Microsoft Copilot is the closest direct substitute for Gemini on a Windows PC. It can be summoned with the Copilot key or Windows+C, and Microsoft documents voice activation, screenshot questions, file search, web-page context, Copilot Vision and Windows Settings guidance. Choose Claude Desktop when your work is primarily file-based, ChatGPT for a broad general assistant, Perplexity for research with citations, or Microsoft Foundry Local if you are a developer building a local-model experience.
These recommendations describe documented workflows rather than a controlled speed, accuracy or satisfaction test. Feature rollouts, plans and regional availability can change, so verify the current offer before committing to an app.

Which Gemini alternative should a Windows user choose?
Your best choice depends on what you mean by a desktop assistant. If you want an assistant that feels part of Windows, start with Microsoft Copilot. If you need an agent that works through a collection of documents, Claude Desktop is the most targeted option in the available evidence. ChatGPT for Windows is the broad, general-purpose choice, while Perplexity for Windows is aimed at research and cited web answers. Microsoft Foundry Local is different: it is a developer platform for running models locally, not a ready-made consumer replacement.

What the Gemini Windows app sets as the baseline
Google announced the Windows app on September 10, 2026. The announcement describes access to AI help from the desktop with a simple keyboard shortcut. The app uses Alt+Space, can draft project summaries from Gmail and Google Drive, and can create images and videos. Google says it is available globally for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Google’s help documentation lists these minimum requirements:
| Requirement | Documented value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or later | Applies to the Windows app |
| Account | Personal or managed Google account | Your organization may apply its own management rules |
| Memory | 8 GB of RAM | Google’s 2026 requirement |
| Storage | At least 200 MB of disk space | Google’s 2026 requirement |
| Connection | Stable internet connection | The app’s documented requirement |
The documented feature set includes quick answers, drafting, summarization, brainstorming, coding help and image analysis. Those capabilities explain why a substitute must be judged on more than whether it has a Windows installer. The useful comparison is how quickly you can summon it, what it can see, which files or services it can use, how it supports research, and whether it is intended for ordinary users or developers.
Five criteria that matter in a Windows replacement
1. Native invocation
A desktop assistant earns its place by being available at the moment you need it. Gemini uses Alt+Space. Copilot documents both a dedicated Copilot key and Windows+C, plus an optional voice phrase. For the other apps, the existence of a Windows desktop app is documented, but the supplied evidence does not establish a universal system-wide shortcut. Check the current app documentation if a keyboard-first workflow is essential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. File and screen context
Ask whether the assistant can work from the material already on your screen. Copilot’s documented features include file search, screenshot questions, web-tab context and Copilot Vision. Claude is the most clearly file-oriented alternative in the available comparison because it is paired with a Cowork file agent. The evidence does not establish identical file or screen features for ChatGPT or Perplexity, so do not assume that an app’s general chat capability includes desktop context.
3. Ecosystem connections
Gemini’s Windows baseline includes project summaries from Gmail and Google Drive. Copilot is the natural candidate when your work is centered on Windows and Microsoft services. A desktop app alone does not prove access to every account, file type or enterprise tenant; managed accounts can have different permissions. Test the exact account and data sources you intend to use.
4. Research and citations
Perplexity is the research-first option in this comparison, specifically because its documented positioning emphasizes cited web answers. That is useful when you need traceable sources rather than an uncited draft. No controlled benchmark here establishes that it is more accurate than the other assistants, so treat citations as a workflow feature, not a guarantee that every answer is correct.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
5. Consumer-ready versus developer-oriented
Copilot, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT for Windows and Perplexity for Windows are presented as user-facing apps. Foundry Local serves developers who want to build local-model experiences. Selecting a developer platform because it sounds more technical can add setup and integration work that a normal desktop assistant avoids.

Microsoft Copilot: the closest direct substitute
Copilot is the strongest match for someone who wants an assistant integrated with Windows rather than a separate browser tab. Microsoft documents several ways to invoke it:
- Press the dedicated Copilot key on a compatible keyboard.
- Use the
Windows+Ckeyboard shortcut. - Enable and say the optional wake phrase “Hey, Copilot”; Microsoft Support documents that phrase for voice invocation.
Once open, the documented Windows-oriented workflows include asking questions about a screenshot, searching files, using context from a web tab, getting help with Windows Settings and using Copilot Vision. Those functions address the main reason people look for a desktop app: they let the assistant work from what is already on the PC instead of requiring you to copy everything into a browser conversation.
When Copilot is the right choice
- You want a single shortcut that is easy to remember and available across Windows.
- Your tasks involve Windows Settings, screenshots, files or a web page you are viewing.
- Your organization already uses Microsoft accounts and services.
- You prefer a consumer assistant over a toolkit for building your own model workflow.
Trade-offs to understand
Copilot is a cloud assistant tied to a Microsoft account, and Microsoft continues to change its feature rollout. A feature documented for one account, region or release may not appear everywhere at the same time. Treat the documented capabilities as a checklist to verify on your own installation, not as a promise that every user sees an identical interface.
Do not confuse the consumer Copilot app with Windows AI APIs. Microsoft says most Windows AI APIs require a Copilot+ PC, but that hardware requirement does not mean a Copilot+ PC is required to use the consumer Copilot app.
Claude Desktop: the file-work alternative
Choose Claude Desktop when the center of your work is a set of files rather than Windows controls. The March 1, 2026 comparison lists both a Windows desktop app and a Claude Cowork file agent. That combination makes it the most directly file-oriented alternative in the available evidence.

Good uses for a file-first workflow
- Organizing a project folder before asking for summaries or drafts.
- Working through several documents as one task instead of pasting them one at a time.
- Keeping the assistant focused on the contents of a local work set rather than on operating-system settings.
The evidence does not specify a single plan, price, file-size limit or identical Cowork availability for every Windows account. Confirm the current plan, supported file types, permissions and rollout status before moving a production workflow. If your decision depends on a particular automation, make that capability a pass/fail check during setup.
ChatGPT for Windows: the broad general assistant
ChatGPT for Windows is the general-purpose option in this group. A Windows desktop app is listed in the March 1, 2026 comparison, making it a reasonable choice when your tasks move among writing, brainstorming, coding and everyday questions rather than staying inside one ecosystem.
Its main advantage in this guide is breadth of use, not a documented Windows integration feature. The supplied evidence does not establish exactly which desktop functions, shortcuts, file tools or plan limits are available to every Windows user. Before standardizing on it, check whether the current release supports the context you need and whether your account’s plan includes that function.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose it when
- You want one assistant for varied personal or work tasks.
- You do not require Windows Settings help or a dedicated operating-system wake phrase.
- You are willing to verify feature parity instead of assuming that the desktop app matches every other version.
Perplexity for Windows: the research-first option
Perplexity is the clearest fit when your primary question is, “Where did this answer come from?” The comparison lists a Windows desktop app and describes its role as research with cited web answers. That makes it useful for gathering source-backed material, checking claims and starting a research trail from the desktop.
What to verify before relying on it
- Whether the current Windows desktop rollout is available in your region.
- Which citation and search features are included in your plan.
- Whether the app can access the pages, accounts or files your assignment requires.
Citations improve traceability, but they do not remove the need to open important sources and check context. No controlled test in the available evidence ranks Perplexity above the other assistants for factual accuracy, speed or answer quality.
Microsoft Foundry Local: for developers, not a consumer swap
Foundry Local belongs in this comparison because it addresses a different interpretation of “desktop AI.” Microsoft says Foundry Local can run on any Windows hardware. It is intended for developers building experiences around local models, not for someone who simply wants a polished assistant with a shortcut, chat window and ready-made integrations.

Use Foundry Local when
- You are developing an application that needs a local-model runtime.
- You need control over how an AI feature is embedded in your own Windows software.
- You understand that model selection, user interface, data handling and update behavior are part of your project.
If you only want to ask questions, summarize a document or get help with Windows, a consumer app will involve far less engineering. Foundry Local is a build-versus-buy decision, not a one-for-one replacement for Gemini’s user interface.
Copilot+ hardware: what is and is not required
Microsoft’s Windows AI documentation defines a Copilot+ PC as a category with an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS, 16 GB or more of RAM and specific system-on-chip designs. Microsoft also says most Windows AI APIs require Copilot+ hardware, while Foundry Local does not.
That distinction matters when comparing desktop assistants. The 40+ TOPS and 16 GB figures describe the hardware category for APIs; they are not a minimum specification for the consumer Copilot app. Do not reject a Windows computer solely because it is not a Copilot+ PC, and do not assume that owning one automatically unlocks every cloud feature in Copilot or another assistant.

Use this sequence to choose without relying on unverified rankings:
- Write down your three recurring tasks. Examples include Windows troubleshooting, summarizing a folder, drafting a report or finding cited sources.
- Mark the context each task needs. Note whether the assistant must see a screenshot, search local files, use a web tab, connect to a work account or run inside your own software.
- Match the context to the documented capability. Copilot leads for Windows, screen and Settings context; Claude leads for the documented file-oriented workflow; Perplexity leads for cited web research; Foundry Local is for development.
- Check account and rollout constraints. Confirm whether your personal or managed account, region, plan and current Windows release expose the feature.
- Run a representative trial. Use ordinary, non-sensitive material and the same prompt in each candidate. Record whether the required context was available and whether the output included the evidence or citations you need.
- Choose the smallest workflow that solves the problem. A consumer app is preferable when you need answers; a developer platform is justified when you are building a product.
Migration checklist for leaving Gemini
Switching apps is easier when you separate prompts from integrations. Before uninstalling or changing your default assistant:
- List the keyboard shortcut you use today. Gemini’s documented shortcut is
Alt+Space; Copilot’s documented options are the Copilot key andWindows+C. - Record which data sources matter: Gmail, Google Drive, local files, screenshots, browser tabs, Windows Settings or public web pages.
- Save reusable prompts in a plain text file so you can test the same wording in each app.
- Check whether your account is personal or managed. Organization policies can affect available features and data access.
- Confirm the app’s current plan and limits before moving a recurring workload.
- Keep a fallback method, such as a browser session, until the Windows app handles your representative tasks reliably.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every desktop app has the same Windows integration
A Windows installer does not prove that an assistant can read screenshots, search files, understand a browser tab or control Settings. Those capabilities are specifically documented for Copilot in this comparison. Verify them separately for other apps.
Best Value
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.

Treating a hardware label as a universal requirement
Copilot+ specifications apply to most Windows AI APIs, not automatically to the consumer Copilot app. Foundry Local is explicitly described as not requiring Copilot+ hardware.
Comparing plans by old screenshots or posts
Desktop releases, plan limits and regional rollouts change. The March 1, 2026 comparison establishes that Windows apps were listed for Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity, but it does not freeze their current feature sets. Check the live product documentation at the time you subscribe.
Confusing citations with guaranteed correctness
Perplexity’s research-oriented workflow can show cited web answers, but citations still need to be opened and evaluated. There is no controlled benchmark here proving that any candidate is categorically smarter, faster or more accurate.
Sending sensitive material before checking policy
The available evidence does not provide a like-for-like privacy or retention comparison. For personal, client or regulated data, review the current account terms and your organization’s policy before uploading files or using screen context.
Bottom-line recommendations by user type
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A shortcut-driven Windows assistant | Microsoft Copilot | Dedicated Copilot key, Windows+C, optional voice wake word and documented Windows context features |
| Working through a project folder | Claude Desktop | The comparison specifically lists its Windows app with the Claude Cowork file agent |
| One assistant for many kinds of tasks | ChatGPT for Windows | It is listed as a broad general-purpose Windows desktop option |
| Web research with visible sources | Perplexity for Windows | Its documented fit is research and cited web answers |
| Building your own local-model feature | Microsoft Foundry Local | It is a Windows development platform that Microsoft says can run on any Windows hardware |
For most Windows users replacing Gemini, test Copilot first because it most closely matches the summon-and-use desktop model. Move to Claude when files are the center of the job, to Perplexity when source citations are the priority, or to ChatGPT when you need a general assistant and do not depend on a specific Windows integration. Select Foundry Local only when you are deliberately building a software experience rather than choosing a ready-made desktop app.
