For most people, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is the safest replacement for the Vivo S70 when distant-subject photography is the priority. Its dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras give you two useful optical perspectives, and its 100x mode can help with framing subjects that are extremely far away. The vivo X200 Pro is the more camera-specialist option: it pairs a 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto with a comparatively large 1/1.4-inch sensor and optical stabilization. Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max for dependable video and Apple-device integration, or the Google Pixel 9 Pro if you prefer computational processing.

There is no proven universal winner. TechRadar found Samsung’s zoom hardware the most versatile but cautioned that versatility alone does not make it the best long-range camera. Tom’s Guide reported a narrow iPhone victory in a 200-photo comparison, with only a small gap between the iPhone 16 Pro Max and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Your subject, light, movement, preferred framing distance and ecosystem should decide the purchase.

What makes a phone good at photographing distant subjects?

Long-range phone photography is not the same as choosing the largest number printed beside a zoom slider. A 50x or 100x setting is usually a computational mode that crops, merges frames and sharpens an image. It can be useful for identifying or composing a faraway subject, but it does not provide the same optical detail as a dedicated telephoto lens.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, 256GB, Titanium Black - Unlocked (Renewed) | Unlocked
  • Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
  • Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
  • Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
  • 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
  • Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
  1. Native telephoto reach: A dedicated 5x lens generally preserves more real detail at its native focal length than a main-camera crop pretending to be 5x.
  2. Telephoto sensor size: A larger sensor collects more light and gives the processing system more information to work with, especially in shade, at dusk or indoors.
  3. Stabilization: Optical or sensor-based stabilization reduces blur from hand movement. It matters more as focal length increases.
  4. Processing at intermediate zooms: Most shots fall between the labeled lenses, such as 7x or 10x. The phone must blend optical data with a crop and computational reconstruction.
  5. Motion handling: A distant bird, child or vehicle can move between frames. Multi-frame processing may then create ghosting or smearing.
  6. Video stabilization: A phone that takes sharp stills may still produce shaky or soft footage when you pan toward a far subject.

Use 30x–100x modes as compositional or reconnaissance tools rather than treating them as equivalent to a 30x–100x optical lens. Atmospheric haze, heat shimmer, vibration and poor light can erase detail before software has anything useful to reconstruct.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: the best all-around replacement

Why its zoom layout is useful

The Galaxy S25 Ultra gives you two dedicated telephoto viewpoints instead of asking one lens to cover every distance. Tom’s Guide lists a 10MP 3x telephoto and a 50MP 5x telephoto, alongside a 200MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide. The 3x camera is useful for people, animals and architectural details that look too tight at the main camera’s crop. The 5x module gives a more natural perspective for distant subjects and compresses scenes without requiring the extreme digital processing used at higher settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechRadar reports a magnification ceiling of 100x. That mode can help you locate a sign across a valley, check a stage detail from the back of a venue or compose a moon shot. It should not be interpreted as 100x optical resolution. At that setting, tiny hand movements, atmospheric haze and subject motion can dominate the result.

Where it leads the field

TechRadar calls Samsung’s zoom hardware the most versatile among the phones in its comparison. That is a meaningful advantage when you do not know in advance whether a scene will need 3x, 5x, 8x or more. You can choose a native module near the framing you want rather than forcing one telephoto to handle every composition.

Versatility is not an automatic image-quality victory. TechRadar explicitly cautions that the hardware advantage does not by itself make the S25 Ultra the best long-range camera. Tom’s Guide’s 200-photo shootout gave the iPhone 16 Pro Max a narrow overall win, showing that exposure, color, sharpening and frame selection can outweigh a specification advantage in some scenes.

Who should buy it

  • Choose it if you photograph a mixture of portraits, sports, wildlife, travel landmarks and distant details.
  • Choose it if you want both a practical 3x perspective and a dedicated 5x perspective in one phone.
  • Choose it if a 100x mode is useful for finding or composing subjects, while accepting that the result is computational.

Do not choose it solely because “100x” is the largest number. If your priority is maximum telephoto light-gathering rather than framing flexibility, the vivo X200 Pro’s larger telephoto sensor deserves a close look.

vivo X200 Pro: the camera-first alternative

The telephoto specification that matters

vivo’s product page specifies a 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto camera built around a 1/1.4-inch HP9 sensor. It lists an f/2.67 aperture, an 85mm-equivalent focal length, a floating periscope structure and CIPA 4.5 stabilization. The manufacturer describes it as delivering “remarkable clarity and professional-grade color accuracy, even at extreme zoom.” The large sensor is the central reason to consider this phone: it can provide a stronger starting signal in dim conditions than a smaller telephoto sensor, although final results still depend on shutter speed, subject movement and processing.

The 85mm-equivalent lens is shorter than a typical 5x module in the 111–120mm-equivalent range. That means the X200 Pro does not necessarily frame a faraway subject as tightly at its native setting as a 5x telephoto. Its buying case is the combination of sensor area, aperture, stabilization and color treatment, not the longest native reach.

How it differs from Samsung’s approach

Samsung spreads its reach across dedicated 3x and 5x cameras and then extends it computationally. Vivo concentrates attention on one high-resolution, large-sensor periscope. The Samsung layout is easier to adapt when the subject distance changes quickly. The X200 Pro can be attractive when you can move closer, crop moderately or want cleaner telephoto files in challenging light.

The cited product information does not establish a maximum digital-magnification figure for the X200 Pro, nor does it establish a complete regional price or availability list. Confirm that the exact memory, software and camera features offered in your market match the version you are considering.

Who should buy it

  • Choose it if the telephoto camera itself is more important than having several native zoom steps.
  • Choose it if you value the 1/1.4-inch sensor, f/2.67 aperture and stated CIPA 4.5 stabilization.
  • Choose it if you like Vivo/ZEISS color rendering and are comfortable with an 85mm-equivalent native view.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: the consistency and video choice

What its native camera provides

The cited Tom’s Guide comparison lists a 12MP 5x optical telephoto. That gives the iPhone a straightforward long-range option without the complexity of multiple telephoto lenses. At its native 5x view, the camera is designed for a clear, repeatable framing step rather than a long list of magnification presets.

Tom’s Guide reports that the iPhone 16 Pro Max narrowly won its 200-photo shootout against the Galaxy S25 Ultra. “Narrowly” matters: the result does not establish a universal advantage in every lighting condition or at every focal length. It indicates that exposure, color, autofocus behavior, computational choices and frame consistency can produce an excellent overall result even when another phone has more extensive zoom hardware.

Why video changes the decision

The iPhone is the strongest candidate here when distant-subject video and dependable operation matter as much as still photographs. The cited recommendation emphasizes consistent video and Apple’s ecosystem. If you already use Apple devices and want footage that fits naturally into that workflow, the iPhone’s integration can be more valuable than an additional extreme-zoom mode.

The cited comparison does not provide the iPhone telephoto sensor size, a stabilization rating or a digital-zoom ceiling. Do not infer those values from the 5x optical label. Ask whether the exact video modes, storage capacity and regional software features meet your needs before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy it

  • Choose it if video of performances, children, travel scenes or sports is a major use case.
  • Choose it if you want a small number of predictable camera choices rather than several zoom presets.
  • Choose it if Apple-device integration and consistent processing outweigh maximum native zoom flexibility.

Google Pixel 9 Pro: the computational-photography choice

What the comparisons show

TechRadar’s comparison includes Pixel 9 Pro examples at 5x, 10x and 30x and evaluates zoom alongside motion, low light, portraits and video. The phone has fewer native telephoto presets than Samsung, so you have fewer optical framing steps when a subject moves from medium distance to very far away.

That limitation does not make the Pixel 9 Pro unsuitable for distant subjects. Google’s computational photography can make a 10x or 30x image look competitive by combining detail, exposure and sharpening decisions. The trade-off is that the camera must reconstruct more of the image as you move away from its native telephoto view. Fine textures, repeating patterns and moving edges are the places where such processing is most likely to look artificial.

Who should buy it

  • Choose it if you prefer Google’s automated processing and want the camera to make many decisions for you.
  • Choose it if your subjects include a mix of motion, low light and portraits, not just maximum-distance static scenes.
  • Choose it if you can accept fewer native zoom steps in exchange for computationally strong intermediate magnification.

The cited material does not establish a Pixel 9 Pro telephoto sensor size, stabilization rating, exact optical specifications beyond the evaluated 5x examples, price or regional availability. Treat those as model- and market-dependent details.

How the four phones compare for real shooting situations

Wildlife and birds

Birds are difficult because they are small, fast and often in shade. Samsung’s dedicated 5x camera and 100x reach give you the most framing flexibility, but the 100x mode is unlikely to preserve feather detail when the bird is moving. The vivo X200 Pro’s large 1/1.4-inch telephoto sensor can be advantageous for a perched bird in lower light, provided 85mm-equivalent framing is close enough or you can crop. The iPhone is appealing when the same outing includes video. The Pixel is a sensible choice when you prefer automated processing and accept fewer optical steps.

Sports and stage performances

Movement makes shutter speed and autofocus behavior more important than headline magnification. Use the native 5x camera on the iPhone or Samsung where it frames the action; extreme digital zoom magnifies both subject movement and hand shake. Samsung is the easiest to adapt when the action moves toward or away from you because its 3x and 5x modules cover more starting points. The iPhone deserves preference when reliable video is central to the event.

Travel landmarks and architecture

Static subjects let you stabilize the phone, make several exposures and choose between focal lengths. Samsung’s 3x/5x pair handles changing distances well. The X200 Pro’s 200MP telephoto gives you substantial capture resolution at its 85mm-equivalent view, which can be useful for architectural details that do not require a very tight 5x perspective. Pixel processing can be convenient for quick snapshots, while the iPhone is a strong fit when stills and video need to share a consistent look.

Low-light distant scenes

Low light rewards sensor area, aperture and stabilization, but it also punishes moving subjects. The vivo X200 Pro has the clearest stated hardware advantage here: a 1/1.4-inch telephoto sensor, f/2.67 aperture and CIPA 4.5 stabilization. Samsung’s 5x camera gives you a dedicated native perspective, yet the cited material does not provide a directly comparable telephoto sensor size or stabilization rating. The iPhone and Pixel may produce pleasing results through processing, but their telephoto sensor specifications are not established in the cited comparisons.

Video from a distance

Pick the iPhone 16 Pro Max first if consistent video is your defining requirement. Samsung is the better fit when you need to switch among multiple native zoom perspectives during a shot. Pixel processing is attractive for users who want automated results. The supplied specifications do not provide a like-for-like video-stabilization test across all four phones, so do not treat still-camera stabilization numbers as a video ranking.

How to choose without being misled by zoom numbers

  1. Write down your normal distance. Decide whether you usually stand a few meters from a person, across a sports field, at the back of a venue or far beyond that. A 3x camera can be more useful than 10x if it matches your real scenes.
  2. Identify your native lens. Check which camera is active at 3x, 5x or another labeled step. Native optical reach is the meaningful baseline; every step beyond it deserves closer scrutiny.
  3. Prioritize sensor area in difficult light. If you shoot at dusk, in forests or indoors, the X200 Pro’s stated 1/1.4-inch telephoto sensor is a significant specification. If your scenes are bright and your subjects move across distances, Samsung’s dual telephotos may be more useful.
  4. Separate stills from video. A phone can be excellent for single frames but awkward for stabilized video. Give the iPhone more weight if video is a primary deliverable.
  5. Look at intermediate magnifications. Compare 7x–10x results, not just native 5x samples. That is where phones combine optical data with crops and computational reconstruction.
  6. Check the local model. Prices, stock, firmware, storage, included camera features and availability can vary by country and over time. Verify the exact regional model rather than relying on a global specification page.

Practical technique for sharper long-range photos

Stabilize before increasing magnification

Brace both hands, lean against a solid surface or use a tripod when practical. At 30x or 100x, a tiny movement can shift the subject out of frame. Stabilization helps, but it cannot cancel a moving subject or atmospheric shimmer.

Start at the native telephoto

Frame the subject at the phone’s dedicated 3x or 5x camera before attempting higher magnification. If the subject is already small, move your position when possible. Optical information captured at the correct lens is usually more dependable than asking software to invent detail from a main-camera crop.

Take short bursts for moving subjects

Birds, athletes and vehicles may move between computational frames. A short sequence gives you a better chance of finding one image with a clean edge and natural texture than relying on a single shutter press.

Watch the light direction

Backlighting and haze reduce contrast at long distances. Reposition slightly to put light on the subject, and avoid judging detail from the phone’s preview until the image has finished processing. A sharper-looking preview is not proof that the saved file contains more real texture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use extreme zoom as a tool, not a promise

100x on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, or 30x examples on the Pixel 9 Pro, can help you locate a subject, read a distant composition or create an intentionally abstract image. For evidence-quality detail, keep the subject within the range where a dedicated telephoto still contributes most of the image.

Limitations and buying cautions

  • The Vivo S70’s own camera specifications, price and regional availability are not established in the cited material, so none of these phones can be described as a precise spec-for-spec upgrade.
  • A manufacturer’s magnification ceiling is not an optical-equivalence claim. Computational zoom can be useful, but it is not interchangeable with a dedicated long lens.
  • Image processing changes with firmware, and the same model can behave differently after an update or in a different regional build.
  • Prices and stock are market-dependent and time-sensitive. Compare current local listings for the exact storage and software configuration.
  • The cited comparisons do not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples laboratory ranking for every combination of distance, light, movement and focal length.

Which phone should you buy?

Buy the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if you want the broadest native zoom flexibility and a useful fallback at 100x. Buy the vivo X200 Pro if your priority is a large, stabilized telephoto sensor and you are comfortable with an 85mm-equivalent native view. Buy the iPhone 16 Pro Max if video consistency and Apple integration matter most; its narrow win in Tom’s Guide’s 200-photo shootout shows that simpler hardware can still produce an excellent overall result. Buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro if computational processing is your preference and fewer native telephoto steps are acceptable.
