Instead of holding a crypto token that represents stock exposure, you place a dollar- or share-based order through a broker that records your fractional interest in its custody and account system. The strongest documented choices for U.S. investors are Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers, and Robinhood, but they differ materially in eligible securities, minimums, fees, execution, corporate-action treatment, voting rights, and transferability.
Choose the broker whose fractional-share rules match the securities and account you actually plan to use. A low minimum is useful, but it does not by itself tell you whether a ticker is eligible, whether you can transfer the position, or what rights attach to the fraction.

What you are buying: a fractional share, not a crypto representation
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes a tokenized security, in its January 28, 2026 statement, as a security represented by a crypto asset whose ownership records are maintained in whole or in part on crypto networks. A token may be issued by the company whose security is represented, or by a third party that holds securities and issues tokens linked to those holdings. The legal and economic arrangements therefore depend on the specific token program.
An ordinary fractional share is simply less than one whole share. The SEC Investor Bulletin dated November 9, 2020 says investors can generally enter orders by dollar amount or by share amount. The broker keeps the ownership and allocation records in its brokerage and custody infrastructure rather than on a public crypto network.

The distinction does not make every brokerage fraction identical to a whole share. The SEC warns that voting rights depend on the broker, fees can apply, liquidity is not guaranteed, and fractional positions generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage in kind. Read the broker’s customer agreement and fractional-share disclosures before assuming that a fraction has the same rights as a whole share.
SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce summarized the technology point on July 9, 2025: “As powerful as blockchain technology is, it does not have magical abilities to transform the nature of the underlying asset.” A token can change the way a claim is recorded or traded; it does not automatically create the same ownership, custody, voting, or redemption rights as a conventional brokerage position.

Fidelity: broad mainstream U.S. coverage and dollar-based orders
What it supports
Fidelity says fractional or dollar-based orders are available for eligible NMS exchange-listed stocks and ETFs. This makes it a natural fit when you want to invest a fixed dollar amount rather than calculate a whole-share quantity. A security must still pass Fidelity’s eligibility rules; an NMS listing alone is not a promise that every ticker can be purchased fractionally.
Costs and execution questions
Fidelity advertises $0 commissions for online U.S. stock and most ETF trades. Regulatory assessment fees may still reduce the proceeds of a sale. The cited information does not establish a universal fractional minimum, the complete set of supported order types, or the execution treatment for every fractional order. Review the order preview for the ticker, side, quantity, estimated value, and any displayed fee before submitting.
When Fidelity is the better fit
Consider Fidelity if your priority is a large mainstream selection of U.S. stocks and ETFs, dollar-based orders, and a conventional brokerage relationship. Before committing, confirm dividend handling, dividend-reinvestment availability, corporate-action processing, voting procedures, and whether fractional positions can be liquidated automatically when you close the account. Those details are account- and security-specific in the cited material.

Charles Schwab: a $1 entry point for most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs
What it supports
Charles Schwab states that Stock Slices are available for most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs and that investors can start with as little as $1. “Most” is not the same as every listing: check the eligible-security list or search result for the exact ticker before funding an order.

Ownership and trading limitations
Schwab’s Stock Slices terms say you directly own the slices after purchase and pay no commissions on those trades. The same terms warn that fractional orders may carry different rights from whole-share orders and may not qualify for price improvement. In practical terms, a slice gives you an allocated fractional interest, but the order may execute under rules that differ from a whole-share order.
When Schwab is the better fit
Schwab is compelling when a very low starting amount and broad U.S.-listed coverage matter more than international access. Use the order screen and terms to check how dividends, splits, mergers, and voting communications are handled for the specific position; the cited terms do not establish one universal rule for every corporate action.
Interactive Brokers: the broadest documented international selection
Markets and security count
Interactive Brokers supports fractional trading in eligible U.S., Canadian, and European stocks and ETFs. Its 2026 fact sheet reported 24,047 eligible U.S., Canadian, or European stocks and ETFs as of July 23, 2026. That is a dated count, not a permanent guarantee; eligibility can change as listings, market rules, and broker policies change.
Minimum and pricing models
The same fact sheet lists a $0.01 minimum for assessed non-recurring fractional-share trades. “Assessed” matters: the minimum applies to trades to which the broker applies that charge, not necessarily every recurring investment or every account activity. Interactive Brokers offers IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro, with different pricing models. Check which model your account uses and read the displayed commission, exchange, regulatory, and currency-conversion charges before placing an order.

Robinhood: an app-first route limited to eligible NMS securities
What it supports
Robinhood supports fractional shares of eligible NMS securities listed on national exchanges, including stocks and ETFs. OTC stocks are excluded. If the security trades over the counter, or if Robinhood has not enabled fractional trading for that listing, a fractional order is not available even when a whole-share market exists elsewhere.
How to evaluate the app-first option
An app can make dollar-based investing straightforward, but convenience does not remove the need to inspect execution and account terms. Before buying, check the quote, spread information, order type offered for the fraction, any displayed regulatory charge, and the broker’s rules for dividends, splits, voting, and account transfers. The cited Robinhood information establishes the NMS eligibility boundary but does not state a universal minimum or a complete fee and rights schedule.
What to compare before opening or funding an account
1. Legal interest and custody
With a conventional fractional-share account, your broker records an interest in less than one share and maintains the related custody records. Ask whether the broker describes you as owning the fractional interest directly, how whole shares and fractions are pooled or allocated, and what happens if the account closes. Schwab’s Stock Slices terms expressly describe direct ownership after purchase; the other cited summaries do not provide equivalent wording, so read their agreements rather than assuming identical rights.
2. Ticker and ETF eligibility
Start with your intended list of securities, not a broker’s headline count. Fidelity focuses on eligible NMS exchange-listed stocks and ETFs; Schwab covers most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs; Interactive Brokers includes eligible U.S., Canadian, and European stocks and ETFs; Robinhood excludes OTC stocks. An ETF can be listed in a supported market yet still be excluded from fractional trading, so verify each symbol in the broker’s search or order ticket.
3. Minimum order and funding size
Schwab advertises orders from $1. Interactive Brokers reports a $0.01 minimum for assessed non-recurring fractional-share trades. Fidelity and Robinhood’s cited information does not state a universal minimum. A broker may also enforce minimums for recurring plans, account funding, or a particular security that differ from its general fractional-share headline.
4. Total cost, not just commission
Commission-free language does not mean cost-free execution. Consider the quoted spread, any regulatory or exchange assessment, currency conversion, recurring-plan charge, and the possibility that a fractional order receives different price treatment. Fidelity notes that regulatory assessment fees can reduce sale proceeds. Schwab says Stock Slices trades carry no commissions but may not qualify for price improvement. Interactive Brokers’ Lite and Pro models differ. Obtain a live estimate in the order preview and consult the current fee schedule.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Order types and execution
Fractional orders may support fewer order types or different execution windows than whole-share orders. Determine whether your broker accepts market, limit, stop, or scheduled orders for the exact security and whether a dollar order is converted into a share quantity at execution. If the order is only available during certain market hours or is aggregated with other orders, that can affect the fill price and timing.

If you plan to invest weekly or monthly, verify that the broker supports recurring purchases for the security and account type you selected. Separately confirm whether cash dividends can be reinvested into fractional shares, whether reinvestment is automatic or optional, and whether a minimum cash balance is required. The cited broker summaries do not establish one common recurring-investment or dividend-reinvestment policy.
7. Splits, mergers, and other corporate actions
Ask how a split converts your fractional quantity, how cash-in-lieu payments are calculated when a corporate action creates an untradeable remainder, and whether a merger or tender offer permits fractional participation. A broker may pass through an economic adjustment while limiting elections or communications for fractional holders. Obtain the procedure from the broker before a corporate action deadline rather than relying on whole-share assumptions.
8. Voting rights
Voting rights are broker-dependent. Some brokers may aggregate fractional interests and vote only whole-share portions, while others may offer a limited process or no voting instruction for fractions. The SEC specifically warns that voting rights depend on the broker. Read the proxy and fractional-share disclosures for your account if voting is important to you.
9. Transfers and portability
Fractional positions generally cannot be transferred in kind to another brokerage, according to the SEC Investor Bulletin. A transfer may therefore require the broker to sell the fraction and send cash, while whole-share portions may move separately. Ask about transfer-out fees, tax-lot reporting, and the treatment of recurring purchases before building a long-term position you may later move.
10. Country, account, and tax eligibility
Availability depends on residence, entity type, account registration, market access, and local rules. The presence of a U.S. ticker does not make a service available in every country. Confirm eligibility during account opening and check whether the account can hold the intended currency and security. The four documented services do not have one universal geographic or account policy.

How to buy a fractional U.S. share without using a tokenized stock
- List the exact symbols. Record each stock or ETF, its exchange, and whether you need U.S.-only or international access.
- Filter the brokers. Remove any service that cannot open your account in your country or does not support the security type and exchange you need.
- Read the fractional disclosure. Look specifically for ownership language, custody, voting, corporate actions, transfer restrictions, and liquidation on account closure.
- Check the live order ticket. Search the ticker, select a dollar or fractional-share quantity, and note the minimum, available order types, market-hours restrictions, estimated price, spread, and displayed fees.
- Choose a funding and recurrence plan. Decide whether this is a one-time purchase, a recurring contribution, or dividend reinvestment. Confirm that the feature applies to the exact account and security.
- Place a small test order if the terms are acceptable. Review the confirmation for the filled fractional quantity, execution price, fees, and settlement date.
- Save the records. Keep confirmations and statements showing the quantity, cost basis, dividends, and any cash-in-lieu payment. These records matter if you later transfer or close the account.
Common failure modes and how to resolve them
The ticker cannot be purchased fractionally
First check whether it is OTC, outside the broker’s supported exchange list, an ineligible ETF, or temporarily restricted by a corporate action. If the listing is not supported, buying a whole share does not convert it into an eligible fractional position at that broker; you need a different supported security or service.
The order is rejected below the stated minimum
Compare the amount with the broker’s minimum for that order type. Schwab’s public starting point is $1, while Interactive Brokers reports $0.01 for assessed non-recurring fractional trades. A recurring plan or special security rule can impose a different threshold. Increase the order to the displayed minimum or use an eligible whole-share order.
The fill price differs from the displayed quote
Check whether the order was a market order, whether the fraction was aggregated, and whether the broker warns that fractional orders may not receive price improvement. Compare the confirmation with the quote and any spread or regulatory charge shown before submission. For a price-sensitive purchase, use a supported limit order if the broker offers one for that fraction.

Ask the receiving broker whether it accepts fractional transfers. Because fractional positions generally cannot move in kind, the sending broker may liquidate the fraction and transfer cash while moving any whole-share remainder. Request the tax-lot and cash-in-lieu details before initiating the transfer.
A split or merger creates an unexpected cash payment
Read the corporate-action notice and verify how the broker calculated the remainder. Fractional results that cannot be delivered may be paid in cash, and election or voting procedures can differ from whole-share treatment. Contact the broker before the stated deadline if you need to submit an election.

| Your priority | Most aligned documented option | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large mainstream U.S. stock and ETF selection with dollar-based orders | Fidelity | Supports fractional or dollar-based orders for eligible NMS exchange-listed stocks and ETFs | Minimum, order types, recurring purchases, dividends, voting, and transfer treatment |

| Simple app-based access to eligible exchange-listed U.S. stocks and ETFs | Robinhood | Supports eligible NMS securities on national exchanges and excludes OTC stocks | Minimum, execution details, fees, recurring features, voting, and transfer rules |
Bottom line for choosing a tokenized-stock alternative
For most people seeking fractional U.S. shares, a regulated brokerage account is the more direct structure: the broker records a fractional interest in its custody system instead of asking you to rely on a crypto token’s representation and redemption terms. Fidelity is the documented choice for broad U.S. dollar-based investing, Schwab for a $1 starting point, Interactive Brokers for international breadth, and Robinhood for an app-first experience limited to eligible NMS securities.
The deciding evidence is not the brand name or the headline minimum. It is the exact ticker’s eligibility, the order ticket’s total cost and execution method, the account’s country and registration rules, and the written treatment of dividends, corporate actions, voting, and transfers. Check those terms before funding a recurring plan or building a position you may need to move.
