The closest official alternative is Sony’s PlayStation 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle: it repeats the numbered, original-PlayStation-inspired design approach, but it is a newer PS5 Pro package rather than a replacement for the 2014 PS4. If you want the gray anniversary look without buying another console, the 30th Anniversary DualSense controller is the practical choice. The original 20th Anniversary PS4 remains distinctive because of its 12,300-unit worldwide run, numbered hardware, Original Gray finish and complete matching accessory set.
Which alternative is best?
Your best choice depends on whether you value a numbered console, a usable current-generation system or simply the visual design. Sony’s 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle is the nearest official successor in theme. It has its own global run of 12,300 individually numbered consoles and includes a much larger collector package, but it is a later-generation, disc-free PS5 Pro with 2TB storage, not a 2014 PS4 in a different shell. The 30th Anniversary DualSense is the lower-footprint option: it gives you the original-PlayStation color scheme and anniversary branding as a controller-only collectible.

Why the 20th Anniversary PS4 is difficult to replace
Sony announced the 20th Anniversary PS4 on December 3, 2014, exactly 20 years after the original PlayStation launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. Sony limited production to 12,300 units worldwide, saying the number reflected that launch date. Every console carried an individual number from 1 through 12,300, giving the hardware an identity that a standard-color PS4 did not have.

The edition used the original PlayStation’s gray color, which Sony called “Original Gray.” The finish was applied consistently across the console and the included DUALSHOCK 4 controller, PlayStation Camera, vertical stand and mono headset. An embossed triangle, circle, cross and square design appeared on the console and on the controller touch pad. Sony supplied the set in a commemorative presentation box with a white anniversary sleeve.
Under the styling, this was a 500GB CUH-1100A A20 Series PS4. That detail matters when identifying a genuine set: a gray controller or a later anniversary accessory by itself is not the 20th Anniversary PS4. The model designation, numbered plate, matching components and original presentation packaging are the combination that defines the complete collectible.
Sony’s original recommended prices were ¥49,980 plus tax in Japan, US$499 in North America and €499 in Europe. Those figures describe the 2014 launch, not what a complete or incomplete unit should cost today. Condition, region, authenticity, missing accessories and packaging can materially change a resale transaction, and no current market valuation is established here.
The closest official successor: 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle
What the package includes
The 30th Anniversary Collection’s PS5 Pro bundle is the clearest later official counterpart to the numbered 20th Anniversary PS4. Sony uses design elements and a legacy color scheme inspired by the original PlayStation, and each console is individually numbered. Sony states that 12,300 numbered consoles are available globally, matching the production figure associated with the earlier anniversary PS4.
The bundle is substantially broader than the 2014 package. It includes a limited-edition PS5 Pro console, a DualSense Edge controller, a 30th Anniversary DualSense controller, a charging station, a console cover for a disc drive, a vertical stand and additional commemorative memorabilia. The two-controller configuration and the Edge controller make it both a display set and a premium current-generation gaming package.
How it differs from the 20th Anniversary PS4
The generation is the decisive difference. The 20th Anniversary model is a PS4 with a 500GB hard drive; the 30th Anniversary bundle is a PS5 Pro with 2TB of storage. The PlayStation Direct product listing describes the PS5 Pro as disc-free, with a compatible disc drive available separately. A buyer who expects an optical drive in the box would therefore be comparing the wrong configurations.
The PS5 Pro bundle supports backward compatibility and enhanced image quality for PS4 games, according to Sony’s listing. Sony also notes that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro. That makes the newer system a useful way to play much of a PS4 library while gaining a current-generation platform, but it is not an exact hardware substitute and should not be described as one.

Who should choose it
Choose the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle if you want the strongest combination of official scarcity, display value and current PlayStation use. It is appropriate for a collector who is comfortable owning a substantially larger and newer package and who understands that the disc drive is separate. It is a poor fit if your priority is specifically the original 2014 PS4 model, its 500GB specification or the compact completeness of the older accessory set.
The best no-console alternative: 30th Anniversary DualSense
The 30th Anniversary DualSense carries the original PlayStation color scheme in a single wireless controller. It is the clearest choice for someone who wants the anniversary design without acquiring a second console, a large bundle or a numbered PS5 Pro.
As a collector object, a controller has a smaller physical footprint and fewer components to authenticate than a complete console package. As a gaming accessory, it can be used with compatible PlayStation hardware rather than remaining purely decorative. It does not reproduce the 20th Anniversary PS4’s numbered console plate, 500GB system or commemorative box, so it should be viewed as a design alternative, not a direct replacement.

Choose by collector priority
If numbered hardware is the priority
The 20th Anniversary PS4 and the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle are the relevant choices because Sony documents numbered consoles for both. Their identical production count does not make them interchangeable: one is a 2014 PS4 and the other is a later PS5 Pro. Compare the generation, package size and intended use before treating the matching 12,300 figure as a deciding factor.
If the gray original-PlayStation look is the priority
The original 20th Anniversary PS4 is the most literal expression of that look because the console, DUALSHOCK 4, camera, stand and headset all use Original Gray. The 30th Anniversary DualSense captures the visual motif with much less space and cost exposure, while the PS5 Pro bundle applies a related legacy palette to a newer system and a larger set of accessories.
If you want a console you can use for current games
The PS5 Pro bundle is the only option here that is a later-generation console. Its 2TB storage, PS5 Pro hardware and stated PS4 backward compatibility give it a modern gaming role. Keep Sony’s compatibility qualification in mind: a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro, and the console is listed without a disc drive.
If you want the smallest display piece
The 30th Anniversary DualSense is the straightforward answer. It preserves the collection’s color language in one controller, avoids the storage and setup decisions of a console and can still serve as a usable accessory. It does not provide a numbered console or the matching accessory group that makes the 20th Anniversary PS4 a complete set.

How to identify a 20th Anniversary PS4 before buying
A listing that says “gray PS4” is not enough. Use Sony’s documented identifiers and package description as a checklist, then ask the seller to show the actual item rather than relying on stock photography.
- Confirm the model label. Ask for a clear photograph showing the CUH-1100A A20 Series designation. A different CUH code is evidence that the console is not the documented 20th Anniversary model.
- Inspect the numbered plate. The console should carry an individual number from 1 through 12,300. Request a sharp, legible image and make sure the plate is physically present rather than represented only by a typed number in the listing.
- Check the finish and motifs. Look for the Original Gray console and the embossed triangle, circle, cross and square treatment described by Sony. Compare the controller touch-pad detail as well.
- Verify the accessory set. The documented package includes a matching Original Gray DUALSHOCK 4, PlayStation Camera, vertical stand and mono headset. Ask which pieces are included, which are replacements and which are missing.
- Verify the packaging. Sony describes a commemorative presentation box and white anniversary sleeve. Photograph the exterior, interior and labels so you can distinguish original packaging from a generic replacement box.
- Document condition before payment. Request close-ups of the console surfaces, ports, controller grips, cable connections, numbered plate and box corners. These checks help you compare the delivered item with the listing, but they do not replace an in-person inspection or seller verification.
These checks establish whether a listing matches the documented product outline; they cannot prove provenance by themselves. A missing accessory, swapped controller or damaged box should be treated as a material difference from a complete set.

Separate historical price from current value
The 2014 recommended prices are useful for understanding the edition’s original positioning, not for setting a 2026 offer. A seller may quote a premium, but the historical launch figures do not establish that premium as fair. Current value depends on the exact numbered unit, condition, completeness, region and evidence of authenticity.
Ask for item-specific evidence
Request photos of the model label, numbered plate, console serial-area markings, all included accessories and the presentation packaging. Ask the seller to state explicitly whether the camera, stand, mono headset, controller and sleeve are original to the set. Do not assume that a gray accessory purchased separately belongs to the same numbered package.

Record what is and is not included
Use a written checklist in the transaction message. Note whether the console is complete, whether the packaging is present, whether any accessory is a replacement and whether the seller has tested power, video output and controller operation. If the listing does not establish a detail, treat it as unknown rather than silently assuming the best condition.
Best Value
- 30th Anniversary Design: A throwback color scheme and retro-inspired details honor the original PlayStation console.
- Immersive Feedback: Feel the action with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for deeper in-game immersion.
- Multi-Device Compatibility: Connect to PS5, PS4, PC, Mac, and mobile devices via USB Type-C or Bluetooth.

Check regional sales context without overreading it
The PlayStation Blog stated that the edition would not be available through traditional retail channels in the SCEE region. That is a historical sales detail from the original launch. It does not describe today’s resale channels, and it should not be used as proof that a present-day listing is official or genuine.
What the anniversary numbers actually tell you
The two console editions share a 12,300-unit figure, but the meaning is slightly different in context. Sony tied the 20th Anniversary PS4’s number to the original PlayStation launch date and numbered each console from 1 to 12,300. Sony’s 30th Anniversary Collection page likewise states that 12,300 numbered consoles would be available globally. The matching quantity supports the thematic connection; it does not indicate that the systems share components, operating features or market value.
Numbering also does not, by itself, establish condition or completeness. A low number may appeal to a particular collector, while a higher number can still be the better purchase if its packaging and accessories are intact. Treat the plate as an identification and provenance detail, not as an automatic quality grade.
A practical decision framework
- Decide whether you need a PS4 specifically. If the answer is yes, only the 20th Anniversary PS4 satisfies that requirement; the newer products are alternatives in theme, not equivalent PS4 models.
- Choose between a console and an accessory. Select the PS5 Pro bundle for a current-generation system, or the DualSense for a compact collectible without another console.
- Rank completeness above cosmetic assumptions. For the 20th Anniversary PS4, confirm the documented gray accessories and presentation packaging before considering a unit complete.
- Set a budget from verified listings, not historical launch prices. The published 2014 figures are reference points only, and no current resale price is established here.
- Verify availability at the time of purchase. Sony’s collection pages do not guarantee present stock, and a product announcement is not a guarantee that a seller has genuine inventory.
Bottom line for collectors
The 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle is the best official alternative when you want numbered Sony hardware with the original-PlayStation visual language and a current gaming platform. The 30th Anniversary DualSense is the best alternative when the design matters more than owning another console. Neither reproduces the 20th Anniversary PS4’s exact combination of a 500GB CUH-1100A A20 Series system, Original Gray matching accessories, numbered plate and 2014 commemorative packaging. For that specific object, careful authentication and completeness checks matter more than substituting a newer anniversary product.
