Best overall alternative: choose the QNAP TVS-h874 if you need more drive capacity, dual 10GbE and PCIe expansion; choose the Synology DiskStation DS1525+ if an easier backup and media-management experience matters more than flagship performance. The ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Gen2 preserves six-bay capacity with a broad multimedia app catalog, while the TerraMaster F6-424 is the value-oriented Plex/Jellyfin choice. The TerraMaster F6-424 Max is the six-bay option for buyers who specifically need dual 10GbE.

No candidate has a published, apples-to-apples test proving a particular number of simultaneous 4K transcodes. Your clients, codecs, subtitles, network and storage layout determine the result, so treat stream-count promises as unreliable without testing your exact library.

What you are replacing

The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro is unusual among home NAS appliances because its published specification emphasizes workstation-style computing as much as storage. It combines an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H (16 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz), 64 GB of LPDDR5/x memory, six SATA bays, two M.2 2280 NVMe slots, a 128 GB system SSD, dual 10GbE, a PCIe Gen4 x8 slot, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, SD 4.0 and HDMI output supporting 8K. Its RAID modes are JBOD, Basic, 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. UGREEN states a maximum of 208 TB using six 32 TB drives plus two 8 TB M.2 drives.

That specification makes the iDX6011 Pro attractive for containers, virtual machines, fast editing workflows and several demanding services in addition to a media library. The compromise is software choice: a TechRadar review found that Plex was not in the main app library, although Jellyfin, Theatre, Docker and SSH installation were alternatives. That is a software-path issue, not proof that Plex cannot run.

Which alternative fits your priority?

Pick QNAP for capacity and expansion

Eight bays give the TVS-h874 the largest raw drive count in this group. Two PCIe slots allow you to add network or storage hardware, and the platform has HDMI output and up to 64 GB of DDR4. A listed 16-core/24-thread Core i9 configuration is the strongest documented CPU option in the shortlist. This is the appropriate direction if your media server is also a container host, virtualisation lab, editing repository or high-speed backup target.

Plan for a larger enclosure, greater power consumption and more configuration work than a small home NAS. Select the exact TVS-h874 variant before buying: processor, memory, network ports and included accessories differ by SKU, and the available configuration determines whether the headline specification applies.

Pick Synology for administration and backups

The DS1525+ is the better fit when the NAS must be manageable by the whole household rather than tuned like a server. DSM’s mature management and backup ecosystem, ECC memory and documented Media Server package make it a strong library-and-backup appliance. Media Server is designed to connect televisions, stereos and other network devices to the NAS and stream stored music, photographs and video.

You give up one bay and start with 8 GB rather than the iDX6011 Pro’s 64 GB. The two built-in 2.5GbE ports are also slower than dual 10GbE; an optional 10GbE module and the Gen3 x2 upgrade slot can address networking, but add cost and installation work. For Plex specifically, confirm that the package and hardware-acceleration behavior you need are supported by the exact DSM and model combination instead of assuming that every Synology NAS behaves alike.

Pick ASUSTOR for six bays and app choice

The Lockerstor 6 Gen2 (AS6706T) keeps a six-bay layout, so it is the closest capacity match to the iDX6011 Pro among the alternatives. ASUSTOR’s App Central can install UPnP Media Server and OwnTone for streaming to computers, televisions and mobile devices. Plex’s compatibility information includes ASUSTOR NAS families, which gives you a documented starting point for a Plex deployment.

Do not use the family-level Plex listing as a promise of a particular transcode count. Before ordering, compare the exact AS6706T CPU, installed RAM, network ports and hardware-acceleration support with your library’s codecs and subtitle habits. Direct play may require little CPU; converting high-bitrate 4K video, HDR or image-based subtitles can be much more demanding.

Pick TerraMaster F6-424 for a value Plex box

The F6-424 combines six bays, two M.2 NVMe slots, an Intel N95 quad-core processor, 8 GB of DDR5 expandable to 32 GB and dual 2.5GbE. TerraMaster explicitly lists “Plex Media Server” support, and Plex lists TerraMaster among supported NAS families. That makes the installation path clearer than the iDX6011 Pro’s main-library situation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The N95 and dual 2.5GbE are a lower tier than the iDX6011 Pro’s Core Ultra 7 and dual 10GbE. It is therefore a sensible choice for direct-play households, occasional conversion and ordinary file-serving, not a specification-equivalent replacement for heavy virtual machines or multiple demanding transcodes. Use the M.2 slots for a cache or application workload only after checking TerraMaster’s current guidance for your chosen drive type and volume layout.

Pick TerraMaster F6-424 Max for six-bay 10GbE

The F6-424 Max is the TerraMaster choice when network throughput matters more than the lowest entry price. It has six bays, dual built-in M.2 NVMe slots and dual 10GbE, restoring the faster links that the regular F6-424 lacks.

TerraMaster’s published information for this model does not establish every CPU detail, memory ceiling or regional Plex package. Confirm those items on the exact listing before treating it as a replacement for compute-heavy workloads. A 10GbE port is useful only when the switch, cabling, client and storage can sustain it; otherwise the extra interface will not improve television streaming.

Media-server software: Plex, Jellyfin and built-in packages

Plex compatibility is model dependent

Plex publishes compatibility by NAS family and platform, not as a guarantee that every processor can transcode every file. The ASUSTOR and TerraMaster families in this shortlist appear on Plex’s supported-NAS information, while TerraMaster specifically lists Plex Media Server for the F6-424. Check the exact model, operating-system version, package architecture and hardware-acceleration requirements before purchasing.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The iDX6011 Pro deserves a separate check because Plex was not present in the main app library in the cited review. Jellyfin, Theatre, Docker and SSH-based installation were identified as alternatives. That route can work, but it may require manual updates, container configuration, permission fixes and more troubleshooting than a one-click package.

Direct play versus transcoding

A client that supports the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution and subtitle format can direct-play it, leaving the NAS mostly responsible for reading and serving data. Transcoding begins when the client cannot decode one of those components or when bandwidth must be reduced. 4K-to-1080p conversion, HDR tone mapping and subtitle burn-in can raise the workload sharply.

Because no independent, apples-to-apples transcoding tests were available for these models, do not buy on a claimed number of simultaneous 4K streams. Instead, test representative files from your library: one high-bitrate 4K file, one HDR file, an audio format your clients do not natively decode and a subtitle track that may require burn-in. Observe CPU, GPU or media-engine utilisation and playback errors during peak household use.

Built-in alternatives to Plex

Synology Media Server is a straightforward DLNA-style option for televisions, stereos and other network players. ASUSTOR’s UPnP Media Server and OwnTone serve a similar purpose for compatible clients. These packages can be preferable when every playback device supports the same formats and you do not need Plex’s user profiles, remote-sharing workflow or metadata behavior.

Storage, RAID and expansion planning

Start with the data you cannot replace

Drive-bay count is not usable capacity. RAID 1, 5, 6 and 10 reserve space for redundancy, while a separate backup is still required for deletion, corruption, theft and ransomware. JBOD, Basic and RAID 0 improve flexibility or capacity but do not provide equivalent protection. The iDX6011 Pro supports all of those modes; alternatives use their own storage managers, so read the model-specific migration and expansion rules before moving an existing array.

List your current media, photographs, documents, application data and future growth. Allocate space for filesystem overhead, snapshots or versioned backups where supported. If a six-bay chassis already meets your growth forecast, the QNAP’s two extra bays may add cost and idle power without improving your day-to-day experience.

Use M.2 and PCIe slots deliberately

M.2 NVMe slots can host a cache, applications or a separate fast volume depending on the operating system. Cache is not a substitute for more RAM, a backup or faster HDDs, and a cache can complicate recovery. The iDX6011 Pro’s PCIe Gen4 x8 slot and Thunderbolt 4 ports are unusually capable; the QNAP’s two PCIe slots provide a different but similarly useful expansion path. The DS1525+ has a Gen3 x2 network-upgrade slot, while the TerraMaster models document dual M.2 slots. Verify lane widths, supported cards and boot or volume restrictions before buying hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match networking to the rest of the house

Dual 10GbE is valuable for several workstations, large backups or editing over the network, but it does not make a single television stream faster. You need a compatible switch, transceivers or cabling and clients with faster interfaces. Dual 2.5GbE is often sufficient for several direct-play clients and routine backups. Link aggregation can improve aggregate traffic in supported configurations, but it does not automatically turn one file transfer into a 5Gbps or 20Gbps connection.

Noise, power and total ownership cost

The available specifications do not provide standardized noise measurements, idle watts or transcoding-power tests, so a quiet-room ranking would be misleading. In general, more bays, faster CPUs, 10GbE interfaces and expansion cards increase the opportunity for heat and fan noise. The DS1525+ is positioned as the lower-power choice in this group; the TVS-h874 is the larger, higher-power option. Treat those as design trade-offs, not laboratory measurements.

Budget beyond the chassis. Six or eight NAS-grade drives can cost more than the enclosure, and 10GbE switches, memory modules, NVMe devices, UPS hardware and replacement drives change the total. Prices and stock were not established for the models here, so verify a current regional listing and warranty terms immediately before checkout.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Inventory your clients. Record each television, streaming box, phone and browser, noting which codecs, HDR formats and subtitle types it can direct-play.
  2. Measure storage growth. Total your current files, add the next two to three years of expected additions and reserve space for snapshots or backups.
  3. Choose redundancy. Select RAID or the vendor’s equivalent based on drive count and rebuild tolerance; keep an independent backup of irreplaceable files.
  4. Validate the software path. Confirm the exact model’s Plex package, Jellyfin installation method, container support or built-in DLNA/UPnP server before purchasing.
  5. Check hardware acceleration. Verify that the operating system, driver and media application can access the processor’s supported media engine; do not infer this from core count alone.
  6. Plan the network. Match 2.5GbE or 10GbE to your switch, cabling and clients. A fast NAS connected to a 1GbE switch remains limited by that link.
  7. Stress-test before migrating. Copy sample files, test remote and local playback, force a transcode, enable subtitles and monitor resource use during simultaneous household activity.
  8. Document recovery. Save administrator credentials securely, record the array layout, export application settings and test restoring a file before the NAS becomes your only copy.

Decision guide

Your priority First model to investigate Why What to verify before purchase
Maximum bays and expansion QNAP TVS-h874 Eight bays, dual 10GbE on listed configurations, two PCIe slots and high-end CPU options Exact CPU/RAM SKU, power budget, chassis size and current price
Simplest household administration Synology DS1525+ DSM ecosystem, ECC memory and documented Media Server package Plex availability, 10GbE module cost and five-bay capacity limit
Six bays with broad app choice ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Gen2 Six-bay design, App Central multimedia apps and Plex family compatibility Exact CPU, RAM, ports and real transcode performance
Lowest-complexity six-bay Plex route TerraMaster F6-424 Explicit Plex listing, six bays, dual M.2 and upgradeable DDR5 Whether N95 performance covers your files and whether 2.5GbE is enough
Six bays with 10GbE TerraMaster F6-424 Max Dual 10GbE and dual M.2 built in CPU, RAM expansion, regional Plex package and availability
Workstation-style connectivity UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro Core Ultra 7, 64 GB memory, dual 10GbE, Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe Gen4 x8 Whether you accept the less-direct Plex installation path

Bottom line

For most buyers replacing the iDX6011 Pro, the QNAP TVS-h874 is the performance-and-capacity alternative, while the Synology DS1525+ is the management-and-backup alternative. Choose ASUSTOR when six bays and app variety are the priority. Choose the TerraMaster F6-424 for a documented, value-focused Plex path, or the F6-424 Max when dual 10GbE matters. Keep expectations grounded: none of these specifications alone guarantees a fixed number of 4K transcodes, and the best choice is the one whose software path, client compatibility, storage redundancy and network capacity match your actual home.
