Best Alternatives to Sony Portable Bluetooth Speakers for Louder Sound or Deeper Bass

For most people, the JBL Xtreme 4 is the best alternative to a Sony portable Bluetooth speaker when the priority is louder playback with deeper, cleaner bass. JBL combines two woofers, two drivers and dual pumping bass radiators with tuning intended to reduce distortion at high volume. It also adds IP67 water-and-dust protection, a built-in powerbank and a replaceable battery.

Choose the JBL Xtreme 5 if maximum output is more important than carrying weight. Choose the Bose SoundLink Max for a premium all-rounder with a stated 20-hour battery life. Consider the Marshall Middleton II if you value a wide-sounding, premium portable design and can accept less certain loudness and bass comparisons.

Quick answer: which Sony alternative should you buy?

There is no single speaker that wins every category. Loudness depends on listening distance, room or outdoor placement, music, equalizer settings and how much distortion you tolerate. Bass can sound deeper because a speaker produces more low frequencies, because it has greater acoustic output, or simply because its tuning emphasizes bass. The models below are therefore best matched to different priorities rather than ranked as universally superior.

Best overall upgrade for louder, deeper sound JBL Xtreme 4 Two woofers, two drivers, dual pumping bass radiators, high-volume distortion control, IP67 protection, powerbank and replaceable battery.
Maximum output and bass JBL Xtreme 5 TechRadar reports 130W output and describes powerful bass; the trade-off is a 6.4 lb (2.9 kg) body.
Premium all-round use Bose SoundLink Max What Hi-Fi reports 20-hour battery life and a claimed 30 ft/9 m range; TechRadar names it a top all-rounder.
Premium wide-sounding alternative Marshall Middleton II Current buying-guide coverage places it in this competitive group, but the cited material does not establish a standardized loudness or bass measurement.

What “louder” and “deeper bass” mean in practice

Loudness is more than a watt number

A speaker’s maximum volume is affected by amplifier power, driver efficiency, enclosure design, battery state and distortion limits. A model may advertise a high power figure without sounding louder in every room. Placement also matters: a speaker near a wall or corner can sound fuller, while an open outdoor position usually needs more acoustic output to achieve the same perceived volume.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use manufacturer power figures as specifications, not as laboratory loudness rankings. JBL’s retailer specification for the Xtreme 4 lists separate output in AC and battery operation: 2 x 30W RMS for the woofers plus 2 x 20W RMS for the tweeters when connected to AC, and 2 x 20W RMS for the woofers plus 2 x 15W RMS for the tweeters on battery. The change means the speaker can deliver a different maximum level depending on its power source.

Deep bass has physical and tuning limits

Portable speakers cannot move as much air as large home speakers, so “deeper bass” generally means stronger perceived low-end at normal listening levels rather than subwoofer-like output. Passive or pumping radiators, woofer size, enclosure volume and digital signal processing all contribute. Bass-heavy tracks can also trigger limiting to protect the drivers, reducing the difference between models at maximum volume.

Listen for bass that remains controlled when you raise the volume. A speaker that sounds impressive at moderate levels but becomes boomy or compressed at the top of its range may be less useful outdoors than one with slightly less emphasis and better control.

JBL Xtreme 4: the clearest evidence-backed choice

Why it is the default recommendation

JBL’s official product description specifically claims deeper bass from two woofers, two powerful drivers and dual pumping bass radiators. It also says the tuning is designed to reduce distortion at high volume, with the aim of maximizing bass output and loudness. Those are manufacturer claims rather than independent laboratory results, but they directly address the reason many owners look beyond Sony’s portable range.

The Xtreme 4 is also practical for outdoor use. Its IP67 rating indicates protection against dust and temporary water immersion under the test conditions for that rating. A built-in powerbank lets you charge another device, and the battery is replaceable rather than permanently sealed for the life of the product. These features are useful if the speaker will be used on trips, at a pool or in a garden where charging access is limited.

Power figures and listening implications

The current JBL retailer specification lists the following RMS output:

  • AC operation: two 30W RMS woofers and two 20W RMS tweeters.
  • Battery operation: two 20W RMS woofers and two 15W RMS tweeters.

Do not treat those figures as a direct comparison with another brand’s wattage. RMS conventions, amplifier limits and measurement conditions vary. The useful takeaway is that the Xtreme 4 has a higher stated output when plugged in and a lower battery-mode ceiling, so the loudest performance is available near a mains outlet.

Who should buy it

  • Choose it for beach, park and patio listening where water and dust resistance matter.
  • Choose it when you want stronger bass without giving up a carryable form factor.
  • Choose it when a replaceable battery and emergency phone charging are valuable.

It is less compelling if your only goal is the absolute highest output and you do not mind a heavier speaker; the Xtreme 5 is aimed more directly at that use.

JBL Xtreme 5: maximum output at the cost of weight

What the published figures show

TechRadar’s 2026 review reports 130W power output for the Xtreme 5 and a weight of 6.4 lb (2.9 kg). The review describes powerful bass and strong battery performance. What Hi-Fi characterizes the Xtreme 5 as chunkier and more durable than the Xtreme 4.

The 130W figure is attributed to TechRadar’s review, not to a standardized cross-brand test. It should therefore be read as a model specification reported by that publication, not proof that the Xtreme 5 will be exactly a certain number of decibels louder than a Sony speaker. In practical terms, the Xtreme 5 is the choice when you are willing to carry a nearly 3 kg speaker to obtain a larger output reserve.

When its extra size makes sense

Extra mass can support larger drivers, a bigger enclosure and more battery capacity, but it affects every trip. A 6.4 lb speaker is manageable with a handle or shoulder strap, yet it is noticeably less convenient for cycling, public transport or carrying together with camping equipment. For a fixed backyard setup, the weight is easier to justify than for day-long travel.

Pick the Xtreme 5 if parties, open spaces and bass-heavy music regularly push your current speaker to its limits. If you usually listen indoors at moderate levels, the Xtreme 4’s lighter approach may provide better value and portability.

Bose SoundLink Max: the premium all-rounder

Battery and wireless details

What Hi-Fi reports a 20-hour battery life for the SoundLink Max and a claimed Bluetooth range of 30 ft (9 m). It also lists Bluetooth 5.3. Battery figures are quoted endurance claims, so actual runtime will vary with volume, content, temperature and wireless conditions.

TechRadar names the SoundLink Max its top all-rounder in its current buying guide. That positioning matters if you want a speaker that balances sound, build and everyday usability rather than chasing the largest published power figure.

Who benefits from the Bose approach

  • Choose it for a premium portable speaker that will serve indoor rooms and occasional outdoor use.
  • Choose it if a clearly stated 20-hour endurance target is more useful to you than a higher wattage claim.
  • Choose it if you prefer a balanced presentation and do not want the most aggressive bass emphasis.

The SoundLink Max is not the obvious pick for readers whose only metric is maximum party volume. The Xtreme 5 has the stronger published output figure. Nor does the cited material establish an IP rating, replaceable-battery support or powerbank feature for the Bose model, so confirm those details for the exact regional version before buying.

Marshall Middleton II: a qualified premium alternative

The Marshall Middleton II appears in current comparison and buying-guide coverage alongside the JBL and Bose models. It is presented as a premium, wide-sounding portable design. However, the cited coverage does not provide a standardized manufacturer loudness figure or a reliable, directly comparable bass measurement.

That makes the Middleton II a preference-led purchase. It can make sense if you value its design, stereo presentation or broad soundstage and are prepared to judge it by listening rather than by a confirmed output specification. It should not be selected solely on the assumption that it is louder or deeper than a Sony speaker, because the available evidence does not establish that conclusion.

Choose by the way you will use the speaker

For outdoor gatherings

Start with the JBL Xtreme 4 if you need water and dust protection, a powerbank and a replaceable battery. Its claimed high-volume tuning and bass-radiator design are directly aligned with outdoor use. Move to the Xtreme 5 when the area is larger, your music is bass-heavy and carrying 2.9 kg is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For travel and frequent carrying

Weight and handling matter more than a headline wattage figure. The Xtreme 4 is the more sensible JBL option if the Xtreme 5’s 6.4 lb mass would discourage you from taking it along. A speaker left at home cannot outperform a lighter one that you actually carry.

For long listening sessions

The SoundLink Max has the clearest cited endurance number at 20 hours. Treat that as a claimed figure under specified test conditions rather than a guarantee at maximum volume. The Xtreme 4’s replaceable battery can be a longer-term advantage even though the cited material does not provide a runtime number.

For a premium indoor-and-outdoor balance

The Bose SoundLink Max is the safest fit when you want an all-rounder rather than the most forceful bass. The Marshall Middleton II is worth auditioning if its wide presentation and design appeal to you, but make the decision by listening because comparable output data is not established.

How to get louder, cleaner bass from any portable speaker

Use the right placement

  1. Place the speaker on a stable surface rather than loose fabric that can absorb or rattle with bass.
  2. For more perceived low-end indoors, try a position near a wall, then move it away if the bass becomes boomy.
  3. Outdoors, keep the drivers unobstructed and point them toward the listening area.
  4. Raise the speaker to roughly ear level for clearer vocals and less sound blocked by furniture or people.

Manage volume and equalization

  • Increase volume gradually and stop before obvious rattling, harshness or pumping begins.
  • Use the speaker’s app EQ, if available, to make small bass changes rather than applying a maximum boost.
  • If bass disappears at high volume, reduce the bass boost or lower the overall level; protection processing may be limiting the low frequencies.
  • Compare speakers with the same track, similar placement and the same listening distance.

Protect battery performance

Use AC operation when you need the Xtreme 4’s higher stated output mode. Keep portable speakers out of prolonged extreme heat and allow a wet speaker to dry according to its care instructions before charging. Water resistance is not a license to submerge a speaker beyond its rating or to charge it while wet.

Buying checklist before you order

  • Define the main goal: maximum output, deeper perceived bass, lighter carrying weight or longer endurance.
  • Check the exact regional model: names, included accessories and feature availability can vary by market.
  • Separate claims from tests: JBL’s “deeper bass” language and the Xtreme 5’s 130W report describe product performance, but they are not a single standardized decibel comparison.
  • Confirm charging needs: the Xtreme 4 includes a powerbank; the cited material does not establish the same feature for Bose or Marshall.
  • Consider service life: a replaceable battery can matter more than a small launch-day sound difference if you plan to keep the speaker for years.
  • Match size to transport: the Xtreme 5 weighs 6.4 lb / 2.9 kg, a meaningful load for frequent travel.
  • Check water and dust requirements: the Xtreme 4’s IP67 rating is specifically documented; do not assume an equivalent rating for another model without checking its specification.
  • Listen before committing when possible: room acoustics, music choice and personal taste can change whether a speaker sounds deeper or louder to you.

Final recommendation

Buy the JBL Xtreme 4 when you want the strongest documented combination of louder playback, deeper-bass design, outdoor protection, device charging and a replaceable battery. Choose the JBL Xtreme 5 for the greatest stated output and powerful bass if its 6.4 lb / 2.9 kg weight is acceptable. Choose the Bose SoundLink Max for a premium all-rounder with a reported 20-hour battery life. Choose the Marshall Middleton II only when its wide-sounding presentation and design fit your taste, because a standardized loudness or bass advantage over Sony is not established.
