For a single fund covering Southeast Asia, the closest substitute for an Indonesia ETF is the Global X FTSE Southeast Asia ETF (ASEA). It holds companies from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines and tracks the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index. If your priority is income rather than broad market exposure, the UOBAM Ping An FTSE ASEAN Dividend Index ETF (UPD in SGD or UPU in USD) is the more targeted option. Active ASEAN funds, broader emerging-Asia ETFs and a basket of single-country funds serve different objectives and carry different implementation work.

The right choice depends on whether you want regional breadth, dividend screening, manager discretion, diversification beyond ASEAN or control over each country’s weight. The comparisons below use the latest dates supplied by each issuer; holdings, fees, yields and exchange availability can change.

Match the replacement to your actual objective

An Indonesia ETF gives you concentrated exposure to one market. Replacing it with a Southeast Asia vehicle changes both geography and portfolio construction. Start by deciding which of these outcomes you need:

Objective Most relevant route What changes versus an Indonesia-only fund
One-ticket ASEAN coverage ASEA Five-country exposure through a passive, market-cap-weighted index; Singapore is the largest country weight in the dated fact sheet.
Higher-income screening UPD/UPU Dividend-focused index, listed on SGX in SGD and USD; distributions are not guaranteed and may include capital.
Manager-selected ASEAN stocks JPMorgan Funds ASEAN Equity Active security selection instead of tracking the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index; fees and dealing terms depend on the share class and platform.
Less dependence on any one ASEAN market GMF Broader emerging-Asia exposure, adding countries outside ASEAN; holdings and sector weights are date-specific.
Exact country allocations THD, EWM and EPHE combined You set Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines weights yourself, but must trade and rebalance the basket.

ASEA: the clearest one-ticket regional substitute

The Global X FTSE Southeast Asia ETF (ASEA) is designed for investors who want one listed vehicle spanning Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Global X says it seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index. The fund’s primary exchange is NYSE Arca.

Key fund facts

Item Reported detail Date or qualification
Holdings 40 Global X fund page, October 16, 2026
Total expense ratio 0.65% annually Global X fund page, October 16, 2026; the SEC prospectus reports 0.65% annual operating expenses
Index FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index Passive index objective
Geographic mandate Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines The SEC prospectus says at least 80% of assets are invested in securities economically tied to the five markets
Primary exchange NYSE Arca Global X fund page, October 16, 2026
Inception February 16, 2011 Global X fund page, October 16, 2026

The 0.65% expense ratio is an annual fund expense deducted from assets, not a separate bill. Your broker may add commissions, foreign-exchange costs or a bid-ask spread. Check the live quote and trading volume before placing an order.

ASEA is broad, but it is not equal-weighted

Global X’s March 31, 2025 fact sheet showed the following country allocation:

Country Weight Source date
Singapore 45.41% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Thailand 18.01% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Indonesia 17.35% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Malaysia 15.34% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Philippines 3.89% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025

These figures add to a regional portfolio, but they do not represent five equal country bets. Nearly half of the dated allocation was Singapore, while the Philippines was below 4%. If you buy ASEA to reduce Indonesia risk, remember that Indonesia remained 17.35% in that fact sheet; it is a regional fund, not an Indonesia-exclusion fund.

Sector concentration matters as much as country count

The SEC filing also noted significant exposure to financial companies and concentration in banking as of December 31, 2025. Singapore’s large weight can therefore make ASEA behave partly like a Singapore and financials allocation, especially when banks drive regional returns. Read the latest holdings and sector breakdown before investing because index weights move with prices and rebalances.

When ASEA is a good fit

  • You want one U.S.-listed trade covering five ASEAN markets.
  • You prefer a transparent passive index to a manager’s security-selection decisions.
  • You accept that market-cap weighting can leave Singapore and financials dominant.
  • You can trade NYSE Arca and are comfortable with the fund’s 0.65% annual expense ratio.

When ASEA is not a precise fit

  • You need a high or specifically targeted distribution rate.
  • You want to exclude Indonesia entirely.
  • You need equal country weights or a large Philippines allocation.
  • Your account cannot trade U.S.-listed ETFs or your tax rules make that domicile inconvenient.

UPD and UPU: the dividend-oriented SGX alternative

The UOBAM Ping An FTSE ASEAN Dividend Index ETF targets income rather than simply reproducing the broad FTSE/ASEAN 40 universe. UOBAM says it replicates the FTSE ASEAN ex REITs Target Dividend Index. The fund is listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX): UPD is the SGD trading line and UPU is the USD trading line.

Item Reported detail Date or qualification
Management fee 0.45% per year UOBAM, 2026
SGX listing date January 29, 2026 UOBAM, 2026
Index constituents 97 UOBAM, April 30, 2026
Trading lines UPD (SGD) and UPU (USD) UOBAM, 2026
Index scope FTSE ASEAN ex REITs Target Dividend Index Dividend-screened ASEAN mandate

How to interpret the headline yield

UOBAM reported a 7.0% gross trailing yield for the target-dividend index versus 4.9% for the FTSE ASEAN Index, measured on March 31, 2026 using Bloomberg/UOBAM data. Those are historical index figures, not a forecast of your personal return. UOBAM explicitly states: “Distributions are not guaranteed. Distributions may be made up of income, capital gains, and/or capital.”

A target-dividend methodology can select companies with higher indicated yields, but a high distribution does not remove share-price risk, currency risk or the possibility of capital being returned. Review the fund’s distribution notices, ex-dividend dates and tax treatment in your jurisdiction.

UPD or UPU: choosing the currency line

UPD trades in Singapore dollars and UPU trades in U.S. dollars. The currency of the trading line affects the cash you use to buy and sell; it does not necessarily eliminate the underlying companies’ exposure to local currencies. Compare the spread and typical trading activity on the specific line available to you. Access to SGX, Singapore-dollar funding and your broker’s rules for Singapore-listed ETFs are practical prerequisites.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Who should consider UPD/UPU

  • Investors who explicitly prioritize dividend-oriented screening.
  • Those able to trade SGX and evaluate Singapore-listed fund and tax arrangements.
  • Readers who understand that a distribution target is not a guaranteed yield or total return.

Active ASEAN funds: JPMorgan ASEAN Equity

JPMorgan Funds ASEAN Equity seeks long-term capital growth by investing primarily in companies from ASEAN member countries. It is an active fund, so a portfolio manager can overweight or underweight countries, sectors and individual companies rather than follow ASEA’s FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index.

What active management changes

  • Potential flexibility: The manager can avoid companies or sectors considered unattractive and seek opportunities outside a fixed index’s constituents.
  • Manager risk: Results depend on investment decisions, research and portfolio changes; underperformance versus a passive benchmark is possible.
  • Different dealing: Mutual-fund share classes may price once daily and may have minimums, subscriptions, redemptions or platform charges. The applicable fee and dealing terms were not stated in the supplied product information, so check the exact share class.
  • Less mechanical exposure: Country and sector weights can differ materially from ASEA, making the fund unsuitable if you need predictable index composition.

Use the fund’s current prospectus and factsheet to verify domicile, share-class currency, ongoing charges, dealing frequency and any performance fee before purchase. Compare those terms with the all-in cost and intraday tradability of an ETF.

GMF: broader emerging-Asia diversification

GMF is relevant when “Southeast Asia exposure” is part of a wider emerging-Asia allocation rather than the entire objective. A broader emerging-Asia mandate can add countries outside ASEAN and thereby reduce dependence on Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That broader scope also means less control over the exact ASEAN share of the portfolio. State Street’s factsheet emphasizes that the holdings and sector figures shown are as of a stated date and subject to change. Always record the factsheet date beside any country-weight table you use; a current portfolio may differ significantly from an older snapshot.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

When a broader fund makes sense

  • You want emerging-Asia diversification and are willing to own non-ASEAN markets.
  • Your existing portfolio is already concentrated in one ASEAN country.
  • You prefer one trade over assembling several country funds.

GMF is not a pure ASEAN replacement. Check its latest country list, sector mix, expense ratio, exchange, trading currency and spread to confirm that the resulting exposure matches your plan.

Build your own basket with THD, EWM and EPHE

A modular approach uses the iShares MSCI Thailand ETF (THD), iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (EWM) and iShares MSCI Philippines ETF (EPHE), identified as country building blocks that overlap with ASEA’s regional exposure. You can add or omit Indonesia separately and set the weights yourself.

Advantages

  • Precise control over country allocations.
  • Ability to reduce or eliminate Indonesia exposure.
  • Freedom to overweight a market that is underrepresented in a regional fund, such as the Philippines in ASEA’s March 31, 2025 snapshot.
  • Clear rebalancing rules tailored to your risk tolerance.

Costs and trade-offs

  • Each holding has its own expense ratio, spread and trading liquidity; the supplied product notes do not state current fees for THD, EWM or EPHE.
  • Multiple orders can increase commissions and foreign-exchange costs.
  • You must decide when to rebalance and how to handle dividends, corporate actions and tax lots.
  • Country funds can be more volatile and less liquid than a diversified regional vehicle.
  • Without a written target, the basket can drift into an unintended concentration.

A simple allocation example

Suppose your policy is 40% Thailand, 30% Malaysia and 30% Philippines. You would buy the three funds in those proportions, document the targets and rebalance when a holding moves beyond a preset band, such as five percentage points. The percentages are an illustration of the method, not a recommendation; choose weights based on your overall portfolio and risk capacity.

Implementation checklist before you buy

  1. Define the mandate. Write down whether the goal is broad ASEAN, dividend income, active management, wider Asia or a custom ex-Indonesia basket.
  2. Verify the latest holdings. Check the issuer’s current country and sector weights. Treat the ASEA figures above as the March 31, 2025 snapshot they are, not a permanent allocation.
  3. Check concentration. Look for Singapore and financials exposure in ASEA, and inspect how much non-ASEAN exposure GMF carries.
  4. Compare recurring costs. ASEA’s reported total expense ratio is 0.65%; UPD/UPU’s management fee is 0.45%. Obtain the current ongoing charges for active funds and country ETFs.
  5. Price the trade. Compare bid-ask spreads, average volume, market hours and order types on NYSE Arca or SGX. A lower fee can be outweighed by a wide spread on a small trade.
  6. Confirm currency mechanics. Decide whether you can fund SGD, USD or another dealing currency and understand that the trading currency is not the same as the currencies of the underlying companies.
  7. Check eligibility and taxes. Brokerage access, withholding taxes, reporting requirements and product restrictions vary by domicile. Obtain local advice where necessary.
  8. Set a review rule. Schedule a periodic holdings and allocation check rather than assuming a regional label guarantees the same exposure over time.

Risks a regional label does not remove

Emerging-market and political risk

ASEAN markets can experience regulatory changes, elections, capital controls, corporate-governance issues and abrupt policy shifts. A five-country fund spreads country-specific risk but does not eliminate regional or emerging-market risk.

Currency risk

Returns in your home currency depend on movements in the Singapore dollar, Thai baht, Malaysian ringgit, Philippine peso, Indonesian rupiah and other currencies represented by the holdings. Buying a USD trading line does not automatically hedge those exposures.

Liquidity and pricing risk

ETF prices can trade above or below net asset value during market stress or when local markets are closed. Use limit orders when appropriate and inspect the live spread rather than relying only on the fund’s expense ratio.

Index and distribution risk

Passive funds follow their stated methodology and rebalance; they do not protect you from a falling market. Dividend-focused funds can experience changing payouts, and UOBAM’s warning that distributions may include capital is especially important when assessing total return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which alternative is the best fit?

Choose ASEA if you want the simplest NYSE Arca trade for five ASEAN markets and can accept Singapore and financials concentration. Choose UPD or UPU if dividend screening is central, you can access SGX and you understand that the reported 7.0% gross trailing index yield is historical and distributions are not guaranteed. Consider JPMorgan ASEAN Equity when you want an active manager and are willing to evaluate share-class costs and dealing terms. Use GMF when your priority is broader emerging-Asia diversification rather than a pure ASEAN allocation. Assemble THD, EWM and EPHE when exact country weights or an Indonesia exclusion justify the extra trading and rebalancing work.
