Best alternatives to Microsoft’s PRAISE program for early-career software developers

CodePath is the closest documented substitute for an early-career developer program that combines technical instruction, mentoring, career preparation and employer access. Its Tech Fellow track adds paid peer-support work and leadership practice for students who have already completed a CodePath course. Major League Hacking (MLH) is a better match when your priority is building software in teams, contributing to open source or learning through hackathons. GitHub Education is useful as a supporting set of student resources rather than a complete fellowship.

There is an important qualification: the Microsoft source reviewed for this comparison does not identify a program named PRAISE. Its acronym, eligibility rules, location, benefits and dates are therefore unconfirmed. The options below are practical alternatives for the needs readers usually associate with a junior-developer fellowship, but no one should treat them as feature-for-feature replacements until Microsoft publishes an official PRAISE description.

What is known—and not known—about Microsoft PRAISE?

Microsoft Learn currently presents self-directed modules, learning paths, career paths, credentials and student resources. The official training page reviewed for this article does not define a program called PRAISE. That means there is no reliable public baseline for deciding whether an alternative matches its curriculum, mentorship model, stipend, location or employer relationships.

Before applying to anything described as a PRAISE alternative, confirm the original program from an official Microsoft page or brief. Look for five details:

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • What the acronym stands for and which Microsoft organization runs it.
  • Whether it is a course, fellowship, internship, community, scholarship or hiring pathway.
  • Who can apply, including student status, graduation date, technical prerequisites and country.
  • What participants receive: instruction, mentoring, pay, credentials, project work or interviews.
  • The current application window and whether the program is still operating.

Until those facts are available, the sensible approach is to choose an alternative by the outcome you need: structured learning, a portfolio project, open-source experience, paid responsibility or access to employers.

Quick comparison of the strongest alternatives

Option Primary format Practical output Mentorship Compensation Eligibility and reach Career or employer support
CodePath courses Intensive technical training; exact delivery format should be confirmed for the course Course-based technical skills and career preparation Mentorships are part of the stated offering No cost to students, according to CodePath College-focused; CodePath reports enrollment across 1,000+ colleges Comprehensive career services and employer connections
CodePath Tech Fellow Peer-support and leadership role following a CodePath course Communication, debugging and program-support experience High: fellows support other learners and program delivery Competitive hourly pay; amount not stated Recent CodePath course completion plus relevant computer-science preparation Leadership development and experience that can strengthen a résumé
MLH Fellowship Team-based, learn-by-doing fellowship Work on open-source projects with a team Mentors are part of the model Not stated in the available program evidence GitHub reports participation across 32+ regions Open-source track record and developer-community connections
MLH hackathons and community Short, practical, team-based events Working prototypes, demos and collaboration evidence Peer and event mentorship varies by event Not stated MLH reports 5M+ developers, 1,000+ annual events and activity in 100 countries Networking with developers, organizers and sponsors varies by event
GitHub Education Student resources and learning support Access to tools and a foundation for public project work Not a single standardized mentorship program Not stated Available to eligible students; exact requirements depend on the resource Useful companion to courses, hackathons and open-source work
Microsoft Learn Self-directed modules, learning paths and credentials Completed learning content and credentials Not presented as a dedicated fellowship in the cited training material Not stated Access rules vary by learning resource Career paths and student resources, but no PRAISE-specific employer promise is established

The comparison separates documented features from unknowns. A blank or “not stated” compensation cell does not mean a program is unpaid; it means the available evidence does not establish a payment amount or policy.

Why CodePath is the closest overall substitute

CodePath explicitly describes a package of “intensive technical training, mentorships, comprehensive career services, and employer connections” offered at no cost to students. That combination addresses more of the usual early-career problem than a standalone course or one-off event: you need to learn technical material, get feedback, translate it into résumé language and understand how hiring works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What CodePath provides

  • Technical training: structured instruction aimed at practical software skills rather than only theory.
  • Mentorship: guidance is part of the program description, although the mentor-to-student ratio, meeting schedule and mentor background should be confirmed for the specific course.
  • Career services: CodePath says its support is comprehensive; ask whether the current course includes résumé reviews, interview practice, recruiting events or another defined service.
  • Employer connections: the organization identifies employer relationships as part of its offering, but the form of those connections and any hiring guarantee are not established.
  • No student tuition: CodePath states that students receive the offering at no cost.

Scale and reported outcomes

CodePath’s current About page reports more than 50,000 college students enrolled and partnerships with more than 1,000 colleges. It also reports that 73% of students identified as low-income or underserved and an average salary of $95,000 one year after graduation for full-time technical roles. These are organization-reported figures, not independently audited outcomes. The salary number is an average for the described graduate group, not a promise to every participant, and it should not be read as a starting-salary guarantee.

Who should choose a CodePath course

Choose CodePath first if you are enrolled in college or connected to a participating institution and want an integrated path from instruction to recruiting preparation. It is especially relevant when you need regular guidance, have not yet built a substantial portfolio and want employer exposure alongside coursework.

Questions to ask before enrolling

  • Which programming languages, frameworks and project types does this specific course cover?
  • Is participation cohort-based, scheduled live, self-paced or a mixture?
  • How often do mentors meet students, and what feedback do they provide?
  • What career services are included and for how long?
  • Which employers participate in events or recruiting, and are opportunities limited by country or school?
  • What attendance, assignment and technical prerequisites apply?

CodePath Tech Fellow: the paid leadership option

The Tech Fellow program is not a beginner course that anyone can enter directly. CodePath says applicants must have recently completed a CodePath course and possess relevant computer-science preparation. The role includes competitive hourly pay, leadership development and opportunities to improve communication and debugging skills.

What the role involves

Tech Fellows support the success of CodePath programs. In practice, that makes the role useful for a developer who wants evidence of technical communication, peer coaching, issue diagnosis and team responsibility—not just another certificate. The exact workload, term length, hourly rate and location are not stated in the available program description, so confirm them before treating the position as a reliable income source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Tech Fellow is a better fit than a general fellowship

  • You have completed a CodePath course recently and can demonstrate that knowledge.
  • You enjoy explaining technical concepts and debugging with other learners.
  • You want paid experience while developing leadership and communication skills.
  • You need a stepping-stone role before applying for software internships or junior engineering jobs.

If you have not taken a CodePath course, start with an eligible course or another documented training route; do not assume Tech Fellow accepts unrelated coursework.

MLH Fellowship for real team and open-source experience

Major League Hacking describes its Fellowship as “Learn by doing, on a team.” That emphasis makes it the strongest alternative when your main gap is practical collaboration. Instead of only completing lessons, you work with others on an open-source project and learn the habits that employers often seek: using version control, reviewing changes, communicating asynchronously, handling issues and shipping incremental improvements.

What you can realistically build

  • A public contribution history that hiring managers can inspect.
  • Experience reading an existing codebase rather than starting every project from a blank repository.
  • Team practices such as pull requests, issue tracking, code review and shared planning, depending on the assigned project.
  • Examples of technical decisions and trade-offs you can discuss in interviews.

Mentorship and geography

GitHub’s diversity, inclusion and belonging page states that the MLH Fellowship pairs students with open-source projects and mentors across more than 32 regions. That is a broad reach, not a guarantee that every cohort accepts applicants from every country. Check the current cohort’s location rules, schedule, time-zone expectations and project list.

Compensation and workload

The available evidence does not state a current stipend, hourly rate or other compensation policy for the MLH Fellowship. Do not budget around payment until the live application materials specify it. Also verify the expected weekly commitment, cohort dates and whether you must be available during particular hours.

MLH hackathons: a shorter route to demonstrable work

If a multi-week fellowship is not practical, MLH hackathons provide concentrated project practice. MLH reports a community of more than 5 million developers, over 1,000 annual events and activity in 100 countries. Those figures describe the organization’s reported network, not the attendance or mentor quality of any single event.

What a hackathon can prove

A finished prototype, a repository, a short demo and a clear explanation of your contribution can give a beginner more interview material than a list of tutorials. The strongest submission documents the problem, architecture, technology choices, division of work, obstacles and next steps. Keep the project public only if it contains no confidential data or credentials.

How to choose an event

  • Prefer an event with a theme aligned to the job family you want, such as web, mobile, data or developer tools.
  • Check whether teams are formed before the event or on arrival.
  • Look for stated mentor availability, judging criteria and submission requirements.
  • Confirm whether participation is remote, in person or restricted to a campus or country.
  • Read the rules on intellectual property, use of pre-existing code and artificial-intelligence tools.

Hackathons are excellent for momentum and networking, but they usually do not replace sustained mentorship or a multi-month curriculum. Pair one with a longer learning plan if your fundamentals need work.

GitHub Education as the supporting layer

GitHub Education is best understood as an enabling resource, not a single fellowship with one curriculum and one mentor structure. GitHub reports more than 180 million developers, 4 million organizations and 5 million students reached through GitHub Education. Those are GitHub-reported figures. Eligibility and the specific resources available can change, so verify your student status and the current offer.

How to use it effectively

  1. Confirm eligibility with your current academic identity or institution.
  2. Create a professional GitHub profile with a short biography, location or time zone if relevant, and links to your portfolio.
  3. Pin two or three projects that show different skills; each repository should include a README, setup steps, screenshots or a demo, tests where practical, and a note describing your contribution.
  4. Use the available student resources to remove tooling barriers, but keep a record of what you built yourself.
  5. Combine the account with CodePath coursework, an MLH event or an open-source contribution so the profile shows sustained work rather than unused access.

GitHub Education can make learning and publishing easier, but it does not by itself provide the intensive mentorship, career services or employer connections that CodePath documents.

Where Microsoft Learn fits

Microsoft Learn is a reasonable supplement when you want self-directed modules, learning paths, career paths, credentials or student resources. It is useful for filling a specific knowledge gap—for example, learning a language, platform or development practice before joining a project.

It is not a documented substitute for a cohort fellowship with paid peer responsibility or guaranteed mentor contact. The current Microsoft training material reviewed here does not connect those resources to a PRAISE program. Use Learn to prepare for a CodePath course, an MLH project or a job interview, and verify the current credential requirements before listing one on your résumé.

Choose by the gap in your experience

Your main need Best starting point Why What to verify
I need structured instruction and recruiting help. CodePath course Combines technical training, mentorship, career services and employer connections at no cost to students. Course availability through your college, schedule, prerequisites and current career-service details.
I want paid responsibility and leadership practice. CodePath Tech Fellow Offers competitive hourly pay and leadership development after a qualifying CodePath course. Recent-course requirement, computer-science preparation, rate, term and workload.
I need team-based software and open-source contributions. MLH Fellowship Places fellows on open-source projects with a learn-by-doing team model and mentors. Region, cohort dates, project choices, weekly commitment and compensation.
I need a fast portfolio project. MLH hackathon Produces a prototype and collaboration story in a concentrated event. Event format, mentor access, rules, team formation and follow-up support.
I need student tooling and a public development home. GitHub Education Supports eligible students and complements other programs. Current student verification and which resources are included.
I need to learn a specific technology independently. Microsoft Learn Provides self-directed modules, paths and credentials. Current module version, assessment requirements and whether the credential matches your target role.

A practical 90-day plan for a beginner

Days 1–14: establish your baseline

  1. Choose one target role, such as front-end developer, backend developer, data-focused developer or generalist junior engineer.
  2. List the languages, tools and project evidence that role commonly requires; do not try to learn every stack at once.
  3. Apply for an appropriate CodePath course, verify GitHub Education eligibility and identify one upcoming MLH event or fellowship window.
  4. Clean your development environment and create a GitHub profile that uses your real name or a consistent professional identity.

Days 15–45: produce one complete project

  1. Follow a structured course or learning path for the fundamentals your target role needs.
  2. Build a small application with a defined user problem, readable code, version history and basic tests.
  3. Ask a mentor, instructor, peer or event reviewer for specific feedback on one technical and one communication issue.
  4. Rewrite the README so another developer can install, run and understand the project without your help.

Days 46–75: work with other developers

  1. Join a hackathon or make a small, well-scoped open-source contribution.
  2. Use issues, branches and pull requests rather than editing the default branch informally.
  3. Record the decisions you made, the feedback you received and the parts you personally delivered.
  4. Practice a five-minute explanation of the project, including one failure and how you fixed it.

Days 76–90: convert work into applications

  1. Pin your strongest repositories and remove unfinished experiments that distract from your target role.
  2. Turn each project into résumé bullets that state the action, technology and measurable result without exaggeration.
  3. Apply for the next suitable CodePath or MLH opportunity; if eligible, investigate Tech Fellow after completing a CodePath course.
  4. Ask for referrals or informational conversations through the communities you joined, while being clear about the role you seek.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming PRAISE has a fixed public definition

Do not repeat an acronym expansion, stipend or eligibility rule copied from an unofficial post. The Microsoft source reviewed here does not establish those details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating reported outcomes as guarantees

CodePath’s enrollment, demographic and salary figures are reported by CodePath and are not independently audited in the available evidence. Use them as context, then ask how the current course measures completion and placement.

Confusing access with mentorship

A student resource, software benefit or learning module can remove friction, but it does not automatically create regular feedback. If mentorship is your priority, choose a program that explicitly describes mentors and confirm the contact model.

Listing participation without an artifact

A fellowship or hackathon name is weaker than a repository, contribution, demo or documented technical decision. Preserve work samples and explain your own contribution.

Ignoring geography and timing

MLH’s global network and the MLH Fellowship’s reported 32-plus regions do not mean every event or cohort is open worldwide. Confirm country, time zone, student status, dates and weekly availability on the live program page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a product purchase to substitute for a program

Books, hardware kits and interview guides can support practice, but they do not replace mentoring, recognition, employer connections or a fellowship structure. Spend first on the program gap you actually have.

How to verify a program before applying

  1. Use the organization’s current official program page, not an undated social post or reposted announcement.
  2. Check the publication or update date and confirm that applications are open for your intended cohort.
  3. Read the full eligibility section, including school status, graduation timing, country and prerequisite knowledge.
  4. Look for an explicit description of mentor access, project expectations, schedule and compensation.
  5. Confirm what you receive at completion: certificate, portfolio artifact, reference, interview access or simply participation.
  6. Save the terms you relied on when applying, because program details can change between cohorts.

On the evidence currently available, CodePath is the most complete general substitute, Tech Fellow is the most relevant paid progression after CodePath coursework, MLH is the strongest project-first route, and GitHub Education is the most useful companion resource. None can be called an exact PRAISE replacement until Microsoft documents what PRAISE is.
