Short answer: there is no Formlabs resin-printer model established in the current product material as “Form Studio 1.” The evidence for this comparison covers the Form 4, so the recommendations below treat Form 4 as the reference system. Choose Form 4 when validated materials, predictable production and an integrated PreForm/Dashboard workflow are worth paying for. Choose the Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro for desktop capacity and 14K detail, the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 12K for detailed MSLA batch work at value pricing, or the Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K S when the largest possible parts or batch footprint matters more than a documented, Formlabs-style ecosystem.
First, resolve the “Form Studio 1” name
Formlabs’ current professional resin-printer material identifies Form 4 as the company’s professional desktop system. It describes PreForm for print preparation, Dashboard for printer management, an industry materials library, Low Force Display technology and an Open Material Mode. No separate printer called “Form Studio 1” is established in that material. The title therefore appears to combine or misname Formlabs products. If you meant a different Formlabs model, check the exact model before buying; resin profiles, vats, build platforms and service terms are not interchangeable assumptions.

The comparisons that follow use Form 4 as the control case because it is the documented current reference. The alternatives can match or exceed it on a particular axis—build area, pixel count or nominal speed—but none is shown in the available evidence to reproduce Formlabs’ complete validation, software and service package.

| Printer | Best fit | Published or reported specifications | Main qualification risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formlabs Form 4 | Lowest operational risk and the most documented workflow | Low Force Display; PreForm and Dashboard; validated Formlabs materials; Open Material Mode | Open Material Mode does not automatically provide validated profiles for competing resins |
| Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro | Large desktop capacity, high pixel density and hardware value | 223 × 126 × 230 mm build volume; 14K display; 16.8 × 24.8 μm pixels | Resin profiles, repeatability and maintenance become the buyer’s responsibility; TechRadar found automatic refill was not always reliable in testing |
| Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 12K | Detailed models and batch production on a value-oriented MSLA platform | 405 nm COB light with Fresnel collimating lens; 92% field uniformity; 0.5% astigmatism coefficient; 218.88 × 122.88 × 220 mm build volume; up to 150 mm/h reported speed | More process development than a validated Formlabs workflow |
| Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K S | Large prototypes, patterns and multi-part batches | 33 × 18.5 × 30 cm print volume; Phrozen OS | Available evidence does not establish Formlabs-equivalent material validation, service response or production reliability |
These are not like-for-like “better” and “worse” scores. They are different risk profiles. A printer with a larger vat can produce more parts per job, but a professional buyer must also account for profile development, failed-build handling, cleaning, curing, replacement films or vats, operator training and support response.

What Formlabs Form 4 actually offers
Validated production ecosystem
Formlabs positions Form 4 as a system rather than a bare MSLA machine. Its materials library, resin cartridges or containers, PreForm preparation software and Dashboard management are designed to work together. This matters when several operators share printers, when a job must be reproduced months later, or when a part is released against a dimensional or mechanical specification.
Formlabs reports a 98.7% print success rate for Form 4. The figure is a Formlabs claim from its 2025 white paper, measured by what Formlabs describes as an independent global leader in product testing. It is not a cross-brand benchmark and should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every geometry, resin, operator or environment.
Open Material Mode has a qualification cost
Open Material Mode permits the use of third-party materials, which prevents Form 4 from being a completely closed resin platform. The practical limitation is that competing materials may not have Formlabs-validated profiles. You may need to determine exposure, lift, supports, wash and cure settings, then lock those settings into a controlled process. For a regulated or customer-audited workflow, retain the resin lot, profile revision and validation samples as you would on any open machine.
Scale and installed base
Formlabs’ resin-printer overview says the company had sold more than 100,000 desktop and large-format resin printers as of its publication. That is a manufacturer-reported installed-base figure, not an independent market-share measurement. A large installed base can make it easier to find experienced operators and community knowledge, but it does not remove the need to verify regional service and consumables availability.
When Form 4 remains the sensible choice
- You need a validated resin profile and a repeatable handoff from CAD to print queue.
- Several printers or sites must be monitored through one management workflow.
- Downtime, operator intervention and failed-build investigation cost more than the initial hardware premium.
- You want Open Material Mode as an option but do not want every new resin to become an engineering project.
Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro: the desktop-capacity alternative
What the specification says
Anycubic lists a 223 × 126 × 230 mm build volume, a 14K display and 16.8 × 24.8 μm pixel dimensions. That combination gives the M7 Pro a larger desktop envelope than the Form 4 reference material establishes and a fine nominal pixel pitch for small features. TechRadar also lists the 223 × 126 × 230 mm build area and describes the printer as a high-volume, high-resolution option.

Why it appeals to production users
The M7 Pro is attractive when you want to fill a desktop vat with multiple parts, print taller assemblies without splitting them, or obtain high apparent detail without moving to a large industrial machine. Its value proposition is hardware capacity and resolution rather than a documented, end-to-end qualification program.
The operational trade-off
Anycubic’s published dimensions do not establish dimensional repeatability across resin brands, long print runs or multiple machines. You should plan to qualify each resin and maintain a controlled exposure profile. In independent hands-on coverage, TechRadar reported that the automatic resin-refill function was not always reliable during testing. Treat the refill feature as a convenience that needs supervision, not as an unattended-production guarantee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Who should buy it
- Small production shops that can own resin-profile development and routine maintenance.
- Designers who benefit from a larger desktop build area but do not require a vendor-validated material catalogue.
- Teams prepared to keep a manual refill procedure and verify the vat level before long jobs.
It is a poor fit if a failed build has a contractual or safety cost and there is no internal owner for process validation.
Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 12K: detailed MSLA at value pricing
Optical and build specifications
Elegoo documents a 405 nm COB light source paired with a Fresnel collimating lens, 92% field uniformity and a 0.5% astigmatism coefficient. Independent buying-guide coverage lists a 218.88 × 122.88 × 220 mm build volume, a 12K monochrome display and speeds of up to 150 mm/h. “Up to” is a manufacturer-style ceiling or reported maximum; actual throughput depends on layer height, exposure, resin viscosity, lift settings, support strategy and the number of layers in the job.
Where it makes sense
The Saturn 4 Ultra is a strong candidate for miniatures, dental-style study models, engineering prototypes and other work where fine XY detail and batch capacity matter. Its optical uniformity figures are useful indicators of the design goal, but they do not by themselves prove Formlabs-level dimensional consistency on your resin and geometry.

What you must supply around the printer
Plan for a resin test matrix, a dimensional coupon, a repeatable wash-and-cure recipe and inspection records. If parts are assembled into a product, check hole diameters, mating faces and thin-wall behavior at the beginning and end of a production run. The printer’s lower purchase cost, where available, does not replace this engineering work.

Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K S: choose it when part size is the constraint
Large-format capacity
Phrozen’s help-center specification lists a 33 × 18.5 × 30 cm print volume. That is the clearest differentiator in this group. It gives you room for large patterns, display prototypes, tooling masters or many smaller parts in one layer layout, reducing the need to split a model solely to fit the vat.
Software and unknowns
The machine uses Phrozen OS. The available material does not establish a Formlabs-equivalent library of validated third-party profiles, a comparable fleet-management layer, service-response performance or production reliability. Those are procurement questions, not advantages to assume. Ask the distributor for regional support contacts, spare-film and vat lead times, escalation procedures and references from shops running similar resins.
Large-vat responsibilities
A bigger format increases the consequences of contamination, failed supports and resin handling mistakes. Define a filtering and recovery procedure, keep enough resin to complete a job without mixing incompatible lots, and make sure your wash and cure equipment can physically accept the largest parts before committing to the printer.

How to choose by production requirement
Choose Form 4 for the lowest operational risk
Form 4 is the default for a team that values validated materials, documented software and a known support path over the lowest hardware or resin cost. It is also the easiest option to standardize when operators have different levels of resin-printing experience.
Choose the M7 Pro for desktop volume and pixel density
Select the Anycubic when 223 × 126 × 230 mm of capacity and 14K detail solve a real scheduling or geometry problem. Make the purchase conditional on an internal qualification plan and a manual fallback for the refill system.
Choose the Saturn 4 Ultra for detailed batch work
It fits teams that want a high-detail MSLA platform, the documented optical design and a reported 150 mm/h ceiling, while accepting that process control will be built in-house rather than inherited from a Formlabs-style ecosystem.
Choose the Sonic Mega 8K S for oversized parts
Its 33 × 18.5 × 30 cm envelope is the deciding factor when splitting a part would compromise appearance, tooling accuracy or assembly. Do not approve it on volume alone; verify service, materials and post-processing capacity first.
Material qualification: a repeatable procedure for non-Formlabs printers
Every open or less-validated platform should be introduced as a process, not as a plug-in appliance. Use the following sequence before accepting customer parts:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Define acceptance criteria. Record critical dimensions, tolerances, surface requirements, minimum wall thickness, mechanical targets and cosmetic defects that are unacceptable.
- Record the material. Log resin name, manufacturer, color, lot number, expiry date and storage condition. Do not assume a clear resin profile applies to an opaque or filled formulation.
- Run exposure coupons. Test the manufacturer’s starting profile and controlled exposure changes. Keep layer height, lift settings and temperature fixed while isolating one variable.
- Print a representative geometry. Include holes, pins, thin walls, overhangs, text and a large flat face. A simple calibration tile cannot reveal every production failure mode.
- Standardize washing and curing. Set solvent condition, wash duration, drying time and cure energy or time. Record when solvent is replaced; dirty wash liquid can look like a printer problem.
- Measure and inspect. Use the same gauges or optical inspection method each time. Check dimensions before and after cure because shrinkage and post-cure distortion can change the result.
- Release a profile revision. Store the validated settings with the resin lot policy, supported layer heights, support rules and operator notes. Retest after firmware, vat-film, optical or resin-batch changes.
- Monitor production. Keep a failure log with photos, layer number and corrective action. Trends such as edge lift or repeated support breaks are more useful than a single success.
Software, fleet control and traceability
Formlabs explicitly identifies PreForm for preparing prints and Dashboard for printer management. That pairing is important when a shop needs a common queue, job history and visibility across machines. The alternative specifications establish printer-side capabilities, but they do not establish equivalent fleet-management functions or validated integrations.
Before replacing Formlabs, map your actual workflow: who slices files, where profiles are stored, how jobs are named, how a failed print is quarantined, how resin lots are recorded and how firmware changes are approved. A cheaper printer can become more expensive if every operator keeps a private profile or if a customer cannot obtain a traceable build record.
Post-processing, maintenance and service questions
- Wash and cure: Confirm that your existing equipment fits the largest build from the selected printer and can deliver a repeatable cure process.
- Vats and release films: Keep spare films or vats on hand. A damaged release surface can stop production even when the printer electronics are healthy.
- Resin handling: Provide labeled containers, spill control, filtration and a disposal procedure suitable for uncured resin.
- Calibration ownership: Assign one person to approve profiles and document changes; otherwise settings drift between operators.
- Service coverage: Ask who performs repairs in your country, typical response times, stocked spare parts and whether support covers third-party resin.
- Firmware policy: Record the firmware version used for every qualification. Do not update a production printer immediately before a deadline without a verification print.
The evidence available for the Sonic Mega 8K S does not establish service response or reliability comparable with Formlabs. The same caution applies to any alternative whose vendor documentation does not publish equivalent data.

No neutral, cross-brand total-cost-of-ownership study or current geography-specific street-price dataset is established here. Prices, stock, firmware and promotional terms change by country and date, so a responsible comparison should not invent a single “cheapest” winner.
Request a quote that separates printer, vat or film, build platform, warranty, shipping, taxes, wash-and-cure hardware, resin, replacement parts and service labor. Then model cost per accepted part rather than resin price alone. Include engineering time for profile development, failed builds, cleaning, inspection and operator training. For a shop with expensive labor or contractual delivery dates, those recurring costs can outweigh the initial hardware difference.
Procurement checklist
- Confirm the exact model name; “Form Studio 1” is not established as a current Formlabs printer in the available product material.
- Write down the largest part and the number of parts required per week. Use the real nesting layout, not only the advertised volume.
- List every resin you intend to use and identify which profiles are vendor-validated, community-supplied or self-developed.
- Print a dimensional and cosmetic acceptance sample before signing off production.
- Verify wash-and-cure capacity, ventilation, waste handling and operator personal-protection procedures.
- Get written regional support contacts and spare-part lead times.
- Define profile ownership, firmware approval and build-record retention.
- Price consumables and downtime over the period you expect to operate the printer; do not rely on a one-day promotion.
Final recommendation
For the closest substitute to Formlabs’ reliability-oriented experience, Form 4 remains the control case: its documented materials ecosystem, PreForm and Dashboard workflow and Formlabs’ independently tested 98.7% success-rate claim are the benefits you are paying to preserve. The Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro is the strongest capacity-and-resolution alternative, provided you can qualify materials and supervise its refill system. Elegoo’s Saturn 4 Ultra 12K is compelling for detailed MSLA batches when you accept more in-house process work. Phrozen’s Sonic Mega 8K S is the practical choice when a 33 × 18.5 × 30 cm build envelope is the requirement that cannot be compromised.
