Best alternatives to the Honor 8.4-inch OLED tablet: compact AMOLED and modern OLED options

HONOR MagicPad 2 is the best overall alternative if OLED contrast, Android performance and battery life matter more than matching an 8.4-inch footprint. If the compact size is non-negotiable, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is the closest documented match: it combines an 8.4-inch, 2560×1600 Super AMOLED display with 359 ppi. However, that Samsung is a legacy used-device purchase, so battery condition, software version, connectivity variant and warranty matter as much as the screen.

There is no single current tablet that reproduces every part of the brief. Newer HONOR models are generally much larger, and OLED availability varies by generation. MagicPad 3 should not be assumed to have OLED, while the newer MagicPad 4 is documented with a 12.3-inch OLED panel but may not be sold in every region.

At a glance: which alternative fits your priority?

Model Display evidence Performance, battery or charging evidence Best use Main trade-off
HONOR MagicPad 2 OLED; much larger than 8.4 inches Tom’s Guide described strong performance and battery life in its 5 September 2024 review Modern Android use where OLED quality is the priority Does not preserve the compact form factor
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 8.4-inch, 2560×1600 Quad HD Super AMOLED, 359 ppi Current battery condition and software state depend on the individual used unit Closest match for size and AMOLED technology Old model; support, battery health and warranty must be checked
HONOR MagicPad 4 12.3-inch OLED, 3000×1920, up to 165Hz The cited comparison does not provide battery or charging figures Newer, larger OLED experience where officially available Regional availability and size differ from the 8.4-inch brief
HONOR MagicPad 3 Expert Reviews reports that this generation drops OLED The cited material does not establish a battery or charging figure Only a candidate after checking the exact regional configuration Do not buy it expecting OLED without model-level verification
HONOR Pad 8 12-inch 2K FullView LCD 7,250mAh battery and 22.5W charging Large-screen value and media use LCD and substantially larger, so it is not a compact OLED substitute

The table separates two different goals: preserving the OLED experience and preserving the small size. The MagicPad 2 wins the first goal among the modern options described here; the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 wins the second, but only as an older device.

Why finding a direct replacement is difficult

The phrase “Honor 8.4-inch OLED tablet” does not identify a confirmed current HONOR model in the available product records. The exact official model name and retail status behind that description remain unresolved. That matters because a replacement can fail in two ways: it can have the right panel technology but be too large, or it can be small enough but old enough that batteries, software and connectivity are liabilities.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HONOR’s official comparison material lists current tablet displays at 12.1, 12.3 and 13.3 inches. Those diagonals are considerably larger than 8.4 inches, changing one-handed use, bag space and the amount of screen visible in portrait orientation. Consequently, a buyer should decide whether “OLED” or “8.4 inches” is the hard requirement before choosing a model.

What counts as a genuine alternative?

  • Panel match: OLED or AMOLED should be confirmed for the exact model and region. Product-family names are not enough.
  • Size match: An 8.4-inch device is a compact tablet. A 12-inch or larger model may be better for split-screen work but cannot reproduce the same portability.
  • Modernity: A current tablet generally offers a safer software and battery outlook; a legacy tablet can still be the right dimensional match if its condition is verified.
  • Total ownership: Include the tablet’s condition, replacement-battery risk, charger, accessories, warranty and regional support—not just the display specification.

Best modern OLED choice: HONOR MagicPad 2

HONOR MagicPad 2 is the strongest sourced overall alternative for readers who want an OLED Android tablet with contemporary performance. Tom’s Guide reviewed it on 5 September 2024 and characterized it as an OLED Android tablet with good performance and battery life. Those are the two attributes most likely to make an older compact tablet feel limiting: image quality remains a priority, while current hardware makes multitasking and demanding apps less compromised.

Why it is the default recommendation

OLED is valuable on a tablet because the panel technology can deliver high contrast, with dark areas appearing genuinely dark rather than relying on a backlight. The supplied review specifically validates the combination of OLED, performance and battery life for MagicPad 2. It therefore preserves the central visual experience while moving to a newer Android platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compromise is physical scale. MagicPad 2’s display is much larger than 8.4 inches, so it is not a pocketable or one-handed replacement. Buyers should expect a device suited to two-handed reading, video, gaming or desk use rather than the compact handling associated with the original brief.

Who should choose it

  • Choose MagicPad 2 when OLED contrast is more important than matching the original diagonal.
  • Choose it when you want the reassurance of a modern product rather than a used legacy tablet.
  • Choose it for media, games and multitasking where the review’s performance and battery observations address the main concerns.

What to verify before ordering

  1. Confirm that the listing identifies MagicPad 2 itself, not MagicPad 3, MagicPad 4 or another HONOR tablet.
  2. Check the display technology in the exact regional specification; do not infer it from a family name.
  3. Verify local stock, delivery, warranty terms and included charger, because availability is region-dependent.
  4. Compare the physical dimensions with your bag, stand and preferred reading position. The larger panel is the defining compromise.

Closest size-and-panel match: Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is the closest documented match to an 8.4-inch OLED brief. Its specification record lists an 8.4-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 2560×1600 resolution and 359 ppi. No other option in the supplied material matches both the diagonal and AMOLED panel so directly.

Why the specification still matters

At 8.4 inches, the tablet remains genuinely compact. The 2560×1600 resolution and 359 ppi figure indicate a dense display suited to sharp text and detailed images, while Super AMOLED supplies the requested panel type. For someone replacing a small OLED tablet primarily because of size, this is the most faithful route.

The age penalty

The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is an old model and should be treated as a legacy or used-device option. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether a particular unit has a worn battery, a damaged panel, a missing charger or an unsuitable mobile-radio variant. Software support also depends on the Android version installed and what the seller can demonstrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Used-device inspection checklist

  1. Identify the exact variant: Confirm whether the listing is Wi-Fi or LTE and record the model number before paying.
  2. Check Android status: Ask for the installed Android version and confirm that the apps you need still support it.
  3. Test battery behavior: Request a charge-and-use demonstration if possible. Rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns or heat under light use are warning signs.
  4. Inspect the AMOLED panel: Display a white, black and mid-gray image to look for burn-in, dead pixels, tinting or uneven brightness.
  5. Test ports and wireless features: Verify charging, speakers, cameras, Wi-Fi and, for LTE models, the cellular connection and SIM behavior.
  6. Get written warranty terms: A return window or seller warranty is particularly important when the battery is no longer new.

Buy the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 only when the compact dimensions are worth accepting legacy hardware and the individual unit passes these checks. It is the dimensional match, not the safest general-purpose modern purchase.

HONOR MagicPad 4: a newer OLED option, at a larger scale

HONOR’s official tablet comparison lists MagicPad 4 with a 12.3-inch OLED panel, 3000×1920 resolution and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. Those are the clearest newer-generation OLED figures in the supplied material. A high refresh rate can make scrolling and supported games appear smoother, although the benefit depends on software and settings.

MagicPad 4 is a candidate for readers who want a current OLED experience and can accept a much larger tablet. Its 12.3-inch diagonal is closer to a small laptop or large productivity tablet than to an 8.4-inch reader. It may also be unavailable in some countries, so regional sales status must be checked before treating it as a practical recommendation.

Questions to resolve for your region

  • Is MagicPad 4 officially sold where you live, with local warranty service?
  • Does the regional configuration retain the 12.3-inch OLED, 3000×1920 resolution and up-to-165Hz specification?
  • Which charger, keyboard or pen accessories are included or supported in that market?
  • Will the larger chassis fit your case, stand and travel routine?

If the answer to those questions is favorable, MagicPad 4 is the strongest documented route to a newer, high-refresh OLED HONOR tablet. It is not a substitute for compactness.

Why MagicPad 3 needs extra caution

Expert Reviews reports that MagicPad 3 “ditches the OLED display.” That makes it unsuitable as an automatic replacement for an OLED tablet. The model may still appeal for other reasons, but the display must be verified rather than inferred from the MagicPad name.

Configuration and regional differences can change what a retailer lists. Before buying, request the exact panel type in writing or compare the model’s official regional specification. If OLED is the reason you are replacing the old tablet, a listing that merely says “MagicPad” is not sufficient evidence.

HONOR Pad 8: sensible large LCD alternative, not an OLED replacement

HONOR Pad 8 takes a different approach. HONOR specifies a 12-inch 2K FullView display, a 7,250mAh battery and 22.5W charging. Those figures make it a reasonable large-screen or value-oriented tablet, especially for video, browsing and reading at home.

Its panel is LCD, not OLED, and its 12-inch footprint is substantially larger than 8.4 inches. That means it should be selected only when screen area, battery capacity and charging are more important than OLED contrast and compact handling. Calling it an OLED replacement would set the wrong expectation.

Comparing the alternatives by the decision that matters

Panel technology and image quality

MagicPad 2 and MagicPad 4 are the modern OLED choices documented here. The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 uses Super AMOLED, which satisfies the compact AMOLED requirement. Pad 8 uses LCD, and MagicPad 3 has been reported as dropping OLED. Always match the panel statement to the exact model and region.

Portability and screen area

The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is the only option with a documented 8.4-inch diagonal. MagicPad 2 is much larger, MagicPad 4 is 12.3 inches, and Pad 8 is 12 inches. The larger devices provide more room for split-screen work and media controls, but they occupy more bag space and require two-handed use more often.

Performance and software horizon

Tom’s Guide’s MagicPad 2 review specifically reports good performance. The supplied material does not provide a processor model or a quantified software-support period, so do not use an unverified chip or update promise to distinguish the tablets. For the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, the relevant risk is age: confirm the installed Android version and app compatibility on the exact used unit.

Battery and charging

MagicPad 2 is described as having good battery life, but no capacity figure is established here. Pad 8 has the clearest battery and charging specification: 7,250mAh and 22.5W. MagicPad 4’s cited comparison does not provide a battery figure. With the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, condition matters more than its original specification because years of use can reduce runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessories, warranty and availability

The available records do not establish a common accessory bundle or a universal warranty for these models. Treat accessories and support as market-specific. Newer HONOR tablets may be easier to buy with a current warranty in some regions, while the Samsung model is more likely to be sold second-hand. Confirm stock, return rights, charger compatibility and accessory pricing before comparing the headline tablet price.

Total price

No reliable current prices are established in the supplied material. Prices for new, imported and used units can change by country and condition, so compare live listings only after identifying the exact model, storage, connectivity variant, warranty and delivery cost.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Set your non-negotiable: Choose “OLED/AMOLED” or “8.4-inch compact size” as the primary requirement. If both are mandatory, start with the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and accept the used-device checks.
  2. Choose the generation: Pick MagicPad 2 for a modern OLED Android experience, investigate MagicPad 4 for a larger newer OLED panel, and exclude MagicPad 3 unless its display is explicitly confirmed.
  3. Measure your current setup: Compare the tablet’s stated diagonal and chassis dimensions with your case, stand, bag and usual reading distance.
  4. Validate the regional listing: Check the model name, panel technology, connectivity version, charger and warranty on the page for your country.
  5. Evaluate condition: For the Samsung tablet, inspect battery, AMOLED uniformity, ports, wireless functions and Android version before purchase.
  6. Calculate ownership cost: Add shipping, taxes, a suitable charger, keyboard or pen accessories and the risk of an early battery replacement.
  7. Use a return window: Test brightness, touch accuracy, speakers, charging and your essential apps immediately after delivery.
