check a specific item against records you control. Add a holographic feature when staff or shoppers need a quick visual check; consider NFC or RFID when cloud analytics, traceability, or controlled supply-chain handling justify the extra cost and setup.
No label makes counterfeiting impossible. Security comes from the combination of a securely attached physical feature, a one-time identity, a verification process, and a defined response when scans or seals look suspicious.

What a small brand should buy first
Start by identifying the failure you need to catch. If your main concern is opened, refilled, or swapped packaging, use a seal that breaks or leaves visible VOID evidence when removed. If counterfeiters can sell unopened-looking copies, add a unique serial number or QR code linked to a verification page. If products move through distributors or several warehouses, add batch, destination, NFC, or RFID data so you can record custody and movement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Destructible or tamper-evident construction: the sticker tears, flakes, or leaves a VOID message when someone lifts it.
- One serialized QR code per unit: each code is issued once and checked by a service your brand controls.
- Optional overt feature: a hologram or specialty print gives a person at a counter a quick visual cue.
Layering matters because the features answer different questions. A seal can show that a package was disturbed but cannot, by itself, tell you whether an unopened package is genuine. A QR code can identify a record but can be copied onto many fake packages unless the system detects reuse and another physical feature supports the check.
Compare anti-counterfeit label options
| Option | Best for | What the customer or worker does | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamper-evident or destructible label | Detecting opening, refill, or removal | Inspect the seal and surrounding package | Low-friction visual evidence of interference | Does not authenticate an unopened item; adhesive and placement are critical |
| Holographic security label | Overt deterrence and fast retail checks | Tilt the label and inspect the optical effect | Distinctive visual feature that is hard to reproduce with ordinary printing | Hologram artwork can still be copied; pair it with serialization or tamper evidence |
| Serialized QR label | Unit-level consumer or distributor checks | Scan with a smartphone camera | Low hardware friction and a unique identity when backed by a server | A static or duplicated code can be copied; issuance records and scan rules are required |
| NFC smart label | Tap authentication, analytics, and traceability | Tap with an NFC-capable phone or reader | Connects a physical item to cloud records and scan data | Higher unit cost, encoding, onboarding, and compatibility considerations |
| RFID or supply-chain tag | Inventory and controlled-chain movement | Use an RFID reader and integrated system | Automated reading of many items and movement events | Reader infrastructure and process integration add complexity; usually excessive for a tiny direct-to-consumer run |
Tamper-evident is not tamper-proof
Tamper-evident means an attempt to open, remove, or transfer the label should leave a visible sign: a broken seal, a VOID pattern, separated layers, or a destructible face that comes off in pieces. It is evidence, not an absolute barrier. A determined person may replace the whole package, cover the seal, or obtain a look-alike label.
Tamper-proof suggests that tampering cannot happen. That is not a realistic promise for a label. Use “tamper-evident” in customer instructions and describe exactly what people should see. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) warns that a tag’s ability to authenticate products “will largely depend on how securely the tag is attached to the product.” A premium material is ineffective if it can be lifted cleanly from a smooth coating or moved to another unit.

When a destructible label is the right choice
Choose destructible film or a VOID-style seal for bottles, jars, cartons, boxes, and other packages where opening should disturb a defined closure. Specify the substrate, adhesive, dimensions, and the surface coating when ordering. A label intended for an uncoated carton may fail on varnished paper, powder-coated metal, oily plastic, or textured glass.
What the customer should be told
Give a short instruction near the product or on the verification page: “Check that the seal is intact. If it shows VOID, tears, or appears lifted, do not use the product; contact us with the serial number.” Avoid telling customers that an intact sticker alone proves authenticity.
How a QR label can prove identity
A QR code proves useful only when it is a unique identifier connected to a controlled verification service. The code should not contain the same public text on every package. Instead, issue a different random or unpredictable token for each unit, store its status in your database, and print that token in the QR symbol.

Required parts of a secure QR implementation
- Unit-level issuance: generate one code for each item, not one code for an entire product line or batch.
- Protected records: store the token, product or SKU, batch, production date, intended market, and status in a system your brand controls.
- Verification endpoint: resolve scans through a page that can be updated or disabled without reprinting labels.
- Scan rules: distinguish a normal first scan from repeated scans, impossible travel, or a code that was never issued.
- Human-readable backup: print a short serial beneath the QR so support staff can work when a camera cannot read the symbol.
A successful scan means that the code is recognized by your service. It does not prove that the contents are genuine if a counterfeiter has copied a valid code onto another package. Pair the code with a physical seal, a hologram, or a supply-chain record, and investigate duplicate or geographically implausible scans.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Designing the customer result
Show a clear result rather than a generic “valid” message. A first scan can display the product name, a partial serial, and the date the code was first checked. A repeat scan can say that the code has already been checked and ask the customer to confirm where it was bought. An invalid or disabled code should provide a support channel and advise the customer not to use the product when safety is involved. Do not expose personal data or an unguessable database identifier that can be harvested.
Making the symbol scannable
Leave adequate quiet space around the QR, maintain strong contrast, and avoid placing it across a fold, seam, curve, or transparent film. Test the smallest planned size with inexpensive and older phones, under store lighting and on a moving parcel. A code that works only in a design proof is not a verification system.
What holographic labels add
Holograms create an overt visual cue: the image or color changes as the label is tilted. HP’s security guidance describes tilt effects and QR validation, while Avery Dennison materials describe holograms and other difficult-to-copy constructions. These effects help a cashier, distributor, or customer notice an obvious mismatch without opening an app.
They are not a complete authentication method. A counterfeit producer can photograph or imitate a popular hologram design, and a genuine holographic sticker can be transferred if its adhesive permits removal. Use a custom pattern, serial number, or microtext where appropriate, and combine the hologram with a unit-level QR or a destructible construction. Tell customers what feature to look for; “has a shiny sticker” is too vague to be useful.

NFC smart labels
NFC labels contain a chip that a compatible phone can read by tapping. The chip can hold or resolve a unique identifier, open a cloud verification page, and generate scan data without requiring the customer to frame a camera image. This is attractive for premium goods, repeat purchases, warranty registration, and analytics.

Plan for encoding and onboarding before ordering. Decide whether the chip is locked after encoding, how the identifier is associated with a unit record, and what happens on phones with NFC disabled or unsupported. Keep a printed serial or QR fallback for accessibility and compatibility. NFC does not prevent cloning by itself; the cloud service, chip security features, and physical attachment determine the practical protection.
RFID tags
RFID is most useful when authorized staff need to read many items or record movement through warehouses, manufacturing stations, or controlled distribution. Readers, antennas, software integration, and operating procedures add cost and complexity. For a small brand shipping individual orders to consumers, a QR label is usually easier to deploy. For pallets, cases, or high-value products moving through known checkpoints, RFID may provide a worthwhile automated record.
Choose the layer by threat
| Threat or failure | Minimum useful layer | Stronger configuration | Operational question |

| Package is opened and refilled | Destructible or VOID seal | Seal plus serialized QR | Can a buyer see a broken seal before use? |
| Unopened-looking fake is sold | Serialized QR with server check | QR plus hologram and tamper evidence | How are duplicate scans flagged? |
| Goods are diverted to an unintended market | Batch and destination records | NFC or RFID movement events plus QR consumer check | Who reviews an unexpected-country scan? |
| Distributor needs rapid visual screening | Custom holographic or specialty-print feature | Hologram, serial, and controlled verification page | What exact optical feature should staff inspect? |
| High-value units need analytics and lifecycle records | Serialized QR or NFC | NFC/cloud identity with tamper-evident attachment | Can support see first scan, ownership, and status? |
Test the label on the real package
Run an application trial before committing to a production run. EUIPO specifically identifies secure attachment and the production stage as implementation factors. Test the actual label, adhesive, ink, and substrate combination rather than relying on a supplier sample made with different materials.
- Apply labels at the intended production step and record the surface condition, temperature, and curing time.
- Check adhesion after normal handling, stacking, packing, opening, and returns processing.
- Expose samples to the moisture, condensation, oils, abrasion, and temperature changes expected in storage and transit.
- Attempt removal from several edges. Confirm that the promised VOID or destructible effect appears and that a removed label cannot be cleanly reused.
- Scan the QR from realistic distances, angles, lighting, and phone models after rubbing or flexing the package.
- Inspect whether printing, laminate glare, folds, or curved surfaces hide the serial or reduce scan reliability.
- Document a pass/fail standard and quarantine labels or packages that do not meet it.
Build the verification workflow before printing
A label is only one part of the control system. Assign ownership for these steps before your first order:
- Generate: create a random serial or token for every unit and prevent accidental reuse.
- Associate: link each token to SKU, batch, production location, intended market, and any required warranty or expiry data.
- Print and apply: keep issuance records tied to the production lot and verify that the correct code is on the correct unit.
- Activate: decide whether a code becomes valid at printing, packaging, shipment, or first sale. Activation timing affects stolen or diverted inventory.
- Present: provide a fast mobile page with plain-language status, product details, and a support route.
- Monitor: log first scans, repeat scans, invalid tokens, and unusual locations or timing.
- Respond: define who investigates, how a code is disabled, what distributors are told, and when customers receive a replacement or refund.
Do not promise that a scan confirms authenticity unless your issuance records and physical controls support that conclusion. A verification page should explain the limits of the check without teaching counterfeiters how to bypass it.
Production, order quantities, and records
Serialization can require a change to the production stage. Someone must generate codes, reconcile printed output, destroy misprints, and confirm that unused codes cannot be activated later. Keep a controlled export or backup of issuance records and limit administrative access.

Order minimums vary by material, printing method, and service. Teal Packaging’s current anti-counterfeit packaging page advertises a 50-unit minimum for its custom service (accessed 2026). Treat that as a supplier-specific figure, not a market-wide minimum; confirm current quantity breaks, encoding fees, artwork charges, lead times, and recurring platform costs before purchase.
Budget for more than the sticker: artwork and tooling, variable-data printing, serialization software or cloud hosting, application labor, failed-label waste, customer support, and replacement stock can exceed the face value of the label. Supplier capabilities, prices, stock, and minimums can change, so obtain a current written quote.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compliance and product-category requirements
Anti-counterfeit features do not replace regulatory identification. Requirements differ by country and category. In the United States, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidance for children’s products generally calls for tracking marks that are visible and legible and permanently affixed to the product and its packaging “to the extent practicable.” The guidance describes manufacturer or importer identity, production location and date, and identifying process or source information, subject to product-specific requirements and practicability.
Keep required tracking information separate from a removable promotional sticker when the rule requires permanence. Check the regulation for your product and destination market; cosmetics, food, medicines, electronics, toys, and exported goods can have different obligations.

The hologram is treated as proof
Why it fails: a copied or transferred holographic design can look convincing. Fix: pair it with serialization, a destructible bond, or controlled supply-chain records, and publish a specific visual inspection instruction.
Customers cannot scan consistently
Why it fails: glare, low contrast, tiny symbols, folds, or poor network handling interrupt the journey. Fix: enlarge or relocate the code, preserve quiet space, test multiple phones, and provide a human-readable serial and support fallback.
Valid scans are ignored
Why it fails: nobody owns alert review, so duplicate scans become background noise. Fix: set thresholds, assign an owner, document escalation, and record the outcome of investigations.
Production cannot reconcile labels
Why it fails: misprints, unused codes, or rework are not recorded. Fix: use controlled issuance batches, scan or verify codes at application, quarantine exceptions, and disable lost or exposed identifiers.
A practical starter specification
For a small brand with moderate risk and no existing authentication infrastructure, specify a destructible or VOID label sized for the actual closure, with a high-contrast unique QR code and a human-readable serial. Host the scan destination on a mobile-friendly verification page, record each issued code against its batch, and define first-scan, repeat-scan, invalid-code, and suspicious-location responses. Add a custom holographic feature when visual screening at retail matters. Move to NFC when tap analytics or lifecycle records justify encoding and support work; use RFID when staff need automated multi-item reads through controlled facilities.
Before launch, prove three things on real packages: removal leaves the promised evidence, ordinary customers can scan the code, and your team can explain and act on every verification result. Those tests, rather than a decorative label alone, determine whether the system helps protect your brand.
