For ordinary mobile calls, Phone Link remains the simplest choice when your Windows PC and phone can pair over Bluetooth. If you need a different setup, choose based on the kind of call you want: Google Voice provides a separate internet phone number, WhatsApp handles app-to-app voice and video calls, a paid business VoIP service adds managed numbers and SMS, and KDE Connect or AirDroid focus on linking devices rather than replacing cellular calling.
The key distinction is whether you want to use your carrier number or make an internet call. Phone Link routes the phone’s cellular call through a Bluetooth connection; the other options generally use their own accounts, phone numbers or messaging networks.

What you can use instead depends on the type of call
There is no single replacement that behaves exactly like Phone Link. A Windows calling setup can mean one of three different things:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- A cellular call using your existing SIM and carrier number. The phone supplies the mobile service while the PC supplies the screen, speakers and microphone. Bluetooth is normally the bridge.
- An internet call to another user of the same app. WhatsApp is the clearest example. Both people use the service, and the call travels over the internet rather than your phone carrier’s voice network.
- A separate VoIP/PSTN phone service. Google Voice and paid business phone platforms can provide their own number, forwarding, voicemail, SMS or number-porting features.
Decide which of these outcomes you need before installing anything. A USB Bluetooth adapter can fix a PC that lacks Bluetooth, but it cannot give the computer cellular service. Conversely, installing WhatsApp will not let you dial an arbitrary carrier number through your phone’s SIM.

Phone Link: the baseline when you need your existing mobile number
Phone Link is still the most direct route to a normal carrier call on a Windows PC. Microsoft’s calling workflow lets you open the Calls tab, dial a contact or number, view recent calls and handle the conversation through the computer. The phone remains the device connected to the mobile network; Windows is acting as the user interface and audio endpoint.
Microsoft requires Bluetooth on both the phone and PC, and the PC must support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The calling documentation reports a display limit of up to 100 recent calls. Phone Link is not a replacement for your primary telephone service, and Microsoft does not present it as an emergency-service substitute.
When Phone Link is the right answer
- You want to call ordinary mobile or landline numbers without asking contacts to install an app.
- You want calls to use your existing carrier number and calling plan.
- Your PC has reliable Bluetooth/BLE and you can keep the phone nearby.
- You prefer a Windows-integrated call history instead of a separate VoIP account.
What can interrupt a Phone Link call
Bluetooth range, radio interference, a low phone battery, power-management settings and a disconnected phone can interrupt the audio path. A headset with a microphone often produces more consistent sound than a laptop’s built-in microphone and speakers. Call quality still depends on the phone’s cellular coverage because the carrier call is not converted into an internet call by Phone Link.

Google Voice is the strongest alternative when you want to call from a Windows browser without mirroring your SIM. It provides a Google Voice number, browser calling, call forwarding and voicemail. That makes it useful for a second line, a personal number kept separate from a mobile device, or a number that can ring multiple destinations.
The Associated Press reported in 2025 that calls to U.S., Canadian and Puerto Rican numbers are free, while international rates vary. The free version is limited to residents of the contiguous 48 United States. Those geographic and pricing conditions matter: availability is not global, and an international call can incur a per-minute charge even when domestic calling is free.
Choose Google Voice when
- You need to dial regular phone numbers from a browser.
- You want forwarding or voicemail independent of your physical phone.
- You are eligible in the supported U.S. region and accept a separate number identity.
- You can keep account recovery, microphone permissions and browser access under control.
What Google Voice does not do
Google Voice is not a Bluetooth relay for your SIM. The person you call sees the Google Voice number or its configured caller ID, not necessarily your mobile number. Your phone’s carrier plan, SIM and cellular signal are separate from the Voice account. International destinations, number availability, forwarding behavior and any porting eligibility should be checked in the account for your region before you move an important number.
WhatsApp Desktop: the best fit for WhatsApp contacts
WhatsApp Desktop is convenient when the people you call already use WhatsApp. Pair the Windows app with your phone by scanning a QR code, open a conversation and choose the voice-call or video-call control. The desktop app needs microphone permission for voice calls and camera permission for video.
WhatsApp setup
- Install the official WhatsApp desktop application for Windows.
- Open WhatsApp on the phone that owns the account and use the linked-devices screen to scan the desktop QR code.
- In Windows, allow microphone access when prompted. Allow camera access only if you plan to make video calls.
- Open a chat with a contact who uses WhatsApp and select the voice or video call button.
- Test the input device and output device in Windows sound settings before an important call.
WhatsApp calls use the internet and the WhatsApp account identity. They do not let you type an arbitrary carrier number and make the call through your phone’s cellular account. If a contact does not use WhatsApp, you need another method, such as Phone Link, Google Voice or a conventional phone service.

WhatsApp’s practical trade-offs
- Advantage: voice and video calling, group conversations and chat history are in one application.
- Requirement: both participants generally need WhatsApp for an app-to-app call.
- Dependency: poor Wi-Fi, a congested network or restrictive firewall rules can degrade the call.
- Privacy consideration: the account, linked-device list and desktop session should be protected with the phone’s security controls.
Paid business VoIP: when a company needs managed telephony
A paid business phone service is a different category from a personal Phone Link substitute. It can provide hosted numbers, desktop calling, administrative controls, SMS and number porting. The Associated Press describes this class of service as paid and business-oriented, so it is most appropriate when a team needs more than one person making calls from a laptop.
Questions to answer before subscribing
- Is the monthly price per user, per number or a combination of both?
- Can you port an existing number, and who controls it if the subscription ends?
- Are SMS, voicemail, call recording, auto-attendants and shared lines included?
- What are the domestic and international calling rates?
- Which Windows client, browser and mobile applications are supported?
- What administration, retention, audit and compliance controls are available?
- Can the provider export contacts, recordings and message history if you leave?
This route avoids the requirement that every caller use the same consumer app, but it introduces recurring cost and operational responsibility. It is not a way to borrow your personal phone’s cellular service; it is a separate telephone system delivered over the internet.
KDE Connect: device integration rather than a cellular-call replacement
KDE Connect is an open-source, local-network companion for linking a phone and computer. Its strengths are notification forwarding, SMS visibility, clipboard sharing, media control and file transfer. Those features can make a Windows workstation feel connected to an Android phone without creating another phone account.
The available comparison does not document KDE Connect as a complete Windows cellular-call replacement. Treat it as an integration tool: use it when the priority is seeing notifications, copying a one-time code, replying to a message or moving a file. Keep Phone Link or a separate calling service for actual carrier calls.
Good reasons to choose KDE Connect
- You prefer open-source software and local-network communication.
- You need clipboard, notification, file and media controls more than a dialer.
- You want to avoid creating another hosted phone-number account.
AirDroid Personal: Android management with mirroring and SMS
AirDroid Personal is aimed primarily at Android management. The cited comparison reports Windows and macOS clients plus a browser console, with screen mirroring, SMS, notifications and file access. It can be useful when your real goal is operating the phone from the PC rather than placing a carrier call through Windows.
The free plan has transfer and device limits, and paid upgrades are available. Because those limits and supported features can change, check the current plan details in your region before moving a large file library or relying on the service for multiple devices.
AirDroid is a good fit when
- Your phone is Android and you need screen mirroring or remote device management.
- SMS, notifications and files matter as much as calling.
- You can accept account-based access and any free-tier restrictions.
AirDroid should not be presented as a guaranteed replacement for Phone Link’s Bluetooth cellular-call path. Its value is broader Android control; the phone and its carrier account remain the source of the mobile service.
How to make a Windows PC ready for calls
1. Check the PC’s Bluetooth and BLE support
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows and confirm that Bluetooth can be switched on.
- If Bluetooth is absent, inspect Device Manager for a Bluetooth radio and install the manufacturer’s Windows driver if one is available.
- For a desktop without Bluetooth/BLE, install a USB Bluetooth adapter designed for Windows PC use, then install its current driver.
- Confirm that the adapter supports the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP), which is the profile commonly used for call audio.
A USB adapter solves the missing-radio problem only. It does not add a mobile subscription, SIM or emergency-calling capability to Windows.

- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
2. Prepare audio and permissions
- Connect a headset with a microphone or select the laptop’s built-in microphone and speakers.
- In Settings > System > Sound, choose the intended input and output devices.
- In Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, allow the calling application to use the microphone.
- For video calls, allow camera access in the same privacy area.
- Make a short test call and listen for echo, clipping and delayed audio before using the setup for work.
3. Pick the connection that matches your contacts
Use Phone Link for ordinary numbers through your phone, WhatsApp when contacts already use WhatsApp, Google Voice for a separate browser number where eligible, a paid business service for managed telephony, KDE Connect for local device integration, and AirDroid for Android management.
Choosing by requirement
You need to call any phone number
Use Phone Link if Bluetooth/BLE works and you want your carrier number. Choose Google Voice if a separate number is acceptable and the service is available in your region. A paid business service is appropriate when the number must belong to an organization or be shared by a team.
You want to call without Bluetooth
Use an internet-based option: WhatsApp for WhatsApp contacts, Google Voice for supported regular numbers, or a paid business VoIP service. Removing Bluetooth also means you are no longer routing the phone’s cellular call directly to the PC. You become dependent on the internet connection and the chosen account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou need SMS and notifications more than voice calling
KDE Connect emphasizes local notifications, SMS visibility, clipboard, media and files. AirDroid adds Android mirroring and broader management, but its free tier has transfer and device limits.
You need to retain a business number
Evaluate a paid business phone service for number porting, SMS, user administration and ownership terms. Do not assume that a consumer app or Phone Link can provide business-grade number control or compliance records.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phone Link cannot place or answer calls | Bluetooth pairing, BLE support or permissions | Toggle Bluetooth on both devices, remove and re-pair the devices, confirm the PC’s BLE capability, and allow call and microphone permissions |
| Call connects but there is no sound | Wrong Windows audio endpoint or missing HFP support | Select the headset or hands-free device in Windows Sound settings and verify the adapter/headset supports HFP |
| Audio cuts out when walking away | Bluetooth range or interference | Keep the phone near the PC, remove competing radios where practical and test without a USB hub or obstructed adapter |
| WhatsApp call buttons are missing | Unlinked desktop, unsupported contact or denied permissions | Relink with the QR code, open a WhatsApp chat with the intended contact, and allow microphone or camera access |
| Google Voice calling is unavailable | Region, account or browser limitation | Confirm that the account is eligible, the browser has microphone access and the destination rate is understood before dialing |
| KDE Connect sees the phone but cannot exchange data | Devices are not on the same local network or a firewall blocks discovery | Place both devices on the same trusted network and allow the application through the Windows firewall |
| AirDroid transfers stop unexpectedly | Free-plan limit, device limit or network interruption | Check the current plan allowance, connected-device count and network status |
Emergency calling, privacy and reliability
Do not treat a PC calling app as your emergency-service substitute. Phone Link depends on the phone, Bluetooth and the carrier connection; internet services depend on account access, network availability and regional support. Keep a working phone available for emergency calls and know which device will provide location and callback information in your area.
Review permissions before granting access. A desktop caller may need microphone access, and video calls need camera access. A linked-device service can expose notifications, message previews, files or clipboard contents on the PC. Use Windows sign-in protection, phone screen locking, two-factor authentication where offered and regular reviews of linked devices.
Feature support can change with the Windows build, phone model, Android or iPhone version, app release and country. Confirm the current behavior after major updates rather than assuming that a feature documented for one device applies to every phone.
Bottom line: match the tool to the call
Choose Phone Link for the closest thing to making your normal mobile calls from Windows, provided Bluetooth and BLE are available. Choose WhatsApp for internet calls to WhatsApp users, Google Voice for an eligible U.S. browser-based number, a paid business VoIP service for managed numbers and SMS, KDE Connect for open-source device integration, and AirDroid for Android control. No single option combines carrier calling, app-based contacts, business administration and device management without trade-offs.
