Best Alternatives to TinyFish for Reliable AI Web Browsing

There is no single best TinyFish replacement. Choose Skyvern for changing, authenticated, multi-step workflows; Stagehand when your engineers want code ownership with AI at selected steps; Playwright for known paths and strict assertions; Browserbase or Steel when browser infrastructure is the problem; and Firecrawl when the outcome is extracted web data rather than a completed transaction.

The reliable choice depends on which layer you need: an agent that plans a goal, an SDK that mixes AI with selectors, a deterministic automation framework, hosted browser sessions, or an extraction pipeline. Treat reliability as a workload measurement, not a product slogan.

Quick comparison

Option Primary layer Best for Main trade-off
Skyvern Goal-driven browser automation platform Changing, authenticated, multi-step workflows AI actions add latency and variability; self-hosting adds operations and licensing work
Stagehand Code-first hybrid SDK Applications that need AI actions inside engineer-owned workflows You own process logic, approvals, retries and deployment
Playwright Deterministic browser automation and testing Known paths, regression suites, CI and high-volume repeatability Locators and assertions must be maintained when sites change
Browserbase Managed remote browser infrastructure Teams that need sessions, profiles, proxies and observability without running a browser fleet It does not provide your task logic or repair ambiguous instructions
Steel Managed or self-hosted browser API Isolated Chrome sessions with deployment control Self-hosting transfers reliability and security operations to your team
Firecrawl Extraction-first crawling and browser interaction Structured web data, monitoring and knowledge pipelines Not a direct substitute for a goal-driven agent completing authenticated transactions

What TinyFish is—and what you are replacing

TinyFish’s Browser product is described as a managed cloud browser that you drive with Playwright, Puppeteer or raw Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). Sessions use native Chromium and include proxy routing and anti-bot handling. TinyFish lists a price of $0.002 per browser minute, reports that 85% of sessions reached the page without being blocked, and reports less than 250 milliseconds to a live Chromium session from cold. TinyFish identifies these as internal, vendor-reported figures from 2026, not independent benchmarks, so use them as a baseline for questions to validate rather than as a guarantee.

That baseline matters because a managed browser is infrastructure, not necessarily an agent. A browser service can start Chromium, preserve a profile, route traffic through a proxy and expose logs while your application still has to decide which page to open, which fields to fill, when a task is complete and what to do when a site changes. Several alternatives below replace that missing task layer; others provide a different browser runtime or a better extraction path.

Skyvern: the closest full-agent alternative

How it works

Skyvern is positioned as an AI browser-automation platform for multi-step workflows that change. Its execution loop captures the page, reduces the DOM to interactive elements, supplies visual and element information to a language model, executes actions through Playwright in Chromium and checks whether the stated goal is complete. The platform combines natural-language actions, structured extraction, page-state validation, deterministic Playwright actions, AI fallbacks, visual workflows, APIs, Python and TypeScript SDKs and run history.

This design lets a workflow retain explicit actions where the page is stable while asking the model to interpret a changing layout or choose among page elements. Validation after each meaningful state is important: a click that technically succeeded is not the same as a form submission that produced the expected confirmation.

When Skyvern is the right fit

  • Downloading invoices from supplier or finance portals whose navigation varies by account.
  • Submitting forms in compliance or government portals with changing labels and intermediate screens.
  • Authenticated processes where a human goal is stable but the route and page layout are not.
  • Teams that want hosted or self-hosted deployment and a run history without assembling every control plane themselves.

Limits to plan for

AI steps are slower and less predictable than known selectors. Keep stable portions deterministic and reserve model-driven actions for ambiguous or changing states. Self-hosting introduces browser operations, model and credential configuration, monitoring, upgrades and licensing responsibilities. Before allowing an agent to submit, purchase, delete or otherwise create an irreversible effect, insert an approval gate and verify the resulting page state.

Stagehand: code-owned hybrid automation

What the SDK provides

Stagehand is described as an MIT-licensed SDK for browser agents in TypeScript, Python and Go. Its act, extract and observe primitives let an application request a natural-language action, obtain schema-validated data or discover possible actions. Deterministic page and locator methods remain available in the same workflow, so an engineer can use a locator for a stable checkout field and an AI action for a layout that differs across accounts.

The comparison describes self-healing actions, schema-validated extraction, caching, metrics, observability hooks and a first-party integration with Browserbase. Those capabilities are useful when the application needs typed outputs and instrumentation rather than an opaque “agent completed” status.

Best use cases

  • Product teams that want application-owned business logic and selective AI assistance.
  • Workflows where most steps are known but one or two screens require interpretation.
  • Systems that need typed extraction, cached actions, metrics and hooks into an existing observability stack.
  • Organizations that prefer an MIT-licensed SDK and want to decide where it runs.

What your team still owns

Stagehand is an SDK, not a complete business-operations layer. Your code must define the process, retries, idempotency, approvals, exception routing, credential handling and deployment. You also decide how to record evidence and when a model result is trustworthy enough to continue. If you need a ready-made workflow platform rather than primitives inside your service, Skyvern is the closer architectural match.

Playwright: the deterministic choice

Why it remains reliable

Playwright is an Apache-2.0 browser automation and testing framework for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Locator-based interactions, isolated browser contexts, automatic waiting, retries, reports and traces make a known path explicit and reviewable. Assertions can verify URL changes, visible text, downloaded files or application state instead of relying on a model’s interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Playwright wins

  • Regression tests and continuous-integration jobs that must fail loudly when behavior changes.
  • Stable, high-volume workflows with a known sequence of pages and controls.
  • Automations requiring screenshots, PDFs, traces or reproducible debugging.
  • Teams that need cross-browser coverage across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

The maintenance cost

Playwright does not infer a business goal for you. Engineers maintain locators, assertions, browser binaries, test data, CI capacity and recovery paths. A target site redesign can break a locator or alter a redirect without any model available to reinterpret the intent. That explicit failure is often preferable for regulated or high-consequence work, but it means you must monitor the target and update code when its interface changes.

Browserbase: managed sessions beneath your agent

What it solves

Browserbase supplies managed remote browser sessions that can sit underneath Stagehand, Playwright or another agent. The documented capabilities include persistent contexts for cookies and authentication state, live debugging, recordings, console and network logs, metrics, proxies and browser-identity controls. This removes much of the work involved in provisioning, isolating, scaling and debugging a browser fleet.

What it does not solve

Browserbase does not repair a broken locator, decide whether an ambiguous instruction is safe or define your escalation policy. Your application still owns task logic, assertions and approvals. A persistent context can preserve a login, but it also increases the impact of a leaked session; isolate contexts by user or job and expire them according to your risk model.

Choose it when infrastructure is the bottleneck

Use this layer when your team already knows how a browser should be controlled and needs reliable remote execution, session visibility and evidence. If the central problem is interpreting changing pages rather than operating browsers at scale, pair managed infrastructure with an agent or hybrid SDK instead of expecting the infrastructure service to become one.

Steel: managed or self-hosted browser API

Steel is described as an open-source browser API with a managed cloud service. It offers isolated Chrome sessions, connections from Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium or Steel SDKs, persistent profiles, proxy controls and session viewing. You can use the managed service for less operational work or self-host the browser layer for more control over deployment and data handling.

The trade-off is operational ownership. Self-hosting can help with network boundaries, residency or internal controls, but your team then operates capacity, patching, isolation, monitoring and incident response. Managed deployment reduces that burden while creating a vendor and data-processing decision. Steel is therefore a browser-runtime choice, not a replacement for the workflow code or agent that determines what to do.

Firecrawl: choose extraction instead of an agent

When the deliverable is data

Firecrawl is positioned as a web-extraction platform with browser interaction for crawling, structured extraction, knowledge bases, monitoring and data pipelines. It fits projects where the output is cleaned web content, records matching a schema or a continuously refreshed dataset. In those cases, a full browser agent can add unnecessary planning and action overhead.

When it is the wrong substitute

Do not treat an extraction-first system as a direct replacement for an agent that must complete an authenticated transaction. Downloading a public page into a structured record is a different problem from logging into a portal, filling a form, handling an account-specific challenge and confirming a state-changing submission. Select Firecrawl when extraction is the goal; select an agent or deterministic automation when a transaction is the goal.

A reliable architecture is usually hybrid

Many production workflows should not be entirely AI-driven or entirely selector-driven. Divide the process by uncertainty:

  1. Define the business goal and completion evidence. Specify the exact record, confirmation text, file or state that proves success. “Click submit” is not a sufficient completion condition.
  2. Keep stable navigation deterministic. Use Playwright locators or equivalent SDK methods for controls whose names and structure are known. Deterministic steps are easier to test, cache and audit.
  3. Use AI only where interpretation is needed. Let a model identify a changing label, choose among equivalent fields or interpret a page state that differs by account. Constrain the action to an allowed scope.
  4. Validate after every consequential transition. Check the resulting URL, visible confirmation, downloaded artifact or structured value before continuing. If validation fails, stop or route to a human instead of guessing.
  5. Make retries safe. A retry after a timeout can duplicate a submission. Use idempotency keys where the target supports them, detect existing results and require approval before repeating an irreversible action.
  6. Capture evidence. Store the relevant URL, timestamp, screenshot or recording, trace and structured output when an operator or auditor must reconstruct what happened.
  7. Escalate ambiguity. Define the conditions that pause a run: unexpected domains, missing fields, new authentication challenges, conflicting totals or an action outside the allowed scope.

How to measure reliability before committing

No independent head-to-head test establishes that one of these products is universally more reliable. Run a controlled evaluation on the exact sites, account states and exception paths your service will encounter. A public demo or a single successful login is not enough.

Metrics to collect

  • Completion rate: percentage of runs that reach the defined success state without human intervention.
  • Intervention rate: percentage requiring a person to select an element, solve an exception or approve a step.
  • Latency: total time and the time spent waiting for browser startup, page loads and model decisions.
  • Cost: browser minutes, model calls, retries, storage and any managed-service charges for the same completed outcome.
  • Evidence quality: whether a reviewer can verify the action from traces, screenshots, URLs, recordings and structured outputs.
  • Change recovery: time and engineering effort required after a target-site layout or authentication change.

Test normal paths and deliberately difficult cases: expired sessions, slow pages, missing fields, redirects, duplicate records, permission errors, changed labels and partial completion. Record results by site and account state; aggregating unlike workflows hides the failures that matter.

Security and governance for browser agents

Browser automation operates on untrusted pages while holding browser state and sometimes credentials. Treat every page as potentially hostile and every agent output as untrusted until validated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Isolate sessions: use separate browser contexts or profiles per user, tenant and job. Do not let cookies or local storage bleed between accounts.
  • Apply least privilege: create credentials that can perform only the required task. Prefer read-only access for extraction and separate approval credentials for state-changing actions.
  • Restrict network access: allow only required domains and services where possible, and monitor unexpected navigation or downloads.
  • Protect secrets: keep credentials outside prompts and page content, inject them through a controlled secret store and prevent them from appearing in logs, recordings or screenshots.
  • Require approval for consequences: purchases, deletions, legal submissions, account changes and external messages should pause for a human or an independently verified policy decision.
  • Retain auditable evidence: record only what policy permits, define retention periods and redact personal or financial data before sharing traces.
  • Watch for prompt injection: page text can contain instructions aimed at the agent. Treat page content as data, not authority, and constrain tools and destinations in code.

Latency, cost and deployment trade-offs

Browser-minute pricing is only one component of total cost. TinyFish lists $0.002 per browser minute, while its internal 2026 figures for block avoidance and cold-start latency are vendor claims. Alternative products may add model-call charges, storage, recordings, proxy traffic, retries or support tiers. Compare the cost of one successful and evidenced task, not the nominal cost of an idle session.

Deterministic Playwright flows usually avoid model-decision latency but require engineering maintenance. AI-driven steps can reduce locator maintenance on changing pages while increasing per-step latency and variance. Managed infrastructure can reduce operations work while adding vendor and data-processing costs. Self-hosting can improve control or residency at the expense of capacity planning, patching and incident response.

A practical selection checklist

  • Is the output a completed transaction, a verified browser state or extracted data?
  • How often do the target pages and authentication paths change?
  • Can a failed action be safely retried, or could it duplicate an irreversible effect?
  • Do you need Chromium only, or cross-browser coverage including Firefox and WebKit?
  • Who will maintain locators, prompts, browser binaries, model access and CI?
  • Do you need persistent profiles, proxy routing, recordings, network logs or live debugging?
  • Must deployment be hosted, self-hosted or restricted to a particular network boundary?
  • What evidence must an operator, customer or auditor be able to review?
  • Which credentials can the automation use, and where are approval gates required?

Bottom line

Use Skyvern when the product should interpret and execute changing, authenticated, multi-step workflows. Use Stagehand when engineers want to own the workflow and insert AI actions selectively. Use Playwright when deterministic assertions, CI and reviewable traces matter most. Use Browserbase or Steel when sessions, profiles, proxies and browser observability are the infrastructure challenge. Use Firecrawl when the job is extracting and monitoring web data rather than completing a browser transaction. In every case, measure the exact workload, keep stable steps deterministic, constrain credentials and require evidence before treating a run as successful.
