Build a portfolio of new solar and wind, batteries and other storage, stronger transmission, geothermal or hydropower where local conditions support them, and aggressive efficiency and workload flexibility. Natural gas can cover near-term reliability gaps, but it is a fossil-fuel bridge rather than a zero-emissions solution.
This matters because data centers consumed about 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of global demand, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects about 945 TWh by 2030. A typical AI-focused facility uses as much electricity as 100,000 households; the largest facilities under construction could use 20 times that amount. The power plan therefore has to match a very large, highly variable load every hour, not merely buy enough annual clean-energy certificates.

What should replace nuclear power for AI data centers?
For most projects, the strongest non-nuclear design is a layered system:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- New renewable generation: solar and wind provide the bulk of low-marginal-cost energy and can be built faster than large central plants when land, transmission and interconnection are available.
- Firming and flexibility: batteries handle rapid AI load swings and short outages; demand response, geographic diversity and longer-duration storage cover longer gaps.
- Firm local resources: geothermal, hydropower or existing low-carbon grid capacity can supply steady output where the resource exists.
- Efficiency: better models, accelerators, cooling and utilization reduce the amount of new generation and grid capacity required.
- Dispatchable backup: natural gas can keep a facility online while cleaner resources and grid upgrades are being built, but its fuel, carbon and methane exposure must be explicit.
No portfolio is automatically clean or reliable. Its result depends on the site’s hourly load, weather, geology, water availability, transmission queue, permitting schedule and the operator’s emissions target. The IEA summarizes the stakes plainly: “Affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity supply will be a crucial determinant of AI development.”

How large is the electricity challenge?
Current and projected demand
According to the IEA’s 2025 analysis, data centers used 415 TWh worldwide in 2024. That was about 1.5% of global electricity consumption. The IEA expects data-center demand to reach approximately 945 TWh in 2030, more than doubling in six years as AI training and inference expand.
These are averages across a diverse industry. An AI-focused data center can consume roughly the electricity used by 100,000 households. The largest facilities under construction could consume about 20 times as much as that typical AI center. A project that looks modest in annual energy terms can therefore create a concentrated local capacity problem: hundreds of megawatts of continuous demand plus fast changes when computing jobs start, stop or shift.
Why annual energy is not enough
A data center may report that its annual electricity use is matched by renewable-energy certificates or a power-purchase agreement. That accounting does not prove that its servers are receiving carbon-free electricity in every hour. Solar production falls at night and in storms; wind output can be low across a region; hydroelectric output can be constrained by drought. The grid supplies the difference unless the operator contracts, stores or generates power on an hourly basis.

Annual certificates can support a broader market claim, but they should not be presented as proof of hourly physical supply.
Solar and wind paired with storage
Why this is the leading near-term buildout
Solar, land-based wind, batteries and efficiency are among the fastest-scalable and most cost-competitive responses identified by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Solar can be deployed in modules, while wind adds production at different hours and seasons. A geographically diverse portfolio smooths weather risk: a data center can combine projects in regions with different solar and wind profiles rather than depend on one local plant.
The IEA estimates that renewables will meet about half of the growth in global data-center electricity demand. It expects renewable generation serving data centers to increase by more than 450 TWh through 2035. In the United States, renewables currently provide 24% of data-center electricity and are expected to add 110 TWh between 2024 and 2030.

What the portfolio must include
- Overbuild: Installed renewable capacity has to exceed the average IT load because output is variable and some generation will be curtailed.
- Batteries: Short-duration batteries absorb sudden load changes, shift solar energy into evening hours and provide ride-through during grid disturbances.
- Demand response: Non-urgent training jobs, batch analytics and some cooling loads can move into periods of high renewable output, subject to service-level agreements.
- Grid purchases: A strong interconnection supplies prolonged renewable shortfalls and enables the facility to use regional diversity.
- Firm backup: Multi-day low-wind or low-sun events require hydro, geothermal, long-duration storage, dispatchable generation or a combination.
Where it works—and where it does not
Solar and wind are attractive when a project has land, a deliverable transmission connection and a manageable interconnection queue. A cheap generation contract is not useful if the line cannot deliver it when the servers need power. Local land-use conflicts, wildlife rules, curtailment, extreme weather and congestion can change the economics.
Solar and wind also use less operating water than thermal generation, but land and material requirements remain site-specific. A credible plan should publish its expected hourly generation, curtailment, storage dispatch and residual grid mix rather than only an annual renewable percentage.
Geothermal: a firm clean option where geology allows
Why geothermal fits an AI load
Geothermal plants draw on heat from underground reservoirs to produce steady electricity. The DOE says geothermal plants generally achieve a capacity factor of about 90%, allowing operation 24 hours a day with nearly continuous output. That profile is well suited to an AI facility whose servers run around the clock and whose operator wants less dependence on weather or batteries.
Conventional geothermal projects use naturally productive reservoirs. Enhanced geothermal systems may expand the resource base by engineering permeability, but they introduce exploration, drilling and reservoir-performance risk. In either case, output, drilling depth, permitting and financing are highly site-specific. A data center cannot assume that a favorable national resource map translates into a bankable project at its chosen location.
Cooling integration and Cold UTES
Geothermal planning can include thermal, not only electrical, benefits. The DOE describes Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage (Cold UTES) as a way to store cooling potential underground, shift cooling demand away from grid peaks and provide seasonal storage. This can reduce the amount of electrical capacity that must be reserved for chillers during hot periods.

Cooling integration does not make a geothermal project universal. The site still needs suitable geology, drilling access, permits, water and a commercial structure that can absorb exploration risk. A project may also need transmission or backup power before the geothermal plant reaches full output.

Hydropower and existing grid resources
Firm and flexible output
Hydropower can provide both steady electricity and rapid ramping, making it valuable alongside variable renewables and fluctuating AI demand. Existing dams, uprates, pumped-storage facilities and redevelopment of retired energy sites may deliver capacity faster than a greenfield plant. The DOE includes hydropower infrastructure, grid expansion and retired-site redevelopment in a whole-system response to data-center growth.
Geographic and environmental limits
Hydropower is constrained by river geography, environmental permits and competing water uses. Drought can reduce generation precisely when electricity demand and cooling needs are high. A contract that relies on a reservoir should disclose historical hydrology, drought scenarios, minimum-flow obligations and how replacement power is procured during low-water years.
Existing grid resources can be the least disruptive way to serve a new facility. Before building dedicated generation, a developer should examine unused capacity at substations, retired-plant sites, transmission upgrades and regional demand-response programs. These options may shorten the schedule, but they do not eliminate the need to verify deliverability during stressed hours.
Batteries and long-duration storage
What batteries solve
AI training and inference can create large, rapid power swings. The IEA notes that these swings differ from traditional data-center operation and make storage critical for reliable supply. Batteries can respond in milliseconds, smooth the facility’s net load, provide uninterruptible power during short disturbances and supply grid services that reduce the need for oversized generation.
The IEA estimates that 20–25 GW of battery storage could be installed at data centers globally by 2030. That is a global projection, not a sizing rule for an individual campus. Required capacity depends on the site’s peak megawatts, ramp rate, critical-load fraction, renewable profile, outage standard and market rules.
Choosing duration
| Need | Typical storage role | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Milliseconds to minutes | Power-quality support, ride-through and AI load-ramp control | What is the fastest measured load change, and which systems must remain online? |
| Several hours | Solar shifting, evening coverage and peak-demand reduction | How many consecutive low-renewable hours occur in the site’s weather record? |
| One to several days | Protection against prolonged storms, low wind or transmission outages | What firm resource or market replaces the battery when its state of charge is depleted? |
| Seasonal gaps | Moving energy across long weather or demand patterns | Is a long-duration technology, hydro reservoir, geothermal plant or dispatchable fuel more practical? |
Battery selection must account for degradation, fire protection, mineral supply, temperature, augmentation and end-of-life recycling. Lithium-ion systems are mature for short-duration applications, but a campus seeking multi-day or seasonal coverage may need different long-duration technologies or a portfolio of storage and firm generation. The least-cost design is not necessarily the one with the largest battery; it is the one that matches storage duration to the actual reliability obligation.

Natural gas, with or without carbon capture
Why developers use it
Natural gas is dispatchable and can be installed near load centers when grid connections are delayed. The IEA reports that gas currently supplies more than 40% of U.S. data-center electricity and is the largest source of additional U.S. supply through 2030. Gas turbines can cover peaks, provide backup while transmission is built and reduce exposure to short-term renewable shortfalls.
Why it is not a clean substitute
Combustion produces carbon dioxide, and methane leakage in production and transport can materially increase lifecycle emissions. A gas plant therefore does not meet a zero-emissions objective by itself. Carbon capture can reduce stack emissions, but only if capture performance, energy use, transport, injection, monitoring and long-term storage are all financed and permitted. A promise to add capture later is not equivalent to a bankable carbon-management pathway.
Before selecting gas, assess fuel-price exposure, pipeline capacity, air permits, local pollution, water needs, turbine lead times, noise and the possibility that a low-carbon grid will make the asset underutilized. If gas is used as a bridge, define a retirement or declining-run-time plan and specify how residual emissions are reported.
Efficiency and flexible computing
Reduce the load before building supply
Efficiency lowers every other requirement: generation, transmission, storage, cooling equipment and backup fuel. Measures include smaller or more efficient models, quantization, sparsity, workload-aware hardware selection, higher server utilization, power-management controls and improved data-center cooling. The relevant metric is not only facility power usage effectiveness; it is useful computation delivered per kilowatt-hour.
Move what can move
Training runs, data preprocessing, backups and batch inference may tolerate scheduling changes. Software can queue them for hours with abundant renewable output or lower grid carbon intensity. Some inference workloads cannot move because latency commitments, user geography or safety requirements demand continuous service. The operator should classify workloads by maximum delay, interruption tolerance and geographic portability before counting them as flexible.
Recommended Free Tools
On-site batteries can let a facility participate in demand-response events without shutting down critical servers. Spare compute capacity can also be reduced during grid emergencies if service-level agreements permit. Efficiency and flexibility do not replace firm capacity for nonstop workloads; they reduce the size and frequency of the firming problem.
Best Value
Grid expansion and interconnection are part of the power plant
The schedule risk
The IEA estimates that around 20% of planned data-center projects could be delayed by grid-connection risks. In advanced economies, new transmission lines can take four to eight years because of permitting, land acquisition, procurement and construction. A renewable project with a short construction time is therefore irrelevant to a campus that cannot obtain an energized interconnection.
Practical actions
- Secure an interconnection study early: Obtain a deliverability assessment for the expected peak load, not merely the average annual consumption.
- Map alternatives: Compare nearby substations, retired generation sites, behind-the-meter generation, demand-response contracts and phased campus energization.
- Use staged load growth: Bring halls online as transmission, storage and generation milestones are met instead of assuming the entire ultimate load arrives on day one.
- Coordinate with the utility and system operator: Share hourly load shapes, ramp rates, backup behavior and cooling demand so planners can model real conditions.
- Budget for network upgrades: Include transformers, switchgear, protection systems, transmission, distribution reinforcement and interconnection deposits in the schedule and cost model.
Grid expansion also improves renewable utilization. A stronger network can draw from a wider weather region, reduce curtailment and access existing hydro or wind resources. It is not a separate infrastructure issue; it determines whether the generation portfolio can serve the AI load.
How the main alternatives compare
| Option | Firm capacity and hourly matching | Emissions and lifecycle considerations | Deployment and site constraints | Storage, grid and cooling needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar plus wind | Variable; requires overbuild, geographic diversity, storage and grid purchases for continuous service | Low operational emissions; manufacturing, land, wildlife and material impacts vary by project | Fast relative scaling where land, permits and interconnection are available | Needs batteries, demand response and transmission; low operating water use |
| Geothermal | Firm output; geothermal plants generally have about a 90% capacity factor, according to DOE | Low operational emissions; drilling, induced-seismicity, fluids and reservoir performance require site assessment | Limited by geology, exploration success, drilling and permits | May integrate with Cold UTES for cooling; still needs backup during outages and construction |
| Hydropower | Firm and flexible where water and capacity are available | Low-carbon operation but ecosystem, reservoir, drought and competing-water-use impacts must be evaluated | Geographically constrained; existing sites may be faster than new dams | Can complement wind and solar; drought replacement and transmission must be planned |
| Batteries and long-duration storage | Storage duration determines coverage; batteries do not create energy without a charging source | Manufacturing, minerals, degradation, fire safety and recycling matter | Short-duration systems are deployable, while multi-day and seasonal systems have less standardized economics | Excellent for ramps and short outages; pair with renewables and firm resources |
| Natural gas | Dispatchable and suitable for peaks or bridge service | Carbon dioxide and methane risks; capture is credible only with a complete transport and storage chain | Fuel supply, air permits, pipelines, turbines, water and local pollution constrain projects | Reduces immediate storage needs but does not provide zero-emissions power |
| Efficiency and flexible computing | Reduces peak and energy requirements; cannot replace firm supply for uninterrupted critical loads | Usually lowers lifecycle impacts by avoiding generation and equipment | Can be deployed in software, hardware, cooling and operating practices | Improves every other option; depends on workload latency and service agreements |
Total system cost cannot be ranked universally from these categories. Fuel prices, financing, congestion, curtailment, water, carbon requirements, outage penalties and the cost of delayed compute can outweigh the generation price alone. A serious comparison should model hourly operations over multiple weather years and include network upgrades, storage replacement and backup emissions.
How can an AI data center run on renewables 24/7?
A practical 24/7 plan follows the facility’s hourly load rather than an annual energy target.
- Measure the load: Record hourly IT demand, cooling demand, ramp rates, critical and interruptible loads, and expected growth by hall.
- Build an hourly renewable profile: Model solar and wind production at the proposed sites using several years of weather data and include curtailment and transmission limits.
- Match short gaps: Size batteries for ramps, power quality, evening shifts and the outage duration they are contractually required to cover.
- Cover extended gaps: Add geothermal, hydropower, long-duration storage, firm grid contracts or a defined dispatchable backup for multi-day events.
- Make computing flexible: Schedule tolerant workloads in renewable-rich hours and cap noncritical load during grid emergencies.
- Verify each hour: Track generation, storage charging and discharging, grid imports and the emissions attributes of imported electricity. Publish the accounting method.
The result may use some grid electricity in difficult hours while still achieving a high hourly clean-energy percentage. The important distinction is transparent measurement: annual renewable matching and hourly carbon-free operation are different claims.
How much storage does an AI data center need?
There is no defensible universal battery size based only on a facility’s annual TWh consumption. Storage must be sized from at least five inputs:
- Peak electrical demand in megawatts and the maximum observed ramp in seconds or minutes.
- The number of hours of renewable shortfall the operator intends to cover.
- The fraction of load that is mission-critical and cannot be curtailed.
- Battery round-trip efficiency, usable depth of discharge, degradation and augmentation schedule.
- The availability and response time of hydro, geothermal, the grid, long-duration storage or backup generation.
For example, a battery designed for a 15-minute ride-through has a completely different power-to-energy ratio from one intended to shift solar through an eight-hour night. A campus seeking protection from several windless days cannot solve the problem by multiplying a short-duration battery without examining cost, fire protection, land and replacement needs. The IEA’s global estimate of 20–25 GW of data-center battery installations by 2030 demonstrates market scale, not a prescription for any one site.

Choose the portfolio by constraint
- Fastest initial capacity: Combine available grid capacity, solar or wind contracts, batteries and efficiency while longer transmission or firm projects are permitted.
- Highest hourly clean-energy confidence: Add geothermal or hydropower where resource studies support them, then use diverse renewables and long-duration storage.
- Weak transmission region: Prioritize a site with existing deliverable capacity, phased construction and local firm resources rather than relying on a distant PPA.
- Water-constrained region: Compare air-cooled or closed-loop cooling, low-water renewables, geothermal fluid management and drought-adjusted hydropower contracts.
- Strict zero-emissions target: Exclude unmitigated gas from the claimed clean supply and require hourly accounting, firm clean resources and a documented plan for extreme events.
- Urgent near-term commissioning: Use gas only as a clearly disclosed bridge, with fuel, emissions, permitting and retirement assumptions modeled from the start.
Questions every power contract should answer
- What hourly load and ramp profile is being served, and how will it change as the campus expands?
- Which generation is physically deliverable to the facility, and which is only an annual accounting instrument?
- How many consecutive hours or days can storage cover the critical load?
- What happens during drought, low wind, low solar, fuel-price spikes, transmission outages or battery degradation?
- Who pays for network upgrades, replacement batteries, fuel transport, carbon management and decommissioning?
- What emissions boundary is reported: operational, lifecycle, imported electricity, methane and backup generation?
- Which workloads can be delayed, relocated or throttled without violating customer commitments?
Bottom line: portfolio reliability beats a single replacement technology
Solar and wind plus storage are the most scalable starting point, but they need transmission, overbuild and firming to support a nonstop AI campus. Geothermal is the closest non-nuclear analogue for steady low-emissions output where drilling and geology cooperate. Hydropower and existing grid resources can add flexible capacity but are geographically and hydrologically limited. Batteries handle rapid swings and short outages; long-duration storage or firm generation is needed for prolonged renewable gaps. Efficiency and flexible computing reduce the size of every other investment. Natural gas can prevent near-term shortages, yet its carbon and methane footprint makes it a bridge rather than a clean endpoint.
The best project is therefore an hourly-tested portfolio tied to a real interconnection, realistic weather and drought scenarios, transparent emissions accounting, and a workload plan that distinguishes critical inference from movable computation. That approach can deliver reliable AI growth without assuming that any single technology can reproduce nuclear power’s firm output everywhere.
