The best alternative to Slide depends on why you are changing. Most Florida homeowners should first obtain like-for-like quotes from several admitted private insurers, then check whether Citizens Property Insurance Corporation is available. A licensed agent is especially valuable for older roofs, coastal locations, prior claims or unusual construction. Surplus-lines insurance can cover properties the admitted market will not write, while self-insurance is practical only for a mortgage-free owner with enough liquid cash to rebuild and pay temporary living costs after a catastrophe.
Do not choose on premium alone. Compare the same dwelling limit, replacement-cost basis, deductibles, roof settlement, exclusions, claims service and lender acceptance. Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) sample rates are directional, not personal quotes, and a company-reported average such as Kin’s $1,977 annual figure is not a quote for your home.

At a glance: your main alternatives to Slide
| Option | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Admitted private insurers | Homeowners who can pass normal underwriting and want a standard policy | Availability and price vary by county, roof age, construction, claims history, mitigation and deductibles. |
| Citizens Property Insurance Corporation | Owners who cannot find acceptable private coverage | Eligibility and policy terms must be checked at application and renewal; actual premiums vary by territory and policy form. |
| Surplus-lines insurer | Unusual or high-risk homes declined by standard carriers | Compare exclusions, deductibles, roof settlement, financial strength and mortgage-lender acceptance carefully. |
| Florida Market Assistance Plan (FMAP) | Shoppers who want a local agent to search authorized insurers | FMAP is a free public referral service, not a guarantee that coverage or a lower price is available. |
| Self-insurance | Mortgage-free owners with substantial cash reserves | You assume rebuilding, temporary housing, liability and catastrophe risk yourself; most lenders will not accept it. |
Which private insurers can replace Slide?
Florida’s March 31, 2026 official residential-market report lists 7,591,252 personal-residential policies statewide. Rounded policy counts in that report show State Farm at 9% of policies in force, Universal at 7%, Slide at 7%, Tower Hill at 5%, American Integrity at 5%, First Protective at 4%, Florida Peninsula at 3%, Kin at 2% and Citizens at 4%. These shares describe the statewide market on that date; they do not indicate that a carrier will accept your address or offer the lowest premium.

How to interpret a private-market quote
- County and territory: Wind exposure, distance to the coast and local catastrophe models can make two nearby homes price very differently.
- Roof age and design: Underwriting may require a roof inspection, limit roof settlement or decline an older roof.
- Construction and mitigation: Frame, masonry, roof shape, shutters, opening protection and roof-to-wall connections affect eligibility and price.
- Claims and occupancy: Prior losses, vacancy, seasonal use, short-term rental activity and maintenance condition can change the offer.
- Deductibles: A quote with a high hurricane deductible can look inexpensive while leaving you with a large out-of-pocket loss.
Ask every insurer or agent for a declarations-page comparison. If one quote is cheaper, identify whether the difference comes from a lower dwelling limit, actual-cash-value roof settlement, narrower water coverage, higher deductibles or missing ordinance-law coverage.
Citizens: can you switch from Slide?
Citizens is Florida’s state-backed property insurer for owners who cannot find acceptable coverage in the private market. You may be eligible when authorized private insurers will not offer coverage that meets Citizens’ requirements, but eligibility rules and the private-market offer process can change. Check the rules at renewal and work with an agent who can document the private quotes or declinations relevant to your property.
Citizens reported on April 30, 2026 that OIR-approved changes effective July 1, 2026 produce an average 8.8% decrease for homeowners multiperil policies and an average 5.1% decrease for wind-only policies statewide. Those are statewide averages, not a promise that your premium will fall. Your policy form, territory, insured value, mitigation credits and deductible determine the actual result.
When Citizens may make sense
- Your roof, age, claims history or location is rejected by multiple admitted carriers.
- Private quotes are materially narrower or more expensive after an apples-to-apples comparison.
- You need a temporary placement while an agent searches for a private-market option.
Questions to ask before accepting a Citizens policy
- What policy form, dwelling limit and replacement-cost basis are being offered?
- What are the hurricane, wind and all-other-peril deductibles in dollars?
- Will a private-market offer later make you ineligible or trigger a policy change at renewal?
- Are flood, ordinance-law, matching and water-damage provisions adequate for your property?
Use FMAP when you need an agent to search broadly
The Florida Department of Financial Services’ Office of the Insurance Consumer Advocate describes the Florida Market Assistance Plan (FMAP) Online Referral Service as a free service that matches property-insurance shoppers with local agents who can seek coverage from Florida-authorized insurers. FMAP is useful when you do not know which carriers write in your county or when direct online applications produce repeated declines.

Surplus-lines insurance for hard-to-place homes
Florida’s Office of the Insurance Consumer Advocate defines surplus-lines insurance as an alternative for consumers who cannot obtain coverage in the standard or admitted market. It can be appropriate for an older coastal home, unusual construction, a property with severe claims history or another risk that admitted insurers decline.
How surplus lines differ
- Policy wording: Exclusions, sublimits, cosmetic-roof provisions and water-damage restrictions may be broader than on an admitted policy.
- Deductibles: Wind or named-storm deductibles can be percentage-based and substantial.
- Financial and regulatory framework: Confirm the insurer’s authorization for surplus-lines business, financial-strength information and the protections that apply to the specific placement.
- Mortgage acceptance: Obtain written confirmation from your lender before binding coverage; a lender may reject a form that does not meet its requirements.
Have a licensed agent place and explain the policy. Compare the surplus-lines form against your Slide declarations page line by line, including roof-loss settlement, matching, ordinance or law, debris removal, loss of use, liability and any named-storm exclusions.
Self-insurance: only for a narrow group
Self-insurance means declining a conventional property policy and retaining the risk yourself. It is realistic only for an owner without a mortgage who can immediately fund a total rebuild, debris removal, temporary housing, lost-use costs, emergency repairs, personal-property replacement and liability claims. A reserve that covers only the home’s market value is not enough; rebuilding costs, code upgrades and temporary accommodation can be much higher.

Most mortgage contracts require property insurance and name the lender as mortgagee, so self-insurance is generally incompatible with a loan. Even a mortgage-free owner should price separate flood coverage, liability protection and a catastrophe reserve before deciding. Treat this as a risk-financing decision, not a way to obtain a zero-cost insurance policy.
Build an apples-to-apples comparison
Use one worksheet for every Slide alternative. Enter limits and conditions exactly as shown in each quote or specimen policy.
| Coverage or condition | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dwelling | Same replacement-cost limit, valuation method and inflation guard | An underinsured home can leave you paying the difference after a total loss. |
| Other structures | Percentage or dollar limit for detached garages, docks, fences and sheds | Coastal and rural properties may have expensive detached improvements. |
| Personal property | Coverage limit, replacement cost versus actual cash value and special sublimits | Jewelry, electronics, firearms, tools and collectibles may need scheduling. |
| Loss of use | Temporary-housing limit, time limit and additional living-expense definition | A long rebuild can exhaust a low limit. |
| Liability | Personal-liability and medical-payments limits; exclusions for pools, animals or rentals | Liability is separate from damage to the building. |
| Wind and hurricane | Named-storm or hurricane deductible, percentage basis and application by location | A 2% deductible on a $500,000 dwelling is $10,000 before insurance pays. |
| All other perils | Flat or percentage deductible and covered causes of loss | Different deductibles can reverse the apparent premium advantage. |
| Roof | Replacement cost, actual cash value, age-based payment, cosmetic damage and matching | Roof wording is often the largest practical difference between quotes. |
| Water | Sudden discharge, seepage, backup, mold and sublimits | Water exclusions and low sublimits can create major gaps. |
| Ordinance and law | Code-upgrade limit and whether it applies to the full or damaged portion | Florida rebuilding may require current wind and electrical standards. |
| Flood | Whether excluded and whether a separate policy is needed | Flood is not automatically included in a standard homeowners policy. |
| Claims and service | Reporting channels, catastrophe response, appraisal language and complaint history | A low premium is not useful if the claim process or documentation is unclear. |
| Insurer status | Admitted or surplus-lines placement, license and financial-strength information | Status affects regulation, lender acceptance and the protections available. |
OIR says premium varies with construction type, dwelling value, mitigation features and deductibles. Use its CHOICES homeowners tool for directional county comparisons, then follow OIR’s recommendation to contact an agent or insurer for an official quote.

Do not assume a Slide replacement policy or an alternative homeowners policy covers flood. OIR states that an HO-6 policy generally does not cover flooding and that additional coverage is needed if you want flood protection. The same practical check applies to other residential forms: ask in writing whether rising water, storm surge, overflow and groundwater are excluded, and obtain a separate flood quote when the exposure matters.

Wind-mitigation inspection
Florida requires insurers to offer discounts for features that reduce hurricane-wind damage. A qualified inspector records those features on the state wind-mitigation form. The form can document roof geometry, secondary water resistance, roof-to-wall connections, opening protection and other qualifying construction details. Submit a current, complete form with each quote request and ask the agent to show the credit on the quote.
A discount is not guaranteed to outweigh the inspection cost, and an older form may not reflect renovations. Have the inspector correct missing or inconsistent documentation before binding a policy.

Four-point inspection
The Department of Financial Services explains that insurers commonly request a four-point inspection covering roofing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC for new or renewal policies. Obtain it before shopping when roof age or system condition could affect eligibility. The report should identify materials, approximate ages, visible defects and updates, with photographs where required by the carrier.

Do not conceal defects or rely on a contractor’s informal statement. A carrier can change terms, require repairs or decline the risk when inspection findings conflict with the application.
Step-by-step process for leaving Slide safely
- Read the current declarations page. Record expiration date, dwelling limit, deductibles, roof settlement, endorsements, mortgagee clause and agent contact.
- Assemble property evidence. Gather roof permits and age, four-point and wind-mitigation inspections, replacement-cost estimate, photos, prior-loss details and construction information.
- Set coverage targets. Choose the same dwelling, contents, loss-of-use and liability limits for every quote before comparing premiums.
- Request several admitted quotes. Use direct carriers, a licensed independent agent or FMAP. Ask for written explanations of exclusions, roof terms and deductibles.
- Check Citizens eligibility. If private offers are unavailable or unacceptable, ask an agent to document eligibility and quote the relevant Citizens form.
- Escalate to surplus lines if necessary. Have a licensed agent explain the form, insurer status, exclusions, deductibles and lender acceptance.
- Confirm the lender requirement. Send the proposed declarations page or binder to your mortgage servicer and obtain confirmation before cancelling Slide.
- Bind the replacement policy first. Confirm effective date, payment, mortgagee details and proof of insurance. Avoid any gap, even for one day.
- Cancel Slide in writing. Follow the policy’s notice method, request written confirmation and ask how any unearned premium will be handled.
- Store the complete file. Keep the policy, inspections, receipts, photos, inventory and correspondence in cloud storage and an offline location.
If no insurer will cover your home
Repeated declines usually indicate an underwriting issue that can be diagnosed. Ask for the reason in writing and work through the appropriate branch:
- Roof age or condition: Obtain a licensed roof inspection, repair or replace documented defects, then resubmit with permits and photographs.
- Missing mitigation evidence: Schedule a qualified wind-mitigation inspection and correct errors on the state form.
- Old electrical, plumbing or HVAC: Use a four-point inspection to identify required updates and retain invoices and permits.
- Claims history: Verify that prior losses are reported accurately and provide completed repairs, receipts and proof of no continuing damage.
- Coastal or unusual risk: Ask an independent agent to search admitted carriers, Citizens and then an appropriate surplus-lines market.
- Mortgage conflict: Give the lender every proposed form before binding and ask what minimum limits, deductibles and insurer status it accepts.
Do not misstate occupancy, roof age, renovations or prior losses to obtain a quote. An inaccurate application can create a coverage dispute when you need the policy most.
What does Florida home insurance cost compared with Slide?
There is no reliable statewide answer to “which carrier is cheaper than Slide” because Florida premiums depend on address, replacement cost, roof, mitigation, claims, deductibles and policy form. OIR’s CHOICES figures are illustrative county comparisons, not personalized offers.
Kin reports that its customers pay $1,977 per year on average. Kin identifies this as an average for its customers; it is not a quote, does not establish that Kin is cheaper than Slide for your property and should not be generalized to every Florida county or home type.
Citizens’ July 1, 2026 changes are likewise averages: 8.8% lower statewide for homeowners multiperil policies and 5.1% lower statewide for wind-only policies, according to its April 30, 2026 announcement. Your renewal can move differently. Compare the total annual premium, installment fees, inspection costs, deductibles and coverage limits together.
Decision guide by property type
| Your situation | First move | Likely path |
|---|---|---|
| Modern roof, standard construction, no recent claims | Request several admitted quotes using identical limits | Private market is the most straightforward starting point. |
| Older roof or aging systems | Complete roof and four-point inspections before quoting | Repairs may unlock admitted coverage; otherwise consider Citizens or surplus lines. |
| Coastal, high-wind or unusual construction | Use an independent agent and current mitigation form | Compare private, Citizens and surplus-lines terms, not just premiums. |
| Mortgage-free with very large liquid reserves | Model total-loss, liability, flood and temporary-housing exposure | Self-insurance is possible but leaves all catastrophe risk with you. |
| Mortgage-required coverage and repeated declines | Contact FMAP or a licensed independent agent immediately | Document admitted-market searches, then evaluate Citizens or lender-approved surplus lines. |
Bottom line for Florida homeowners leaving Slide
Start with multiple admitted private quotes, using the same limits and deductibles as your Slide policy. Check Citizens when private coverage is unavailable or unacceptable, use FMAP for free agent matching, and reserve surplus lines for risks the standard market will not write. Self-insurance is a specialized choice for mortgage-free owners with substantial reserves. Before switching, verify the insurer’s Florida authorization, current policy form, financial-strength information, inspection requirements, lender acceptance, cancellation terms and every major exclusion. Bind replacement coverage before cancelling Slide and keep flood insurance as a separate item in the comparison.
