For files saved on your phone or SD card, choose a local-file player such as Musicolet or Poweramp. For music alongside videos and network streams, VLC is a practical fit. If you want subscription-streaming access, use a streaming service such as YouTube Music—but its offline downloads are not the same as music files you own and store.
These are ten options to consider, not a tested ranking: Android Authority’s January 21, 2026 comparison lists the apps below, but does not establish a measured winner. Match an app to your listening needs, then check its current Play listing for features, availability, and pricing.

Choose by music source first
| What you want to play | Good starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| MP3, FLAC, or other files stored on your phone or SD card | Musicolet or Poweramp | Both are presented as local music-player options. Musicolet’s listing specifically describes playback from internal storage or an SD card. |
| Audio, video, and network streams in one app | VLC for Android | VideoLAN lists support for audio and video files and network streams, plus a music player and media database. |
| A subscription catalog and service-managed offline listening | YouTube Music | It appears in Android Authority’s comparison as a streaming option. Service downloads remain tied to the service and may require a paid subscription. |
Local players and streaming services address different needs. A local player works with audio files available to the app on your device; a streaming service gives access to a catalog under its service terms. Do not assume that downloading a track in a streaming app creates an ordinary MP3 or FLAC file you can move to another player.

1. Musicolet: local files and Android Auto
Musicolet is a strong starting point if your collection is already stored on your phone or SD card. Its Google Play listing says it organizes and plays stored audio, but does not search for music online, stream it, or download it. That makes it a local-library player rather than a discovery or subscription app.
The listing also describes Android Auto controls for music, queues, playlists, folders, and the library. If you need a player for an existing collection in the car, those controls are a useful reason to consider it.
2. VLC for Android: music, video, and network streams
VLC suits listeners who want more than a dedicated music library. VideoLAN describes it as a player for audio and video files as well as network streams, and lists a music player, media database, equalizer, and filters.

That broad role is its distinguishing use case here. The available evidence does not establish that VLC offers a better dedicated music-library experience than the other apps.
3. Poweramp: configurable playback and USB DAC support
Poweramp is worth considering if you want configurable equalization or plan to use an external USB DAC. Its official page lists support for a broad range of formats, equalization options, and external USB DACs.
High-resolution output is not guaranteed by the app alone: Poweramp says available output depends on the device, ROM, and Android version. A DAC is optional, not a requirement for ordinary music playback, and compatibility should be checked against your specific phone and setup.

7. Plexamp
Plexamp is included among the comparison’s options. The details available here do not establish its current requirements or how its features fit your setup; review its official listing before committing.
8. Pulsar
Pulsar is also listed. Verify its current features, availability, and pricing in its official app listing, particularly if you need a specific playback or in-car feature.

Symfonium appears in the comparison, but the available evidence does not substantiate particular current features or costs. Use its current official listing to determine whether it supports your intended music source and playback setup.
10. YouTube Music
YouTube Music is the streaming-oriented option in this selection. It is a better fit for listeners who want a service catalog than for someone looking for a general-purpose player for a folder of files. Offline access through a streaming service is governed by that service and is not equivalent to keeping ordinary music files on your device.

Android Authority’s January 2026 article also discusses GoneMAD Music Player and USB Audio Player Pro, as well as Music Player & MP3 Player, Omnia Music Player, Simple Music Player, Stellio, and Pi Music Player. They are not in this ten-app selection, and the evidence available here does not establish their current features, availability, or pricing. Check each app’s official listing if one catches your eye.
Quick Recap
How to narrow the list
- Identify the source. If your music is stored as files, start with a local player. If you want a subscription catalog, choose a streaming service instead.
- Check where you listen. For Android Auto controls, Musicolet’s listing specifically describes support for library browsing, queues, playlists, folders, and music control. For video or network streams as well as audio, consider VLC.
- Decide whether audio controls matter. Poweramp documents configurable equalization and external USB DAC support. Confirm that its output behavior matches your device before relying on high-resolution playback.
- Verify current terms and compatibility. App features, Play Store availability, and prices can change. Check the current official listing for your region and Android version, especially before paying or moving a large library.
