Best Alternatives to the Marshall Bromley 150 for Home Parties (2026)

Short answer: The Sony ULT TOWER 5 is the best all-round alternative when you want strong bass, extensive microphone and DJ connectivity, and a lower equipment tier than Marshall’s Bromley 150. Choose the JBL PartyBox 130 for straightforward karaoke and familiar party controls. Choose Soundboks 4 when outdoor loudness is more important than a directly comparable specification sheet. Buy the Bromley 150 itself if 40-plus hours of rated battery life, IP55 protection, a replaceable battery and 360-degree sound are your priorities.

What the Marshall Bromley 150 offers

Marshall launched the Bromley 150 on 29 September 2026. It is a battery-powered party speaker designed to move between rooms, patios and other informal venues without relying on a mains outlet. Marshall positions it as its most portable party speaker, combining wheels and a built-in handle with lighting, karaoke inputs and a replaceable battery.

The headline figure is more than 40 hours of rated playtime. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independent endurance test, and actual runtime will vary with volume, lighting, wireless use and the condition of the battery. The battery is a replaceable lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) pack, so the speaker is not necessarily at the end of its useful life when the original battery eventually loses capacity.

Bromley 150 specification Marshall’s stated figure or feature What it means at home
Rated playtime 40+ hours Suitable for a full weekend of moderate-volume use, subject to playback conditions
Protection IP55 dirt and splash resistance Better protection against dust and water splashes than an indoor-only speaker, but not a submersible product
Wireless Bluetooth 5.3 with Auracast support Modern Bluetooth connectivity and the potential to share compatible broadcasts
Sound presentation True Stereophonic 360-degree sound People around the speaker can hear a more consistent presentation than with a forward-facing cabinet
Amplification 90 W woofer amplifier plus two 55 W full-range amplifiers Three amplifier sections drive the low and full-range drivers; this is not an independent loudness test
Frequency range 42 Hz–20 kHz Marshall’s specified operating range, measured under the company’s own conditions
Maximum sound-pressure level 97 dB at 1 m A manufacturer maximum-SPL specification, not a guarantee of identical output in every room
Weight 6.3 kg Relatively manageable for stairs and room changes, with wheels and a handle reducing carrying effort
Inputs Two inputs for microphones or instruments Useful for karaoke, announcements, guitar or another live source

These figures come from Marshall’s 2026 product specification and launch material. They should be read as rated specifications rather than laboratory comparisons with Sony, JBL or Soundboks. The 360-degree design is particularly useful when guests stand on several sides of the speaker; a conventional forward-facing party speaker can sound louder and clearer in front than behind or beside it.

Which alternative should you buy?

If your priority is… Best match Main compromise compared with Bromley 150
Value, bass and flexible wired connections Sony ULT TOWER 5 About 20 hours of rated battery life, 12.7 kg weight and IPX4 protection only when vertical
Karaoke with simple controls JBL PartyBox 130 Exact current runtime, protection rating and included accessories depend on the regional listing
Very high outdoor volume Soundboks 4 The available product information does not establish a complete, standardized Bromley comparison
Longest rated runtime, splash resistance and a replaceable battery Marshall Bromley 150 It may not be the lowest-cost route if you only need occasional indoor karaoke

There is no single “better” speaker across all of these criteria. Battery runtime, input types, weather protection, portability and sound coverage solve different party problems. Decide which problem you actually have before comparing headline wattage or lighting effects.

Sony ULT TOWER 5: the strongest direct alternative

Why it is a good Bromley substitute

Sony’s SRS-ULT500, marketed as the ULT TOWER 5, is the most complete alternative for a buyer who wants deep bass and several ways to connect equipment. Sony lists approximately 20 hours of battery life, Bluetooth 5.3, lighting, stereo pairing and party-chain functions. Its product material describes 360-degree party sound and use for DJ sessions or microphone events.

The wired connections are its clearest advantage over many portable party speakers. Sony lists RCA input, XLR input, USB-A and USB-C ports, plus a 6.3 mm microphone input. RCA suits a television, mixer or older audio source; XLR is useful with a compatible microphone or professional audio device; and the 6.3 mm jack accepts many standard wired microphones. Confirm the signal type and cable you need before buying, because an XLR socket does not automatically mean that every microphone can be connected without the correct cable or adapter.

The trade-offs

Sony’s approximately 20-hour rating is roughly half Marshall’s 40-plus-hour rating. Both figures are manufacturer estimates, so the difference should not be treated as a controlled endurance test, but it matters if you want to leave a speaker playing through a long event without charging. Sony’s listed weight is approximately 28 lb (12.7 kg), almost twice the Bromley 150’s 6.3 kg specification. That makes the Sony a less convenient choice for carrying up stairs or moving repeatedly between rooms, even if its cabinet has a usable transport design.

Its protection is IPX4 when the speaker is vertical. IPX4 indicates resistance to splashing from any direction under the stated test conditions; it does not provide the dust protection included in Bromley’s IP55 rating, and Sony’s orientation qualification matters. Keep the SRS-ULT500 upright and away from sustained rain, standing water and dusty work areas.

Who should choose it

  • Choose the Sony when you will connect microphones, a television, a mixer or other wired sources.
  • Choose it when bass impact and lighting are more important than minimum weight.
  • Choose it when a roughly 20-hour rated session is sufficient and you can recharge between events.
  • Look elsewhere when you need dust resistance, a replaceable battery or a genuinely lightweight speaker.

JBL PartyBox 130: the practical karaoke option

What JBL’s listing establishes

JBL’s PartyBox 130 page describes a rechargeable party speaker with a dynamic lightshow, a foldable ergonomic handle and inputs for guitar, microphones and a television. Those connections map closely to the things people actually do at a house party: sing, make announcements, play along with a guitar or route TV audio to a larger speaker.

The foldable handle is useful when the speaker must be moved through a hallway or stored in a cupboard. A lightshow can also be controlled more easily when the speaker is being used as a single karaoke station rather than as part of a larger multi-speaker system.

Do not borrow the PartyBox 310’s battery claim

JBL’s PartyBox 310 page gives a family reference of up to 18 hours of music playback and includes a built-in karaoke mode. That figure belongs to the 310; it must not be transferred to the PartyBox 130. The current regional PartyBox 130 listing should be checked for its exact battery runtime, water-resistance rating and what accessories are included. JBL product names and bundles can vary by country, so verify the model number on the box and the support page before purchasing.

When it beats the Sony or Marshall

The JBL is a sensible choice when your party is centered on karaoke and you prefer dedicated guitar and microphone controls over a long list of studio-style connections. It is also a better fit than the Bromley 150 when you want the simplest path from speaker to TV, microphone and lightshow. It is not the right choice if you require a confirmed 40-plus-hour runtime, IP55 dust-and-splash protection or a replaceable battery; those are Bromley features, not established PartyBox 130 features.

Soundboks 4: for outdoor loudness first

Soundboks 4 is a plausible alternative for readers whose main requirement is very high outdoor volume and long-running battery use. It is designed as a Bluetooth party speaker and is commonly considered for gardens, outdoor gatherings and locations where the speaker must carry farther than a typical living-room system.

The available product information does not provide enough standardized figures to compare Soundboks 4 precisely with Bromley 150 on maximum SPL, runtime, dimensions, protection or inputs. Treat it as a loudness-oriented option rather than as a confirmed specification winner. Check the current Soundboks retail listing for the battery system, charging arrangement, weight, weather rating and microphone or instrument compatibility before ordering.

For a house party in a modest room, maximum outdoor output may bring disadvantages: more sound reflected from walls, greater disturbance to neighbours and less useful volume range for conversation. Soundboks 4 makes most sense when the event is genuinely outdoors or when you need headroom in a large open area.

Battery, wheels and protection: what matters in a house?

Do you need a battery speaker?

You need a battery speaker when outlets are inconvenient, the party moves between rooms, the patio is far from the house or you want to avoid a power cable across a walkway. You may not need one if the speaker will remain beside a wall socket for every event. A mains-connected system can be cheaper or more powerful for a fixed location, but it loses the quick-placement advantage of the Bromley, Sony, JBL and Soundboks designs.

Runtime ratings are not directly interchangeable. Volume, bass boost, lighting brightness, wireless codec, microphone use and battery age all affect consumption. Plan a charging point and keep the supplied charger available even if the rated runtime appears to cover the whole event.

Are wheels worth paying for?

Wheels help when the speaker is heavy, the floor is smooth and the route has no stairs. They do not remove the need to lift the cabinet into a car, over a threshold or onto uneven ground. Bromley’s 6.3 kg specification means its handle may be enough for many indoor moves; Sony’s approximately 12.7 kg weight makes a wheeled or carefully designed transport solution more valuable. Check handle clearance and wheel size in person if your route includes carpet, door thresholds or gravel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much protection is enough?

  • IP55 Bromley 150: dust-protected and resistant to water jets under the IP test conditions. It is not waterproof for immersion.
  • IPX4 Sony ULT TOWER 5: splash protection when vertical, with no dust-protection rating stated in the cited specification.
  • JBL PartyBox 130: confirm the current regional water-resistance rating; the cited listing does not establish one universal figure here.
  • Soundboks 4: verify the current listing before exposing it to weather.

Regardless of rating, keep ports covered when they are not in use, avoid placing any speaker in a puddle and dry the cabinet before storage. A protective cover is worthwhile for dust, accidental knocks and long-term storage even when a speaker has an IP rating.

Karaoke and microphone setup

Choose the input before choosing the speaker

For karaoke, list every source you intend to use: a phone for backing tracks, a television or tablet for lyrics, one or more microphones, and possibly a guitar. Bromley provides two microphone-or-instrument inputs. Sony provides RCA and XLR, USB-A and USB-C, and a 6.3 mm microphone input. JBL lists guitar, microphone and TV inputs. These are different connection sets, not interchangeable labels.

  1. Put the speaker on a stable surface with its microphones behind or to the side of the main sound path.
  2. Pair the playback phone or connect the TV, mixer or other source using the socket specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Connect the microphone with the correct 6.3 mm, XLR or instrument cable; do not force an adapter into an incompatible input.
  4. Set music volume first, then raise microphone gain until speech or singing is clear without feedback.
  5. Ask the singer to stand in front of the speaker, not directly beside or behind a microphone aimed at the cabinet.
  6. Test the loudest expected chorus before guests arrive. Feedback that is absent during a quiet sound check can appear when the microphone is moved close to the speaker.

A wireless microphone is not automatically included with any of these models. Budget for a microphone, the right cable and, if needed, a mixer or adapter. Sony’s XLR and 6.3 mm options provide more flexibility for a small performance setup; JBL’s explicitly listed guitar and microphone inputs make it a straightforward party-karaoke choice; Bromley’s two inputs cover a simple two-source arrangement.

Lighting, pairing and sound coverage

Lighting

Bromley 150, Sony ULT TOWER 5 and JBL PartyBox 130 all include lighting features in the cited product descriptions. Lighting can make a single speaker feel more like a party system, but it consumes power and can distract from lyrics or conversation. Treat lighting as a usability preference rather than evidence of better audio quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multi-speaker use

Sony lists stereo pairing and party-chain functions. These can expand coverage or create a wider stereo presentation when you own compatible units. Bromley’s Bluetooth 5.3 Auracast support is a notable wireless feature, but the receiving devices and exact Auracast workflow must also be compatible. Do not assume that any Bluetooth speaker can join an Auracast broadcast or that Auracast automatically creates a stereo pair.

360-degree versus forward-facing sound

Marshall specifies True Stereophonic 360-degree sound for Bromley 150, which is useful when guests surround the cabinet. Sony describes 360-degree party sound as well. A 360-degree design can reduce the need to aim the speaker at one seating area, while a forward-focused cabinet may deliver more direct output to people in front. Room shape, placement and reflections still matter more than a label when the speaker is used indoors.

Total ownership cost: plan for the accessories

Retail prices and stock change by country and date, so a timeless price ranking would be misleading. Compare the complete setup instead of the cabinet alone. A karaoke party may require:

  • One or two wired or wireless microphones.
  • An XLR microphone cable, 6.3 mm cable, RCA lead or instrument cable, depending on the chosen input.
  • A television, phone or mixer connection adapter where the source uses a different connector.
  • A speaker cover for storage and transport.
  • A replacement battery or approved charger when the model supports user-replaceable power components.

Bromley’s replaceable LiFePO4 battery can reduce long-term disposal compared with a sealed design, but confirm replacement availability and fitting instructions in your market. Sony’s extensive ports may reduce the need for a separate mixer in some setups, while JBL’s simpler party inputs may reduce setup time. The cheapest speaker becomes less attractive if you immediately need a mixer, unusual adapter or second battery.

Decision guide by party type

Small indoor birthday or living-room gathering

Choose JBL PartyBox 130 for uncomplicated karaoke and lightshow controls, or Sony ULT TOWER 5 if you need RCA, XLR and 6.3 mm microphone connectivity. Bromley is preferable when you want a lighter cabinet and more runtime than either cited alternative establishes.

All-day or multi-day event

Bromley 150’s 40-plus-hour rated runtime is the clearest fit, provided the event does not require charging a phone or other equipment from the speaker. Keep in mind that the figure is a rating and that high-volume bass and lighting reduce actual playtime.

Garden party with uncertain weather

Bromley’s IP55 rating provides the strongest stated dust-and-splash protection among the directly compared products. Sony’s IPX4 protection applies when vertical and is less suitable for dusty conditions. For JBL and Soundboks, verify the current regional weather rating before taking either outside.

Outdoor gathering where volume carries far

Investigate Soundboks 4 first, but validate its current specifications and local rules about noise. Bromley or Sony may be easier to manage in a residential garden where moderate volume and broad coverage matter more than maximum output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live guitar, announcements and two microphones

Start with the input map. Bromley has two microphone-or-instrument inputs; JBL lists guitar and microphone inputs; Sony adds XLR, RCA and a 6.3 mm microphone input. Select the model that accepts your actual cables without a chain of adapters.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Comparing wattage as if it were loudness

Amplifier wattage is not a standardized party-volume score. Bromley’s 90 W woofer and two 55 W full-range amplifier figures are manufacturer specifications, as are the other brands’ published figures. Compare measured SPL only when the test method, distance and conditions match.

Assuming an IP rating means waterproofing

IP55 and IPX4 describe specific test resistance, not permission to leave a speaker in rain. Use a cover, keep ports closed and move the cabinet indoors when weather worsens.

Using the wrong cable

XLR, RCA, 6.3 mm instrument and USB connections carry different signals and serve different purposes. Check the manual and source device before buying a cable; an inexpensive adapter cannot correct every level or wiring mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placing a microphone in front of the speaker

Feedback is caused by the microphone hearing amplified sound and feeding it back through the system. Put microphones behind the main speaker axis, lower gain before moving the microphone and test at performance volume.

Transferring a family model’s specification

The PartyBox 310’s up-to-18-hour statement does not establish PartyBox 130 runtime. Likewise, a feature on one regional listing may not appear in another bundle. Use the exact model and country listing when checking battery, accessories and protection.

Bottom-line recommendations

  • Best overall alternative: Sony ULT TOWER 5, for bass-focused playback and the broadest stated wired connectivity, if approximately 20 hours and 12.7 kg are acceptable.
  • Best karaoke-first alternative: JBL PartyBox 130, for guitar, microphone and TV inputs with a foldable handle and dynamic lightshow; verify regional specifications first.
  • Best outdoor-volume alternative: Soundboks 4, when carrying sound outdoors is the primary objective and you are prepared to confirm current specifications.
  • Best match for long runtime and protection: Marshall Bromley 150, with 40-plus-hour rated playtime, IP55 protection, 6.3 kg weight, wheels, 360-degree sound and a replaceable battery.
