Yes, you can train and serve useful AI models without Nvidia GPUs, but there is no universal replacement. Choose according to model memory, distributed-network design, framework portability and where you will run the hardware. AMD Instinct MI325X is the clearest self-hosted choice when memory capacity is the constraint. Intel Gaudi 3 is built around PCIe deployment and standard Ethernet scale-out. Google Cloud TPU v6e (Trillium) offers managed JAX and PyTorch training and serving. AWS Trainium2 is aimed at AWS-native training economics, while AWS Inferentia2 is principally an inference accelerator.
The figures below come from vendor documentation and announcements. Peak throughput and price-performance claims are not interchangeable: validate cost per useful training step, completed request or generated token on your own model before committing.

Quick decision map
- Need the most accelerator memory in a conventional server: evaluate AMD Instinct MI325X. AMD lists 256 GB of HBM3E and 6 TB/s bandwidth per accelerator, and describes an eight-accelerator platform with 2 TB of HBM3E.
- Want PCIe cards and Ethernet you already operate: Intel Gaudi 3 is designed for LLMs, multimodal models and enterprise retrieval-augmented generation, with PyTorch integration and migration tooling for GPU-based models.
- Prefer a managed cloud system with large, repeatable slices: Google Cloud TPU v6e supports JAX and PyTorch workflows, from one chip to a 256-chip pod, with an eight-chip configuration optimized for inference.
- Already standardized on AWS and training is the main cost: AWS Trainium2 is the AWS-specific training option. AWS announced general availability of Trn2 instances on December 3, 2024.
- Need economical AWS inference rather than general-purpose pretraining: AWS Inferentia2 is positioned for serving and reports improvements against Inf1 in AWS’s stated comparison.
What changes when you leave CUDA?
Replacing a GPU is a software decision as much as a hardware decision. CUDA-specific kernels, extensions and profiling tools will not automatically run on another accelerator. The supported paths in this group are different:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- AMD: port CUDA-oriented code to the ROCm software stack. Framework support, custom kernels, collective communication and third-party extensions all need verification for the ROCm version you plan to deploy.
- Intel Gaudi: use Intel’s Gaudi software and its PyTorch integration. Intel also advertises migration tools intended to help adapt GPU-based models.
- Google TPU: use JAX or PyTorch workflows that compile through the XLA-based TPU software path. Compilation time, supported operators and shape choices become part of the engineering workflow.
- AWS accelerators: use the AWS Neuron SDK and its framework integrations. Model graphs, operators and serving containers must be checked for the specific Trainium2 or Inferentia2 runtime.
A model that trains successfully is not necessarily production-ready. Recheck mixed-precision behavior, data-loader performance, distributed collectives, checkpoint formats, quantization and monitoring after the port. Keep a small representative test model and a fixed set of batches so that numerical and throughput comparisons are repeatable.

AMD Instinct MI325X: memory-first self-hosted training
Documented hardware
AMD’s 2024 MI325X datasheet lists 256 GB of HBM3E and 6 TB/s of HBM bandwidth per accelerator. AMD also describes an eight-accelerator MI325X platform with 2 TB of aggregate HBM3E (AMD, 2023). That capacity can be decisive for large-language-model fine-tuning or serving configurations that otherwise require more aggressive sharding.
| MI325X configuration | Documented value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Single accelerator memory | 256 GB HBM3E | More weights, optimizer state or larger batches can fit before memory is partitioned. |
| Single accelerator bandwidth | 6 TB/s | High-bandwidth access helps workloads that repeatedly stream parameters and activations. |
| Eight-accelerator platform | 2 TB HBM3E aggregate | Provides a large-memory platform for distributed training and serving. |
Where MI325X fits
MI325X is a strong candidate when you want to buy or host servers rather than rent a managed accelerator, and when model memory is the first sizing problem. The large HBM pool may reduce the number of shards or accelerators needed for a particular model, but it does not by itself establish faster training. Host CPU balance, PCIe topology, storage, networking, power delivery and the ROCm release can determine whether the theoretical memory advantage translates into useful throughput.
Checks before purchase
- Confirm the server’s power and cooling design for the installed accelerator count.
- Verify that the host has enough PCIe lanes and that peer-to-peer paths match your distributed-training design.
- Measure collective-communication speed over the actual network, not a specification sheet.
- Reproduce your model’s kernels and extensions on the exact ROCm version you will support.
- Benchmark a full training step, including input pipeline and checkpointing, rather than a synthetic matrix multiplication.
Intel Gaudi 3: PCIe cards and standard Ethernet scale-out
Positioning and hardware model
Intel says the Gaudi 3 PCIe card is designed for large-language models, multimodal models and enterprise RAG applications. Its stated networking approach is to use standard Ethernet infrastructure, allowing an organization to use equipment it already owns and to expand with commonly supported Ethernet hardware. Intel also lists OEM availability through Dell, HPE and Supermicro.
This makes Gaudi 3 attractive to teams that value conventional PCIe server integration and Ethernet operations over a proprietary cluster fabric. The practical benefit depends on the switches, cabling, congestion control and topology in your data center. Ethernet is not automatically fast enough for every distributed workload; test the communication pattern your model generates.

Software and migration
Gaudi 3 integrates with PyTorch, and Intel advertises migration tools for models originally developed for GPUs. Treat those tools as an entry point rather than a guarantee of drop-in compatibility. Audit custom CUDA extensions, fused attention implementations, quantization libraries, checkpoint loaders and observability integrations. Establish a supported operator list and a process for handling unsupported or numerically different kernels.
When Gaudi 3 is a good fit
- Your organization already deploys PCIe accelerator servers and operates Ethernet fabrics.
- PyTorch is the primary framework and the model uses operators covered by the Gaudi software stack.
- You need a scale-out design that can be procured through mainstream server OEMs.
- You can reproduce Intel’s claimed or published comparisons on your own model; vendor comparisons should remain directional until independently measured.
Google Cloud TPU v6e (Trillium): managed slices for training and serving
Published specifications
Google Cloud documents TPU v6e, also called Trillium, for transformer, text-to-image and convolutional-neural-network training, fine-tuning and serving. Each chip provides 918 BF16 TFLOPs, 32 GB of HBM and 1,638 GB/s of HBM bandwidth. A pod contains up to 256 chips. Google documents slice sizes from one to 256 chips and an eight-chip configuration optimized for inference.
| TPU v6e item | Published specification or option |
|---|---|
| BF16 compute per chip | 918 TFLOPs |
| HBM per chip | 32 GB |
| HBM bandwidth per chip | 1,638 GB/s |
| Pod scale | Up to 256 chips |
| Documented inference configuration | Eight chips |
| Framework workflows | JAX and PyTorch |
What managed TPU changes
You do not buy and rack TPU v6e hardware; you request Cloud TPU capacity and select a slice. Google manages the underlying service, while you still own framework compatibility, compilation and job orchestration. TPU programs are compiled, so tensor shapes, dynamic control flow and unsupported operations can affect startup time and achieved utilization. A model that relies heavily on custom CUDA kernels may require architectural or operator changes before it is practical on TPU.

AWS Trainium2: AWS-native training economics
Availability and stated goal
AWS describes Trainium as purpose-built chips for high-performance AI training and inference at scale. AWS announced general availability of Trn2 instances on December 3, 2024 and claimed 30–40% better price performance than current GPU-based EC2 instances. That percentage is an AWS vendor claim for its stated comparison, not a universal result.
Who should consider Trainium2
Trainium2 is most compelling when your data, orchestration, identity and deployment pipeline already live on AWS and you can use the AWS Neuron software path. The service can reduce friction around networking, storage and autoscaling inside one cloud, but it also increases dependence on Neuron-supported operators and AWS instance availability. Test the exact model, sequence lengths, precision and batch sizes that determine your bill.
How to evaluate the claim
- Record a baseline cost per optimizer step on the GPU instance and software version you currently use.
- Port the model to the supported Neuron framework integration without changing its target batch or sequence length.
- Measure compile time, warm-up, steady-state step time, checkpoint time and failed or retried jobs.
- Calculate cost per completed training step and cost per finished run, including storage and idle capacity.
- Repeat the test at the scale you expect to operate; communication overhead can change the ranking.
AWS Inferentia2: serving-focused acceleration
What it is for
AWS positions Inferentia2 as a machine-learning inference accelerator rather than a general-purpose pretraining platform. Its product documentation lists, in the stated comparison with Inf1, up to 3× compute performance, 4× accelerator memory, 4× throughput and 10× lower latency. Those are comparison figures for AWS’s Inf1 baseline and should not be read as a guarantee for every model.

When it makes sense
Choose Inferentia2 when the dominant requirement is serving trained models at predictable latency or lower cost inside AWS. Validate model conversion, supported operators, batching behavior and cold-start time through the AWS Neuron runtime. For pretraining, use a training-oriented accelerator instead; inference hardware can be excellent at serving while being the wrong economic or software choice for large optimizer-heavy jobs.

Choose by workload
Large-model pretraining
Start with memory and interconnect. MI325X is worth investigating when a large HBM pool can reduce sharding. Gaudi 3 is relevant when Ethernet-based scale-out and PyTorch integration fit your operations. Trainium2 is the AWS-specific path when managed cloud capacity and Neuron support align with your pipeline. TPU v6e can scale to large slices, but compilation and framework portability must be proven early.
Fine-tuning and experimentation
Fine-tuning often rewards fast iteration more than theoretical peak throughput. Compare environment startup, checkpoint restore, data loading and the time to obtain a validated result. A smaller TPU slice, an available AWS instance or an existing ROCm server may beat a larger system that spends hours compiling or waiting for quota.
Online inference
Measure p50 and tail latency at the concurrency, sequence length and batch policy your service uses. TPU v6e has a documented eight-chip inference configuration; Inferentia2 is explicitly positioned for serving; MI325X and Gaudi 3 can serve models when their runtimes and memory fit. Include model-load time, autoscaling behavior and observability in the test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Offline or batch inference
Throughput per dollar and accelerator utilization usually matter more than single-request latency. Run a fixed corpus through each candidate, count completed tokens or requests, and include preprocessing, storage reads and output handling. The winner can differ from the low-latency choice.
Best Value
A practical migration and benchmark plan
- Inventory dependencies. List CUDA kernels, compiler flags, precision modes, quantization, distributed libraries, checkpoint formats and monitoring agents.
- Freeze a reference run. Record model version, dataset shard, random seeds, batch and sequence lengths, precision, step time, memory use and validation metrics.
- Select the native software path. Use ROCm for MI325X, Intel’s Gaudi stack for Gaudi 3, JAX or PyTorch on XLA for TPU v6e, and AWS Neuron for Trainium2 or Inferentia2.
- Port the smallest representative job. Resolve unsupported operators and numerical differences before attempting a multi-node run.
- Test scale-out. Increase from one accelerator or slice to the intended production size while logging communication time, failed workers and restart behavior.
- Measure useful work. Report cost per training step, cost per completed run, cost per generated token or cost per completed request. Include compilation, warm-up, checkpointing and idle time.
- Validate production behavior. Check accuracy, latency percentiles, throughput under load, autoscaling, model updates and rollback procedures.
Procurement, capacity and operational pitfalls
Buying local hardware
Local MI325X or Gaudi 3 deployments require a complete platform decision: server chassis, power and cooling, PCIe layout, host memory, storage, NICs, switch compatibility, firmware and support contracts. An accelerator card’s memory specification does not reveal the performance of a finished server. Obtain a configuration-level quote and run an acceptance benchmark before expanding the cluster.
Using managed cloud capacity
TPU v6e and AWS accelerators add quota, reservation and regional-capacity concerns. A technically suitable slice is not useful if it cannot be obtained when jobs are scheduled. Account for reservation commitments, compilation queues, data locality, egress and the operational work needed to keep a serving endpoint warm.
Assuming framework compatibility
“Supports PyTorch” does not mean every PyTorch extension works unchanged. Check custom attention, fused optimizers, tokenization, distributed checkpointing and quantization. Keep a fallback environment during migration so a production incident does not become a forced rewrite.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Comparing peak numbers directly
HBM capacity, bandwidth, BF16 TFLOPs and vendor price-performance percentages describe different parts of the system. They are useful sizing signals, not a cross-vendor leaderboard. Use the same model, data, precision, batch, software maturity and scale when comparing results.
Bottom-line selection
Pick MI325X when fitting the model and minimizing sharding in a self-hosted platform is the priority. Pick Gaudi 3 when PCIe servers, standard Ethernet and PyTorch-oriented migration match your data-center skills. Pick TPU v6e when managed Google Cloud capacity and JAX or XLA-compatible workflows are acceptable. Pick Trainium2 for AWS-centered training after measuring Neuron performance and total run cost. Pick Inferentia2 when the problem is AWS inference latency or serving economics, not general-purpose pretraining.
In every case, make the final decision from a repeatable workload benchmark and an explicit software-support plan. That is the only reliable way to turn a documented specification or vendor claim into a production choice.
