Atmos without rear speakers
What Hi-Fi describes crisp, precise sound, deep bass by soundbar standards and impressive standalone Atmos delivery. The Bar 9 can later be paired with wireless surrounds and a subwoofer, but its out-of-box presentation cannot reproduce the same rear-channel coverage as the Q990H. Virtualized height and side effects are also more dependent on room geometry than physically positioned satellites.

Choose it when the room dictates the hardware

Samsung HW-Q990D
The Q990D is the previous-generation Samsung flagship. RTINGS says it can deliver similar performance at a greatly discounted price. Room with space behind the sofa

Keep both rear speakers at similar heights and distances from the main seat; large asymmetries can make one side dominate.
Open-plan or narrow room
In an open plan, one side wall may be much farther away than the other and there may be no safe rear-speaker location. The Sonos Arc Ultra offers the cleanest staged approach, while the Sony Bar 9 avoids rear hardware entirely. Expect the physical room to limit any Atmos system’s precision, regardless of its channel count.
Ceiling and seating considerations
Up-firing height drivers rely on reflected sound. A reasonably flat, moderately reflective ceiling generally gives them a clearer path than a very high, vaulted or heavily absorbent ceiling. Setup steps that affect Atmos performance
- Confirm the signal path. Connect an Atmos-capable source to an HDMI eARC television or to a soundbar HDMI input that supports the required video mode. For 4K/120Hz, VRR or ALLM, check every link in the chain: source, cable, soundbar input and television port.
- Place the bar centrally. Keep it below the screen, with the front unobstructed. A cabinet edge or sound-absorbing grille can weaken dialogue and front height cues.
- Position the subwoofer. Start near the front wall, then move it in small increments if bass is boomy or thin. Corners increase output but can exaggerate room modes.
- Place rear speakers symmetrically. Aim for matching distance and height on both sides of the seating position. Do not hide them inside shelving or directly behind a high-backed sofa.
- Run the manufacturer’s calibration. Calibration cannot correct a speaker blocked by furniture, but it can compensate for distance and level differences. Re-run it after moving a satellite or subwoofer.
- Test with a known Atmos title. Use a source that explicitly reports Dolby Atmos, then check the television and player audio menus. “Surround” or “multichannel PCM” labels do not by themselves prove that an Atmos bitstream is reaching the system.

Ignoring unsupported formats
If your discs or local files use DTS, the Quad Suite 7 Pro is a poor match despite its stronger surround result. Check the audio formats in your actual library before paying for more speakers.
