Add a specialist app when you need a larger caller-ID database, reverse lookup, AI-based scam warnings, voicemail protection, or a separate phone number.
Truecaller is the strongest fit for broad caller identification and configurable blocking. Hiya is the better match for supported scam-risk and synthetic-voice signals. YouMail is the most useful when voicemail management, privacy scanning, and a second number matter as much as blocking. Availability depends on your country, carrier, iOS version, forwarding support, permissions, and subscription tier.

Start with the iPhone’s built-in call controls
Apple’s current iPhone documentation describes three layers of protection. The phone can identify incoming calls using Apple Business Connect, participating carriers, and supported call-identification apps. It can also screen unknown callers, silence unsaved numbers, and silence calls that the carrier marks as potential spam or fraud. Individual contacts and phone numbers can be blocked without installing anything.

Call Screening automatically answers calls from unknown numbers without interrupting you. The caller is asked for a name and reason, and the iPhone presents that information so you can decide whether to answer. This is useful when you receive legitimate calls from new doctors, schools, delivery drivers, recruiters, or businesses but do not want every unrecognized number to ring.

Silence: send every unsaved number to voicemail
Silence is the strictest built-in choice. Numbers that are not saved in Contacts are sent to voicemail instead of ringing. The call remains visible in Recents, so you can return a legitimate call, but you must check voicemail and recent calls regularly. Do not use this mode if you routinely depend on first-time callers and cannot afford to miss them.
Spam filtering: rely on the carrier’s reputation data
Spam filtering silences calls that your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud. It is convenient and requires no separate caller-ID database, but its accuracy depends on the carrier’s detection and on whether a number has already acquired a bad reputation. A new scam number can still ring, while a newly assigned legitimate number may be mislabeled.
How to configure Apple’s controls
- Open Settings and select Apps, then Phone.
- Review Call Screening and choose whether unknown callers should be asked for their name and reason before the phone rings.
- Review Silence Unknown Callers and enable it only if voicemail-first handling suits your work and personal contacts.
- Turn on the available Spam or carrier spam-filtering option if your carrier provides it.
- For a persistent nuisance number, open the Phone app’s Recents list, tap the information button beside the call, and choose the block option.
- To let a trusted person through while using strict silencing, save the number in Contacts and confirm that emergency or priority contacts are configured the way you want.
These controls are a sensible baseline because calls remain on the iPhone and carrier path you already use. They do not provide every specialist feature, however: Apple’s controls do not promise a universal reverse-lookup database, voicemail transcription, a second number, or an explanation of why an unfamiliar call is risky.

| Option | Primary behavior | Identification and screening | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Phone controls | Screen unknown callers, silence unsaved callers, or silence carrier-identified spam | Apple Business Connect, participating carriers, and supported identification apps | Results depend on Apple and carrier data; no separate voicemail or second-number service |
| Truecaller | Configurable spam, scam, and robocall blocking | Caller ID, reverse lookup, verified business identity, Assistant screening, and SMS filtering | Automatic blocking and Assistant screening are Premium features in the stated iOS 18 context; permissions must be enabled |
| Hiya | Automatic blocking based on number-reputation data | Caller context, lookup, Call Screener, AI Voice Detection, and Call Safety Alerts | Screening and AI functions require carrier call forwarding and are limited by country, language, carrier, plan, device, and operating system |

Truecaller: the broadest caller-ID and lookup toolkit
Choose Truecaller when identifying an unknown number is as important as blocking it. Its iPhone feature set includes caller ID, spam, scam, and robocall blocking, reverse phone lookup, Assistant call screening, verified business caller ID, and SMS filtering. Truecaller says more than 500 million people have experienced its service; that is a company-stated community figure, not an independent measurement of blocking accuracy.
What it does well
- Large identification database: a caller can be labeled with a person, business, or spam category before you answer.
- Reverse lookup: you can search a number after a missed call rather than relying only on the incoming label.
- Business verification: verified identity can make a legitimate company call easier to distinguish from an impersonator.
- Assistant screening: an automated assistant can collect the caller’s purpose so you can decide whether to pick up.
- SMS filtering: text-message filtering extends protection beyond voice calls.
Installation and permission path
- Install Truecaller from the iPhone App Store and complete its account setup.
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable Truecaller’s identification and blocking switches. If an option is missing, update the app and iOS, then return to the same screen.
- Enable only the additional permissions you understand, such as contacts or notification access, and review the App Store privacy label before accepting.
- Place a test call from a known nuisance number or use a safe test number to confirm that identification and blocking behave as expected.
Truecaller states that automatic spam blocking and Assistant screening are Premium features in the iOS 18 context described on its iPhone page. The free tier may still provide identification or lookup, but do not assume that every blocking control is included without checking the current in-app plan shown in your country.
Who should choose it
Truecaller is the most complete fit for people who receive frequent calls from unfamiliar businesses, delivery services, recruiters, or international numbers and want context before answering. It is less suitable if you want all calls handled locally with no account, no additional permissions, and no subscription-dependent controls.

Hiya: reputation scoring and AI-voice signals
Hiya’s App Store listing focuses on caller names and context, automatic blocking based on phone-number reputation data, number lookup, and a Call Screener. It also advertises AI Voice Detection and Call Safety Alerts for screened calls. Those features target a specific problem: a caller may sound convincing even when the number has not yet accumulated enough reports to be labeled ordinary spam.
Recommended Free Tools
Eligibility and regional limits
The listing requires iOS 17.6 or later. Hiya says screening and AI features require carrier call forwarding and are available only in the United States and Canada, in English, French, or Spanish. Support can vary by carrier, plan, device, and operating-system version, so a compatible iPhone alone does not guarantee that screening will activate.
Price information shown in the listing
The US App Store listing accessed on October 20, 2026, showed in-app purchases of $3.99 per month and $24.99 per year. These are storefront figures for that market and date; taxes, introductory offers, renewal terms, and prices in other countries can differ. Confirm the subscription screen before starting a trial or enabling recurring billing.
Hiya AI Phone is a separate product
Hiya AI Phone should not be confused with every feature in the standard Hiya listing. Hiya describes the separate product as offering call summaries, transcripts, real-time scam protection, and synthetic-voice detection on iOS and Android. It is currently available only in the United States, starts with a 14-day free trial, encrypts call data, and says processed summaries, transcriptions, and recordings are not retained or used to train models. Those are the company’s stated handling practices; read the current privacy policy and App Store disclosures for the exact service you install.
Who should choose it
Hiya is a strong candidate for a US or Canadian user whose carrier supports forwarding and who wants scam-risk context or synthetic-voice warnings. It is a poor fit when you are outside those countries, need a language other than English, French, or Spanish, cannot use call forwarding, or have an older iOS release.
YouMail: voicemail protection and a separate number
YouMail combines free spam and robocall blocking with caller ID, scam-text protection, privacy scanning, and voicemail protection. Its value is not limited to deciding whether a call rings: it can organize the messages and calls that remain after filtering. YouMail says more than 15 million people trust the service, another vendor-stated adoption figure rather than an independent accuracy test.

What the free feature set covers
- Spam and robocall blocking: known nuisance calls can be intercepted before they reach you.
- Caller ID: incoming numbers can be labeled when YouMail has matching information.
- Scam-text protection: protection extends to certain unwanted messages, not only voice calls.
- Privacy scanning: the app can help identify privacy-related exposure or settings that need attention.
- Voicemail protection: voicemail handling is central to the service, which can be useful if you prefer screening by message instead of by ringing.
Advanced Protection and the second number
YouMail’s Advanced Protection adds screening for unknown callers and a second number. A separate number is useful for marketplace listings, dating, travel, job searches, freelance work, or a public business contact: you can publish it without exposing your personal line, then change or retire it if abuse increases. Advanced features are not the same as the free blocking tier, and the current price was not stated in the supplied product information, so check the in-app offer for your country.
Who should choose it
Choose YouMail when voicemail organization, privacy scanning, or number separation matters more than having the largest possible caller-ID database. Verify how calls are forwarded or routed by your carrier before moving an important line, and make sure callers can still leave messages in the way you expect.
Other apps listed by Apple
Apple’s App Store editorial page lists RoboKiller, Nomorobo, AT&T ActiveArmor, Textkiller, Numbo, and Getcontact alongside Truecaller, YouMail, and Hiya as options for telemarketer and robocall relief. Treat that page as an availability lead rather than proof that one app is best. Before installing any candidate, check four details:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Country and carrier: some services depend on a carrier integration or call forwarding that is unavailable in your market.
- iOS requirement: an app can appear in the store while requiring a newer iOS release than your iPhone supports.
- Current subscription: identify which functions are free, which require a trial, and which renew monthly or annually.
- Privacy label: review data collected, tracking disclosures, contact access, call-forwarding architecture, and retention statements.
Choose by the way you want unwanted calls handled
You want no new app or account
Use Apple’s Call Screening first. It asks unknown callers for a reason without automatically sending every unsaved number away. If even that interruption is too much, use Silence and check voicemail on a schedule. Add carrier Spam filtering when it is available.
You need caller identity and reverse lookup
Start with Truecaller. Its combination of caller ID, reverse lookup, verified business labels, and configurable blocking addresses both the incoming call and the missed-call investigation afterward. Confirm the Premium requirement for automatic blocking and Assistant screening before subscribing.
You are worried about AI-generated or recorded voices
Consider Hiya where its Call Screener, AI Voice Detection, and Call Safety Alerts are supported. Confirm US or Canadian availability, language, carrier forwarding, iOS 17.6-or-later compatibility, and the exact product name: Hiya AI Phone is a separate service from the standard app listing.

You want voicemail and a public-facing second line
Consider YouMail. Its Advanced Protection can screen unknown callers and provide a second number, while the core service focuses on voicemail protection and spam handling. Check forwarding behavior and pricing before moving a number used for work or two-factor authentication.
You receive many legitimate first-time calls
Prefer screening over blanket silencing. Call Screening, Truecaller Assistant, or a supported YouMail screening feature can collect a reason for the call, allowing a doctor, school, customer, or recruiter to identify themselves without giving every robocall an immediate path to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and call-routing trade-offs
A blocker can work in several ways, and the mechanism affects both privacy and reliability. A local or carrier label may simply classify the incoming number. An interactive screener answers on your behalf and exchanges audio or speech with the caller. A voicemail service may forward calls to another system so it can record, transcribe, categorize, or protect the message. A second-number service creates an additional identity that must be secured like your primary line.
Questions to answer before enabling a service
- Does the app need access to Contacts, call identification, notifications, or SMS?
- Does it require unconditional or conditional carrier call forwarding?
- Where are recordings, transcripts, and summaries processed?
- How long are those materials retained, and are they used to train models?
- Can you disable the service and restore the original voicemail path without losing messages?
- Which controls stop working when a subscription ends?
Hiya AI Phone says it encrypts call data and does not retain or use processed summaries, transcriptions, and recordings to train models. That statement applies to the separate Hiya AI Phone product as described by Hiya, not automatically to every Hiya feature. For other services, rely on the current App Store privacy label and privacy policy rather than assuming that a caller-ID label means no data leaves the phone.
A setup checklist that avoids missed legitimate calls
- Save essential contacts first. Add doctors, schools, employers, delivery services, family members, and building management before enabling a silence rule.
- Start with the least disruptive control. Try Call Screening or carrier Spam filtering before sending every unknown caller directly to voicemail.
- Enable one identification source at a time. If several apps label calls simultaneously, conflicting categories can make troubleshooting difficult.
- Test a known safe number. Ask a trusted person to call while the screen is locked and verify whether the call rings, is screened, or goes to voicemail.
- Leave yourself a test voicemail. Confirm that recordings, notifications, transcription, and callback behavior work before relying on the service.
- Review blocked and silenced calls weekly. Legitimate callers sometimes use new numbers, temporary numbers, or numbers that have recently changed owners.
- Record subscription renewal dates. Cancel trials through the Apple subscription settings if you do not want automatic renewal.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app is installed but does not identify calls
Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification and confirm that the app’s switches are enabled. Restart the iPhone after changing the permission, update iOS and the app, and check whether another identification extension is taking precedence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Screening is unavailable
Check the service’s country, language, carrier, plan, and iOS requirements. Hiya’s screening and AI functions specifically require carrier call forwarding and are limited to the United States and Canada. A carrier that blocks or restricts forwarding can prevent the feature from activating even when the app installs normally.
Best Value
A legitimate call was silenced or blocked
Look in Recents, voicemail, and the app’s blocked or spam folder. Save the caller’s number, mark it as not spam when that control exists, and adjust from blanket Silence to screening if you regularly receive calls from unsaved numbers.
Voicemail stopped working after enabling an app
Temporarily disable the app’s forwarding or voicemail integration and place a test call from another phone. If voicemail returns, contact the carrier or app support with the forwarding state and the time of the test. Do not leave an important line in an unknown forwarding state.
Spam calls still get through
No service can identify every new or spoofed number. Add the carrier’s Spam filter to a specialist app, block repeat numbers manually, and avoid interacting with robocall prompts. If a service claims a large user community, treat that as an adoption claim rather than a guaranteed blocking rate.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The product pages and App Store listings provide feature descriptions, eligibility rules, prices shown at a particular time, and vendor-stated adoption figures. They do not establish an independent, head-to-head blocking-rate winner. Truecaller’s “over 500 million” figure, YouMail’s “more than 15 million” figure, and Hiya’s US App Store rating of 4.5 stars from 238K ratings are useful context about reported reach or storefront reception, not controlled measurements of how many unwanted calls each service stops for your number.
Real-world performance changes with geography, carrier reputation feeds, number spoofing, language, iOS permissions, forwarding configuration, and whether a scam number is new. Judge a service by the behavior you need—screening, silencing, voicemail diversion, identification, or a second line—and verify that behavior on your own iPhone before moving all calls to it.
Bottom line
Use Apple’s built-in Call Screening, Silence, and carrier Spam controls as the no-install baseline. Pick Truecaller for the broadest caller-ID, lookup, and configurable blocking toolkit; Hiya for supported scam-risk and AI-voice signals; and YouMail for voicemail protection, privacy scanning, and a separate number. Check country, carrier forwarding, iOS version, privacy disclosures, and subscription requirements before committing, and begin with screening rather than blanket silencing if missing a legitimate first-time caller would be costly.
