For most buyers, the LG C5 65-inch OLED is the best alternative to Samsung’s S90H. It is the most balanced choice when Dolby Vision, a mature smart-TV interface and broad movie-and-gaming support matter more than staying with Samsung. Choose the Sony BRAVIA 8 II if accurate film presentation and Sony processing are your priorities. Choose the Samsung S90F if you want the closest same-brand successor and would rather keep Samsung’s interface, remote and HDR10+ approach.
The exact recommendation depends on your country, panel supplied and street price. Samsung’s UK listing identifies the reference television as the 65-inch QE65S90HAEXXU S90H 4K OLED Vision AI Smart TV; suffixes, tuners, warranties, panel types and stock can differ elsewhere.

Why the LG C5 is the default recommendation
It covers the widest range of movie sources
The C5 is the sensible starting point when your library includes discs, streaming services and games from several manufacturers. Dolby Vision is the decisive feature for many buyers moving away from Samsung. A Dolby Vision-capable TV can follow that format’s dynamic metadata when the source provides it, while still displaying ordinary HDR content. Before ordering, confirm that the retailer’s 65-inch model is the same regional version whose specification lists Dolby Vision.
It is a balanced rather than specialised choice
The C5 does not ask you to choose between a cinema-first picture and a gaming-first feature set. It is positioned as an all-round alternative, with webOS and a feature mix intended for daily television, films, consoles and PC use. That balance is why it is the safest recommendation when two people in a household have different priorities.
What the comparison evidence does and does not prove
RTINGS’ direct comparison says the LG C5 OLED and Samsung S90D OLED “trade blows.” That wording concerns the tested C5-versus-S90D matchup, not every S90H, S90F or panel size. RTINGS also reports that the S90D is generally brighter in HDR, has wider viewing angles and a wider colour gamut than the LG C4, while the C4 supports Dolby Vision. Those are comparative test results for named samples; they should not be converted into a guarantee that every Samsung panel will beat every LG panel in your room.
Who should not choose the C5 first
- Choose Sony instead if your highest priority is Sony’s film-oriented processing and presentation.
- Choose the S90F if keeping Samsung’s interface, remote and ecosystem matters more than changing brands.
- Look at the actual price before deciding: a heavily discounted S90F can change the value calculation, while a small price gap may make the newer LG the lower-risk purchase.
When the Sony BRAVIA 8 II is the better fit
Film-focused presentation
The BRAVIA 8 II belongs on the shortlist for viewers who watch a large amount of film, prestige television and broadcast material and who value Sony’s processing decisions. Sony’s advantage here is not a single specification; it is the way the set is positioned to handle cinema-oriented images and less-than-perfect sources. B&H’s 65-inch comparison places the BRAVIA 8 II alongside the LG C5 and Samsung S90D, which is useful context for shoppers comparing this class rather than a statement that all three perform identically.

Check source quality and room conditions
Processing matters most when the source is compressed, low resolution or inconsistent. If every source is a modern 4K console or a high-bitrate streaming service, differences may be less important than brightness, reflections and input features. In a room where daytime glare is severe, compare the sets in person or buy from a retailer with a practical return policy; OLED contrast can be excellent while reflections still make a dark image harder to see.
Questions to answer before buying
- Does the exact 65-inch regional SKU list the HDR formats your streaming devices use?
- How many HDMI 2.1 inputs are provided, and do they all support the refresh and VRR modes you need?
- Is the local warranty handled by Sony directly or by the retailer?
- Does the stand fit your furniture, or will you use a wall mount?
When the Samsung S90F makes more sense
The least disruptive upgrade path
The S90F is the closest same-brand successor/value path in this group. It is the natural option for an S90H owner who already likes Samsung’s menus, remote, account integration and picture controls. Familiarity has practical value: you are less likely to spend time relearning settings, replacing accessories or explaining a new interface to the family.
Do not assume “same series” means “same television”
Samsung model suffixes identify different markets, tuners and sometimes panel or feature variations. A 65-inch S90F sold in one country may not match a listing with a similar name elsewhere. Confirm the full model code, included stand, tuner standard, warranty provider and software features. Compare the final delivered price with clearance S90H stock and the LG C5 rather than relying on the model-year label.
HDR expectations
Samsung’s S90-series uses its own HDR format strategy. Verify the local specification for HDR10+ and check whether the services and discs you use provide that format. If Dolby Vision is central to your library, the LG is the simpler recommendation because Dolby Vision is one of its stated reasons for consideration.

Picture and HDR: what to compare in a shop
Brightness is not one universal number
Tom’s Guide reported 1,104 nits of HDR brightness for its S90H review sample in 2026. That test used a 55-inch television, not the 65-inch model, so treat the figure as evidence about that review sample rather than a laboratory result for every 65-inch S90H. Panel size, picture mode, firmware, measurement window and manufacturing variation can all change the result.
When comparing sets, ask whether a claimed brightness figure is a short highlight measurement or sustained full-screen output. A bright specular reflection in a film and a bright sports field stress the panel differently. Also check whether a television preserves colour saturation as brightness rises; HDR colour volume can matter more than peak white in animated films and games.
Dolby Vision versus HDR10+
Dolby Vision and HDR10+ both add scene or frame guidance to compatible HDR material. The useful question is not which logo is “best” in isolation, but which format your sources provide and which television supports it. Make a list of your streaming subscriptions, disc player and game consoles, then match that list against the exact regional television specification. A set that lacks the format used by your favourite service can still display the programme in a fallback HDR mode, but the result may not follow the creator’s dynamic metadata.

OLED panels generally retain contrast away from the centre seat, but the coating and panel construction determine how much ambient light you see reflected. RTINGS’ comparison found the Samsung S90D had wider viewing angles than the LG C4 in its tested units. That is useful comparative evidence, not a promise that the S90H, S90F and C5 will behave identically. Place a sample where your seating actually is, switch off shop demo modes and inspect a dark scene with lamps and windows in their normal positions.

Gaming: verify the ports before paying
Why HDMI 2.1 bandwidth matters
Current consoles and gaming PCs can need high-bandwidth HDMI for 4K at high frame rates, variable refresh rate and automatic low-latency switching. A television may advertise “gaming” while only some inputs support the highest combination of resolution, refresh and colour depth. The listing should identify which numbered ports support HDMI 2.1 and whether the feature applies to all ports or only one.
Refresh-rate claims need context
The relevant comparison range is 120Hz, 144Hz and, on some PC-oriented models, 165Hz. The available data does not establish a single refresh-rate or HDMI-bandwidth value for the C5, BRAVIA 8 II or S90F regional SKUs, so verify those figures on the manufacturer’s page. Confirm whether a higher number works at the resolution you will use, whether it requires a specific input, and whether VRR remains active at that setting.
Console setup checklist
- Connect the console to the HDMI input identified as the high-bandwidth gaming port.
- Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for the resolution and refresh combination you intend to run.
- Enable the television’s game or low-latency mode, then enable 4K, HDR and VRR in the console menu.
- Check the console’s information screen for the actual negotiated signal; do not rely only on the television’s advertising label.
- Test a dark game, a bright HDR game and a fast camera pan. Look for raised blacks, flicker, dropped frames or delayed controls.
Processing, upscaling and motion
Processing determines how a television handles cable channels, DVDs, older game consoles, streamed sports and film cadence. Sony is the film-focused choice in this group. LG is the balanced choice. Samsung is the continuity choice for S90H owners. Those descriptions are decision aids, not laboratory rankings.

Look for mosquito noise around faces, jagged diagonal lines, smeared text on a scoreboard and unnatural smoothing during a slow camera move. Disable showroom sharpening before judging detail. If you watch mostly native 4K, processing differences may recede; if you watch broadcast television every day, they can dominate your experience.

Smart-TV software, sound and warranty
Smart platform
The LG C5’s webOS is a stated reason to choose it. Samsung buyers should verify the current S90F software and regional services, while Sony buyers should confirm the operating system and app availability on the local BRAVIA 8 II page. Check the apps you actually use, voice-assistant support, profile controls and whether the television allows your preferred external player to start automatically.
Built-in sound
Do not choose solely from speaker wattage. Compare dialogue clarity, the position of the speakers and the connection options for a soundbar. A wall-mounted OLED may leave the built-in speakers pointed differently from a stand-mounted set. The available evidence does not establish a like-for-like sound ranking for these three models, so listen to each television if soundbar-free viewing is important.
Warranty and pixels
Warranty length, dead-pixel terms and panel coverage vary by country and seller. Obtain the policy in writing before purchase, especially when buying clearance stock or an imported suffix. Ask who handles a panel fault, whether transport is covered and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund.
Installation and wall-mounting
Buy a wall mount only after confirming the exact television’s VESA pattern, screw size, wall type and load rating. A mount advertised for “65-inch OLED” is not automatically suitable for every SKU. Measure the wall, locate studs or use an approved fixing system, leave room for cables and ensure the mount can tilt without stressing the panel. If the stand will be used, measure the furniture’s width and depth and check the supplied stand footprint.
A purchase process that avoids the common mistakes
- Record the full model code. Keep the retailer’s complete suffix, not just “C5,” “BRAVIA 8 II” or “S90F.”
- Match the screen size. Do not transfer brightness, panel or port information from a 55-inch review to a 65-inch purchase. Tom’s Guide’s 1,104-nit S90H result is explicitly a 55-inch sample.
- List your sources. Include consoles, PC, disc player, set-top box and streaming services.
- Mark required features. Separate must-haves such as Dolby Vision, VRR, a minimum number of HDMI 2.1 inputs and a particular app from nice-to-haves.
- Compare delivered cost. Include delivery, installation, wall mount, extended cover and the value of the retailer’s return window.
- Check the warranty territory. An imported television can have a different tuner, plug, software catalogue and service path.
- Inspect on arrival. Photograph the box, verify the model code and test every HDMI input before disposing of packaging.
Which model should you buy?
Pick the LG C5 when
- You want the safest all-round recommendation.
- Dolby Vision and webOS are important.
- Your household mixes films, television, consoles and PC gaming.
- You prefer a broad feature balance over a cinema-only or same-brand decision.
Pick the Sony BRAVIA 8 II when
- Film presentation and Sony processing are your first priorities.
- You watch a lot of broadcast or imperfectly compressed material.
- You have verified the local model’s gaming ports and HDR formats and they meet your needs.
Pick the Samsung S90F when
- You want the closest Samsung-branded replacement for an S90H.
- You already prefer Samsung’s interface and remote.
- The verified local price is meaningfully better than the LG C5 or Sony BRAVIA 8 II.
Use the LG C5 as the starting point, then move to Sony for processing or Samsung for continuity and value. The final decision should be made against the exact regional 65-inch SKU, its warranty and its delivered price—not a headline specification copied from another screen size or country.
