Best alternatives to iOS 27 AI Shortcuts on Android

There is no single Android feature that matches every part of iOS 27 AI Shortcuts. The right replacement depends on your phone and the work you want automated: Samsung Modes and Routines is the closest built-in option on Galaxy devices, Tasker offers the deepest control, MacroDroid is easier to learn, IFTTT connects cloud services and smart-home platforms, and Gemini multi-step tasks point toward prompt-driven automation but remain a limited beta.

What iOS 27 AI Shortcuts actually adds

Apple’s iOS 27 changes matter because they combine three capabilities that Android alternatives generally split across several products:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Natural-language shortcut creation: Apple’s iPhone guide tells users to open Shortcuts and describe what they want the shortcut to do.
  • Apple Intelligence assistance: Apple says, “Existing shortcuts automatically get summarized with Apple Intelligence in the shortcut editor.” The statement appears in Apple Support’s New in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS 27, published September 29, 2026.
  • A broad action model: iOS 27 can use Apple Foundation Models, cloud models such as Claude and Gemini, or another provider that conforms to Apple’s Language Model protocol, according to Apple’s WWDC26 developer guide.

Apple’s own guide lists Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, plus iPhone 16 or later, as supported hardware. Siri AI is described as a beta feature, and some server-side Apple Intelligence features have daily usage limits. Availability can therefore vary by device, software version, language, account and region.

Android automation has existed for years, but it is more fragmented. Samsung provides a native If/Then system on Galaxy phones; Tasker and MacroDroid build local device workflows; IFTTT specializes in cloud-connected applets; and Google’s Gemini multi-step tasks are the closest current Android equivalent to describing a multi-step job in ordinary language. None currently combines all of those capabilities with universal Android coverage.

Which Android alternative should you choose?

Your priority Best starting point Why it fits Main limitation
Built-in automation on a Galaxy phone Samsung Modes and Routines Native If triggers and Then actions, with optional assistant activation Availability depends on device and software version
Maximum control and complex logic Tasker Deep profiles, tasks, variables, plugins and device-state handling Steeper setup and learning curve
Visual builder with less technical overhead MacroDroid Trigger, action and constraint interface without programming Requires third-party permissions and is subject to Android limits
Smart-home and web-service connections IFTTT Android Activity and Device integrations plus cross-service applets Depends on cloud services and their integrations
Prompt-driven, multi-step execution Gemini multi-step tasks Natural-language beta direction with app actions exposed to an AI agent Limited devices, apps and regions

Use the matrix as a starting point rather than a performance ranking. No independent test in the available documentation measures execution reliability across these tools, so the meaningful comparison is capability, coverage and fit.

Samsung Modes and Routines: the closest built-in replacement for Galaxy owners

Samsung’s official guide describes Modes and Routines as an If/Then automation system. You select an event or condition, choose the action that should follow, and save the routine. For example, arriving at work can mute notification sounds and turn on Wi-Fi; bedtime can lower screen brightness. You can invoke a routine from Modes and Routines, Bixby or Google Assistant.

What it can automate

  • Context triggers: location and other conditions documented by Samsung, including arriving at a place.
  • Device actions: notification sound behavior, Wi-Fi and screen brightness.
  • Custom modes: Do Not Disturb, app restrictions, appearance changes and widgets.
  • Assistant access: routines can be started through Bixby or Google Assistant as well as the settings interface.

How to create a routine

  1. Open Modes and Routines in Samsung Settings.
  2. Create a new routine and define the If trigger, such as a place, time or device condition offered by your model.
  3. Choose the Then action, such as changing sound behavior, Wi-Fi or brightness.
  4. Save the routine, then test it under the same conditions in which you expect it to run.

Samsung cautions that the feature set varies by device and software version. A routine shown in a current Galaxy guide may not appear on an older model or a different regional firmware build. This is why Modes and Routines is the best native Galaxy option, not a universal Android Shortcuts replacement.

Tasker: the deepest Android automation option

Tasker is the choice when a simple If/Then rule is not enough. Its official user guide is organized around profiles, tasks and variables, with behavior that can differ by Android device. A profile watches for a context; a task performs one or more actions; variables let later actions use values collected earlier.

When Tasker is the better fit

  • You need several branches, conditions or sequential actions in one workflow.
  • You want detailed handling of device state rather than a fixed preset.
  • You need plugins or integrations that extend what the core app exposes.
  • You are comfortable granting permissions, testing edge cases and maintaining a workflow after Android updates.

What to expect during setup

Tasker rewards planning. Define the event that starts the profile, list each action in order, and identify the variables that pass information between steps. Then test with the phone unlocked and with the expected connectivity state. Android background restrictions, permission revocations and manufacturer power-saving rules can change behavior, so a workflow that works during manual testing may need additional exclusions or permissions before it runs consistently.

The trade-off is complexity. Tasker provides more control than Samsung’s guided routines or a basic visual builder, but it asks you to understand profiles, tasks, variables and device-specific behavior. Choose it for capability, not for the shortest setup.

MacroDroid: a more approachable visual builder

MacroDroid uses a three-part model: choose a trigger, add one or more actions, and optionally apply constraints. Its vendor says no programming knowledge is required and advertises more than 350 built-in triggers, actions and constraints. The same vendor page reports more than 30 million downloads. Those figures are self-reported vendor claims, accessed October 20, 2026, rather than an independent audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why beginners often start here

  • The visual structure makes the cause-and-effect relationship explicit.
  • Constraints let you prevent an automation from running in the wrong context.
  • The approach is less abstract than building a large variable-driven Tasker project.

A practical MacroDroid workflow

  1. Choose a trigger, such as a connection, time, notification or other event offered by the app and your Android version.
  2. Add the actions that should run after the trigger.
  3. Add constraints so the macro runs only when the required state is true.
  4. Grant the permissions requested by the actions, then run a controlled test.
  5. Review the macro’s history or behavior if it does not fire, and check Android battery restrictions before rebuilding it.

MacroDroid is still a third-party automation layer. Its available actions depend on Android permissions and on what your manufacturer allows in the background. It is best understood as a balance between Tasker’s depth and Samsung’s guided experience.

IFTTT: best when one automation crosses several services

IFTTT is strongest when the job is not confined to one phone. Its Android documentation covers Activity triggers for driving, running and bicycling, plus Device automations based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, ringtone, music and navigation actions. The service’s comparison guidance positions its applets around cross-service automation rather than the deep local device control associated with Tasker or MacroDroid.

Good IFTTT use cases

  • Use an Android activity as the trigger for a smart-home or web-service action.
  • Connect calendar, messaging, smart-home and other online services in one applet.
  • React to a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection and then call an action in another service.

The cloud model is both its advantage and its limitation. Cross-service actions are possible because IFTTT connects accounts and services online, but an applet can depend on an internet connection, a third-party API and the continued availability of that integration. If your requirement is changing a local system setting at a precise moment, Tasker, MacroDroid or Samsung’s native tool is usually a more direct fit.

Gemini multi-step tasks: the closest AI-agent direction

Google has announced Gemini multi-step daily tasks as a beta feature, initially for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the United States and South Korea. The feature is therefore not a general Android capability that every Gemini user can enable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google separately describes Android AppFunctions, a framework in which apps expose data and actions directly to AI agents. The initial curated beta covers food delivery, grocery and rideshare categories in the United States and South Korea. In practical terms, an eligible Gemini user could describe a multi-step objective, while supported apps provide the actions Gemini is allowed to perform.

Why this matters for the Shortcuts comparison

Gemini is the only option in this group explicitly moving toward natural-language, agent-led execution instead of requiring every step to be assembled manually. That makes it conceptually closest to iOS 27’s prompt-driven shortcut creation. Its current limits are substantial, however:

  • Device eligibility: the announced beta starts with specific Pixel and Galaxy models.
  • Geography: the initial availability is the United States and South Korea.
  • App coverage: AppFunctions begins with a curated set of categories, not every Android app.
  • Beta status: features, supported actions and account requirements can change during rollout.

Choose Gemini only when your device, region and apps are explicitly eligible and your goal matches the supported task types. For dependable, repeatable local automation today, a manually configured tool remains more broadly applicable.

How the alternatives compare on the five decisions that matter

1. Device coverage

Samsung Modes and Routines is tied to Galaxy hardware and software. Tasker and MacroDroid target Android more broadly, although individual permissions and manufacturer restrictions affect what they can do. IFTTT’s Android triggers also depend on the device and service integrations. Gemini multi-step tasks have the narrowest documented rollout because eligibility is limited by device, app and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Trigger depth

Samsung documents context-based If triggers and examples involving location, time and device state. Tasker is designed for granular profiles and detailed state handling. MacroDroid offers a large catalog of triggers, actions and constraints, with the vendor advertising more than 350 combined components. IFTTT focuses on Android Activity and Device events such as driving, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ringtone, music and navigation. Gemini’s trigger model is conversational: you state an objective, and the agent attempts the supported steps.

3. Action reach

Samsung’s examples center on system behavior such as sound, Wi-Fi, brightness, Do Not Disturb, app restrictions, appearance and widgets. Tasker can chain device actions, variables and plugins. MacroDroid provides actions exposed through its builder and Android permissions. IFTTT reaches external services and smart-home platforms. Gemini can act through apps that expose supported AppFunctions, but the beta’s app categories are curated.

4. AI input

Gemini is the most direct natural-language option in the Android set, although its multi-step feature is still a limited beta. Samsung, Tasker, MacroDroid and IFTTT primarily require you to construct workflows through their interfaces. They can be easier to reason about because every trigger and action is visible, but they do not reproduce iOS 27’s described “describe what you want” workflow.

5. Learning curve and reliability

Guided interfaces reduce setup time, while power-user systems expose more knobs and therefore more failure points. Tasker requires the most conceptual learning. MacroDroid makes the same trigger/action/constraint logic more approachable. Samsung is simplest when your desired action is one of its built-in options. IFTTT avoids much local configuration but adds cloud-service dependencies. Gemini reduces manual construction but introduces beta eligibility and agent uncertainty. There is no independent cross-tool reliability benchmark in the cited documentation, so do not treat any ordering as a measured uptime or success-rate result.

Decision guide: pick the tool by the job

If you own a Galaxy and want a phone setting to change automatically

Start with Samsung Modes and Routines. It is native, uses an If/Then model and can be launched through Samsung’s settings or assistants. Check that your exact device and software version expose the trigger and action you need.

If the workflow has branching logic or many steps

Use Tasker. Its profiles, tasks and variables are designed for complex state-dependent behavior. Plan permissions and battery-management exceptions before you build a large workflow.

If you want a visual builder without learning programming concepts

Try MacroDroid. The trigger/action/constraint model is clear, and the vendor advertises more than 350 built-in components. Treat the download and component counts as vendor-reported figures, not independent measurements.

If the workflow connects your phone to online services

Choose IFTTT. Its Android Activity and Device triggers are useful when the result belongs in a smart-home platform, calendar, messaging service or other web service. Confirm that each service integration remains available and that the applet can run when your phone is offline or background-restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you specifically want to describe a task to an AI

Check Gemini multi-step task eligibility first. The documented beta is for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the United States and South Korea, with app support tied to Android AppFunctions and an initially curated set of categories. If you are outside that combination, use a manual automation tool instead of assuming the feature is available.

Permissions, background limits and testing

Android automation is only as reliable as the permissions and operating-system policies behind it. Before troubleshooting the workflow itself, verify the conditions that commonly stop an automation:

  • Permission state: an update or security change can revoke access to location, notifications, Bluetooth, accessibility or other capabilities an action requires.
  • Battery optimization: manufacturer power-saving policies can suspend background automation.
  • Connectivity: IFTTT applets and cloud-assisted actions need the relevant internet and service connections.
  • Device differences: a setting available on one Galaxy model or Android build may be absent on another.
  • Trigger timing: location, activity and connection events may not fire at the exact second you expect because Android batches or delays background work.

Test each workflow with one trigger and one visible action first. Add complexity only after that basic path works. For a multi-step job, record the expected state before every step, then test with the screen locked, with the relevant network available and after a device restart. This separates a logic error from a permission or background-policy problem.

What Android still lacks compared with iOS 27’s model

The gap is not simply the absence of an app named Shortcuts. iOS 27 presents natural-language creation, Apple Intelligence summarization and a model-provider framework as parts of one platform experience. Android’s current choices divide those responsibilities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native Samsung routines cover common device contexts but are not available across Android.
  • Tasker and MacroDroid provide broad local automation but generally require manual workflow design.
  • IFTTT connects services but relies on cloud integrations rather than a universal local action model.
  • Gemini introduces agent-style execution, but only for an announced beta with constrained devices, regions and app categories.

That division can be an advantage if you want to choose exactly how much control or cloud access to allow. It is a disadvantage if you expect one prompt to discover and safely chain arbitrary system and app actions on any Android phone.

Bottom line

For most readers, the practical answer is conditional: Galaxy owners should try Samsung Modes and Routines first; power users should choose Tasker; people who want a friendlier visual builder should use MacroDroid; cross-service and smart-home workflows belong in IFTTT; and Gemini multi-step tasks are worth checking only if the announced beta supports your device, region and apps. Android has strong Shortcuts alternatives, but as of the documented October 20, 2026 availability, no single option is a universal equivalent to iOS 27’s AI-assisted, natural-language shortcut system.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
