For most ZimaOS owners, compare PhotoPrism, Immich and LibrePhotos first. PhotoPrism is the easiest starting point because it is published in the ZimaOS App Store for ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade and ZimaCube and has the clearest documented deployment guidance. Immich is the strongest first trial if automatic phone backup and a Google Photos-like mobile workflow are your priority. LibrePhotos suits owners who value local, open-source operation, face/place/event organization and broad media-format support.
None is a perfect feature-for-feature Google Photos clone. Your choice should be based on how your phones upload, how well your own library searches, which formats you keep, and whether your ZimaOS system can be backed up and maintained reliably.

What a private replacement changes
With a cloud service, the provider supplies storage, redundancy, account recovery, indexing infrastructure, mobile uploads and remote access. A ZimaOS installation moves those jobs to your home server. The applications can keep your originals and catalog on local disks, but you become responsible for the disks, backups, upgrades, user accounts and secure access from outside your home.
Local storage is not the same as a backup
A photo library on one ZimaBoard disk has one failure point. A second disk in the same enclosure can protect against some drive failures, but it does not protect against theft, fire, accidental deletion or a damaged server. Keep at least one additional copy on separate hardware, and preferably one copy away from the home. Test that you can restore a sample of originals and their metadata before deleting anything from the old service.
Indexing does not alter every original
Photo applications normally create an index containing labels, dates, locations, faces, thumbnails and other derived data. The index can be rebuilt, but rebuilding may take time and face or event assignments may not reproduce exactly. Treat the original photo and video files as the irreplaceable data; treat the index as valuable convenience data that also deserves backup when you have invested in curation.

PhotoPrism: the clearest ZimaOS path
PhotoPrism describes itself as “an AI-powered, privacy-first app for browsing, organizing, and sharing photos and videos.” Its strongest advantage for a ZimaOS owner is not a single feature; it is the amount of deployment guidance available for this platform. PhotoPrism is listed in the ZimaOS App Store for ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade and ZimaCube.
Hardware and database guidance
The official ZimaOS guidance recommends a 64-bit system with at least two CPU cores and 3 GB of RAM for a good experience. Those figures are a baseline from the project documentation, not a promise of a particular indexing speed or library size. Large RAW and video collections, simultaneous users and background analysis can require more headroom.
The ZimaOS package stores the index in SQLite by default. PhotoPrism warns that SQLite is not a good choice when you need scalability and high performance, and recommends considering MariaDB for larger libraries. Choose the database before a major import when possible; changing later adds migration and backup work.

Search and organization
PhotoPrism combines filters for labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality. That lets you narrow a large library using several properties at once instead of relying only on folder names. Its AI-oriented indexing can be useful when dates and directories are inconsistent, but the quality of labels and faces still needs checking against your own photos.

PhotoPrism includes documented guidance for a Google Photos migration. Use that as a map for exporting originals and metadata, then import a small, representative subset first. Include phone photos, edited images, videos, RAW files, HEIC files, albums and items with locations. Confirm dates, orientation, captions, locations and album membership before committing to the full library.
When PhotoPrism is the sensible choice
- You want an application already published in the ZimaOS App Store for your ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade or ZimaCube.
- You prefer a web-centered library with detailed filtering.
- You need a documented migration route from Google Photos.
- You are willing to move from the default SQLite setup to MariaDB when your library or usage grows.
Immich: the phone-first candidate
Immich is widely identified in self-hosting directories as a leading self-hosted Google Photos alternative. Its practical differentiator is a phone-first backup and library experience: the mobile application is intended to upload new images from your devices and make those images available in the same self-hosted library.
Why families test Immich first
If the habit you need to preserve is “take a picture, let the phone back it up automatically, then browse it on any device,” Immich should be your first hands-on trial. That workflow reduces the largest source of migration failure: a server that stores old archives but does not reliably receive new photos.
Test uploads while the phone is on Wi-Fi and cellular data, with the screen locked, with the application backgrounded and after a temporary network outage. Check whether originals, motion or Live Photo components, edits and timestamps arrive as you expect. These observations are more useful than a generic feature checklist because mobile operating systems can suspend background work.
Rapid release cycle means extra verification
Immich changes rapidly. Verify the current release status, ZimaOS package and hardware requirements immediately before installation. Do not assume that a guide written for an older release describes the current database layout, backup procedure or mobile permissions. Keep a copy of the release notes and the configuration used for your deployment so that an upgrade can be reversed or restored.

When Immich is the sensible choice
- Automatic phone backup is more important than a highly curated desktop catalog.
- Several family members need a mobile-centered workflow.
- You can tolerate checking release notes and adapting maintenance steps as the project evolves.
- You will validate sharing, search and media-format behavior with your own devices before moving the complete library.
LibrePhotos: local, open-source cataloging
LibrePhotos is presented as “Self-hosted · Open source · MIT licensed.” Its introduction says, “Your data is never sent to or stored on a 3rd party server.” The software scans folders already on your machine and identifies faces, places and events, while keeping photos and metadata local.
Format and organization coverage
LibrePhotos’ feature comparison marks support for photos, video, RAW, HEIC, Live Photos and x265 video. The project also lists Live Photos, RAW+JPEG variant handling and timeline views. Those capabilities make it attractive when your collection includes camera originals alongside phone media and you want one local catalog.
What to verify before adoption
LibrePhotos is a strong candidate for owners comfortable with community-maintained software, but do not infer a particular mobile-upload or sharing experience from its format list. Test folder scanning, duplicate handling, RAW+JPEG grouping, Live Photo playback, face grouping and event timelines on a copy of your library. Confirm how users and shared albums behave before inviting family members.

- You want an open-source, locally operated catalog and are comfortable maintaining it.
- Faces, places, events and timeline views matter more than matching every Google Photos mobile feature.
- Your library contains RAW, HEIC, Live Photos or x265 video and you want those formats represented in one system.
- You prefer scanning an existing folder tree rather than redesigning where originals live.
Compare the features that affect daily use
Automatic phone backup
Ask whether the application can upload every new item without manual exports, whether it preserves the original file, and how it reports failures. Immich starts with the clearest phone-first story. For PhotoPrism and LibrePhotos, confirm the current mobile-upload method or use a separate synchronized intake folder, then verify that the server has indexed each upload.
Search, labels and faces
Search quality is personal. Create a test set containing people, pets, receipts, screenshots, landscapes, dark images, duplicates and pictures with missing dates. In PhotoPrism, try combined labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality filters. In LibrePhotos, inspect face, place, event and timeline results. In Immich, test the current search and recognition features in the release you install. Record false matches and missed items; no published comparative accuracy figure establishes a universal winner.
Originals, metadata and edits
Keep originals in a directory you can copy independently of the application. Determine whether edits are non-destructive, whether captions and locations are written back to files or stored only in the database, and how an export reconstructs your albums. A self-hosted library is safest when you can read the originals and important metadata without the application running.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Video, RAW, HEIC and Live Photos
Use real samples from your collection, not empty test files. Include long and short videos, different codecs, RAW+JPEG pairs, HEIC images and both components of Live Photos. Check thumbnail generation, playback in the web client, download behavior and storage growth. LibrePhotos explicitly lists these categories in its feature comparison; the behavior of the other two should be confirmed for the versions you deploy.
Users and sharing
Decide whether each person needs a private library, a shared space or read-only access. Test invitations, password changes, link expiration, revocation and whether a shared link exposes original-resolution downloads. Do not publish the server directly to the internet until you have enabled encrypted access and understand account recovery.
Migration plan that minimizes risk
Move in stages. The following sequence works regardless of which application you select.
- Inventory the source. Record the approximate number of files, total bytes, phones and cameras, formats, albums, shared albums and items with location or face data. Identify duplicates and files that exist only in the cloud.
- Prepare ZimaOS storage. Create a dedicated photo location with enough free space for originals, thumbnails, database growth and temporary imports. Do not count a single disk as a backup.
- Install one application. For PhotoPrism, open the ZimaOS App Store and select the package for your system. For Immich or LibrePhotos, verify that the current ZimaOS package or supported deployment method matches your hardware before importing anything.
- Set access and volumes deliberately. Map the originals directory, application data and database storage to locations included in your backup plan. Keep application data separate from originals so a reinstall does not hide what must be restored.
- Import a representative sample. Start with a few hundred or thousand items covering every format and device. Check dates, orientation, locations, albums, faces, video playback and download of an untouched original.
- Configure phone intake. Enable the selected mobile backup workflow, then create a new test photo on each phone. Confirm upload, server indexing, duplicate handling and behavior after a failed or interrupted connection.
- Export or copy the remainder. For a Google Photos migration, follow PhotoPrism’s documented migration path when using PhotoPrism. For other applications, preserve the exported originals and metadata separately and import in batches.
- Verify before deleting. Compare file counts and byte totals, open random originals, inspect videos and confirm that critical albums and dates survived. Keep the old copy until a complete backup and restore test succeeds.
- Document the installation. Note the application version, database type, storage paths, user accounts, backup schedule and upgrade procedure. This record is essential when the server needs to be rebuilt.
ZimaOS deployment and maintenance checklist
Before installation
- Confirm the host is 64-bit. PhotoPrism’s documented baseline is at least two CPU cores and 3 GB of RAM for a good experience.
- Measure available storage for originals, generated thumbnails, database files and future growth.
- Decide where an independent backup will live and how you will test restoration.
- Choose whether PhotoPrism’s default SQLite index is adequate or whether your expected scale justifies MariaDB.
- Check the current package and release notes for Immich or LibrePhotos rather than relying on an old tutorial.
During normal operation
- Watch free space and database growth; a full volume can interrupt uploads and indexing.
- Back up originals and application data on a schedule that matches how much new material you can afford to lose.
- Apply updates during a maintenance window and keep a restorable copy before changing the database or application image.
- Review user accounts and shared links periodically, especially after a phone or family member is removed.
- Test a restore at least once after the initial deployment and after major storage or database changes.
Remote access and privacy pitfalls
Keeping files at home does not automatically make them private. A weak password, exposed administrative port, outdated application or compromised phone can disclose the same library you were trying to remove from the cloud.
- Use unique, long passwords and enable multi-factor authentication when the application and access method support it.
- Prefer an encrypted private network or a well-maintained reverse proxy over forwarding an unprotected application port.
- Separate administrator accounts from everyday browsing accounts.
- Limit shared links, set expiration where available and revoke links that are no longer needed.
- Keep ZimaOS, the photo application, database and phone operating systems updated, while reading release notes for breaking changes.
- Encrypt backup media when it leaves your home.
Troubleshooting common failures
Photos appear on disk but not in the library
Check that the application is scanning the directory actually containing the files, that the container or app has permission to read it, and that an indexing job has completed. Look for unsupported or partially copied files. Import a single known-good JPEG to distinguish a path problem from a format problem.

Reconnect after a temporary outage and check whether failed items are retried rather than silently skipped.

Search results are incomplete
Allow indexing to finish, then inspect whether the missing files have readable dates and metadata. Re-run or repair the index only after backing up the database. Face and label recognition can miss unusual lighting, motion, screenshots or very small faces; correct important results manually and retain the originals.
Videos or Live Photos do not play
Check the codec and companion-file relationship. Confirm that the web client supports the format and that a reverse proxy is not imposing a file-size or timeout limit. Download the original directly to determine whether playback failure is in the browser rather than in storage.
An upgrade causes errors
Stop making new imports, preserve the current application data and database, and read the release-specific rollback or migration instructions. Do not delete the old container or database until you have confirmed that the upgraded instance can browse and export originals.

How to choose in 15 minutes
- Choose PhotoPrism if documented ZimaOS deployment, detailed web search and a Google Photos migration path are your first requirements.
- Choose Immich if automatic phone backup is the deciding feature and you are prepared to verify a fast-changing release on your hardware.
- Choose LibrePhotos if local open-source operation, face/place/event organization and support for RAW, HEIC, Live Photos and x265 video outweigh a polished phone-first workflow.
- If two choices remain, run both against the same representative sample instead of importing your entire archive into either one.
The trial should end with a restore test, not just a successful thumbnail grid. Export several originals, verify metadata and albums, simulate a phone upload, and confirm that another person can use the sharing controls you intend to rely on.
The practical verdict
PhotoPrism is the safest default recommendation for a ZimaOS owner who wants the most directly documented path. Immich deserves the first test when the household experience depends on effortless mobile backup. LibrePhotos is the better fit for an owner who prioritizes local, open-source stewardship and broad format-aware organization. Whichever you select, the privacy benefit comes from controlling the files and securing the server—not from installing an app and forgetting about backups, upgrades or remote access.
